We combine techniques from kinetic theory and string dualities to couple statistical matter to a non-relativistic (NR) supergravity background, enabling the theory to be formulated in a T-duality invariant form. Similarly to the relativistic case, we explicitly demonstrate that, in the NR limit, the many-strings system necessitates a viscous fluid description for the statistical matter. This is achieved using the generalized energy-momentum tensor of a perfect fluid, which remains covariant under T-duality.
We consistently incorporate Yang Mills matter fields into string corrected (deformed), D=10, N=1 Supergravity. We solve the Bianchi identities within the framework of the modified beta function favored constraints to second order in the string slope parameter $\g$ also including the Yang Mills fields. In the torsion, curvature and H sectors we find that a consistent solution is readily obtained with a Yang Mills modified supercurrent $A_{abc}$. We find a solution in the F sector following our previously developed method.
We construct a non-relativistic limit of ten-dimensional N=1 supergravity from the point of view of the symmetries, the action, and the equations of motion. This limit can only be realized in a supersymmetric way provided we impose by hand a set of geometric constraints, invariant under all the symmetries of the non-relativistic theory, that define a so-called `self-dual' Dilatation-invariant String Newton-Cartan geometry. The non-relativistic action exhibits three emerging symmetries: one local scale symmetry and two local conformal supersymmetries. Due to these emerging symmetries the Poisso…
We present a novel three-dimensional non-relativistic Chern-Simons supergravity theory invariant under a Maxwellian extended Bargmann superalgebra. We first study the non-relativistic limits of the minimal and the $\mathcal{N}=2$ Maxwell superalgebras. We show that a well-defined Maxwellian extended Bargmann supergravity requires to construct by hand a supersymmetric extension of the Maxwellian extended Bargmann algebra by introducing additional fermionic and bosonic generators. The new non-relativistic supergravity action presented here contains the extended Bargmann supergravity as a sub-cas…
Using a component formulation, we construct the supersymmetric action for a superparticle in a three-dimensional Newton-Cartan supergravity background and clarify its symmetries. Our construction proceeds by first constructing the superparticle in a flat background. Next, by boosting up the background symmetries, we replace in a first step the flat background by a Galilean supergravity background. In a second step the Galilean supergravity background is replaced by a Newton-Cartan supergravity background. We extend our results by adding a supersymmetric cosmological constant and compare the no…
In this paper, we present novel non-relativistic superalgebras which correspond to supersymmetric extensions of the enlarged extended Bargmann algebra. The three-dimensional non-relativistic Chern-Simons supergravity actions invariant under the aforementioned superalgebras are constructed. The new non-relativistic superalgebras allow to accommodate a cosmological constant in a non-relativistic supergravity theory. Interestingly, we show that one of the non-relativistic supergravity theories presented here leads to the recently introduced Maxwellian exotic Bargmann supergravity when the flat li…
In this paper we present a torsional non-relativistic Chern-Simons teleparallel (super)gravity theory in three spacetime dimensions. We start by developing the non-relativistic limit of the purely bosonic relativistic teleparallel Chern-Simons formulation of gravity. On-shell the latter yields a non-Riemannian setup with non-vanishing torsion, which, at non-relativistic level, translates into a non-vanishing spatial torsion sourced by the cosmological constant. Then we consider the three-dimensional relativistic $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons supergravity theory and obtain its non-relativistic c…
We derive a torsionfull version of three-dimensional N=2 Newton-Cartan supergravity using a non-relativistic notion of the superconformal tensor calculus. The "superconformal" theory that we start with is Schrödinger supergravity which we obtain by gauging the Schrödinger superalgebra. We present two non-relativistic N=2 matter multiplets that can be used as compensators in the superconformal calculus. They lead to two different off-shell formulations which, in analogy with the relativistic case, we call "old minimal" and "new minimal" Newton-Cartan supergravity. We find similarities but also …
We find infinite families of supersymmetric solutions of four dimensional, N=2 gauged supergravity with Lifshitz, Schrodinger and also AdS symmetries. We focus on the canonical example of a single hypermultiplet and a single vector multiplet and find that the spectrum of solutions depends crucially on whether the gaugings are electric or magnetic but to a far milder extent on the strength of the gaugings. For purely electric or purely magnetic gaugings we generically find Lifshitz solutions, while for a mixed gauging we find Schrodinger and AdS solutions. For some of the gaugings the theory ha…
In this work we present an alternative method to construct diverse non-relativistic Chern-Simons supergravity theories in three spacetime dimensions. To this end, we apply the Lie algebra expansion method based on semigroups to a supersymmetric extension of the Nappi-Witten algebra. Two different families of non-relativistic superalgebras are obtained, corresponding to generalizations of the extended Bargmann superalgebra and extended Newton-Hooke superalgebra, respectively. The expansion method considered here allows to obtain known and new non-relativistic supergravity models in a systematic…
Starting from the Maldacena-Nunez supergravity dual of N=1 super Yang-Mills theory we study the inclusion of a supersymmetry breaking gaugino mass term. We consider a class of non supersymmetric deformations of the MN solutions which have been recently proposed in the literature. We show that they can be interpreted as corresponding to the inclusion of both a mass and a condensate. We calculate the vacuum energy of the supergravity solutions showing that the N-fold vacuum degeneracy of the N=1 theory is lifted by the inclusion of a mass term.
We present non- and ultra-relativistic Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity as metric BF theories based on the extended Newton-Hooke and extended AdS Carroll superalgebras in two spacetime dimensions, respectively. The extended Newton-Hooke structure, and, in particular, the invariant metric necessary for the BF construction of non-relativistic JT supergravity, is obtained by performing an expansion of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_2$ superalgebra. Subsequently, we introduce the extended AdS$_2$ Carroll superalgebra, and the associated invariant metric, as a suitable redefinition of the extended New…
We construct the non-relativistic counterparts of some well-known supergravity solutions dual to relevant and marginal deformations of N=4 super Yang-Mills. The main tool we use is the null Melvin twist and we apply it to the N=1 and N=2* Pilch-Warner RG flow solutions as well as the Lunin-Maldacena solution dual to beta-deformations of N=4 super Yang-Mills. We also obtain a family of supergravity solutions with Schrodinger symmetry interpolating between the non-relativistic version of the N=1 Pilch-Warner and Klebanov-Witten fixed points. A generic feature of these non-relativistic background…
Recently, a non-relativistic off-shell formulation of three dimensional Newton-Cartan supergravity was proposed as the $c \rightarrow \infty$ limit of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity in arXiv:1505.02095. In the present paper we study supersymmetric backgrounds within this theory. Using integrability constraints for the non-relativistic Killing spinor equations, we explicitly construct all maximally supersymmetric solutions, which admit four supercharges. In addition to these solutions, there are $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS solutions with reduced supersymmetry. We give explicit examples of…
We present new families of non-supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity with non-relativistic symmetry, based on six-dimensional Kaehler-Einstein manifolds. In constructing these solutions, we make use of a consistent reduction to a five-dimensional gravity theory coupled to a massive scalar and vector field. This theory admits a non-relativistic CFT dual with dynamical exponent z=4, which may be uplifted to D=11 supergravity. Finally, we generalise this solution and find new solutions with various z, including z=2.
We propose an open/closed string duality in general backgrounds extending previous ideas about open string completeness by Ashoke Sen. Our proposal sets up a general version of holography that works in gravity as a tomographic principle. We argue, in particular, that previous expectations of a supergravity/Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) correspondence are naturally embedded in this conjecture and can be tested in a well-defined manner. As an example, we consider the correspondence between open string field theories on extremal D-brane setups in flat space in the large-N, large 't Hooft limit, and asy…
Using alpha'^3 terms of type IIB supergravity action we study higher order corrections to the non-relativistic non-extremal D3-brane. Utilizing the corrected solution we evaluate corrections to temperature, entropy and shear viscosity. We also compute the eta/s ratio which although within the range of validity of the supergravity approximation and in the lowest order of the correction the universal bound is respected, there is a possibility for a violation of the bound when higher terms in the expansion are taken into account.
We propose homogeneous metrics of Petrov type III that describe gyrating Schrodinger geometries as duals to some non-relativistic field theories, in which the Schrodinger symmetry is broken further so that the phase space has a linear dependence of the momentum in a selected direction. We show that such solutions can arise in four-dimensional Einstein-Weyl supergravity as well as higher-dimensional extended gravities with quadratic curvature terms coupled to a massive vector. In Einstein-Weyl supergravity, the gyrating Schrodinger solutions can be supersymmetric, preserving 1/4 of the supersym…
We show that three-dimensional General Relativity, augmented with two vector fields, allows for a non-relativistic limit, different from the standard limit leading to Newtonian gravity, that results into a well-defined action which is of the Chern-Simons type. We show that this three-dimensional `Extended Bargmann Gravity', after coupling to matter, leads to equations of motion allowing a wider class of background geometries than the ones that one encounters in Newtonian gravity. We give the supersymmetric generalization of these results and point out an important application in the context of…
A covariant closed superstring field theory, equivalent to classical ten-dimensional Type II supergravity, is presented. The defining conformal field theory is the ambitwistor string worldsheet theory of Mason and Skinner. This theory is known to reproduce the scattering amplitudes of Cachazo, He and Yuan in which the scattering equations play an important role and the string field theory naturally incorporates these results. We investigate the operator formalism description of the ambitwsitor string and propose an action for the string field theory of the bosonic and supersymmetric theories. …
We calculate relativistic phase-shifts resulting from the large impact parameter scattering of 0-branes off p-branes within supergravity. Their full functional dependence on velocity agrees with that obtained by identifying the p-branes with D-branes in string theory. These processes are also described by 0-brane quantum mechanics, but only in the non-relativistic limit. We show that an improved 0-brane quantum mechanics based on a Born-Infeld type Lagrangian also does not yield the relativistic results. Scattering of 0-branes off bound states of arbitrary numbers of 0-branes and 2-branes is a…
We define a procedure that, starting from a relativistic theory of supergravity, leads to a consistent, non-relativistic version thereof. As a first application we use this limiting procedure to show how the Newton-Cartan formulation of non-relativistic gravity can be obtained from general relativity. Then we apply it in a supersymmetric case and derive a novel, non-relativistic, off-shell formulation of three-dimensional Newton-Cartan supergravity.
We show that the general method of Lie algebra expansions can be applied to re-construct several algebras and related actions for non-relativistic gravity that have occurred in the recent literature. We explain the method and illustrate its applications by giving several explicit examples. The method can be generalized to include the construction of actions for ultra-relativistic gravity, i.e. Carroll gravity, and non-relativistic supergravity as well.
We construct families of supersymmetric solutions of type IIB and D=11 supergravity that are invariant under the non-relativistic conformal algebra for various values of dynamical exponent z greater than or equal to 4 and 3, respectively. The solutions are based on five- and seven-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifolds and generalise the known solutions with dynamical exponent z=4 for the type IIB case and z=3 for the D=11 case, respectively.
In this paper we construct the supersymmetric tensor hierarchy of N=1, d=4 supergravity. We find some differences with the general bosonic construction of 4-dimensional gauged supergravities. The global symmetry group of N=1,d=4 supergravity consists of three factors: the scalar manifold isometry group, the invariance group of the complex vector kinetic matrix and the U(1) R-symmetry group. In contrast to (half)-maximal supergravities, the latter two symmetries are not embedded into the isometry group of the scalar manifold. We identify some components of the embedding tensor with Fayet-Iliopo…
We deform the AdS/CFT Correspondence by the inclusion of a non-supersymmetric scalar mass operator. We discuss the behaviour of the dual 5 dimensional supergravity field then lift the full solution to 10 dimensions. Brane probing the resulting background reveals a potential consistent with the operator we wished to insert.
We discuss a general methodology to provide rigid, off-shell matter multiplets and actions for recently constructed non-relativistic superalgebras. The technique is based on the Lie algebra expansion, which, in the context of supersymmetry, has so far been used to obtain non-relativistic on-shell supergravity models. We first explain how the Lie algebra expansion can be implemented to generate off-shell rigid multiplets on a flat background by developing an auxiliary framework where only the lowest order behavior of the spatial and temporal vielbein is relevant. We then provide explicit exampl…
We present BPS black hole solutions in a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity with an abelian dyonic gauging of the universal hypermultiplet moduli space. This supergravity arises as the SU(3)-invariant subsector in the reduction of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. The solutions are supported by non-constant scalar, vector and tensor fields and interpolate between a unique $\textrm{AdS}_{2} \,\times\, \textrm{H}^2$ geometry in the near-horizon region and the domain-wall DW$_{4}$ (four-dimensional) description of the D2-brane at the boundary. Some special solutions with charge…
Aspects of the low energy physics of certain Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and supergravity theories are explored, using their recently presented non-perturbative description in terms of minimal string models. This regime necessarily involves non-perturbative phenomena, and the inclusion of wormhole geometries connecting multiple copies of the nearly AdS$_2$ boundary in the computation of ensemble averages of key quantities. A new "replica-scaling" limit is considered, combining the replica method and double scaling with the low energy limit. Using it, the leading free energy, entropy, and specifi…
We construct M-theory supergravity solutions with the non-relativistic Schrodinger symmetry starting from the warped AdS_5 metric with N=1 supersymmetry. We impose the condition that the lightlike direction is compact by making it a non-trivial U(1) bundle over the compact space. Sufficient conditions for such solutions are analyzed. The solutions have two supercharges for generic values of parameters, but the number of supercharges increases to six in some special cases. A Schrodinger geometry with SU(2)xSU(2)xU(1) isometry is considered as a specific example. We consider the Kaluza-Klein mod…
We construct the supergravity duals of marginal deformations of a (0,2) Landau-Ginsburg theory that describes the supersymmetric lowest Landau level. These deformations preserve supersymmetry and it is proposed that they are associated with the introduction of a phase in the (0,2) superpotential. We also consider marginal deformations of various field theories that exhibit Schrodinger symmetry and Lifshitz scaling. This includes countably-infinite examples with dynamical exponent z=2 based on the Sasaki-Einstein spaces Y^{p,q} and L^{p,q,r}, as well as an example with general dynamical exponen…
Carroll symmetries arise when the velocity of light is sent to zero (ultra-relativistic limit). In this paper, we present the construction of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity theory invariant under the so-called AdS Carroll superalgebra, which was obtained in the literature as a contraction of the AdS superalgebra. The action is characterized by two coupling constants. Subsequently, we study its flat limit, obtaining the three-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity theory invariant under the super-Carroll algebra, which is a contraction of the Poincaré superalgebra. We apply the …
We extend the search for supergravity solution duals of non-relativistic $d=3$ CFTs to $d=11$ supergravity. We consider the internal space to be an $S^2$ bundle over a product base: $S^2 \times S^2$ and $S^2 \times T^2$. For purely M-theoretic $S^2 \times S^2$, we find only magnetic fluxes preserving two supersymmetries. $S^2 \times T^2$ is far richer admitting in addition to magnetic fluxes, various non-trivial electric fluxes which break all supersymmetry.
We consider two possible flat space limits of three dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ AdS supergravity. They differ by how the supercharges are scaled with the AdS radius $\ell$: the first limit (democratic) leads to the usual super-Poincare theory, while a novel `twisted' theory of supergravity stems from the second (despotic) limit. We then propose boundary conditions such that the asymptotic symmetry algebras at null infinity correspond to supersymmetric extensions of the BMS algebras previously derived in connection to non- and ultra-relativistic limits of the $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ Virasoro …
We consider non-relativistic conformal quantum mechanical theories that arise by doing discrete light cone quantization of field theories. If the field theory has a gravity dual, then the conformal quantum mechanical theory can have a gravity dual description in a suitable finite temperature and finite density regime. Using this we compute the thermodynamic properties of the system. We give an explicit example where we display both the conformal quantum mechanical theory as well as the gravity dual. We also discuss the string theory embedding of certain backgrounds with non-relativistic confor…

We propose a SUSY variant of the action for a massless spinning particles via the inclusion of twistor variables. The action is constructed to be invariant under SUSY transformations and $τ$-reparametrizations even when an interaction field is including. The constraint analysis is achieved and the equations of motion are derived. The commutation relations obtained for the commuting spinor variables $λ$ show that the particle states have fractional statistics and spin. At once we introduce a possible massive term for the non-interacting model.
We apply the Lie algebra expansion method to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ super-Poincaré algerba in four dimensions. We define a set of p-brane projectors that induce a decomposition of the super-Poincaré algebra preparatory for the expansion. We show that starting from the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity action in four dimensions it is possible to obtain two non-relativistic supersymmetric theories, one describing strings, the other membranes.
We construct gravity solutions describing renormalization group flows relating relativistic and non-relativistic conformal theories. We work both in a simple phenomenological theory with a massive vector field, and in an N=4, d=6 gauged supergravity theory, which can be consistently embedded in string theory. These flows offer some further insight into holography for Lifshitz geometries: in particular, they enable us to give a description of the field theory dual to the Lifshitz solutions in the latter theory. We also note that some of the AdS and Lifshitz solutions in the N=4, d=6 gauged supe…
The supergravity solutions to various $p$-branes are presented and typically it breaks one quarter of supersymmetry except for the D1 brane case, where it breaks one half of supersymmetry and are manifestly non-relativistic in nature. The symmetries that the solutions enjoys are that of space and time translations, rotations, boosts but without any scaling and special conformal transformations except for $p\neq 3$. We have also constructed supersymmetric non-relativistic cascading solutions to intersecting $D3$ and $D5$ branes on both the singular as well as on deformed conifold, where the $D5…
We present solutions of type IIB supergravity with z=2 Schrodinger asymptotics that admit an extremal limit, i.e. the black hole horizon has a double zero. These solutions are obtained as TsT transformations of the charged planar black hole in AdS_5 \times S^5. Unlike the uncharged solution, the Ramond-Ramond two-form is turned on. We study the thermodynamic properties of these new solutions, and we show that the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is 1/4πeven in the extremal limit. We also consider the TsT-transformed soliton and show that, for a special radius of the compact circle, …
We rederive relativistic hydrodynamics as a Lagrangian effective theory using the doubled coordinates technique, allowing us to include dissipative terms. We include Navier-Stokes shear and bulk terms, as well as Israel-Stewart relaxation time terms, within this formalism. We show how the inclusion of shear viscosity, and the requirement of a bounded energy-momentum "vacuum", forces the inclusion of the Israel-Stewart term into the theory, thereby providing a justification for the origin and uniqueness of these terms.
We construct the basic Neveu-Schwarz (NS) brane solutions of non-relativistic string theory using longitudinal T-duality as a solution generating technique. Extending the NS background fields to a supergravity multiplet, we verify that all solutions we find are half-supersymmetric. The two perturbative solutions we find both have an interpretation as the background geometry outside a string-like object. Correspondingly, we refer to these non-Lorentzian backgrounds as winding string and unwound string solution. Whereas the winding string is part of the on-shell spectrum of non-relativistic stri…
We construct zero-temperature solutions of supergravity theories in five and four dimensions which interpolate between two copies of anti-de Sitter space, one of which preserves an abelian gauge symmetry while the other breaks it. These domain wall solutions can be lifted to solutions of type IIB string theory and eleven-dimensional supergravity. They describe quantum critical behavior and emergent relativistic conformal symmetry in a superfluid or superconducting state of a strongly coupled dual gauge theory. We include computations of frequency-dependent conductivities which exhibit power la…
We find the most general solution of 11-dimensional supergravity compatible with N=2 super-Schrodinger symmetry with six supercharges and SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) x Z_2 global symmetry. It can be viewed as a one-parameter extension of a recently constructed solution by Ooguri and Park. Our original motivation was to find the gravity dual of the non-relativistic ABJM theory. But, our analysis shows that no such solution exists within the reach of our assumptions. We discuss possible reasons for the non-existence of the desired solution. We also uplift a super-Schrodinger solution in IIB supergravit…
We find a class of non-relativistic supersymmetric solutions of IIB supergravity with non-trivial B-field that have dynamical exponent n=2 and are invariant under the Schrodinger group. For a general Sasaki-Einstein internal manifold with U(1)^3 isometry, the solutions have two real supercharges. When the internal manifold is S^5, the number of supercharges can be four. We also find a large class of non-relativistic scale invariant type IIB solutions with dynamical exponents different from two. The explicit solutions and the values of the dynamical exponents are determined by vector eigenfunct…
The non-relativistic formalism introduced by Berry and Robbins that naturally incorporates the spin-statistics connection is generalized relativistically. It is then extended to an arbitrary Kaluza-Klein space-time by a suitable generalization of the Schwinger treatment of angular momenta. This leads, in this approach, to the inclusion of the `internal' quantum numbers in the spin-statistics connection on an equal footing with spin.
