We will prove the non-existence of positive radially symmetric solution of the nonlinear elliptic equation $\frac{n-1}{m}Δv^m+αv+βx\cdot\nabla u=0$ in $R^n$ when $n\ge 3$, $0<m\le\frac{n-2}{n}$, $α<0$ and $β\le 0$. Let $n\ge 3$ and $g=v^{\frac{4}{n+2}}dx^2$ be a metric on $\R^n$ where $v$ is a radially symmetric solution of the above elliptic equation in $R^n$ with $m=\frac{n-2}{n+2}$, $α=\frac{2β+ρ}{1-m}$ and $ρ\in R$. For $n\ge 3$, $m=\frac{n-2}{n+2}$, we will prove that $\lim_{r\to\infty}r^2v^{1-m}(r)=\frac{(n-1)(n-2)}ρ$ if $β>\fracρ{n-2}>0$, the scalar curvature $R(r)\toρ$ as $r\to\infty$ if either $β>\fracρ{n-2}>0$ or $ρ=0$ and $α>0$ holds, and $\lim_{r\to\infty}R(r)=0$ if $ρ<0$ and $α>0$. We give a simple different proof of a result of P.Daskalopoulos and N.Sesum \cite{DS2} on the positivity of the sectional curvature of rotational symmetric Yamabe solitons $g=v^{\frac{4}{n+2}}dx^2$ with $v$ satisfying the above equation with $m=\frac{n-2}{n+2}$. We will also find the exact value of the sectional curvature of such Yamabe solitons at the origin and at infinity.
In this paper, we use less topological restrictions and more geometric and analytic conditions to obtain some sufficient conditions on Yamabe solitons such that their metrics are Yamabe metrics, that is, metrics of constant scalar curvature. More precisely, we use properties of conformal vector fields to find several sufficient conditions on the soliton vector fields of Yamabe solitons under which their metrics are of Yamabe metrics.
In this paper, we consider the scalar curvature of Yamabe solitons. In particular we show that, with natural conditions and non positive Ricci curvature, any complete Yamabe soliton has constant scalar curvature, namely, it is a Yamabe metric. We also show that the quadratic decay at infinity of the Ricci curvature of a complete non-compact Yamabe soliton has non-negative scalar curvature. A new proof of Kazdan-Warner condition is also presented.
We study the convergence of complete non-compact conformally flat solutions to the Yamabe flow to Yamabe steady solitons. We also prove the existence of Type II singularities which develop at either a finite time $T$ or as $t \to +\infty$.
We will give a simple proof that the metric of any compact Yamabe gradient soliton (M,g) is a metric of constant scalar curvature when the dimension of the manifold n>2.
We consider, in the Euclidean setting, a conformal Yamabe-type equation related to a potential generalization of the classical constant scalar curvature problem and which naturally arises in the study of Ricci solitons structures. We prove existence and nonexistence results, focusing on the radial case, under some general hypothesis on the potential.
Let 0<m<(n-2)/n, n>2, $α=(2β+ρ)/(1-m)$ and $β>mρ/(n-2-mn)$ for some constant $ρ>0$. Suppose v is a radially symmetric symmetric solution of $\frac{n-1}{m}Δv^m+αv+βx\cdot\nabla v=0$, v>0, in $R^n$. When m=(n-2)/(n+2), the metric $g=v^{4/(n+2)}dx^2$ corresponds to a locally conformally flat Yamabe shrinking gradient soliton with positive sectional curvature. We prove that the solution $v$ of the above nonlinear elliptic equation has the exact decay rate $\lim_{r\to\infty}r^2v(r)^{1-m}=\frac{2(n-1)(n(1-m)-2)}{(1-m)(α(1-m)-2β)}$.
We present some results on a fully nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem and a Harnack type inequality for general conformally invariant fully nonlinear second order elliptic equations.
In this paper we produce families of Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature equal to $2^{-k} {n \choose k}$ by performing the connected sum of two given compact {\em non degenerate} $n$--dimensional solutions $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ of the (positive) $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.
We study asymptotic behaviors of positive solutions to the Yamabe equation and the $σ$k-Yamabe equation near isolated singular points and establish expansions up to arbitrary orders. Such results generalize an earlier pioneering work by Caffarelli, Gidas, and Spruck, and a work by Korevaar, Mazzeo, Pacard, and Schoen, on the Yamabe equation, and a work by Han, Li, and Teixeira on the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation. The study is based on a combination of classification of global singular solutions and an analysis of linearized operators at these global singular solutions. Such linearized equations are u…
We give conditions for the existence of regular optimal partitions, with an arbitrary number $\ell\geq 2$ of components, for the Yamabe equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. To this aim, we study a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system of $\ell$ equations, related to the Yamabe equation. We show that this system has a least energy solution with nontrivial components if $\dim M\geq 10$, $(M,g)$ is not locally conformally flat and satisfies an additional geometric assumption whenever $\dim M=10$. Moreover, we show that the limit profiles of the components of the solution separat…
In this paper we consider Yamabe type problem for higher order curvatures on manifolds with totally geodesic boundaries. We prove local gradient and second derivative estimates for solutions to the fully nonlinear elliptic equations associated with the problems.
Let $(M^n,g),~n\ge 3$ be a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold with compact boundary and $f$ a smooth function on $\partial M$. In this paper we show that for a large class of such manifolds, there exists a metric within the conformal class of $g$ that is complete, has zero scalar curvature on $M$ and has mean curvature $f$ on the boundary. The problem is equivalent to finding a positive solution to an elliptic equation with a non-linear boundary condition with critical Sobolev exponent.
Given an isoparametric function $f$ on the $n$-dimensional round sphere, we consider functions of the form $u=w\circ f$ to reduce the semilinear elliptic problem \[ -Δ_{g_0}u+λu=λ | u\ | ^{p-1}u\qquad\text{ on }\mathbb{S}^n \] with $λ>0$ and $1<p$, into a singular ODE in $[0,π]$ of the form $w'' + \frac{h(r)}{\sin r} w' + \fracλ{\ell^2}\ (| w|^{p-1}w - w\ )=0$, where $h$ is an strictly decreasing function having exactly one zero in this interval and $\ell$ is a geometric constant. Using a double shooting method, together with a result for oscillating solutions to this kind of ODE, we obtain a …
One way to generalize the boundary Yamabe problem posed by Escobar is to ask if a given metric on a compact manifold with boundary can be conformally deformed to have vanishing $σ_k$-curvature in the interior and constant $H_k$-curvature on the boundary. When restricting to the closure of the positive $k$-cone, this is a fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic boundary value problem with fully nonlinear Robin-type boundary condition. We prove a general bifurcation theorem which allows us to construct examples of compact Riemannian manifolds $(X,g)$ for which this problem admits multiple non-homoth…
We consider a nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem on locally conformally flat compact manifolds with boundary. The main technique we used is to derive boundary $C^2$ estimates directly from boundary $C^0$ estimates. In particular, the result is a generalization of the work by Escobar.
Our primary purpose is to study a class of strongly coupled nonlinear elliptic systems with critical growth in a compact Riemannian manifold with constant scalar curvature. Using a gluing technique and perturbation arguments, we show the existence of singular solutions asymptotic to a Fowler-type solution near the isolated singularity.
The study of the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the Weyl-Schouten curvature tensor of a Riemannian metric, the so called $σ_k$ curvature, has produced many fruitful results in conformal geometry in recent years. In these studies, the deforming conformal factor is considered to be a solution of a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE. Important advances have been made in recent years in the understanding of the analytic behavior of solutions of the PDE. However, the singular behavior of these solutions, which is important in describing many important questions in conformal geometry, is little u…
We study an optimal M-partition problem for the Yamabe equation on the round sphere, in the presence of some particular symmetries. We show that there is a correspondence between solutions to this problem and least-energy sign-changing symmetric solutions to the Yamabe equation on the sphere with precisely M nodal domains. The existence of an optimal partition is established through the study of the limit profiles of least-energy solutions to a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system on the sphere.
We clarify how close a second order fully nonlinear equation can come to uniform ellipticity, through counting large eigenvalues of the linearized operator. This suggests an effective and novel way to understand the structure of fully nonlinear equations of elliptic and parabolic type. As applications, we solve a fully nonlinear version of the Loewner-Nirenberg problem and a noncompact complete version of fully nonlinear Yamabe problem. Our method is delicate as shown by a topological obstruction.
We prove the existence of regular optimal $G$-invariant partitions, with an arbitrary number $\ell\geq 2$ of components, for the Yamabe equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ when $G$ is a compact group of isometries of $M$ with infinite orbits. To this aim, we study a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system of $\ell$ equations, related to the Yamabe equation. We show that this system has a least energy $G$-invariant solution with nontrivial components and we show that the limit profiles of the its components separate spatially as the competition parameter goes to $-\infty$, givin…
This article is concerned with a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending of one real positive parameter and involving a critical nonlinearity. As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic critical equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the {Heisenberg group} $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. Our approach is based on pure variational methods and locally sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous arguments.
This article uses the iterative schemes and perturbation methods to completely solve the Han-Li conjecture, i.e. the general boundary Yamabe problem with prescribed constant scalar curvature and constant mean curvature on compact manifolds $ (M, \partial M, g) $ with non-empty smooth boundary, $ \dim M \geqslant 3 $. It is equivalent to show the existence of a real, positive, smooth solution of $ -\frac{4(n -1)}{n - 2} Δ_{g} u + R_{g} u = λu^{\frac{n+2}{n - 2}} $ in $ M $, $ \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν} + \frac{n-2}{2} h_{g} u = \frac{n-2}{2} ζu^{\frac{n}{n - 2}} $ on $ \partial M $ with some…
We prove sharp pointwise blow-up estimates for finite-energy sign-changing solutions of critical equations of Schrödinger-Yamabe type on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n \ge 3$. This is a generalisation of the so-called $C^0$-theory for positive solutions of Schrödinger-Yamabe type equations. To deal with the sign-changing case we develop a method of proof that combines an \emph{a priori} bubble-tree analysis with a finite-dimensional reduction, and reduces the proof to obtaining sharp \emph{a priori} blow-up estimates for a linear problem.
We establish quantitative asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of a family of nonlinear elliptic equations on the half cylinder near the end. This unifies the study of isolated singularities of some semilinear elliptic equations, such as the Yamabe equation, Hardy-Hénon equation etc.
In this paper we introduce an integer-valued degree for second order fully nonlinear elliptic operators with nonlinear oblique boundary conditions. We also give some applications to the existence of solutions of certain nonlinear elliptic equations arising from a Yamabe problem with boundary and reflector problems.
Gursky-Streets introduced a formal Riemannian metric on the space of conformal metrics in a fixed conformal class of a compact Riemannian four-manifold in the context of the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. The geodesic equation of Gursky-Streets' metric is a fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation and Gursky-Streets have proved uniform $C^{0, 1}$ regularity for a perturbed equation. Gursky-Streets apply the results and parabolic smoothing of Guan-Wang flow to show that the solution of $σ_2$-Yamabe problem is unique. A key ingredient is the convexity of Chang-Yang's $\cF$-functional along the (smoot…
We use blow up analysis for local integral equations to prove compactness of solutions to higher order critical elliptic equations provided the potentials only have non-degenerate zeros. Secondly, corresponding to Schoen's Weyl tensor vanishing conjecture for the Yamabe equation on manifolds, we establish a Laplacian vanishing rate of the potentials at blow up points of solutions.
We show that all nonnegative solutions of the critical semilinear elliptic equation involving the regional fractional Laplacian are locally universally bounded. This strongly contrasts with the standard fractional Laplacian case. Second, we consider the fractional critical elliptic equations with nonnegative potentials. We prove compactness of solutions provided the potentials only have non-degenerate zeros. Corresponding to Schoen's Weyl tensor vanishing conjecture for the Yamabe equation on manifolds, we establish a Laplacian vanishing rate of the potentials at blow-up points of solutions.
We studied the asymptotic behavior of local solutions for strongly coupled critical elliptic systems near an isolated singularity. For the dimension less than or equal to five we prove that any singular solution is asymptotic to a rotationally symmetric Fowler type solution. This result generalizes the celebrated work due to Caffarelli, Gidas, and Spruck [1] who studied asymptotic proprieties to the classic Yamabe equation. In addition, we generalize similar results by Marques [11] for inhomogeneous context, that is, when the metric is not necessarily conformally flat.
We consider the elliptic-elliptic, focussing Davey-Stewartson equations, which have an explicit bright line soliton solution. The existence of a family of periodic solitons, which have the profile of the line soliton in the longitudinal spatial direction and are periodic in the transverse spatial direction, is established using dynamical systems arguments. We also show that the line soliton is linearly unstable with respect to perturbations in the transverse direction.
This article concerns a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending on one real positive parameter and involving a subcritical nonlinearity (for the critical case we refer to G. Molica Bisci and D. Repovš, Yamabe-type equations on Carnot groups, Potential Anal. 46:2 (2017), 369-383; arXiv:1705.10100 [math.AP]). As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. The main approach is based on variational me…

The soliton dynamics for a general class of nonlinear focusing Schrödinger problems in presence of non-constant external (local and nonlocal) potentials is studied by taking as initial datum the ground state solution of an associated autonomous elliptic equation.
The soliton dynamics in the semiclassical limit for a weakly coupled nonlinear focusing Schrödinger systems in presence of a nonconstant potential is studied by taking as initial data some rescaled ground state solutions of an associate elliptic system.
We address a two-dimensional nonlinear elliptic problem with a finite-amplitude periodic potential. For a class of separable symmetric potentials, we study the bifurcation of the first band gap in the spectrum of the linear Schrödinger operator and the relevant coupled-mode equations to describe this bifurcation. The coupled-mode equations are derived by the rigorous analysis based on the Fourier--Bloch decomposition and the Implicit Function Theorem in the space of bounded continuous functions vanishing at infinity. Persistence of reversible localized solutions, called gap solitons, beyond th…
