We use conformal geometry methods and the construction of Friedrich's cylinder at spatial infinity to study the propagation of spin-$0$ fields (solutions to the wave equation) on $n$-dimensional Minkowski spacetimes in a neighbourhood of spatial and null infinity. We obtain formal solutions written in terms of series expansions close to spatial and null infinity and use them to compute non-trivial asymptotic spin-$0$ charges. It is shown that if one considers the most general initial data within the class considered in this paper, the expansion is poly-homogeneous and hence of restricted regularity at null infinity. Furthermore, we derive the conditions on the initial data needed to obtain regular solutions and well-defined limits for the asymptotic charges at the critical sets where null infinity and spatial infinity meet. In even dimensions, we find that there are infinitely many well-defined asymptotic charges at the critical sets, while for odd higher dimensions there exists no non-trivial asymptotic charges that remain regular at the critical sets.
A symmetric and conserved energy-momentum tensor for a scalar field in a moving medium is derived using the Gordon metric. When applied to an electromagnetic field, the method gives a similar result. This approach thus points a way out of the old Abraham-Minkowski controversy about the correct energy-momentum tensors for the electromagnetic field in a material medium. The new tensor describes the properties of the field while the Abraham tensor contains information about the field coupled to the medium.
In this article, we consider the limit of quasi-local conserved quantities [31,9] at the infinity of an asymptotically hyperbolic initial data set in general relativity. These give notions of total energy-momentum, angular momentum, and center of mass. Our assumption on the asymptotics is less stringent than any previous ones to validate a Bondi-type mass loss formula. The Lorentz group acts on the asymptotic infinity through the exchange of foliations by coordinate spheres. For foliations aligning with the total energy-momentum vector, we prove that the limits of quasi-local center of mass an…
We give a new proof of the global stability of Minkowski space originally established in the vacuum case by Christodoulou and Klainerman. The new approach shows that the Einstein-vacuum and the Einstein-scalar field equations with general asymptotically flat initial data satisfying a global smallness condition produce global (causally geodesically complete) solutions asymptotically convergent to the Minkowski space-time. The proof utilizes the classical harmonic (also known as de Donder or wave coordinate) gauge.
We explore some new off-shell and on-shell conserved quantities for a scalar field in Minkowski space, using integrability condition. The off-shell conserved tensors are related to the kinematics of the field, while a linear combination of the off-shell and the on-shell conserved tensors ends up with the energy-momentum tensor for the scalar field. In the curved background, using Ricci and Bianchi identities, Brans-Dicke type field equations emerge, without requiring the principle of equivalence. Further, starting from the curvature scalar and using these identities, the field equations for mo…
There is a well-known short list of asymptotic conserved quantities for a physical system at spatial infinity. We search for new ones. This is carried outwithin the asymptotic framework of Ashtekar and Romano, in which spatial infinity is represented as a smooth boundary of space-time. We first introduce, for physical fields on space-time,a characterization of their asymptotic behavior as certain fields on this boundary. Conserved quantities at spatial infinity, in turn, are constructed from these fields. We find,in Minkowski space-time, that each of a Klein-Gordon field, a Maxwell field, and a…
In order to illustrate a recently derived covariant formalism for computing asymptotic symmetries and asymptotically conserved superpotentials in gauge theories, the case of gravity with minimally coupled scalar fields is considered and the matter contribution to the asymptotically conserved superpotentials is computed.
Conformal rescaling of conformal Yano--Killing tensors and relations between Yano and CYK tensors are discussed. Pullback of these objects to a submanifold is used to construct all solutions of a CYK equation in anti-de Sitter and de Sitter spacetimes. Properties of asymptotic conformal Yano--Killing tensors are examined for asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Explicit asymptotic forms of them are derived. The results are used to construct asymptotic charges in asymptotic AdS spacetime. Well known examples like Schwarzschild-AdS, Kerr-AdS and NUT-AdS are examined carefully in the constructio…
In the first half of this article, we survey the new quasi-local and total angular momentum and center of mass defined in [9] and summarize the important properties of these definitions. To compute these conserved quantities involves solving a nonlinear PDE system (the optimal isometric embedding equation), which is rather difficult in general. We found a large family of initial data sets on which such a calculation can be carried out effectively. These are initial data sets of harmonic asymptotics, first proposed by Corvino and Schoen to solve the full vacuum constraint equation. In the secon…
Recent work has shown that the addition of an appropriate covariant boundary term to the gravitational action yields a well-defined variational principle for asymptotically flat spacetimes and thus leads to a natural definition of conserved quantities at spatial infinity. Here we connect such results to other formalisms by showing explicitly i) that for spacetime dimension $d \ge 4$ the canonical form of the above-mentioned covariant action is precisely the ADM action, with the familiar ADM boundary terms and ii) that for $d=4$ the conserved quantities defined by counter-term methods agree pre…

We prove a sharp inequality for toroidal hypersurfaces in three and four dimensional Horowitz-Myers geon. This extend previous results on Minkowski inequality in the static spacetime to toroidal surfaces in asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with flat toroidal conformal infinity.
Based on the recent paper hep-th/0503045, we derive a formula of calculating conserved charges in even dimensional asymptotically {\it locally} anti-de Sitter space-times by using the definition of Wald and Zoupas. This formula generalizes the one proposed by Ashtekar {\it et al}. Using the new formula we compute the masses of Taub-Bolt-AdS space-times by treating Taub-Nut-AdS space-times as the reference solution. Our result agrees with those resulting from "background subtraction" method or "boundary counterterm" method. We also calculate the conserved charges of Kerr-Taub-Nut-AdS solutions …
The calculation of conserved charges of black holes is a rich problem, for which many methods are known. Until recently, there was some controversy on the proper definition of conserved charges in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces in arbitrary dimensions. This paper provides a systematic and explicit Hamiltonian derivation of the energy and the angular momenta of both asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes in any dimension D bigger or equal to 4. This requires as a first step a precise determination of the asymptotic conditions of the metric and of its conjugate momentu…
Mass and other conserved Noether charges are discussed for solutions of gravity theories with locally Anti-de Sitter asymptotics in 2n dimensions. The action is supplemented with a boundary term whose purpose is to guarantee that it reaches an extremum on the classical solutions, provided the spacetime is locally AdS at the boundary. It is also shown that if spacetime is locally AdS at spatial infinity, the conserved charges are finite and properly normalized without requiring subtraction of a reference background. In this approach, Noether charges associated to Lorentz and diffeomorphism inva…
A new formula for the conserved charges in 3+1 gravity for spacetimes with local AdS asymptotic geometry is proposed. It is shown that requiring the action to have an extremum for this class of asymptotia sets the boundary term that must be added to the Lagrangian as the Euler density with a fixed weight factor. The resulting action gives rise to the mass and angular momentum as Noether charges associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors without requiring specification of a reference background in order to have a convergent expression. A consequence of this definition is that any negative con…
We give a new construction of conserved charges in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein's gravity. The new formula is explicitly gauge-invariant and makes direct use of the linearized curvature tensor instead of the metric perturbation. As an example, we compute the mass and angular momentum of the Kerr-AdS black holes.
In general relativity, the notion of mass and other conserved quantities at spatial infinity can be defined in a natural way via the Hamiltonian framework: Each conserved quantity is associated with an asymptotic symmetry and the value of the conserved quantity is defined to be the value of the Hamiltonian which generates the canonical transformation on phase space corresponding to this symmetry. However, such an approach cannot be employed to define `conserved quantities' in a situation where symplectic current can be radiated away (such as occurs at null infinity in general relativity) becau…
In this paper we consider the Einstein-Maxwell theory and define a combined transformation composed of diffeomorphism and $U(1)$ gauge transformation. For generality, we assume that the generator $χ$ of such transformation is field-dependent. We define the extended off-shell ADT current and then off-shell ADT charge such that they are conserved off-shell for the asymptotically field-dependent symmetry generator $χ$. Then, we define the conserved charge corresponding to the asymptotically field-dependent symmetry generator $χ$. We apply the presented method to find the conserved charges of the …
In this paper we consider the conservation laws for classical particles in $AdS_4$. At first we parameterize a geodesic line and construct conserved quantities with analog of five dimensional Minkowski space-time $M^{(2,3)}$. Consequently we change $AdS_4$ space to AdS-Beltrami space-time and write conserved quantities in the Beltrami coordinates. Finally we take a limit for small velocity $\dot{x}\ll c$ and we get the conserved quantities in Lorentz-Fock space-time. And finally we give out the energy of the nonrelativistic noncosmological particle under the cosmological limit.
Almost a century ago, Einstein used a weak field approximation around Minkowski space-time to calculate the energy carried away by gravitational waves emitted by a time changing mass-quadrupole. However, by now there is strong observational evidence for a positive cosmological constant, $Λ$. To incorporate this fact, Einstein's celebrated derivation is generalized by replacing Minkowski space-time with de Sitter space-time. The investigation is motivated by the fact that, because of the significant differences between the asymptotic structures of Minkowski and de Sitter space-times, many of th…
Asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times are considered in a general dimension $d\ge 4$. As one might expect, the boundary conditions at infinity ensure that the asymptotic symmetry group is the anti-de Sitter group (although there is an interesting subtlety if d=4). Asymptotic field equations imply that, associated with each generator $ξ$ of this group, there is a quantity $Q_ξ$ which satisfies the expected `balance equation' if there is flux of physical matter fields across the boundary $\I$ at infinity and is absolutely conserved in absence of this flux. Irrespective of the dimension d, al…
A Regge--Wheeler analysis is performed for a novel black hole mimicker `the regular black hole with asymptotically Minkowski core', followed by an approximation of the permitted quasi-normal modes for propagating waveforms. A first-order WKB approximation is computed for spin zero and spin one perturbations of the candidate spacetime. Subsequently, numerical results analysing the respective fundamental modes are compiled for various values of the $a$ parameter (which quantifies the distortion from Schwarzschild spacetime), and for various multipole numbers $\ell$. Both electromagnetic spin one…
Cosmic strings with degrees of freedom beyond the standard Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen or Nambu-Goto strings are ubiquitous in field theory as well as in models with extra dimensions, such as string theoretic brane inflation scenarios. Here we carry out an analytic study of a simplified version of one such cosmic string model. Specifically, we extend the velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS) string evolution model to the case where there is a conserved microscopic charge on the string worldsheet. We find that whether the standard scale-invariant evolution of the network is preserved or destroyed due…
The classical Bondi-Penrose approach to the gravitational radiation theory in asymptotically flat spacetimes is recalled and recent advances in the proofs of the existence of such spacetimes are briefly reviewed. We then mention the unique role of the boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes, representing uniformly accelerated objects, as the only explicit radiative solutions known which are asymptotically flat; they are used as test beds in numerical relativity and approximation methods. The main part of the review is devoted to the examples of radiative fields in the vacuum spacetimes with positi…
The article aims to analyze a construction of charges (conserved quantities) for the gravity field in the (3+1) decomposition. The construction is based on (3+1) splitting of conformal Yano--Killing (CYK) two-form. The splitting leads to charges, defined on Cauchy surface, which are combined from components of Weyl tensor and conformal Killing vector. The relations between the conserved quantities and its classical ADM counterparts are revisited. Asymptotic behavior of the conserved quantities is described. The charges are analyzed for a particular choice of initial data, among others, Bowen -…
A new prescription to calculate the total energies and angular momenta of asymptotically $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetimes is proposed. The method is based on an extension of the field theoretical approach to General Relativity to the case where there is an effective cosmological constant. A $(d-1)$-form $Ω$ is exhibited which, when integrated on asymptotic $(d-1)$-dimensional boundary surfaces, yields the values of those conserved quantities. The calculations are gauge independent once asymptotic conditions are not violated . Total energies and angular momenta of some known soluti…
We derive hamiltionian generators of asymptotic symmetries for general relativity with asymptotic AdS boundary conditions using the ``covariant phase space'' method of Wald et al. We then compare our results with other definitions that have been proposed in the literature. We find that our definition agrees with that proposed by Ashtekar et al, with the spinor definition, and with the background dependent definition of Henneaux and Teitelboim. Our definition disagrees with the one obtained from the ``counterterm subtraction method,'' but the difference is found to consist only of a ``constant …
We review issues related to conservation laws for gravity with a negative cosmological constant subject to asymptotically (locally) anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. Beginning with the empty AdS spacetime, we introduce asymptotically (locally) AdS (AlAdS) boundary conditions, important properties of the boundary metric, the notion of conformal frames, and the Fefferman-Graham expansion. These tools are used to construct variational principles for AlAdS gravity, to more properly define the notion of asymptotic symmetry, and to construct the associated boundary stress tensor. The resulting con…
Conserved quantities are obtained and analyzed in the new models with global scale invariance recently proposed. Such models allow for non tivial scalar field potentials and masses for particles, so that the scale symmetry must be broken somehow. We get to this conclusion by showing that the infrared behavior of the conserved currents is singular so that there are no conserved charges associated with the global scale symmetry. The scale symmetry plays nevertheless a crucial role in determining the structure of the theory and it implies that in some high field regions the potentials become flat…
The quasi-local formulation of conserved charges through the off-shell approach is extended to cover the asymptotic symmetry generators. By introducing identically conserved currents which are appropriate for asymptotic Killing vectors, we show that the asymptotic symmetry generators can be understood as quasi-local charges. We also show that this construction is completely consistent with the on-shell method.
In this work, conserved charges and fluxes at the future null infinity are determined in the asymptotically flat spacetime for Chern-Simons modified gravity. The flux-balance laws are used to constrain the memory effects. For tensor memories, the Penrose's conformal completion method is used to analyze the asymptotic structures and asymptotic symmetries, and then, conserved charges for the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra are constructed with the Wald-Zoupas formalism. These charges take very similar forms to those in Brans-Dicke theory. For the scalar memory, Chern-Simons modified gravity is rewri…
We present a covariant phase space construction of hamiltonian generators of asymptotic symmetries with `Dirichlet' boundary conditions in de Sitter spacetime, extending a previous study of Jäger. We show that the de Sitter charges so defined are identical to those of Ashtekar, Bonga, and Kesavan (ABK). We then present a comparison of ABK charges with other notions of de Sitter charges. We compare ABK charges with counterterm charges, showing that they differ only by a constant offset, which is determined in terms of the boundary metric alone. We also compare ABK charges with charges defined b…
We discuss the Minkowski stability problem in modified gravity by using dynamical system approach. The method to investigate dynamical stability of Minkowski space was proposed. This method was applied for some modified gravity theories, such as $f(R)$ gravity, $f(R)+αR\Box R$ gravity and scalar-tensor gravity models with non-minimal kinetic coupling. It was shown that in the case of $f(R)$ gravity Minkowski solution asymptotically stable in ghost-free ($f'>0$) and tachyon-free ($f">0$) theories in expanding Universe with respect to isotropic and basic anisotropic perturbations. In the case of…
The nonlinear instability of anti-de Sitter spacetime has recently been established with the striking result that generic initial data collapses to form black holes. This outcome suggests that confined matter generically collapses, and that collapse can only be halted -- at most -- by nonlinear bound states. Here we provide evidence that such mechanism can operate even in asymptotically flat spacetimes, by studying the evolution of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system for a self-interacting scalar field. We show that (i) configurations which do not collapse promptly can do so after successive refl…
Under suitable assumptions on the boundary conditions, it is shown that there is a bijective correspondence between equivalence classes of asymptotic reducibility parameters and asymptotically conserved n-2 forms in the context of Lagrangian gauge theories. The asymptotic reducibility parameters can be interpreted as asymptotic Killing vector fields of the background, with asymptotic behaviour determined by a new dynamical condition. A universal formula for asymptotically conserved n-2 forms in terms of the reducibility parameters is derived. Sufficient conditions for finiteness of the charges…
We construct a quasi-local formalism for conserved charges in a theory of gravity in the presence of matter fields which may have slow falloff behaviors at the asymptotic infinity. This construction depends only on equations of motion and so it is irrespective of ambiguities in the total derivatives of the Lagrangian. By using identically conserved currents, we show that this formalism leads to the same expressions of conserved charges as those in the covariant phase space approach. At the boundary of the asymptotic AdS space, we also introduce an identically conserved boundary current which h…
We construct the conserved charges (mass and angular momentum) of the Chern-Simons modified General Relativity in asymptotically flat and Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. Our definition is based on background Killing symmetries and reduces to the known expressions in the proper limits.
The asymptotic symmetries in Brans-Dicke theory are analyzed using Penrose's conformal completion method, which is independent of the coordinate system used. These symmetries indeed include supertranslations and Lorentz transformations for an asymptotically flat spacetime. With the Wald-Zoupas formalism, "conserved charges" and fluxes of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra are computed. The scalar degree of freedom contributes only to the Lorentz boost charge, although it plays a role in various fluxes. The flux-balance laws are further used to constrain displacement memory, spin memory and center…
We construct an asymptotic conserved charge for a current that has been defined using Killing-Yano tensors. We then calculate the corresponding conserved charges of of the Kerr and AdS-Kerr black holes, and their higher-dimensional generalizations, Myers-Perry and Gibbons-Lü-Page-Pope black holes. The new charges all turn out to be proportional to the angular momenta of their parent black holes.
We prove definitive results on the global stability of the flat space among solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system. Our main theorems in this monograph include: (1) A proof of global regularity (in wave coordinates) of solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon coupled system, in the case of small, smooth, and localized perturbations of the stationary Minkowski solution; (2) Precise asymptotics of the metric components and the Klein-Gordon field as the time goes to infinity, including the construction of modified (nonlinear) scattering profiles and quantitative bounds for convergence; (3) C…
A definition of asymptotic flatness at spatial infinity in $d$ dimensions ($d\geq 4$) is given using the conformal completion approach. Then we discuss asymptotic symmetry and conserved quantities. As in four dimensions, in $d$ dimensions we should impose a condition at spatial infinity that the "magnetic" part of the $d$-dimensional Weyl tensor vanishes at faster rate than the "electric" part does, in order to realize the Poincare symmetry as asymptotic symmetry and construct the conserved angular momentum. However, we found that an additional condition should be imposed in $d>4$ dimensions.
In this second paper we define a Post-Minkowskian (PM) weak field approximation leading to a linearization of the Hamilton equations of ADM tetrad gravity in the York canonical basis in a family of non-harmonic 3-orthogonal Schwinger time gauges. The York time ${}^3K$ (the relativistic inertial gauge variable, not existing in Newtonian gravity, parametrizing the family and connected to the freedom in clock synchronization, i.e. to the definition of the instantaneous 3-spaces) is put equal to an arbitrary numerical function. A ultraviolet cutoff on the matter allows a consistent linearization, …
We define an asymptotic symmetry algebra for three-dimensional Goedel spacetimes supported by a gauge field which turns out to be the semi-direct sum of the diffeomorphisms on the circle with two loop algebras. A class of fields admitting this asymptotic symmetry algebra and leading to well-defined conserved charges is found. The covariant Poisson bracket of the conserved charges is then shown to be centrally extended to the semi-direct sum of a Virasoro algebra and two affine algebras.
We study non-Einstein Bach-flat gravitational instanton solutions that can be regarded as the generalization of the Taub-NUT/Bolt and Eguchi-Hanson solutions of Einstein gravity to conformal gravity. These solutions include non-Einstein spaces which are either asymptotically locally flat spacetimes (ALF) or asymptotically locally Anti-de Sitter (AlAdS). Nevertheless, solutions with different asymptotic conditions exist: we find geometries that present a weakened AlAdS asymptotia, exhibiting the typical low decaying mode of conformal gravity. This permits to identify the simple Neumann boundary…
Recently, a general method for calculating conserved charges for (black hole) solutions to generally covariant gravitational theories, in any dimensions and with arbitrary asymptotic behaviors has been introduced. Equipped with this method, which can be dubbed as "solution phase space method," we calculate mass and angular momentum for the Kerr-dS black holes. Furthermore, for any choice of horizons, associated entropy and the first law of thermodynamics are derived. Interestingly, according to insensitivity of the analysis to the chosen cosmological constant, the analysis unifies the thermody…
Using the Noether Charge formulation, we study a perturbation of the conserved gravitating system. By requiring the boundary term in the variation of the Hamiltonian to depend only on the symplectic structure, we propose a general prescription for defining quasi-local ``conserved quantities'' (i.e. in the situation when the gravitating system has a non-vanishing energy flux). Applications include energy-momentum and angular momentum at spatial and null infinity, asymptotically anti-deSitter spacetimes, and thermodynamics of the isolated horizons.
Since the proposal of the AdS/CFT correspondence, made by Maldacena and Witten, there has been some controversy about the definition of conserved Noether charges associated to asymptotic isometries in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, namely, whether they form an anomalous (i.e., a nontrivial central extension) representation of the Lie algebra of the conformal group in odd bulk dimensions or not. In the present work, we shall review the derivation of these charges by using covariant phase space techniques, emphasizing the principle of locality underlying it. We shall also comment on how these is…
We revisit the asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetimes in three dimensions. Using the conformal-completion technique, we formulate the boundary conditions in a covariant fashion and construct the global charges associated with the asymptotic symmetries. The charges so constructed are conserved for the asymptotic Killing vectors fields but are not conserved for the asymptotic conformal Killing vector fields. The quantity integrated to obtain the global charge is interpreted as the Brown-York boundary stress-energy tensor and it is found not to be traceless. The trace is interpreted as the trac…
A discussion of asymptotic weak and strong Poincare' charges in metric gravity is given to identify the proper Hamiltonian boundary conditions. The asymptotic part of the lapse and shift functions is put equal to their analogues on Minkowski hyperplanes. By adding Dirac's ten extra variables at spatial infinity, metric gravity is extended to incorporate Dirac's ten extra first class constraints (the new ten momenta equal to the weak Poincare' charges) and this allows its deparametrization to parametrized Minkowski theories restricted to spacelike hyperplanes. The absence of supertranslations i…
To extend previous results on the late time behavior of massive fields, for the Dirac field propagating in the D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime we calculate analytically its asymptotic tails. We find that the massive Dirac field has an oscillatory inverse power law tail. The frequency of the oscillations depends on the mass of the field and the power law decay rate depends on the dimension of the spacetime and the mode number of the angular eigenvalues. We also compare with previous results in curved spacetimes.
We give a detailed review of construction of conserved quantities in extended theories of gravity for asymptotically maximally symmetric spacetimes and carry out explicit computations for various solutions. Our construction is based on the Killing charge method, and a proper discussion of the conserved charges of extended gravity theories with this method requires studying the corresponding charges in Einstein's theory with or without a cosmological constant. Hence we study the ADM charges (in the asymptotically flat case but in generic viable coordinates), the AD charges (in generic Einstein …
We investigate asymptotic symmetries which preserve the Bondi gauge conditions but do not preserve the asymptotic falloff conditions for the metric near the null boundary, and their connection to soft graviton theorems for scattering amplitudes. These include generalized superrotation symmetries parameterized by a smooth vector field $Y^{A}$ obeying $D_{A}Y^{A} = 0$, for which we show that the associated conserved charge can be derived by applying the Noether procedure to the Einstein-Katz action. We also discuss the connection between asymptotic symmetries and the conserved charge associated …
