A lattice $(d,k)$-polytope is the convex hull of a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose coordinates are integers ranging between $0$ and $k$. We consider the smallest possible distance $\varepsilon(d,k)$ between two disjoint lattice $(d,k)$-polytopes. We propose an algebraic model for this distance and derive from it an explicit formula for $\varepsilon(2,k)$. Our model also allows for the computation of previously intractable values of $\varepsilon(d,k)$. In particular, we compute $\varepsilon(3,k)$ when $4\leq{k}\leq8$, $\varepsilon(4,k)$ when $2\leq{k}\leq3$, and $\varepsilon(6,1)$.
We present an extension of the Delsarte linear programming method. For several dimensions it yields improved upper bounds for kissing numbers and for spherical codes. Musin's recent work on kissing numbers in dimensions three and four can be viewed in our framework.
We show that by cutting off the vertices and then the edges of neighborly cubical polytopes, one obtains simple 4-dimensional polytopes with n vertices such that all separators of the graph have size at least $Ω(n/\log^{3/2}n)$. This disproves a conjecture by Kalai from 1991/2004.
We show that there are simple 4-dimensional polytopes with n vertices such that all separators of the graph have size at least $Ω(n/\log n)$. This establishes a strong form of a claim by Thurston, for which the construction and proof had been lost. We construct the polytopes by cutting off the vertices and then the edges of a particular type of neighborly cubical polytopes. The graphs of simple polytopes thus obtained are 4-regular; they contain 3-regular "cube-connected cycle graphs" as minors of spanning subgraphs.
The problem of finding a triangulation of a convex three-dimensional polytope with few tetrahedra is proved to be NP-hard. We discuss other related complexity results.
We present a new algorithmic approach that can be used to determine whether a given quadruple $(f_0,f_1,f_2,f_3)$ is the f-vector of any convex 4-dimensional polytope. By implementing this approach, we classify the f-vectors of 4-polytopes in the range $f_0+f_3\le22$. In particular, we thus prove that there are f-vectors of cellular 3-spheres with the intersection property that are not f-vectors of any convex 4-polytopes, thus answering a question that may be traced back to the works of Steinitz (1906/1922). In the range $f_0+f_3\le22$, there are exactly three such f-vectors with $f_0\le f_3$,…
The aim of this paper is the determination of the largest $n$-dimensional polytope with $n+3$ vertices of unit diameter. This is a special case of a more general problem proposed by Graham.
Grünbaum, Barnette, and Reay in 1974 completed the characterization of the pairs $(f_i,f_j)$ of face numbers of $4$-dimensional polytopes. Here we obtain a complete characterization of the pairs of flag numbers $(f_0,f_{03})$ for $4$-polytopes. Furthermore, we describe the pairs of face numbers $(f_0,f_{d-1})$ for $d$-polytopes; this description is complete for even $d\ge6$ except for finitely many exceptional pairs that are "small" in a well-defined sense, while for odd $d$ we show that there are also "large" exceptional pairs. Our proofs rely on the insight that "small" pairs need to be defi…
The diameter of the graph of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $P \subseteq [0,k]^{n}$ is known to be at most $dk$ due to work by Kleinschmidt and Onn. However, it is an open question whether the monotone diameter, the shortest guaranteed length of a monotone path, of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $P = \{\mathbf{x}: A\mathbf{x} \leq \mathbf{b}\} \subseteq [0,k]^{n}$ is bounded by a polynomial in $d$ and $k$. This question is of particular interest in linear optimization, since paths traced by the Simplex method must be monotone. We introduce partial results in this direction including a …
An abstract polytope of rank n is said to be chiral if its automorphism group has precisely two orbits on the flags, such that adjacent flags belong to distinct orbits. The present paper describes a general method for deriving new finite chiral polytopes from old finite chiral polytopes of the same rank. In particular, the technique is used to construct many new examples in ranks 3, 4 and 5.
In the frame of a classification of general square systems of polynomial equations solvable by radicals, Esterov and Gusev succeeded in classifying all spanning lattice polytopes whose normalized volumes are at most $4$. In the present paper, we complete to classify all lattice polytopes whose normalized volumes are at most $4$ based on the known classification of their $δ$-polynomials.
The rank of a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$ is defined by $F-(d+1)$, where $F$ denotes the number of facets of $P$. In this paper, We focus on the toric rings of $(0,1)$-polytopes with small rank. We study their normality, the torsionfreeness of their divisor class groups and the classification of their isomorphism classes.
We show that the edge graph of a 6-dimensional polytope with 12 facets has diameter at most 6, thus verifying the d-step conjecture of Klee and Walkup in the case of d=6. This implies that for all pairs (d,n) with n-d \leq 6 the diameter of the edge graph of a d-polytope with n facets is bounded by 6, which proves the Hirsch conjecture for all n-d \leq 6. We show this result by showing this bound for a more general structure -- so-called matroid polytopes -- by reduction to a small number of satisfiability problems.
We construct small covers and quasitoric manifolds over $n$-dimensional simple polytopes which allow proper colorings of facets with $n$ colors. We calculate Stiefel-Whitney classes of these manifolds as obstructions to immersions and embeddings into Euclidean spaces. The largest dimension required for embedding is achieved in the case $n$ is a power of two.
The Voronoi conjecture on parallelohedra claims that for every convex polytope $P$ that tiles Euclidean $d$-dimensional space with translations there exists a $d$-dimensional lattice such that $P$ and the Voronoi polytope of this lattice are affinely equivalent. The Voronoi conjecture is still open for the general case but it is known that some combinatorial restriction for the face structure of $P$ ensure that the Voronoi conjecture holds for $P$. In this paper we prove that if $P$ is the Voronoi polytope of one of the dual root lattices $\mathsf{D}_d^*$, $\mathsf{E}_6^*$, $\mathsf{E}_7^*$ or…
We determine lattice polytopes of smallest volume with a given number of interior lattice points. We show that the Ehrhart polynomials of those with one interior lattice point have largest roots with norm of order n^2, where n is the dimension. This improves on the previously best known bound n and complements a recent result of Braun where it is shown that the norm of a root of an Ehrhart polynomial is at most of order n^2. For the class of 0-symmetric lattice polytopes we present a conjecture on the smallest volume for a given number of interior lattice points and prove the conjecture for cr…
The chromatic number for properly colouring the facets of a combinatorial simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ that is the orbit space of a quasitoric manifold satisfies the inequality $n\leq P^n\leq 2^n-1$. The inequality is sharp for $n=2$ but not for $n=3$ due to the Four Color theorem. In this note, we construct a simple 4-polytope admitting a characteristic map whose chromatic number equals $15$ and deduce that the predicted upper bound is attained for $n=4$. Analogues results are verified for the case of oriented small covers in dimensions $4$ and $5$.
We explore the connection between simple polytopes and self-dual binary codes via the theory of small covers. We first show that a small cover $M^n$ over a simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ produces a self-dual code in the sense of Kreck-Puppe if and only if $P^n$ is $n$-colorable and $n$ is odd. Then we show how to describe such a self-dual binary code in terms of the combinatorial information of $P^n$. Moreover, we can define a family of binary codes $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$, $0\leq k\leq n$, from an arbitrary simple $n$-polytope $P^n$. We will give some necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfr…
We propose a variant of the Chvatal-Gomory procedure that will produce a sufficient set of facet normals for the integer hulls of all polyhedra {xx : Ax <= b} as b varies. The number of steps needed is called the small Chvatal rank (SCR) of A. We characterize matrices for which SCR is zero via the notion of supernormality which generalizes unimodularity. SCR is studied in the context of the stable set problem in a graph, and we show that many of the well-known facet normals of the stable set polytope appear in at most two rounds of our procedure. Our results reveal a uniform hypercyclic struct…
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. For a reduced word $\bf i$ of the longest element in the Weyl group of $G$ and a dominant integral weight $λ$, one can construct the string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$, whose lattice points encode the character of the irreducible representation $V_λ$. The string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$ is singular in general and combinatorics of string polytopes heavily depends on the choice of $\mathbf i$. In this paper, we study combinatorics of string polytopes when $G = SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and present a sufficient condition on $\mathbf i$ such that …
A well known result by Lagarias and Ziegler states that there are finitely many equivalence classes of d-dimensional lattice polytopes having volume at most K, for fixed constants d and K. We describe an algorithm for the complete enumeration of such equivalence classes for arbitrary constants d and K. The algorithm, which gives another proof of the finiteness result, is implemented for small values of K, up to dimension six. The resulting database contains and extends several existing ones, and has been used to correct mistakes in other classifications. When specialized to three-dimensional s…
We introduce the M-representation of polytopes, which makes it possible to compute linear transformations, convex hulls, and Minkowski sums with linear complexity in the dimension of the polytopes. When the polytope is a convex hull of a zonotope and a polytope, the representation size can be smaller than any of the known representations (V-representation, H-representation, and Z-representation). We also provide a variant of the M-representation: The chain representation is more compact and we can directly use it to compute linear transformations and convex hulls -- for all other operations on…
Finding a good bound on the maximal edge diameter $Δ(d,n)$ of a polytope in terms of its dimension $d$ and the number of its facets $n$ is one of the basic open questions in polytope theory \cite{BG}. Although some bounds are known, the behaviour of the function $Δ(d,n)$ is largely unknown. The Hirsch conjecture, formulated in 1957 and reported in \cite{GD}, states that $Δ(d,n)$ is linear in $n$ and $d$: $Δ(d,n) \leq n-d$. The conjecture is known to hold in small dimensions, i.e., for $d \leq 3$ \cite{VK}, along with other specific pairs of $d$ and $n$ (Table \ref{before}). However, the asympt…
Let $Δ$ be an $n$-dimensional lattice polytope. The smallest non-negative integer $i$ such that $k Δ$ contains no interior lattice points for $1 \leq k \leq n - i$ we call the degree of $Δ$. We consider lattice polytopes of fixed degree $d$ and arbitrary dimension $n$. Our main result is a complete classification of $n$-dimensional lattice polytopes of degree $d=1$. This is a generalization of the classification of lattice polygons $(n=2)$ without interior lattice points due to Arkinstall, Khovanskii, Koelman and Schicho. Our classification shows that the secondary polytope of a lattice polyto…
We completely classify non-spanning $3$-polytopes, by which we mean lattice $3$-polytopes whose lattice points do not affinely span the lattice. We show that, except for six small polytopes (all having between five and eight lattice points), every non-spanning $3$-polytope $P$ has the following simple description: $P\cap \mathbb{Z}^3$ consists of either (1) two lattice segments lying in parallel and consecutive lattice planes or (2) a lattice segment together with three or four extra lattice points placed in a very specific manner. From this description we conclude that all the empty tetrahedr…
We study a correspondence between numerical sets and integer partitions that leads to a bijection between simultaneous core partitions and the integer points of a certain polytope. We use this correspondence to prove combinatorial results about core partitions. For small values of a, we give formulas for the number of (a,b)-core partitions corresponding to numerical semigroups. We also study the number of partitions with a given hook set.
We give an effective upper bound on the h^*-polynomial of a lattice polytope in terms of its degree and leading coefficient, confirming a conjecture of Batyrev. We deduce this bound as a consequence of a strong Cayley decomposition theorem which says, roughly speaking, that any lattice polytope with a large multiple that has no interior lattice points has a nontrivial decomposition as a Cayley sum of polytopes of smaller dimension. In an appendix, we interpret this result in terms of adjunction theory for toric varieties.
Let $d$ and $n$ be positive integers with $n \geq d + 1$ and $τ_{1}, ..., τ_{n}$ integers with $τ_{1} < ... < τ_{n}$. Let $C_{d}(τ_{1}, ..., τ_{n}) \subset \RR^{d}$ denote the cyclic polytope of dimension $d$ with $n$ vertices $(τ_{1},τ_{1}^{2},...,τ_{1}^{d}), ..., (τ_{n},τ_{n}^{2},...,τ_{n}^{d})$. We are interested in finding the smallest integer $γ_{d}$ such that if $τ_{i+1} - τ_{i} \geq γ_{d}$ for $1 \leq i < n$, then $C_{d}(τ_{1}, ..., τ_{n})$ is normal. One of the known results is $γ_{d} \leq d (d + 1)$. In the present paper a new inequality $γ_{d} \leq d^{2} - 1$ is proved. Moreover, it …
We develop a procedure for the complete computational enumeration of lattice $3$-polytopes of width larger than one, up to any given number of lattice points. We also implement an algorithm for doing this and enumerate those with at most eleven lattice points (there are 216,453 of them). In order to achieve this we prove that if $P$ is a lattice 3-polytope of width larger than one and with at least seven lattice points then it fits in one of three categories that we call boxed, spiked and merged. Boxed polytopes have at most 11 lattice points; in particular they are finitely many, and we enume…
Neighborly polytopes are those that maximize the number of faces in each dimension among all polytopes with the same number of vertices. Despite their extremal properties they form a surprisingly rich class of polytopes, which has been widely studied and is the subject of many open problems and conjectures. In this paper, we study the enumeration of neighborly polytopes beyond the cases that have been computed so far. To this end, we enumerate neighborly oriented matroids --- a combinatorial abstraction of neighborly polytopes --- of small rank and corank. In particular, if we denote by OM($r,…
We investigate small covers and quasitoric over the duals of neighborly simplicial polytopes with small number of vertices in dimensions $4$, $5$, $6$ and $7$. In the most of the considered cases we obtain the complete classification of small covers. The lifting conjecture in all cases is verified to be true. The problem of cohomological rigidity for small covers is also studied and we have found a whole new series of weakly cohomologically rigid simple polytopes. New examples of manifolds provide the first known examples of quasitoric manifolds in higher dimensions whose orbit polytopes have …
A small cover was introduced by Davis and Januszkiewicz as an $n$-dimensional closed manifold with a locally standard $Z_2)^n$-action such that its orbit space is a simple convex polytope. There exist a one-to-one correspondence between small covers and $(Z_2)^n$-colored polytopes. In this paper we study a construction of 3-dimensional small covers by using two operations called a connected sum and a surgery. These operations correspondent to combinatorial operations on $(Z_2)^3$-colored simple convex polytopes. We shall show that each 3-dimensional small cover can be constructed from $T^3$, $…
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off …
Extended formulations are an important tool to obtain small (even compact) formulations of polytopes by representing them as projections of higher dimensional ones. It is an important question whether a polytope admits a small extended formulation, i.e., one involving only a polynomial number of inequalities in its dimension. For the case of symmetric extended formulations (i.e., preserving the symmetries of the polytope) Yannakakis established a powerful technique to derive lower bounds and rule out small formulations. We rephrase the technique of Yannakakis in a group-theoretic framework. Th…
Let $ES_{d}(n)$ be the smallest integer such that any set of $ES_{d}(n)$ points in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ in general position contains $n$ points in convex position. In 1960, Erdős and Szekeres showed that $ES_{2}(n) \geq 2^{n-2} + 1$ holds, and famously conjectured that their construction is optimal. This was nearly settled by Suk in 2017, who showed that $ES_{2}(n) \leq 2^{n+o(n)}$. In this paper, we prove that $$ES_{d}(n) = 2^{o(n)}$$ holds for all $d \geq 3$. In particular, this establishes that, in higher dimensions, substantially fewer points are needed in order to ensure the presence of a con…
Let $P$ and $Q$ be finite partially ordered sets on $[d] = \{1, \ldots, d\}$, and $\mathcal{O}(P) \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ and $\mathcal{O}(Q) \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ their order polytopes. The twinned order polytope of $P$ and $Q$ is the convex polytope $Δ(P,-Q) \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ which is the convex hull of $\mathcal{O}(P) \cup (- \mathcal{O}(Q))$. It follows that the origin of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ belongs to the interior of $Δ(P,-Q)$ if and only if $P$ and $Q$ possess a common linear extension. It will be proved that, when the origin of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ belongs to the interior of $Δ(P,-Q)$,…
An extended formulation of a polytope P is a polytope Q which can be projected onto P. Extended formulations of small size (i.e., number of facets) are of interest, as they allow to model corresponding optimization problems as linear programs of small sizes. The main known lower bounds on the minimum sizes of extended formulations for fixed polytope P (Yannakakis 1991) are closely related to the concept of nondeterministic communication complexity. We study the relative power and limitations of the bounds on several examples.
The main objects of the present paper are (i) Hibi rings (toric rings arising from order polytopes of posets), (ii) stable set rings (toric rings arising from stable set polytopes of perfect graphs), and (iii) edge rings (toric rings arising from edge polytopes of graphs satisfying the odd cycle condition). The goal of the present paper is to analyze those three toric rings and to discuss their structures in the case where their class groups have small rank. We prove that the class groups of (i), (ii) and (iii) are torsionfree. More precisely, we give descriptions of their class groups. Moreov…
Balanced minimum evolution (BME) is a statistically consistent distance-based method to reconstruct a phylogenetic tree from an alignment of molecular data. In 2000, Pauplin showed that the BME method is equivalent to optimizing a linear functional over the BME polytope, the convex hull of the BME vectors obtained from Pauplin's formula applied to all binary trees. The BME method is related to the Neighbor Joining (NJ) algorithm, now known to be a greedy optimization of the BME principle. Further, the NJ and BME algorithms have been studied previously to understand when the NJ Algorithm return…
Linear constraints for a matrix polytope with no fractional vertex are investigated as intersecting research among permutation codes, rank modulations, and linear programming methods. By focusing the discussion to the block structure of matrices, new classes of such polytopes are obtained from known small polytopes. This concept, called "consolidation", is applied to find a new compact graph which is known as an approach for the graph isomorphism problem. Encoding and decoding algorithms for our new permutation codes are obtained from existing algorithms for small polytopes. The minimum distan…
We show that any smooth lattice polytope P with codegree greater or equal than (dim(P)+3)/2 (or equivalently, with degree smaller than dim(P)/2), defines a dual defective projective toric manifold. This implies that P is Q-normal (in the terminology of a recent paper by Di Rocco, Piene and the first author) and answers partially an adjunction-theoretic conjecture by Beltrametti and Sommese. Also, it follows that smooth lattice polytopes with this property are precisely strict Cayley polytopes, which completes the answer of a question of Batyrev and the second author in the nonsingular case.
