The main purpose is to establish two theorems about closed 0-definable subsets $A$ of an affine space $K^{n}$ over a Hensel minimal field $K$. The first, being a non-Archimedean counterpart of one from o-minimal geometry, states that every such subset $A$ is the zero locus of a continuous 0-definable function on $K^{n}$. The second is a definable, non-Archimedean version of the Tietze-Urysohn extension theorem. The proofs use ubiquity of clopen sets in non-Archimedean geometry and a description of definable sets.
In this note we investigate the question whether a henselian valued field carries a non-trivial 0-definable henselian valuation (in the language of rings). It follows from the work of Prestel and Ziegler that there are henselian valued fields which do not admit a 0-definable non-trivial henselian valuation. We give conditions on the residue field which ensure the existence of a parameter-free definiton. In particular, we show that a henselian valued field admits a non-trivial 0-definable valuation when the residue field is separably closed or sufficiently non-henselian, or when the absolute Ga…
We study the question which henselian fields admit definable henselian valuations (with or without parameters). We show that every field which admits a henselian valuation with non-divisible value group admits a parameter-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuation. In equicharacteristic $0$, we give a complete characterization of henselian fields admitting a parameter-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuation. We also obtain partial characterization results of fields admitting 0-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuations. We then draw some Galois-theoretic conclusions from our results.
Admitting a non-trivial $p$-henselian valuation is a weaker assumption on a field than admitting a non-trivial henselian valuation. Unlike henselianity, $p$-henselianity is an elementary property in the language of rings. We are interested in the question when a field admits a non-trivial 0-definable $p$-henselian valuation (in the language of rings). We give a classification of elementary classes of fields in which the canonical $p$-henselian valuation is uniformly 0-definable. We then apply this to show that there is a definable valuation inducing the ($t$-)henselian topology on any ($t$-)he…
We show that dp-minimal valued fields are henselian and that a dp-minimal field admitting a definable type V topology is either real closed, algebraically closed or admits a non-trivial definable henselian valuation. We give classifications of dp-minimal ordered abelian groups and dp-minimal ordered fields without additional structure.
We continue our earlier investigation of dp-finite fields. We show that the "heavy sets" of [6] are exactly the sets of full dp-rank. As a consequence, full dp-rank is a definable property in definable families of sets. If $I$ is the group of infinitesimals, we show that $1 + I$ is the group of multiplicative infinitesimals. From this, we deduce that the canonical topology is a field topology. Lastly, we consider the (unlikely) conjecture that the canonical topology is a V-topology. Assuming this conjecture, we deduce the classification of dp-finite fields conjectured by Halevi, Hasson, and Ja…
We prove the dp-finite case of the Shelah conjecture on NIP fields. If K is a dp-finite field, then K admits a non-trivial definable henselian valuation ring, unless K is finite, real closed, or algebraically closed. As a consequence, the conjectural classification of dp-finite fields holds. Additionally, dp-finite valued fields are henselian. Lastly, if K is an unstable dp-finite expansion of a field, then K admits a unique definable V-topology.
We study the algebraic implications of the non-independence property (NIP) and variants thereof (dp-minimality) on infinite fields, motivated by the conjecture that all such fields which are neither real closed nor separably closed admit a definable henselian valuation. Our results mainly focus on Hahn fields and build up on Will Johnson's preprint "dp-minimal fields", arXiv: 1507.02745v1, July 2015.
Peterzil and Starchenko have proved the following surprising generalization of Chow's theorem: A closed analytic subset of a complex algebraic variety that is definable in an o-minimal structure, is in fact an algebraic subset. In this paper, we prove a non-archimedean analogue of this result.
Let $K$ be a field. The étale open topology on the $K$-points $V(K)$ of a $K$-variety $V$ was introduced in our previous work. The étale open topology is non-discrete if and only if $K$ is large. If $K$ is separably, real, $p$-adically closed then the étale open topology agrees with the Zariski, order, valuation topology, respectively. We show that existentially definable sets in perfect large fields behave well with respect to this topology: such sets are finite unions of étale open subsets of Zariski closed sets. This implies that existentially definable sets in arbitrary perfect large field…
A direct application of Zorn's Lemma gives that every Lipschitz map $f:X\subset \mathbb{Q}_p^n\to \mathbb{Q}_p^\ell$ has an extension to a Lipschitz map $\widetilde f: \mathbb{Q}_p^n\to \mathbb{Q}_p^\ell$. This is analogous, but more easy, to Kirszbraun's Theorem about the existence of Lipschitz extensions of Lipschitz maps $S\subset \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^\ell$. Recently, Fischer and Aschenbrenner obtained a definable version of Kirszbraun's Theorem. In the present paper, we prove in the $p$-adic context that $\widetilde f$ can be taken definable when $f$ is definable, where definable mea…
It is shown that the existence of a measurable cardinal is equiconsistent to a model of ZFC in which there is no ordinal-definable, stationary, costationary subset of $ω_1$
To a definable subset of Z_p^n (or to a scheme of finite type over Z_p) one can associate a tree in a natural way. It is known that the corresponding Poincare series P(X) = \sum_i N_i X^i is rational, where N_i is the number of nodes of the tree at depth i. This suggests that the trees themselves are far from arbitrary. We state a conjectural, purely combinatorial description of the class of possible trees and provide some evidence for it. We verify that any tree in our class indeed arises from a definable set, and we prove that the tree of a definable set (or of a scheme) lies in our class in…
We study $Σ_1(ω_1)$-definable sets (i.e. sets that are equal to the collection of all sets satisfying a certain $Σ_1$-formula with parameter $ω_1$) in the presence of large cardinals. Our results show that the existence of a Woodin cardinal and a measurable cardinal above it imply that no well-ordering of the reals is $Σ_1(ω_1)$-definable, the set of all stationary subsets of $ω_1$ is not $Σ_1(ω_1)$-definable and the complement of every $Σ_1(ω_1)$-definable Bernstein subset of ${}^{ω_1}ω_1$ is not $Σ_1(ω_1)$-definable. In contrast, we show that the existence of a Woodin cardinal is compatible …
In this mostly expository note, I give a very quick proof of the definable Chow theorem of Peterzil and Starchenko using the Bishop-Stoll theorem and a volume estimate for definable sets due to Nguyen and Valette. The volume estimate says that any $d$-dimensional definable subset of $S\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ in an o-minimal expansion of the ordered field of real numbers satisfies the inequality $\mathcal{H}^d(\{x\in S:\lVert x\rVert<r\})\leq Cr^d$, where $\mathcal{H}^d$ denotes the $d$-dimensional Hausdorff measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $C$ is a constant depending on $S$. A closely related volu…
We propose new structures called almost o-minimal structures and $\mathfrak X$-structures. The former is a first-order expansion of a dense linear order without endpoints such that the intersection of a definable set with a bounded open interval is a finite union of points and open intervals. The latter is a variant of van den Dries and Miller's analytic geometric categories and Shiota's $\mathfrak X$-sets and $\mathfrak Y$-sets. In them, the family of definable sets are closed only under proper projections unlike first-order structures. We demonstrate that an $\mathfrak X$-expansion of an ord…
We extend Solovay's theorem about definable subsets of the Baire space to the generalized Baire space ${}^λλ$, where $λ$ is an uncountable cardinal with $λ^{<λ}=λ$. In the first main theorem, we show that that the perfect set property for all subsets of ${}^λλ$ that are definable from elements of ${}^λ\mathrm{Ord}$ is consistent relative to the existence of an inaccessible cardinal above $λ$. In the second main theorem, we introduce a Banach-Mazur type game of length $λ$ and show that the determinacy of this game, for all subsets of ${}^λλ$ that are definable from elements of ${}^λ\mathrm{Ord}…
In this paper, we prove a definable version of Kirszbraun's theorem in a non-Archimedean setting for definable families of functions in one variable. More precisely, we prove that every definable function $f : X \times Y \to \mathbb{Q}_p^s$, where $X\subset \mathbb{Q}_p$ and $Y \subset \mathbb{Q}_p^r$, that is $λ$-Lipschitz in the first variable, extends to a definable function $\tilde{f}:\mathbb{Q}_p\times Y \to \mathbb{Q}_p^s$ that is $λ$-Lipschitz in the first variable.
We define "t-stratifications", a strong notion of stratifications for Henselian valued fields $K$ of equi-characteristic 0, and prove that they exist. In contrast to classical stratifications in Archimedean fields, t-stratifications also contain non-local information about the stratified sets. For example, they do not only see the singularities in the valued field, but also those in the residue field. Like Whitney stratifications, t-stratifications exist for different classes of subsets of $K^n$, e.g. algebraic subvarieties or certain classes of analytic subsets. The general framework are defi…
We prove some general estimates for exponential sums over subsets of finite fields which are definable in the language of rings. This generalizes both the classical exponential sum estimates over varieties over finite fields due to Weil, Deligne and others, and the result of Chatzidakis, van den Dries and Macintyre concerning the number of points of those definable sets. As a first application, there is no formula in the language of rings that defines for infinitely many primes an ``interval'' in Z/pZ that is neither bounded nor with bounded complement.
We prove a tight bound on the number of realized $0/1$ patterns (or equivalently on the Vapnik-Chervonenkis codensity) of definable families in models of the theory of algebraically closed valued fields with a non-archimedean valuation. Our result improves the best known result in this direction proved by Aschenbrenner, Dolich, Haskell, Macpherson and Starchenko, who proved a weaker bound in the restricted case where the characteristics of the field $K$ and its residue field are both assumed to be $0$. The bound obtained here is optimal and without any restriction on the characteristics. We ob…
We demonstrate the following uniform local definable cell decomposition theorem in this paper. Consider a structure $\mathcal M = (M, <,0,+, \ldots)$ elementarily equivalent to a locally o-minimal expansion of the group of reals $(\mathbb R, <,0,+)$. Let $\{A_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$ be a finite family of definable subsets of $M^{m+n}$. There exist an open box $B$ in $M^n$ containing the origin and a finite partition of definable sets $M^m \times B = X_1 \cup \ldots \cup X_k$ such that $B=(X_1)_b \cup \ldots \cup (X_k)_b$ is a definable cell decomposition of $B$ for any $b \in M^m$ and $X_i \cap A_λ= \emp…
We give an example of a dense o-minimal structure in which there is a definable quotient that cannot be eliminated, even after naming parameters. Equivalently, there is an interpretable set which cannot be put in parametrically definable bijection with any definable set. This gives a negative answer to a question of Eleftheriou, Peterzil, and Ramakrishnan. Additionally, we show that interpretable sets in dense o-minimal structures admit definable topologies which are "tame" in several ways: (a) they are Hausdorff, (b) every point has a neighborhood which is definably homeomorphic to a definabl…
We show that every definable nested family of closed and bounded subsets of a $P$-minimal field $K$ has non-empty intersection. As an application we answer a question of Darnière and Halupczok showing that $P$-minimal fields satisfy the "extreme value property": for every closed and bounded subset $U\subseteq K$ and every interpretable continuous function $f\colon U \to Γ_K$ (where $Γ_K$ denotes the value group), $f(U)$ admits a maximal value. Two further corollaries are obtained as a consequence of their work. The first one shows that every interpretable subset of $K\timesΓ_K^n$ is already in…
Let $\mathcal{R}$ be an $\mathrm{NIP}$ expansion of $(\mathbb{R},<,+)$ by closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and continuous functions $f : \mathbb{R}^m \to \mathbb{R}^n$. Then $\mathcal{R}$ is generically locally o-minimal. It follows that if $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is definable in $\mathcal{R}$ then the $C^k$-points of $X$ are dense in $X$ for any $k \geq 0$. This follows from a more general theorem on $\mathrm{NIP}$ expansions of locally compact groups, which itself follows from a result on quotients of definable sets by equivalence relations which are externally definable and $\bigwedge$-d…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. Leonard Lipshitz has introduced a manageable notion of subanalytic sets of the unit polydisc. This class contains the class of affinoid sets and is stable under projection. We associate to a subanalytic set its counterpart in the Berkovich polydisc. This allows us to give a new insight to the dimension of subanalytic sets using the degrees of the completed residual fields. With these methods we obtain new results, such as the invariance of the dimension under subanalytic bijection in any characteristic. Then we study more generally subs…
We prove that for p-optimal fields (a very large subclass of p-minimal fields containing all the known examples) a cell decomposition theorem follows from methods going back to Denef's paper [Invent. Math, 77 (1984)]. We derive from it the existence of definable Skolem functions and strong p-minimality. Then we turn to strongly p-optimal fields satisfying the Extreme Value Property (a property which in particular holds in fields which are elementarily equivalent to a p-adic one). For such fields K, we prove that every definable subset of KxK^d whose fibers are inverse images by the valuation o…
We consider definable topological spaces of dimension one in o-minimal structures, and state several equivalent conditions for when such a topological space $\left(X,τ\right)$ is definably homeomorphic to an affine definable space (namely, a definable subset of $M^{n}$ with the induced subspace topology). One of the main results says that it is sufficient for $X$ to be regular and decompose into finitely many definably connected components.
We study the topology of metric spaces which are definable in o-minimal expansions of ordered fields. We show that a definable metric space either contains an infinite definable discrete set or is definably homeomorphic to a definable set equipped with its euclidean topology. This implies that a separable metric space which is definable in an o-minimal expansion of the real field is definably homeomorphic to a definable set equipped with its euclidean topology. We show that almost every point in a definable metric space has a neighborhood which is definably homeomorphic to an open definable su…
We show that rings of $S$-integers of a global function field $K$ of odd characteristic are first-order universally definable in $K$. This extends work of Koenigsmann and Park who showed the same for $\mathbb{Z}$ in $\mathbb{Q}$ and the ring of integers in a number field, respectively. We also give another proof of a theorem of Poonen and show that the set of non-squares in a global field of characteristic $\neq 2$ is diophantine. Finally, we show that the set of pairs $(x,y)$ in $(K^{\times})^2$ such that $x$ is not a norm in $K(\sqrt{y})$ is diophantine over $K$ for any global field $K$ of c…
We introduce a new notion of tame geometry for structures admitting an abstract notion of balls. The notion is named b-minimality and is based on definable families of points and balls. We develop a dimension theory and prove a cell decomposition theorem for b-minimal structures. We show that b-minimality applies to the theory of Henselian valued fields of characteristic zero, generalizing work by Denef - Pas. Structures which are o-minimal, v-minimal, or p-minimal and which satisfy some slight extra conditions are also b-minimal, but b-minimality leaves more room for nontrivial expansions. Th…
Dense pairs of geometric topological fields have tame open core, that is, every definable open subset in the pair is already definable in the reduct. We fix a minor gap in the published version of van den Dries's seminal work on dense pairs of o-minimal groups, and show that every definable unary function in a dense pair of geometric topological fields agrees with a definable function in the reduct, off a small definable subset, that is, a definable set internal to the predicate. For certain dense pairs of geometric topological fields without the independence property, whenever the underlying …
Given an o-minimal structure ${\mathcal M}$ with a group operation, we show that for a properly convex subset $U$, the theory of the expanded structure ${\mathcal M}'=({\mathcal M},U)$ has definable Skolem functions precisely when ${\mathcal M}'$ is valuational. As a corollary, we get an elementary proof that the theory of any such ${\mathcal M}'$ does not satisfy definable choice.
We introduce a non real-valued measure on the definable sets contained in the finite part of a cartesian power of an o-minimal field $R$. The measure takes values in an ordered semiring, the Dedekind completion of a quotient of $R$. We show that every measurable subset of $R^n$ with non-empty interior has positive measure, and that the measure is preserved by definable $C^1$-diffeomorphisms with Jacobian determinant equal to $\pm 1$.
The aim of this paper is to study the dimensions and standard part maps between the field of $p$-adic numbers ${{\mathbb Q}_p}$ and its elementary extension $K$ in the language of rings $L_r$. We show that for any $K$-definable set $X\subseteq K^m$, $\text{dim}_K(X)\geq \text{dim}_{{\mathbb Q}_p}(X\cap {{\mathbb Q}_p}^m)$. Let $V\subseteq K$ be convex hull of $K$ over ${{\mathbb Q}_p}$, and $\text{\st}: V\rightarrow {{\mathbb Q}_p}$ be the standard part map. We show that for any $K$-definable function $f:K^m\rightarrow K$, there is definable subset $D\subseteq{{\mathbb Q}_p}^m$ such that ${{\m…
In this paper we work in an arbitrary o-minimal structure with definable Skolem functions and we prove that definably connected, locally definable manifolds are uniformly definably path connected, have an admissible cover by definably simply connected, open definable subsets and, definable paths and definable homotopies on such locally definable manifolds can be lifted to locally definable covering maps. These properties allows us to obtain the main properties of the general o-minimal fundamental group, including: invariance and comparison results; existence of universal locally definable cove…
