We establish the Soliton Resolution Conjecture for the radial critical non-linear heat equation in dimension $D\geq 3.$ Thus, every finite energy solution resolves, continuously in time, into a finite superposition of asymptotically decoupled copies of the ground state and free radiation.
In this paper, we establish the soliton resolution for the energy critical wave equation with inverse square potential in the radial case and in all dimensions $N\geq3$. The structure of the radial linear operator $\mathcal{L}_a :=-Δ+\frac{a}{|x|^2}=A^*A$, is essential for the channel of energy, where $A$ is a first order differential operator and $A^*$ is its adjoint operator. Modulation and analysis of the multi-solitons are performed in the function spaces $\dot{H}^1_a(\Bbb R^N)\times L^2(\Bbb R^N)$ associated with $\mathcal{L}_a$.
In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.
We consider the focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation for radially symmetric initial data in space dimensions $D \ge 4$. This equation has a unique (up to sign and scale) nontrivial, finite energy stationary solution $W$, called the ground state. We prove that every finite energy solution with bounded energy norm resolves, continuously in time, into a finite superposition of asymptotically decoupled copies of the ground state and free radiation.
Consider the energy-critical focusing wave equation in odd space dimension $N\geq 3$. The equation has a nonzero radial stationary solution $W$, which is unique up to scaling and sign change. In this paper we prove that any radial, bounded in the energy norm solution of the equation behaves asymptotically as a sum of modulated $W$s, decoupled by the scaling, and a radiation term. The proof essentially boils down to the fact that the equation does not have purely nonradiative multisoliton solutions. The proof overcomes the fundamental obstruction for the extension of the 3D case (treated in our…
Existence and uniqueness in Minkowski space of entire downward translating solitons with prescribed values at infinity for a scalar curvature flow equation. The radial case translates into an ordinary differential equation and the general case into a fully non-linear elliptic PDE on R^n.
In this paper, we study the global existence of classical solutions to the three dimensional ideal invicid compressible and heat conductive fluids with radial symmetrical data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^3)$. Our proof is based on the symmetric hyperbolic structure of the system.
Consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a potential with a single negative eigenvalue. It has solitons with negative small energy, which are asymptotically stable, and, if the nonlinearity is focusing, then also solitons with positive large energy, which are unstable. In this paper we classify the global dynamics below the second lowest energy of solitons under small mass and radial symmetry constraints.
We consider the focusing energy-critical quintic nonlinear wave equation in three dimensional Euclidean space. It is known that this equation admits a one-parameter family of radial stationary solutions, called solitons, which can be viewed as a curve in $ \dot H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^3) \times H^{s-1}_x(\mathbb{R}^3)$, for any $s > 1/2$. By randomizing radial initial data in $ \dot H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^3) \times H^{s-1}_x(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for $s > 5/6$, which also satisfy a certain weighted Sobolev condition, we produce with high probability a family of radial perturbations of the soliton which give rise …
In this paper we consider global and non-global radial solutions of the focusing energy--critical wave equation on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N$ where $N \geq 5$ is odd. We prove that if the solution remains bounded in the energy space as you approach the maximal forward time of existence, then along a sequence of times converging to the maximal forward time of existence, the solution decouples into a sum of dynamically rescaled solitons, a free radiation term, and an error tending to zero in the energy space. If, in addition, we assume a bound on the evolution that rules out formation of m…
We consider the quadratic semilinear wave equation in six dimensions. This energy critical problem admits a ground state solution, which is the unique (up to scaling) positive stationary solution. We prove that any spherically symmetric solution, that remains bounded in the energy norm, evolves asymptotically to a sum of decoupled modulated ground states, plus a radiation term. As a by-product of the approach we prove the non-existence of multisoliton solutions that do not emit any radiation. The proof follows the method initiated for large odd dimensions by the last three authors, reducing th…
We continue our study of damped nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In our previous work we considered fixed positive damping and proved a form of the soliton resolution conjecture for radial solutions. In contrast, here we consider damping which decreases in time to 0. In the class of radial data we again establish soliton resolution provided the damping goes to 0 sufficiently slowly. While our previous work relied on invariant manifold theory, here we use the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality applied to a suitable Lyapunov functional.
Consider the energy-critical focusing wave equation in space dimension $N\geq 3$. The equation has a nonzero radial stationary solution $W$, which is unique up to scaling and sign change. It is conjectured (soliton resolution) that any radial, bounded in the energy norm solution of the equation behaves asymptotically as a sum of modulated $W$s, decoupled by the scaling, and a radiation term. A nonradiative solution of the equation is by definition a solution whose energy in the exterior $\{|x|>|t|\}$ of the wave cone vanishes asymptotically as $t\to +\infty$ and $t\to -\infty$. In a previous w…
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a focusing cubic term and a defocusing quintic nonlinearity in dimensions two and three. The core of this article is the notion of stability of solitary waves. We recall the two standard notions of orbital stability in the context of nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and show that they must be considered as independent from each other. We investigate numerically the notion of orbital stability of ground states in the radially symmetric case, confirming existing conjectures or leading to new ones.
Consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a potential with a single negative eigenvalue. It has solitons with negative small energy, which are asymptotically stable, and solitons with positive large energy, which are unstable. We classify the global dynamics into 9 sets of solutions in the phase space including both solitons, restricted by small mass, radial symmetry, and an energy bound slightly above the second lowest one of solitons. The classification includes a stable set of solutions which start near the first excited solitons, approach the ground states locally in space …
For the focusing energy critical wave equation in 5D, we construct a solution showing the inelastic nature of the collision of any two solitons, except the special case of two solitons of same scaling and opposite signs. Beyond its own interest as one of the first rigorous studies of the collision of solitons for a non-integrable model, the case of the quartic gKdV equation being partially treated by the authors in previous works, this result can be seen as part of a wider program aiming at establishing the soliton resolution conjecture for the critical wave equation. This conjecture has alrea…
We study positive radial solutions of quasilinear elliptic systems with a gradient term in the form $$ \left\{ \begin{aligned} Δ_{p} u&=v^{m}|\nabla u|^α&&\quad\mbox{ in }Ω,\\ Δ_{p} v&=v^β|\nabla u|^{q} &&\quad\mbox{ in }Ω, \end{aligned} \right. $$ where $Ω\subset\R^N$ $(N\geq 2)$ is either a ball or the whole space, $1<p<\infty$, $m, q>0$, $α\geq 0$, $0\leq β\leq m$ and $(p-1-α)(p-1-β)-qm\neq 0$. We first classify all the positive radial solutions in case $Ω$ is a ball, according to their behavior at the boundary. Then we obtain that the system has non-constant global solutions if and only if…
We derive a local Gaussian upper bound for the $f$-heat kernel on complete smooth metric measure space $(M,g,e^{-f}dv)$ with nonnegative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature, which generalizes the classic Li-Yau estimate. As applications, we obtain a sharp $L_f^1$-Liouville theorem for $f$-subharmonic functions and an $L_f^1$-uniqueness property for nonnegative solutions of the $f$-heat equation, assuming $f$ is of at most quadratic growth. In particular, any $L_f^1$-integrable $f$-subharmonic function on gradient shrinking or steady Ricci solitons must be constant. We also provide explicit $f$-heat ke…
We prove that the pullback of the SU(n)-soliton of Chern class $c_2=1$ over $\mathbb S^4$ via the radial projection $π:\mathbb B^5\setminus\{0\}\to\mathbb S^4$ minimizes the Yang-Mills energy under the fixed boundary trace constraint. In particular this shows that stationary Yang-Mills connections in high dimension can have singular sets of codimension 5.
We study the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb R^d \times SO(d)$. It is well-known that in dimensions $5 \leq d \leq 9$ this model admits homothetically shrinking solitons, i.e., self-similar blowup solutions, with an explicit example given by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Weinkove solution under small equivariant perturbations and thus extend a result by the second author and Donninger for $d=5$ to higher dimensions. At the same time, we provide a general framework for proving stability of self-similar blowup solutions to a large clas…
We will prove the non-existence of positive radially symmetric solution of the nonlinear elliptic equation $\frac{n-1}{m}Δv^m+αv+βx\cdot\nabla u=0$ in $R^n$ when $n\ge 3$, $0<m\le\frac{n-2}{n}$, $α<0$ and $β\le 0$. Let $n\ge 3$ and $g=v^{\frac{4}{n+2}}dx^2$ be a metric on $\R^n$ where $v$ is a radially symmetric solution of the above elliptic equation in $R^n$ with $m=\frac{n-2}{n+2}$, $α=\frac{2β+ρ}{1-m}$ and $ρ\in R$. For $n\ge 3$, $m=\frac{n-2}{n+2}$, we will prove that $\lim_{r\to\infty}r^2v^{1-m}(r)=\frac{(n-1)(n-2)}ρ$ if $β>\fracρ{n-2}>0$, the scalar curvature $R(r)\toρ$ as $r\to\infty$ …
Exterior channel of energy estimates for the radial wave equation were first considered in three dimensions by Duyckaerts, the first author, and Merle, and recently for the 5-dimensional case by the first, second, and fourth authors. In this paper we find the general form of the channel of energy estimate in all odd dimensions for the radial free wave equation. This will be used in a companion paper to establish soliton resolution for equivariant wave maps in 3 dimensions exterior to the ball B(0,1), and in all equivariance classes.
