In this paper we prove the soliton resolution conjecture for all times, for all solutions in the energy space, of the co-rotational wave map equation. To our knowledge this is the first such result for all initial data in the energy space for a wave-type equation. We also prove the corresponding results for radial solutions, which remain bounded in the energy norm, of the cubic (energy-critical) nonlinear wave equation in space dimension 4.
We provide a simple proof of the existence of dark solitons of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. Moreover, our proof allows for a broader class of inhomogeneities and gives some new properties of the solutions. We also apply our approach to the defocusing cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a periodic potential.
In this article we consider the Cauchy problem for the cubic focusing nonlinear Schrö\-dinger (NLS) equation on the line with initial datum close to a particular $N$-soliton. Using inverse scattering and the $\bar{\partial}$ method we establish the decay of the $L^{\infty}$ norm of the residual term in time.
Combining the usual energy functional with a higher-order conserved quantity originating from integrability theory, we show that the black soliton is a local minimizer of a quantity that is conserved along the flow of the cubic defocusing NLS equation in one space dimension. This unconstrained variational characterization gives an elementary proof of the orbital stability of the black soliton with respect to perturbations in $H^2(\mathbb{R})$.
We consider the one-dimensional cubic fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$i\partial_tu-(-Δ)^σu+|u|^{2}u=0,$$ where $σ\in (\frac12,1)$ and the operator $(-Δ)^σ$ is the fractional Laplacian of symbol $|ξ|^{2σ}$. Despite of lack of any Galilean-type invariance, we construct a new class of traveling soliton solutions of the form $$u(t,x)=e^{-it(|k|^{2σ}-ω^{2σ})}Q_{ω,k}(x-2tσ|k|^{2σ-2}k),\quad k\in\mathbb{R},\ ω>0$$ by a rather involved variational argument.
We consider the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation: \[ i\partial_t u = -Δu - |u|^2u + |u|^4u. \] In the first part of the paper, we analyze the one-parameter family of ground-state solitons associated to this equation with particular attention to the shape of the associated mass/energy curve. Additionally, we are able to characterize the kernel of the linearized operator about such solitons and to demonstrate that they occur as optimizers for a one-parameter family of inequalities of Gagliardo--Nirenberg type. Building on this work, in the latter part of the paper we prove that scatt…

We consider the focusing cubic half-wave equation on the real line $$i \partial_t u + |D| u = |u|^2 u, \ \ \widehat{|D|u}(ξ)=|ξ|\hat{u}(ξ), \ \ (t,x)\in \Bbb R_+\times \Bbb R.$$ We construct an asymptotic global-in-time compact two-soliton solution with arbitrarily small $L^2$-norm which exhibits the following two regimes: (i) a transient turbulent regime characterized by a dramatic and explicit growth of its $H^1$-norm on a finite time interval, followed by (ii) a saturation regime in which the $H^1$-norm remains stationary large forever in time.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a focusing cubic term and a defocusing quintic nonlinearity in dimensions two and three. The core of this article is the notion of stability of solitary waves. We recall the two standard notions of orbital stability in the context of nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and show that they must be considered as independent from each other. We investigate numerically the notion of orbital stability of ground states in the radially symmetric case, confirming existing conjectures or leading to new ones.
We consider the two dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, $u_t + \partial_{x_1}(Δu + u^p) = 0, (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb{R}^2$. It is known that solitons are stable for nonlinearities $p < 3$ and unstable for $p > 3$, which was established by Anne de Bouard in [5] generalizing the arguments of Bona-Souganidis-Strauss in [1] for the gKdV equation. The $L^2$-critical case with $p=3$ has been open and in this paper we prove that solitons are unstable in the cubic ZK equation. This matches the situation with the critical gKdV eq…
For both the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLS) as well as the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation in one space dimension we consider the set ${\bf M}_N$ of pure $N$-soliton states, and their associated multisoliton solutions. We prove that (i) the set ${\bf M}_N$ is a uniformly smooth manifold, and (ii) the ${\bf M}_N$ states are uniformly stable in $H^s$, for each $s>-\frac12$. One main tool in our analysis is an iterated Backlund transform, which allows us to nonlinearly add a multisoliton to an existing soliton free state (the soliton addition map) or alternatively to remove…
We use the inverse scattering transform, the auto-Backlund transformation and the steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou to obtain the asymptotic stability of the solitons in the cubic NLS (nonlinear Schrodinger) equation.
Consider the focusing 4D cubic wave equation \[ \partial_{tt}u-Δu-u^{3}=0,\quad \mbox{on}\ (t,x)\in [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}^{4}.\] The main result states the existence in energy space $\dot{H}^{1}\times L^{2}$ of multi-solitary waves where each traveling wave is generated by Lorentz transform from a specific excited state, with different but collinear Lorentz speeds. The specific excited state is deduced from the non-degenerate sign-changing state constructed in Musso-Wei [34]. The proof is inspired by the techniques developed for the 5D energy-critical wave equation and the nonlinear Klei…
We pursue our work on the asymptotic regimes of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for bi-axial ferromagnets. We put the focus on the cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation, which is known to describe the dynamics in a regime of strong easy-axis anisotropy. In any dimension, we rigorously prove this claim for solutions with sufficient regularity. In this regime, we additionally classify the one-dimensional solitons of the Landau-Lifshitz equation and quantify their convergence towards the solitons of the one-dimensional cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation.
The nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with derivative cubic nonlinearity admits a family of solitons, which are orbitally stable in the energy space. In this work, we prove the orbital stability of multi-solitons configurations in the energy space, under suitable assumptions on the speeds and frequencies of the composing solitons. The main ingredients of the proof are modulation theory, energy coercivity and monotonicity properties.
We study the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the cubic-quintic combination of attractive and repulsive nonlinearities, and a trapping potential represented by a delta-function. We determine all bound states with a positive soliton profile through explicit formulas and, using bifurcation theory, we describe their behavior with respect to the propagation constant. This information is used to prove their stability by means of the rigorous theory of orbital stability of Hamiltonian systems. The presence of the trapping potential gives rise to a regime where two stable bound sta…
We consider a system of coupled cubic Schrödinger equations in one space dimension \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} i \partial_t u + \partial_x^2 u +(|u|^2 + ω|v|^2) u =0\\ i \partial_t v + \partial_x^2 v+ (|v|^2 + ω|u|^2) v=0 \end{cases}\quad (t,x)\in {\bf R}\times{\bf R}, \end{equation*} in the non-integrable case $0 < ω< 1$. First, we justify the existence of a symmetric 2-solitary wave with logarithmic distance, more precisely a solution of the system satisfying \[ \lim_{t\to +\infty}\left\| \begin{pmatrix} u(t) \\ v(t)\end{pmatrix} - \begin{pmatrix} e^{it}Q (\cdot - \frac{1}{2} \log (Ωt) -…
In a recent paper, Brendle showed the uniqueness of the Bryant soliton among 3-dimensional $κ$-solutions. In this paper, we present an alternative proof for this fact and show that compact $κ$-solutions are rotational symmetric. Our proof arose from independent work relating to our Strong Stability Theorem for singular Ricci flows.
