The chromatic number for properly colouring the facets of a combinatorial simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ that is the orbit space of a quasitoric manifold satisfies the inequality $n\leq P^n\leq 2^n-1$. The inequality is sharp for $n=2$ but not for $n=3$ due to the Four Color theorem. In this note, we construct a simple 4-polytope admitting a characteristic map whose chromatic number equals $15$ and deduce that the predicted upper bound is attained for $n=4$. Analogues results are verified for the case of oriented small covers in dimensions $4$ and $5$.
We investigate the question of whether any $d$-colorable simplicial $d$-polytope can be octahedralized, i.e., it can be subdivided to a $d$-dimensional geometric cross-polytopal complex. We give a positive answer in dimension $3$, with the additional property that the octahedralization introduces no new vertices on the boundary of the polytope.
The convex hulls of face-vertex incident vectors of 3-face-colorable convex polytopes are computed. It is found that every such convex hull is a $d$-polytope with $d+2$ or $d+3$ vertices. Utilizing Gale transform and Gale diagram, we calculate its combinatorial structure. Finally, a necessary and sufficient criterion for combinatorial equivalence of two such convex hulls is given.
We explore the connection between simple polytopes and self-dual binary codes via the theory of small covers. We first show that a small cover $M^n$ over a simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ produces a self-dual code in the sense of Kreck-Puppe if and only if $P^n$ is $n$-colorable and $n$ is odd. Then we show how to describe such a self-dual binary code in terms of the combinatorial information of $P^n$. Moreover, we can define a family of binary codes $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$, $0\leq k\leq n$, from an arbitrary simple $n$-polytope $P^n$. We will give some necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfr…
A {sign-circuit cover} $\mathcal{F}$ of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is a family of sign-circuits which covers all edges of $(G, σ)$. The shortest sign-circuit cover problem was initiated by Má$\check{\text{c}}$ajová, Raspaud, Rollová, and Škoviera (JGT 2016) and received many attentions in recent years. In this paper, we show that every flow-admissible 3-edge colorable cubic signed graph $(G, σ)$ has a sign-circuit cover with length at most $\frac{20}{9} |E(G)|$.
A remarkable and important property of face numbers of simplicial polytopes is the generalized lower bound inequality, which says that the $h$-numbers of any simplicial polytope are unimodal. Recently, for balanced simplicial $d$-polytopes, that is simplicial $d$-polytopes whose underlying graphs are $d$-colorable, Klee and Novik proposed a balanced analogue of this inequality, that is stronger than just unimodality. The aim of this article is to prove this conjecture of Klee and Novik. For this, we also show a Lefschetz property for rank-selected subcomplexes of balanced simplicial polytopes …
We construct small covers and quasitoric manifolds over $n$-dimensional simple polytopes which allow proper colorings of facets with $n$ colors. We calculate Stiefel-Whitney classes of these manifolds as obstructions to immersions and embeddings into Euclidean spaces. The largest dimension required for embedding is achieved in the case $n$ is a power of two.
In this note we construct two infinite snark families which have high oddness and low circumference compared to the number of vertices. Using this construction, we also give a counterexample to a suggested strengthening of Fulkerson's conjecture by showing that the Petersen graph is not the only cyclically 4-edge connected cubic graph which require at least five perfect matchings to cover its edges. Furthermore the counterexample presented has the interesting property that no 2-factor can be part of a cycle double cover.
Let P be a d-dimensional lattice polytope. We show that there exists a natural number c_d, only depending on d, such that the multiples cP have a unimodular cover for every natural number c >= c_d. Actually, a subexponential upper bound for c_d is provided, together with an analogous result for unimodular covers of rational cones.
We prove that if $M$ is a maximal $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of a multigraph $G$ and if $F = \{v \in V(G) : d_M(v) \leq k-μ(v)\}$, then $d_F(v) \leq d_M(v)$ for all $v \in F$. (When $G$ is a simple graph, the set $F$ is just the set of vertices having degree less than $k$ in $M$.) This implies Vizing's Theorem as well as a special case of Tuza's Conjecture on packing and covering of triangles. A more detailed version of our result also implies Vizing's Adjacency Lemma for simple graphs.
This article mainly aims to give combinatorial characterizations and topological descriptions of quasitoric manifolds with string property. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple polytope in dimension 2 and 3 to be realizable as the orbit polytope of a string quasitoric manifold. In particular, a complete description of string quasitoric manifolds over prisms is obtained. On the other hand, we characterize string quasitoric manifolds over $n$-dimensional simple polytopes with no more than $2n+2$ facets. Further results are available when the orbit polytope is the connecte…
Let $G(n,m)$ be the random graph on $n$ vertices with $m$ edges. Let $d=2m/n$ be its average degree. We prove that $G(n,m)$ fails to be $k$-colorable with high probability if $d>2k\ln k-\ln k-1+o_k(1)$. This matches a conjecture put forward on the basis of sophisticated but non-rigorous statistical physics ideas (Krzakala, Pagnani, Weigt 2004). The proof is based on applying the first moment method to the number of "covers", a physics-inspired concept. By comparison, a standard first moment over the number of $k$-colorings shows that $\gnm$ is not $k$-colorable with high probability if $d>2k\l…
A small cover was introduced by Davis and Januszkiewicz as an $n$-dimensional closed manifold with a locally standard $Z_2)^n$-action such that its orbit space is a simple convex polytope. There exist a one-to-one correspondence between small covers and $(Z_2)^n$-colored polytopes. In this paper we study a construction of 3-dimensional small covers by using two operations called a connected sum and a surgery. These operations correspondent to combinatorial operations on $(Z_2)^3$-colored simple convex polytopes. We shall show that each 3-dimensional small cover can be constructed from $T^3$, $…
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off …
We investigate small covers and quasitoric over the duals of neighborly simplicial polytopes with small number of vertices in dimensions $4$, $5$, $6$ and $7$. In the most of the considered cases we obtain the complete classification of small covers. The lifting conjecture in all cases is verified to be true. The problem of cohomological rigidity for small covers is also studied and we have found a whole new series of weakly cohomologically rigid simple polytopes. New examples of manifolds provide the first known examples of quasitoric manifolds in higher dimensions whose orbit polytopes have …
We show that: (1) unimodular simplices in a lattice 3-polytope cover a neighborhood of the boundary of the polytope if and only if the polytope is very ample, (2) the convex hull of lattice points in every ellipsoid in R^3 has a unimodular cover, and (3) for every d at least 5, there are ellipsoids in R^d, such that the convex hulls of the lattice points in these ellipsoids are not even normal. Part (3) answers a question of Bruns, Michalek, and the author.
It is shown that a small cover (resp. real moment-angle manifold) over a simple polytope is an infra-solvmanifold if and only if it is diffeomorphic to a real Bott manifold (resp. flat torus). Moreover, we obtain several equivalent conditions for a small cover being homeomorphic to a real Bott manifold. In addition, we study Riemannian metrics on small covers and real moment-angle manifolds with certain conditions on the Ricci or sectional curvature. We will see that these curvature conditions put very strong restrictions on the topology of the corresponding small covers and real moment-angle …
We prove a common strengthening of Bárány's colorful Carathéodory theorem and the KKMS theorem. In fact, our main result is a colorful polytopal KKMS theorem, which extends a colorful KKMS theorem due to Shih and Lee [Math. Ann. 296 (1993), no. 1, 35--61] as well as a polytopal KKMS theorem due to Komiya [Econ. Theory 4 (1994), no. 3, 463--466]. The (seemingly unrelated) colorful Carathéodory theorem is a special case as well. We apply our theorem to establish an upper bound on the piercing number of colorful d-interval hypergraphs, extending earlier results of Tardos [Combinatorica 15 (1995),…
A small cover is a closed smooth manifold of dimension $n$ having a locally standard $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-action whose orbit space is isomorphic to a simple polytope. A typical example of small covers is a real projective toric manifold (or, simply, a real toric manifold), that is, a real locus of projective toric manifold. In the paper, we classify small covers and real toric manifolds whose orbit space is isomorphic to the dual of the simplicial complex obtainable by a sequence of wedgings from a polygon, using a systematic combinatorial method finding toric spaces called puzzles.
In the chapter "Magic with a Matrix" in \emph{Hexaflexagons and Other Mathematical Diversions} (1988), Martin Gardner describes a delightful "party trick" to fill the squares of a $d$-by-$d$ chessboard with nonnegative integers such that the sum of the numbers covered by any placement of $d$ nonthreatening rooks is a given number $N$. We consider such chessboards from a geometric perspective which gives rise to a family of lattice polytopes. The polyhedral structure of these Gardner polytopes explains the underlying trick and enables us to count such chessboards for given $N$ in three differen…
We call a polytope P of dimension 3 admissible if it has the following two properties: (1) for each vertex of P the set of its first-neighbours is coplanar; (2) all planes determined by the first-neighbours are distinct. It is shown that the Levi graph of a point-plane configuration obtained by V-construction from an admissible polytope P is the Kronecker cover of its 1-skeleton. We investigate the combinatorial nature of the V-construction and use it on unit-distance graphs to construct novel isometric point-circle configurations. In particular, we present an infinite series whose all members…
The phylogenetic tree space, introduced by Billera, Holmes, and Vogtmann, is a cone over a simplicial complex. In this short article, we construct this complex from local gluings of classical polytopes, the associahedron and the permutohedron. Its homotopy is also reinterpreted and calculated based on polytope data.
This paper contains a classication of the regular minimal abstract polytopes that act as covers for the convex polyhedral prisms and antiprisms. It includes a detailed discussion of their topological structure, and completes the enumeration of such covers for convex uniform polyhedra. Additionally, this paper addresses related structural questions in the theory of string C-groups.
In this paper we study the (equivariant) topological types of a class of 3-dimensional closed manifolds (i.e., 3-dimensional small covers), each of which admits a locally standard $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^3$-action such that its orbit space is a simple convex 3-polytope. We introduce six equivariant operations on 3-dimensional small covers. These six operations are interesting because of their combinatorial natures. Then we show that each 3-dimensional small cover can be obtained from $\mathbb{R}P^3$ and $S^1\times\mathbb{R}P^2$ with certain $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^3$-actions under these six operations. As an …
In this paper, based upon the basic theory for glued manifolds in M.W. Hirsch (1976) \cite[Chapter 8, §2 Gluing Manifolds Together]{h}, we give a method of constructing homeomorphisms between two small covers over simple convex polytopes. As a result we classify, up to homeomorphism, all small covers over a 3-dimensional prism $P^3(m)$ with $m\geq 3$. We introduce two invariants from colored prisms and other two invariants from ordinary cohomology rings with ${\Bbb Z}_2$-coefficients of small covers. These invariants can form a complete invariant system of homeomorphism types of all small cove…
We study Brill-Noether existence on a finite graph using methods from polyhedral geometry and lattices. We start by formulating analogues of the Brill-Noether conjectures (both the existence and non-existence parts) for $\mathbb{R}$-divisors, i.e. divisors with real coefficients, on a graph. We then reformulate the Brill-Noether existence conjecture for $\mathbb{R}$-divisors on a graph in geometric terms, that we refer to as the covering radius conjecture and we show a weak version, in support of it. Using this, we show an approximate version of the Brill-Noether existence conjecture for divis…

We examine the task of locating a target region among those induced by intersections of $n$ halfspaces in $\mathbb{R}^d$. This generic task connects to fundamental machine learning problems, such as training a perceptron and learning a $ϕ$-separable dichotomy. We investigate the average teaching complexity of the task, i.e., the minimal number of samples (halfspace queries) required by a teacher to help a version-space learner in locating a randomly selected target. As our main result, we show that the average-case teaching complexity is $Θ(d)$, which is in sharp contrast to the worst-case tea…
