The star-comb lemma is a standard tool in infinite graph theory, which states that for every infinite set $U$ of vertices in a connected graph $G$ there exists either a subdivided infinite star in $G$ with all leaves in $U$, or an infinite comb in $G$ with all teeth in $U$.
In this paper, we elaborate a counterpart of the star-comb lemma for directed graphs. More precisely, we prove that for every infinite set $U$ of vertices in a strongly connected directed graph $D$, there exists a strongly connected butterfly minor of $D$ with infinitely many teeth in $U$ that is either shaped by a star or shaped by a comb, or is a chain of triangles.
We complete the characterization of the digraphs $D$ for which the induced $D$-removal lemma has polynomial bounds, answering a question of Alon and Shapira. We also study the analogous problem for $k$-colored complete graphs. In particular, we prove a removal lemma with polynomial bounds for Gallai colorings.
Comparability graphs are a popular class of graphs. We introduce as the digraph analogue of comparability graphs the class of comparability digraphs. We show that many concepts such as implication classes and the knotting graph for a comparability graph can be naturally extended to a comparability digraph. We give a characterization of comparability digraphs in terms of their knotting graphs. Semicomplete comparability digraphs are a prototype of comparability digraphs. One instrumental technique for analyzing the structure of comparability graphs is the Triangle Lemma for graphs. We generaliz…
The notion of robust expansion has played a central role in the solution of several conjectures involving the packing of Hamilton cycles in graphs and directed graphs. These and other results usually rely on the fact that every robustly expanding (di)graph with suitably large minimum degree contains a Hamilton cycle. Previous proofs of this require Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma and so this fact can only be applied to dense, sufficiently large robust expanders. We give a proof that does not use the Regularity Lemma and, indeed, we can apply our result to suitable sparse robustly expanding digrap…
We prove that an idempotent operation generates a loop from a strongly connected digraph containing directed cycles of all lengths under very mild (local) algebraic assumptions. Using the result, we reprove the existence of a weakest non-trivial idempotent equations, and that a strongly connected digraph with algebraic length 1 compatible with a Taylor term has a loop.
In a series of three papers we develop an end space theory for directed graphs. As for undirected graphs, the ends of a digraph are points at infinity to which its rays converge. Unlike for undirected graphs, some ends are joined by limit edges; these are crucial for obtaining the end space of a digraph as a natural (inverse) limit of its finite contraction minors. As our main result in this first paper of our series we show that the notion of directions of an undirected graph, a tangle-like description of its ends, extends to digraphs: there is a one-to-one correspondence between the `directi…
In this work, we give a structural lemma on merges of typical sequences, a notion that was introduced in 1991 [Lagergren and Arnborg, Bodlaender and Kloks, both ICALP 1991] to obtain constructive linear time parameterized algorithms for treewidth and pathwidth. The lemma addresses a runtime bottleneck in those algorithms but so far it does not lead to asymptotically faster algorithms. However, we apply the lemma to show that the cutwidth and the modified cutwidth of series parallel digraphs can be computed in $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ time.
We give two combinatorial proofs of the fact that the number of loopless digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$ with no isolated vertices and with exactly one Eulerian tour up to a cyclic shift is $\frac{1}{2}(n-1)!C_{n}$, where $C_{n}$ denotes the $n$-th Catalan number. We construct a bijection with a set of labeled rooted plane trees and with a set of valid parenthesis arrangements.
We extend the Grundy number and the ochromatic number, parameters on graph colorings, to digraph colorings, we call them {\emph{digrundy number}} and {\emph{diochromatic number}}, respectively. First, we prove that for every digraph the diochromatic number equals the digrundy number (as it happen for graphs). Then, we prove the interpolation property and the Nordhaus-Gaddum relations for the digrundy number, and improve the Nordhaus-Gaddum relations for the dichromatic and diachromatic numbers bounded previously by the authors in [Electron. J. Combin. 25 (2018) no. 3, Paper {\#} 3.51, 17 pp.]
Let $G$ be a digraph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$. Let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix with outdegrees of vertices of $G$. Nikiforov \cite{Niki} proposed to study the convex combinations of the adjacency matrix and diagonal matrix of the degrees of undirected graphs. Liu et al. \cite{LWCL} extended the definition to digraphs. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, the matrix $A_α(G)$ of a digraph $G$ is defined as $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ The largest modulus of the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ is called the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$, denoted by $λ_α(G)$. This paper proves some extremal results about the spe…
Let $D(G)$ and $D^Q(G)= Diag(Tr) + D(G)$ be the distance matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of a simple strongly connected digraph $G$, respectively, where $Diag(Tr)=\textrm{diag}(D_1,D_2,$ $\ldots,D_n)$ be the diagonal matrix with vertex transmissions of the digraph $G$. To track the gradual change of $D(G)$ into $D^Q(G)$, in this paper, we propose to study the convex combinations of $D(G)$ and $Diag(Tr)$ defined by $$D_α(G)=αDiag(Tr)+(1-α)D(G), \ \ 0\leq α\leq1.$$ This study reduces to merging the distance spectral and distance signless Laplacian spectral theories. The eigenvalue …
We prove that for every digraph $D$ and every choice of positive integers $k$, $\ell$ there exists a digraph $D^*$ with girth at least $\ell$ together with a surjective acyclic homomorphism $ψ\colon D^*\to D$ such that: (i) for every digraph $C$ of order at most $k$, there exists an acyclic homomorphism $D^*\to C$ if and only if there exists an acyclic homomorphism $D\to C$; and (ii) for every $D$-pointed digraph $C$ of order at most $k$ and every acyclic homomorphism $φ\colon D^*\to C$ there exists a unique acyclic homomorphism $f\colon D\to C$ such that $φ=f\circψ$. This implies the main res…
Given a digraph $D=(V,A)$, a set $B\subset V$ is a packing set in $D$ if there are no arcs joining vertices of $B$ and for any two vertices $x,y\in B$ the sets of in-neighbors of $x$ and $y$ are disjoint. The set $S$ is a dominating set (an open dominating set) in $D$ if every vertex not in $S$ (in $V$) has an in-neighbor in $S$. Moreover, a dominating set $S$ is called a total dominating set if the subgraph induced by $S$ has no isolated vertices. The packing sets of maximum cardinality and the (total, open) dominating sets of minimum cardinality in digraphs are studied in this article. We pr…
The idiosyncratic polynomial of a graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$ is the characteristic polynomial of the matrix $ A + y(J-A-I)$, where $I$ is the identity matrix and $J$ is the all-ones matrix. It follows from a theorem of Hagos (2000) combined with an earlier result of Johnson and Newman (1980) that the idiosyncratic polynomial of a graph is reconstructible from the multiset of the idiosyncratic polynomial of its vertex-deleted subgraphs. For a digraph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$, we define its idiosyncratic polynomial as the characteristic polynomial of the matrix $ A + y(J-A-I)+zA^{T…
Let $D$ be a connected weighted digraph. The relation between the vertex weighted complexity (with a fixed root) of the line digraph of $D$ and the edge weighted complexity (with a fixed root) of $D$ has been given in (L. Levine, Sandpile groups and spanning trees of directed line graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 350-364) and, independently, in (S. Sato, New proofs for Levine's theorems, Linear Algebra Appl. 435 (2011) 943-952). In this paper, we obtain a relation between the vertex weighted complexity of the middle digraph of $D$ and the edge weighted complexity of $D$. Particularl…
Ramanujan graphs have fascinating properties and history. In this paper we explore a parallel notion of Ramanujan digraphs, collecting relevant results from old and recent papers, and proving some new ones. Almost-normal Ramanujan digraphs are shown to be of special interest, as they are extreme in the sense of an Alon-Boppana theorem, and they have remarkable combinatorial features, such as small diameter, Chernoff bound for sampling, optimal covering time and sharp cutoff. Other topics explored are the connection to Cayley graphs and digraphs, the spectral radius of universal covers, Alon's …
It follows from a theorem of Lovász that if $ D $ is a finite digraph with $ r\in V(D) $ then there is a spanning subdigraph $ E $ of $ D $ such that for every vertex $ v\neq r $ the following quantities are equal: the local connectivity from $ r $ to $ v $ in $ D $, the local connectivity from $ r $ to $ v $ in $ E $ and the indegree of $ v $ in $ E $. In infinite combinatorics cardinality is often an overly rough measure to obtain deep results and it is more fruitful to capture structural properties instead of just equalities between certain quantities. The best known example for such a resu…
The dichromatic number of $D$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ(D)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that $D$ admits an acyclic $k$-coloring. We use $mader_{\overrightarrowχ}(F)$ to denote the smallest integer $k$ such that if $\overrightarrowχ(D)\ge k$, then $D$ contains a subdivision of $F$. A digraph $F$ is called Mader-perfect if for every subdigraph $F'$ of $F$, ${\rm mader }_{\overrightarrowχ}(F')=|V(F')|$. We extend octi digraphs to a larger class of digraphs and prove that it is Mader-perfect, which generalizes a result of Gishboliner, Steiner and Szabó [Dichromatic number and forced subd…

Many polynomial invariants are defined on graphs for encoding the combinatorial information and researching them algebraically. In this paper, we introduce the cycle polynomial and the path polynomial of directed graphs for counting cycles and paths, respectively. They satisfy recurrence relations with respect to elementary edge or vertex operations. They are related to other polynomials and can also be generalized to the bivariate cycle polynomial, the bivariate path polynomial and the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. And a most general digraph polynomial satisfying such a linear recurrence …
In this paper, we present enumeration algorithms to list all preferred extensions of an argumentation framework. This task is equivalent to enumerating all maximal semikernels of a directed graph. For directed graphs on $n$ vertices, all preferred extensions can be enumerated in $O^*(3^{n/3})$ time and there are directed graphs with $Ω(3^{n/3})$ preferred extensions. We give faster enumeration algorithms for directed graphs with at most $0.8004\cdot n$ vertices occurring in $2$-cycles. In particular, for oriented graphs (digraphs with no 2-cycles) one of our algorithms runs in time $O(1.2321^n…
Directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) can be characterised as directed graphs whose strongly connected components are isolated vertices. Using this restriction on the strong components, we discover that when $m = cn$, where $m$ is the number of directed edges, $n$ is the number of vertices, and $c < 1$, the asymptotic probability that a random digraph is acyclic is an explicit function $p(c)$, such that $p(0) = 1$ and $p(1) = 0$. When $m = n(1 + μn^{-1/3})$, the asymptotic behaviour changes, and the probability that a digraph is acyclic becomes $n^{-1/3} C(μ)$, where $C(μ)$ is an explicit function of…
The Surjective H-Colouring problem is to test if a given graph allows a vertex-surjective homomorphism to a fixed graph H. The complexity of this problem has been well studied for undirected (partially) reflexive graphs. We introduce endo-triviality, the property of a structure that all of its endomorphisms that do not have range of size 1 are automorphisms, as a means to obtain complexity-theoretic classifications of Surjective H-Colouring in the case of reflexive digraphs. Chen [2014] proved, in the setting of constraint satisfaction problems, that Surjective H-Colouring is NP-complete if H …
In this paper we consider the directed path-width and directed tree-width of recursively defined digraphs. As an important combinatorial tool, we show how the directed path-width and the directed tree-width can be computed for the disjoint union, order composition, directed union, and series composition of two directed graphs. These results imply the equality of directed path-width and directed tree-width for all digraphs which can be defined by these four operations. This allows us to show a linear-time solution for computing the directed path-width and directed tree-width of all these digrap…
