We prove that the positive-dimensional part of the torsion locus of the Ceresa normal function in $\mathcal{M}_g$ is not Zariski dense when $g\geq 3$. Moreover, it has only finitely many components with generic Mumford-Tate group equal to $\mathrm{GSp}_{2g}$; these components are defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and their union is closed under the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb Q)$. More generally, we study the distribution of the torsion locus of arbitrary admissible normal functions.
We give two new examples of non-hyperelliptic curves whose Ceresa cycles have torsion images in the intermediate Jacobian. For one of them, the central value of the $L$-function of the relevant motive is non-vanishing and the Ceresa cycle is torsion in the Griffiths group, consistent with the conjectures of Beilinson and Bloch. We speculate on a possible explanation for the existence of these torsion Ceresa classes, based on some computations with cyclic Fermat quotients.

Consider the locus of smooth curves of genus g and p-rank f defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p. It is an open problem to classify which group schemes occur as the p-torsion of the Jacobians of these curves for f < g-1. We prove that the generic point of this locus has a-number 1 when f=g-2 and f=g-3. We include other results for curves with p-rank g-2 and g-3. For example, we show that the generic hyperelliptic curve with p-rank g-2 has a-number 1 and that the locus of curves with p-rank g-2 and a-number 2 is non-empty with codimension 3 in M_g. The proofs use deg…
In this paper, we show that there exist families of curves (defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p >2$) whose Jacobians have interesting $p$-torsion. For example, for every $0 \leq f \leq g$, we find the dimension of the locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ with $p$-rank at most $f$. We also produce families of curves so that the $p$-torsion of the Jacobian of each fibre contains multiple copies of the group scheme $α_p$. The method is to study curves which admit an action by $(\ZZ/2)^n$ so that the quotient is a projective line. As a result, some of these fa…
We interpret geometrically the torsion of the symmetric algebra of the ideal sheaf of a zero-dimensional scheme Z defined by $n+1$ equations in an $n$-dimensional variety. This leads us to generalise a formula of A.Dimca and S.Papadima in positive characteristic for a rational transformation with finite base locus. Among other applications, we construct an explicit example of a homaloidal curve of degree $5$ in characteristic $3$, answering negatively a question of A.V.Dória, S.H.Hassanzadeh and A.Simis.
Let C be a generic smooth curve of genus g\geqslant 4. We study normal functions and infinitesimal invariants associated to Ceresa cycles W_{k}-W_{k}^{-}, k=2,...,g-2. We show how they can be obtained from the normal function associated to the basic cycle C-C^{-} and, for k=2, we also explicitely determine the zero locus of the infinitesimal invariant. For C hyperelliptic of genus g=3, we define the K-theoretic counterpart of W_{2}-W_{2}^{-}, generalizing a construction of A. Collino, and show that it is indecomposable.
New local and global non-abelian zeta functions for elliptic curves are studied using certain refined Brill-Noether loci in moduli spaces of semi-stable bundles. Examples of these zeta functions and a justification of using only semi-stable bundles are given too. We end this paper with an appendix on the so-called Weierstrass Groups for general curves, which is motivated by a construction of Euler systems from torsion points (of elliptic curves).
We show that the zero locus of a normal function on a smooth complex algebraic variety S is algebraic provided that the normal function extends to a admissible normal function on a smooth compactification of S with torsion singularity. This result generalizes our previous result for admissible normal functions on curves [arxiv:math/0604345 [math.AG]]. It has also been obtained by M. Saito using a different method in a recent preprint [arXiv:0803.2771v2].

We study the degeneration of semipositive smooth hermitian line bundles on open complex manifolds, assuming that the metric extends well away from a codimension two analytic subset of the boundary. Using terminology introduced by R. Hain, we show that under these assumptions the so-called height jump divisors are always effective. This result is of particular interest in the context of biextension line bundles on Griffiths intermediate jacobian fibrations of polarized variations of Hodge structure of weight -1, pulled back along normal function sections. In the case of the normal function on M…
The aim of this fisrt part is to introduce, for a rather large class of hypersurface singularities with 1 dimensionnal locus, the analog of the Brieskorn lattice at the origin (the singular point of the singular locus). The main results are the finitness theorem for the corresponding (a,b)-module obtained via Kashiwara's constructibility theorem, and non torsion results for a plane curve singularity (not nessarily reduced) and for the suspension of such non torsion cases with an isolated singularity.
Let $f:S\to B$ be a fibration of curves and let $f_\astω_{S/B}=\cU\oplus \cA$ be the second Fujita decomposition of $f.$ In this paper we study a kind of Massey products, which are defined as infinitesimal invariants by the cohomology of a curve, in relation to the monodromy of certain subbundles of $\cU$. The main result states that their vanishing on a general fibre of $f$ implies that the monodromy group acts faithfully on a finite set of morphisms and is therefore finite. In the last part we apply our result in terms of the normal function induced by the Ceresa cycle. On the one hand, we p…
We prove an extension of the Kato-Saito class field theory for smooth projective schemes over a finite field to schemes with singularities. As an application, we obtain Bloch's formula for the Chow groups of 0-cycles on such schemes. We identify the Chow group of 0-cycles on a normal projective scheme over an algebraically closed field to the Suslin homology of its regular locus. Our final result is a Roitman torsion theorem for smooth quasi-projective schemes over algebraically closed fields. This completes the missing $p$-torsion part in the torsion theorem of Spiess and Szamuely.
Given a smooth toric variety $X$, the action of the torus $T$ lifts to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ of stable sheaves on $X$. Using the pioneering work of Klyacho, a fairly explicit combinatorial description of the fixed point locus $\mathcal{M}^T$ can be given (as shown by earlier work of the author). In this paper, we apply this description to the case of torsion free sheaves on a smooth toric surface $S$. A general expression for the generating function of the Euler characteristics of such moduli spaces is obtained. The generating function is expressed in terms of Euler characteristics of…
Let $π:M\to B$ be a proper holomorphic submersion between complex manifolds and ${\cal E}$ a holomorphic bundle on $M$. We study and describe explicitly the torsion subsheaf $\mathrm{Tors}(R^1π_*({\cal E}))$ of the first direct image $R^1π_*(\mathcal{E})$ under the assumption $R^0π_*(\mathcal{E})=0$. We give two applications of our results. The first concerns the locus of points in the base of a generically versal family of complex surfaces where the family is non-versal. The second application is a vanishing result for $H^0(\mathrm{Tors}(R^1π_*(\mathcal{E})))$ in a concrete situation related …

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be the moduli space of rank 2 stable torsion free sheaves with Chern classes $c_i$ on a smooth 3-fold $X$. When $X$ is toric with torus $T$, we describe the $T$-fixed locus of the moduli space. Connected components of $\mathcal{M}^T$ with constant reflexive hulls are isomorphic to products of $\mathbb{P}^1$. We mainly consider such connected components, which typically arise for any $c_1$, "low values" of $c_2$, and arbitrary $c_3$. In the classical part of the paper, we introduce a new type of combinatorics called double box configurations, which can be used to compute the g…
