In the theory of flat chains with coefficients in a normed abelian group, we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition on a group element $g$ in order for the following fundamental regularity principle to hold: if a mass-minimizing chain is, in a ball disjoint from the boundary, sufficiently weakly close to a multiplicity $g$ disk, then, in a smaller ball, it is a $C^{1,α}$ perturbation with multiplicity $g$ of that disk.
This is the last of a series of three papers in which we give a new, shorter proof of a slightly improved version of Almgren's partial regularity of area minimizing currents in Riemannian manifolds. Here we perform a blow-up analysis deducing the regularity of area minimizing currents from that of Dir-minimizing multiple valued functions.
We give partial boundary regularity for co-dimension one absolutely area-minimizing currents at points where the boundary consists of a sum of $C^{1,α}$ submanifolds, possibly with multiplicity, meeting tangentially, given that the current has a tangent cone supported in a hyperplane with constant orientation vector; this partial regularity is such that we can conclude the tangent cone is unique. The proof follows closely the boundary regularity result given by Hardt and Simon in [9].

In a series of papers, including the present one, we give a new, shorter proof of Almgren's partial regularity theorem for area minimizing currents in a Riemannian manifold, with a slight improvement on the regularity assumption for the latter. This note establishes a new a priori estimate on the excess measure of an area minimizing current, together with several statements concerning approximations with Lipschitz multiple valued graphs. Our new a priori estimate is an higher integrability type result, which has a counterpart in the theory of Dir-minimizing multiple valued functions and plays …
We adapt to an infinite dimensional ambient space E.R. Reifenberg's epiperimetric inequality and a quantitative version of D. Preiss' second moments computations to establish that the set of regular points of an almost mass minimizing rectifiable $G$ chain in $\ell_2$ is dense in its support, whenever the group $G$ of coefficients is so that $\{\|g\| : g \in G \}$ is discrete and closed.
This lecture notes are an expanded version of the course given at the ERC-School on Geometric Measure Theory and Real Analysis, held in Pisa, September 30th - October 30th 2013. The lectures aim to explain the main steps of a new proof of the partial regularity of area minimizing integer rectifiable currents in higher codimension, due originally to F. Almgren, which is contained in a series of papers in collaboration with C. De Lellis (University of Zurich).
This is the second paper of a series of three on the regularity of higher codimension area minimizing integral currents. Here we perform the second main step in the analysis of the singularities, namely the construction of a center manifold, i.e. an approximate average of the sheets of an almost flat area minimizing current. Such center manifold is complemented with a Lipschitz multi-valued map on its normal bundle, which approximates the current with a highe degree of accuracy. In the third and final paper these objects are used to conclude a new proof of Almgren's celebrated dimension bound …
We show $C^{1,α}$-regularity for energy minimizing maps from a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold into a Finsler space $(\R^n, F)$ with a Finsler structure $F(u,X)$.
We show that an asymptotically flat Riemannian three-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature is isometric to flat $\mathbb{R}^3$ if it admits an unbounded area-minimizing surface. This answers a question of R. Schoen.
In this article, we show that, for any compact 3-manifold, there is a $C^{1}$ volume-minimizing one-dimensional foliation. More generally, we show the existence of mass-minimizing rectifiable sections of sphere bundles without isolated "pole points" in the base manifold. This same analysis is used to show that the examples, due to Sharon Pedersen, of potentially volume-minimizing rectifiable sections (rectifiable foliations) of the unit tangent bundle to $S^{2n+1}$ are not, in fact, volume minimizing.
We give new examples of entire area-minimizing t-graphs in the subriemannian Heisenberg group H^1. Most of the examples are locally lipschitz in Euclidean sense. Some regular examples have prescribed singular set consisting of either a horizontal line or a finite number of horizontal halflines extending from a given point. Amongst them, a large family of area-minimizing cones is obtained.
Suppose that $N$ is a smooth manifold with a smooth Riemannian metric $g_0$, and that $Γ$ is a smooth submanifold of $N$. This paper proves that for a generic (in the sense of Baire category) smooth metric $g$ conformal to $g_0$, if $F$ is any simple $g$-minimal immersion of a closed manifold into N, then $F$ is transverse to $Γ$ and $F$ is self-transverse. The theorem remains true with "transverse" and "self-transverse" replaced by "strongly transverse" and "strongly self-transverse". The theorem also holds for hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature or, more generally, of prescribed mean cu…
In this article we extend to generic $p$-energy minimizing maps between Riemannian manifolds a regularity result which is known to hold in the case $p=2$. We first show that the set of singular points of such a map can be quantitatively stratified: we classify singular points based on the number of almost-symmetries of the map around them, as done by Cheeger and Naber in 2013. Then, adapting the work of Naber and Valtorta, we apply a Reifenberg-type Theorem to each quantitative stratum; through this, we achieve an upper bound on the Minkowski content of the singular set, and we prove it is $k$…
In this paper we prove quantitative regularity results for stationary and minimizing extrinsic biharmonic maps. As an application, we determine sharp, dimension independent $L^p$ bounds for $\nabla^k f$ that do not require a small energy hypothesis. In particular, every minimizing biharmonic map is in $W^{4,p}$ for all $1\le p<5/4$. Further, for minimizing biharmonic maps from $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^5$, we determine a uniform bound on the number of singular points in a compact set. Finally, using dimension reduction arguments, we extend these results to minimizing and stationary biharmonic maps …
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of a $2$-dimensional integral current which is almost minimizing in a suitable sense at a singular point. Our analysis is the second half of an argument which shows the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
Energy minimizing harmonic maps between manifolds are known to be smooth outside a rectifiable set of codimension $3$, called the singular set. The possibility that this set is not a manifold, but has arbitrarily many small gaps in it, is not excluded in general. Here we prove that some part of the singular set - characterized by topological and analytic properties of tangent maps - is a topological manifold. In the special case of maps into the sphere ${\mathbb S}^2$, we conclude that the whole top-dimensional part of the singular set is a manifold - this generalizes a similar result in two-d…
In this paper we prove the strong Sard conjecture for sub-Riemannian structures on 3-dimensional analytic manifolds. More precisely, given a totally nonholonomic analytic distribution of rank 2 on a 3-dimensional analytic manifold, we investigate the size of the set of points that can be reached by singular horizontal paths starting from a given point and prove that it has Hausdorff dimension at most 1. In fact, provided that the lengths of the singular curves under consideration are bounded with respect to a given complete Riemannian metric, we demonstrate that such a set is a semianalytic cu…
We prove a new logarithmic epiperimetric inequality for multiplicity-one stationary cones with isolated singularity by flowing in the radial direction any given trace along appropriately chosen directions. In contrast to previous epiperimetric inequalities for minimal surfaces (e.g. those of Reifenberg, Taylor and White), we need no a priori assumptions on the structure of the cone (e.g. integrability). Moreover, if the cone is integrable (not only through rotations), we recover the classical epiperimetric inequality. As a consequence we deduce a new $\varepsilon$-regularity result for almost …
Let B be a fiber bundle with compact fiber F over a compact Riemannian n-manifold M. There is a natural Riemannian metric on the total space B consistent with the metric on M. With respect to that metric, the volume of a rectifiable section s:M--> B is the mass of the image s(M) as a rectifiable n-current in B. Theorem: For any homology class of sections of B, there is a mass-minimizing Cartesian current T representing that homology class which is the graph of a C^1 section on an open dense subset of M.
We construct a branched center manifold in a neighborhood of a singular point of a $2$-dimensional integral current which is almost minimizing in a suitable sense. Our construction is the first half of an argument which shows the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
We construct Lipschitz $Q$-valued functions which approximate carefully integral currents when their cylindrical excess is small and they are almost minimizing in a suitable sense. This result is used in two subsequent works to prove the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional integral currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
By Federer and Fleming there exist at least one mass-minimizing normal current in every real-valued homology class of a Riemannian manifold. However the regularity of the mass-minimizing currents and their distributions may generally be quite complicated. In this paper we shall study how to construct nice metrics so that (as functionals over smooth forms) almost all homologically mass-minimizing currents are just linear combinations over smooth submanifolds.
We show that if an asymptotically flat manifold with horizon boundary admits a global static potential, then the static potential must be zero on the boundary. We also show that if an asymptotically flat manifold with horizon boundary admits an unbounded static potential in the exterior region, then the manifold must contain a complete non-compact area minimizing hypersurface. Some results related to the Riemannian positive mass theorem and Bartnik's quasi-local mass are obtained.
This a survey on a series of recent papers in collaboration with Emanuele Spadaro on the regularity of area-minimizing currents in codimension higher than $1$.
Hardt-Simon proved that every area-minimizing hypercone $\mathbf{C}$ having only an isolated singularity fits into a foliation of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ by smooth, area-minimizing hypersurfaces asymptotic to $\mathbf{C}$. In this paper we prove that if a stationary $n$-varifold $M$ in the unit ball $B_1 \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ lies sufficiently close to a minimizing quadratic cone (for example, the Simons' cone $\mathbf{C}^{3,3}$), then $\mathrm{spt} M \cap B_{1/2}$ is a $C^{1,α}$ perturbation of either the cone itself, or some leaf of its associated foliation. In particular, we show that singul…
We study the existence and regularity of energy-minimizing harmonic almost complex structures. We have proved results similar to the theory of harmonic maps, notably the classical results of Schoen-Uhlenbeck and recent advance by Cheeger-Naber.
On compact 2-manifolds with non-empty convex boundary, we prove a regularity result for integral 1-varifolds $V$ that are stationary with free boundary and $\mathbb{Z}_2$-almost minimizing in small annuli. That regularity says that $V$ is a free boundary finite geodesic network. Next, using that regularity, we compute the first $p$-widths of the unit closed ball $B^2,$ for $p=1, . . . , 4.$
Using methods of A. Grigor'yan and L. Saloff-Coste we prove that on a manifold with a conical end the heat kernel has a Gaussian bound. This result is applied to asymptotically conical Kähler manifolds. It is a result of the author and R. Goto that a crepant resolution of a Ricci-flat Kähler cone admits a Ricci-flat Kähler metric asymptotic to the cone metric in every Kähler class. We prove the sharp rate of convergence of the metric to the cone metric. For compact Kähler classes this is the same as for the Ricci-flat ALE metrics of P. Kronheimer and D. Joyce.

We consider the problem of minimizing the bending or elastic energy among Jordan curves confined in a given open set $Ω$. We prove existence, regularity and some structural properties of minimizers. In particular, when $Ω$ is convex we show that a minimizer is necessarily a convex curve. We also provide an example of a minimizer with self-intersections.
In this article, we study the regularity of minimizing and stationary $p$-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. The aim is obtaining Minkowski-type volume estimates on the singular set $S(f)=\{x \ \ s.t. \ \ f \text{ is not continuous at } x\}$, as opposed to the weaker and non quantitative Hausdorff dimension bounds currently available in literature for generic $p$. The main technique used in this paper is the quantitative stratification, which is based on the study of the approximate symmetries of the tangent maps of $f$. In this article, we generalize the study carried out in \cite{Ch…
We consider $2$-dimensional integer rectifiable currents which are almost area minimizing and show that their tangent cones are everywhere unique. Our argument unifies a few uniqueness theorems of the same flavor, which are all obtained by a suitable modification of White's original theorem for area minimizing currents in the euclidean space. This note is also the first step in a regularity program for semicalibrated $2$-dimensional currents and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
