We construct the basic Neveu-Schwarz (NS) brane solutions of non-relativistic string theory using longitudinal T-duality as a solution generating technique. Extending the NS background fields to a supergravity multiplet, we verify that all solutions we find are half-supersymmetric. The two perturbative solutions we find both have an interpretation as the background geometry outside a string-like object. Correspondingly, we refer to these non-Lorentzian backgrounds as winding string and unwound string solution. Whereas the winding string is part of the on-shell spectrum of non-relativistic string theory, the unwound string only makes sense off-shell where it mediates the instantaneous gravitational force. Seen from the nine-dimensional point of view, we find that the winding string solution is sourced by a non-relativistic massive particle and that the unwound string solution is sourced by a massless Galilean particle of zero colour and spin. We explain how these two string solutions fit into a discrete lightcone quantization of string theory. We shortly discuss the basic NS five-brane and Kaluza-Klein monopole solutions and show that they are both half-supersymmetric.
We propose an exact form of the fusion matrix of the Neveu-Schwarz blocks that appear in a correlation function of four super-primary fields. Orthogonality relation satisfied by this matrix is equivalent to the bootstrap equation for the four-point super-primary correlator in the N=1 supersymmetric Liouville theory.
We calculate in details the sphere-level scattering amplitude of two Ramond-Ramond (RR) and two Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NSNS) vertex operators in type II superstring theories in Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) formalism. We then compare the expansion of this amplitude at order $α'^3$ with the eight-derivative couplings of the gravity and B-field that have been recently found based on S-dual and T-dual Ward identities. We find exact agreement. Moreover, using the above S-matrix element, we have found various couplings involving the dilaton field, and shown that they are also fully consistent wi…
We study the relations between Dirac fields living on the 2-dimensional Lorentzian cylinder and the ones living on the double-covering of the 2-dimensional de Sitter manifold, here identified as a certain coset space of the group $SL(2,R)$. We show that there is an extended notion of de Sitter covariance only for Dirac fields having the Neveu-Schwarz anti-periodicity and construct the relevant cocycle. Finally, we show that the de Sitter symmetry is naturally inherited by the Neveu-Schwarz massless Dirac field on the cylinder.
On the structure of Verma module over Virasoro and Neveu-Schwarz algebras
本文给出了B. L. Feigin和D.
We construct, generalizing appropriately the method applied by J. Teschner in the case of the Virasoro conformal blocks, the braiding and fusion matrices of the Neveu-Schwarz super-conformal blocks. Their properties allow for an explicit verification of the bootstrap equation in the NS sector of the N=1 supersymmetric Liouville field theory.
Four-point super-conformal blocks for the N = 1 Neveu-Schwarz algebra are defined in terms of power series of the even super-projective invariant. Coefficients of these expansions are represented both as sums over poles in the "intermediate" conformal weight and as sums over poles in the central charge of the algebra. The residua of these poles are calculated in both cases. Closed recurrence relations for the block coefficients are derived.
Simple analytic solution to cubic Neveu-Schwarz String Field Theory including the $GSO(-)$ sector is presented. This solution is an analog of the Erler-Schnabl solution for bosonic case and one of the authors solution for the pure $GSO(+)$ case. Gauge transformations of the new solution to others known solutions for the $NS$ string tachyon condensation are constructed explicitly. This gauge equivalence manifestly supports the early observed fact that these solutions have the same value of the action density.
We present a compact expression for a coherent vertex operator in superstring theory, in the Neveu-Schwarz sector, that can be easily extended to the Ramond sector by supersymmetric transformations in target space. We give also an explicit construction for the Ramond coherent vertex operator. These constructions provide the use of the supersymmetric version of the Del Giudice-Di Vecchia-Fubini operators and Operator Product Expansion techniques, displaying manifest BRST invariance and after normal ordering also manifest covariance. As a consistency check we compute tree level three-points scat…
A class of exact analytic solutions in the modified cubic fermionic string field theory with the GSO(-) sector is presented. This class contains the GSO(-) tachyon field and reproduces the correct value for the nonBPS D-brane tension.
We construct a Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond superstring model which is invariant under supersymmetric U(1)_V * U(1)_A gauge transformations as well as the super-general coordinate, the super local Lorentz and the super-Weyl transformations on the string world-sheet. We quantize the superstring model by covariant BRST formulation a la Batalin and Vilkovisky and noncovariant light-cone gauge formulation. Upon the quantizations the model turns out to be formulated consistently in 10+2-dimensional background spacetime involving two time dimensions.
We analyze the Gaussian and chiral supereigenvalue models in the Neveu-Schwarz sector. We show that their partition functions can be expressed as the infinite sums of the homogeneous operators acting on the elementary functions. In spite of the fact that the usual W-representations of these matrix models can not be provided here, we can still derive the compact expressions of the correlators in these two supereigenvalue models. Furthermore, the non-Gaussian (chiral) cases are also discussed.
A covariant map between the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) and pure spinor formalisms for the superstring is found which transforms the RNS and pure spinor BRST operators into each other. The key ingredient is a dynamical twisting of the ten spin-half RNS fermions into five spin-one and five spin-zero fermions using bosonic pure spinors that parameterize an SO(10)/U(5) coset. The map relates massless vertex operators in the two formalisms, and gives a new description of Ramond states which does not require spin fields. An argument is proposed for relating the amplitude prescriptions in the two for…
After introducing non-minimal variables, the midpoint insertion of Y\bar Y in cubic open Neveu-Schwarz string field theory can be replaced with an operator N_ρdepending on a constant parameter ρ. As in cubic open superstring field theory using the pure spinor formalism, the operator N_ρis invertible and is equal to 1 up to a BRST-trivial quantity. So unlike the linearized equation of motion Y\bar Y QV=0 which requires truncation of the Hilbert space in order to imply QV=0, the linearized equation N_ρQV=0 directly implies QV=0.
The no-ghost theorem for Neveu-Schwarz string is directly proved in 0-picture. The one-to-one correspondence between physical states in 0-picture and those in the conventional (-1)-picture are confirmed. It is shown that a non-trivial metric consistent with the BRST cohomology is needed to define a positive semi-definite norm in the physical Hilbert space. As a by-product, we find a new inverse picture changing operator, which is non-covariant but has non-singular operator product with itself. A possibility to construct a new gauge invariant superstring field theory is discussed.
We study general rotating string solution in the AdS(4) X CP**3 background with a B_NS holonomy turned on over ${\bf CP}^1$ $\subset $ $ {\bf CP}^3$. We find the giant magnon and single spike solutions for the string moving in this background corresponding to open spin chain. We calculate the corresponding dispersion relation among various conserved charges for both the cases. We further study the finite size effect on both the giant magnon and single spike solutions.
The appearance of non(anti)commutativity in superstring theory, satisfying the Neveu-Schwarz boundary conditions is discussed in this paper. Both an open free superstring and also one moving in a background antisymmetric tensor field are analyzed to illustrate the point that string non(anti)commutativity is a consequence of the nontrivial boundary conditions. The method used here is quite different from several other approaches where boundary conditions were treated as constraints. An interesting observation of this study is that, one requires that the bosonic sector satisfies Dirichlet bounda…
Superconformal change of variables formulas for N=1 Neveu-Schwarz vertex operator superalgebras are presented for general invertible superconformal changes of variables. Using the underlying worldsheet supergeometry of propagating superstrings, geometric proofs of the change of variables formulas are given for the case of convergent superconformal changes of variables. More general formal algebraic proofs of the change of variables formulas in the case of formal superconformal changes of variables are then given. Finally, isomorphic families of N=1 NS-VOSAs are derived from the superconformal …
We consider intersecting D-brane models which have two dimensional chiral fermions localized at the intersections. At weak coupling, the interactions of these fermions are described by generalized Gross-Neveu models. At strong coupling, these configurations are described by the dynamics of probe D-branes in a curved background spacetime. We study patterns of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in these models at weak and strong coupling, and also discuss relationships between these two descriptions.
We study an intersecting D-brane model which at low energies describes (1+1)-dimensional chiral fermions localized at defects on a stack of N_c D4-branes. Fermions at different defects interact via exchange of massless (4+1)-dimensional fields. At weak coupling this interaction gives rise to the Gross-Neveu (GN) model and can be studied using field theoretic techniques. At strong coupling one can describe the system in terms of probe branes propagating in a curved background in string theory. The chiral symmetry is dynamically broken at zero temperature and is restored above a critical tempera…
We treat RR flux backgrounds of type II string theory in the framework of closed superstring field theory based on the NSR formalism, focusing on two examples: (1) the pp-wave background supported by 5-form flux, and (2) $AdS_3\times S^3\times M_4$ supported by mixed 3-form fluxes. In both cases, we analyze the classical string field solution perturbatively, and compute the correction to the dispersion relation of string states to quadratic order in the RR flux. In the first example, our result is in a delicate way consistent with that obtained from lightcone quantization of the Green-Schwarz …
Twisted modules for N=2 supersymmetric vertex operator superalgebras are classified for the vertex operator superalgebra automorphisms which are lifts of a finite automorphism of the N=2 Neveu-Schwarz Lie superalgebra representation. These include the Ramond-twisted sectors and mirror-twisted sectors for N=2 vertex operator superalgebras, as well as twisted modules related to more general "spectral flow" representations of the N=2 Neveu-Schwarz algebra. We present the construct of twisted modules for free N=2 vertex operator superalgebras for all of the N=2 Neveu-Schwarz Lie superalgebra autom…
Nonlocal stringy versions of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio and Gross-Neveu models arise in a certain limit of holographic QCD. We analyze the phase structure at finite density and temperature at strong coupling in terms of probe branes in the gravity dual. Comparison with the phase structure of the local field theory models shows qualitative agreement with some aspects, and disagreement with others. Finally, we explain how to construct the Landau potentials for these models by taking the probe branes off-shell.
The purpose of this article is to extend the lightcone worldsheet lattice description of string theory to include the Neveu-Schwarz model. We model each component of the fermionic worldsheet field by a critical Ising model. We show that a simple choice of boundary conditions for the Ising variables leads to the half integer modes required by the model. We identify the G-parity operation within the Ising model and formulate the procedure for projecting onto the even G-parity sector. We construct the lattice version of the three open string vertex, with the necessary operator insertion at the in…
We study the dimensional reduction of fermions, both in the symmetric and in the broken phase of the 3-d Gross-Neveu model at large N. In particular, in the broken phase we construct an exact solution for a stable brane world consisting of a domain wall and an anti-wall. A left-handed 2-d fermion localized on the domain wall and a right-handed fermion localized on the anti-wall communicate with each other through the 3-d bulk. In this way they are bound together to form a Dirac fermion of mass m. As a consequence of asymptotic freedom of the 2-d Gross-Neveu model, the 2-d correlation length ξ=…
We generalize the result of Voronov (1988) to give an expression for the super Mumford form $μ$ on the moduli spaces of super Riemann surfaces with Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz punctures in the limit where the number of punctures is large compared to the genus. In the case of Neveu-Schwarz punctures we consider the super Mumford form over the component of the moduli space corresponding to an odd spin structure. The super Mumford form $μ$ can be used to create a measure whose integral computes scattering amplitudes of superstring theory. We express $μ$ in terms of local bases of $H^0(Σ, ω^j)$ for $…
It is now well known that non-local observables in critical statistical lattice models, polymers and percolation for example, may be modelled in the continuum scaling limit by logarithmic conformal field theories. Fusion rules for such theories, sometimes referred to as logarithmic minimal models, have been intensively studied over the last ten years in order to explore the representation-theoretic structures relevant to non-local observables. Motivated by recent lattice conjectures, this work studies the fusion rules of the $N=1$ supersymmetric analogues of these logarithmic minimal models in…
We generalize the result of Voronov (1988) to give an expression for the super Mumford form $μ$ on the moduli spaces of super Riemann surfaces with Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz punctures. In the Ramond case we take the number of punctures to be large compared to the genus. We consider for the case of Neveu-Schwarz punctures the super Mumford form over the component of the moduli space corresponding to an odd spin structure. The super Mumford form $μ$ can be used to create a measure whose integral computes scattering amplitudes of superstring theory. We express $μ$ in terms of local bases of $H^0(X…
We construct a complete action for open superstring field theory that includes the Neveu-Schwarz sector and the Ramond sector. For the Neveu-Schwarz sector, we use the string field in the large Hilbert space of the superconformal ghost sector, and the action in the Neveu-Schwarz sector is the same as the Wess-Zumino-Witten-like action of the Berkovits formulation. For the Ramond sector, it is known that the BRST cohomology on an appropriate subspace of the small Hilbert space reproduces the correct spectrum, and we use the string field projected to this subspace. We show that the action is inv…
The lengthy discussion and derivations given in this paper have been corrected, and completed with additional results and greater simplicity. We show that the high temperature limits of the heterotic E8xE8 and Spin(32)/Z2 strings and their Type I A/B superstring duals are finite and convergent. The Hagedorn growth of the degeneracies in the string mass level expansion is suppressed by an exponential linear in the mass level number for both heterotic strings, and suppressed by the exponential of the negative square root of the mass level number for the Type IB superstring. However, in the massl…
We study an RNS string with one end fixed on a $D0$-brane and the other end free as a qualitative guide to the spectrum of hadrons containing one very heavy quark. The mixed boundary conditions break half of the world-sheet supersymmetry. Boson-fermion masses can still be matched if space-time is 9 dimensional; thus SO(8) triality still plays a role in the spectrum, although full space-time supersymmetry does not survive. We quantize the system in a temporal-like gauge where $X^0 \sim τ$. Only odd $α$ and even $d$ R modes remain, while the NS oscillators $b$ become odd-integer moded. Although …
We discuss semiclassical quantization of circular pulsating strings in AdS3 x S3 background with and without the Neveu-Schwarz- Neveu-Schwarz (NS-NS) flux. We find the equations of motion corresponding to the quadratic action in bosonic sector in terms of scalar quantities and invariants of the geometry. The general equations for studying physical perturbations along the string in an arbitrary curved spacetime are written down using covariant formalism. We discuss the stability of these string configurations by studying the solutions of the linearized perturbed equations of motion.
We study $AdS_3 \times S^1 \times Y$ supersymmetric string theory backgrounds with Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux that are dual to ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal theories on the boundary. We classify all worldsheet vertex operators that correspond to space-time chiral primaries. We compute space-time chiral ring structure constants for operators in the zero spectral flow sector using the operator product expansion in the worldsheet theory. We find that the structure constants take a universal form that depends only on the topological data of the ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal theory on $Y$.
