Discrete global symmetries of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs are studied via two operations: gauging and twisted compactification. We consider gauging of discrete symmetries in several well-known 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs, including $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ SQCD with $2n$ flavors, theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ of type $A_{2n-1}$, and Argyres--Douglas theories of type $(A_N, A_N)$, as well as propose new 4d SCFTs as a result. The wreathing technique, which involves gauging a subgroup of the automorphism group of the quiver diagram of the corresponding 3d mirror theory, is exploited. This allows us to understand several properties of discretely gauged theories, including moduli spaces and how discrete gauging affects the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the 1-form symmetry and the 0-form flavor symmetry. Many examples are viewed through the lens of the Argyres--Seiberg duality and its generalization. We also examine discrete gauging of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ SQCD with 4 flavors by various $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroups of the permutation group $S_4$ using the superconformal index. Regarding compactification, we propose a magnetic quiver for 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ SQCD with $2n$ flavors compactified on a circle with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twist. The twisted compactification by non-invertible symmetries of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory with gauge group $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ is revisited. The non-invertible symmetry naturally gives rise to a $\mathbb{Z}_k$ action on the scalar fields parametrizing the moduli space. Upon examining the $\mathbb{Z}_k$ invariant chiral ring of the Higgs branch, we find that, in addition to the largest branch of the moduli space that is expected to be captured by the ABJ(M) theory, there exist in general nilpotent operators that lead to a branch of the moduli space which is a radical ideal.
The introduction of (non-)geometric fluxes allows for N=1 moduli stabilisation in a De Sitter vacuum. The aim of this letter is to assess to what extent this is true in N=4 compactifications. First we identify the correct gauge algebra in terms of gauge and (non-)geometric fluxes. We then show that this algebra does not lead to any of the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions. In particular, the gaugings that one obtains from flux compactifications involve non-semi-simple algebras, while the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions consist of direct products of (semi-)simple algebras.
We perform the Lorentz-covariant non-Abelian gauging of supermembrane (M-2 brane) action. This is a generalization of our previous work based on teleparallel formulation, in which Lorentz covariance was not manifest. We introduce the Killing supervector ξ^{A I} with the adjoint index I for a non-Abelian gauge group H. This formulation is applicable to the compactification of supermembrane from eleven dimensions into D dimensions, such as H = SO(11-D) for the compactification M_{11} \to S^{11-D} \times M_D (1\le D \le 9).
Einstein's Theory of General Relativity was formulated as a gauge theory of Lorentz symmetry by Utiyama in 1956, while the Einstein-Cartan gravitational theory was formulated by Kibble in 1961 as the gauge theory of Poincare transformations. In a noncommutative space-time with canonical commutation relations between the coordintes, Lorentz symmetry is violated and field theories constructed on such space-times have instead the so-called twisted Poincare invariance. In this paper a gauge theory formulation of noncommutative gravity is proposed based on the twisted Poincare symmetry together wit…
We consider no-scale extended supergravity models as they arise from string and M-theory compactifications in presence of fluxes. The special role of gauging axion symmetries for the Higgs and superHiggs mechanism is outlined.
Based on the correspondence between the N = 1 superstring compactifications with fluxes and the N = 4 gauged supergravities, we study effective N = 1 four-dimensional supergravity potentials arising from fluxes and gaugino condensates in the framework of orbifold limits of (generalized) Calabi-Yau compactifications. We give examples in heterotic and type II orientifolds in which combined fluxes and condensates lead to vacua with small supersymmetry breaking scale. We clarify the respective roles of fluxes and condensates in supersymmetry breaking, and analyze the scaling properties of the grav…
We present non-Abelian gaugings of supermembrane for general isometries for compactifications from eleven-dimensions, starting with Abelian case as a guide. We introduce a super Killing vector in eleven-dimensional superspace for a non-Abelian group G associated with the compact space B for a general compactification, and couple it to a non-Abelian gauge field on the world-volume. As a technical tool, we use teleparallel superspace with no manifest local Lorentz covariance. Interestingly, the coupling constant is quantized for the non-Abelian group G, due to its generally non-trivial mapping π…
Non-invertible symmetries have recently been understood to provide interesting contraints on RG flows of QFTs. In this work, we show how non-invertible symmetries can also be used to generate entirely new RG flows, by means of so-called "non-invertible twisted compactification". We illustrate the idea in the example of twisted compactifications of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) to three dimensions. After giving a catalogue of non-invertible symmetries descending from Montonen-Olive duality transformations of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we show that twisted compactification by non-invert…
We describe free differential algebras for non-abelian one and two form gauge potentials in four dimensions deriving the integrability conditions for the corresponding curvatures. We show that a realization of these algebras occurs in M-theory compactifications on twisted tori with constant four-form flux, due to the presence of antisymmetric tensor fields in the reduced theory.
We study compactifications of Matrix theory on twisted tori and non-commutative versions of them. As a first step, we review the construction of multidimensional twisted tori realized as nilmanifolds based on certain nilpotent Lie algebras. Subsequently, matrix compactifications on tori are revisited and the previously known results are supplemented with a background of a non-commutative torus with non-constant non-commutativity and an underlying non-associative structure on its phase space. Next we turn our attention to 3- and 6-dimensional twisted tori and we describe consistent backgrounds …
The maximally supersymmetric type IIB pp-wave is compactified on spatial circles, with and without an auxiliary rotational twist. All spatial circles of constant radius are identified. Without the twist, an S$^1$ compactification can preserve 24, 20 or 16 supercharges. $T^2$ compactifications can preserve 20, 18 or 16 supercharges; $T^3$ compactifications can preserve 18 or 16 supercharges and higher compactifications preserve 16 supercharges. The worldsheet theory of this background is discussed. The T-dual and decompactified type IIA and M-theoretic solutions which preserve 24 supercharges a…
We perform a systematic analysis of generic string flux compactifications, making use of Exceptional Generalized Geometry (EGG) as an organizing principle. In particular, we establish the precise map between fluxes, gaugings of maximal 4d supergravity and EGG, identifying the complete set of gaugings that admit an uplift to 10d heterotic or type IIB supegravity backgrounds. Our results reveal a rich structure, involving new deformations of 10d supergravity backgrounds, such as the RR counterparts of the $β$-deformation. These new deformations are expected to provide the natural extension of th…
We study a torus-like compactification of type IIB maximally supersymmetric PP-wave background. As the most general case, we discuss a T^8 compactification of all the transverse directions. A nontrivial structure of the isometry group requires an additional light-like compactification. This additional S^1 fiber is twisted on the T^8. We determine the spectrum of closed strings in this twisted torus background and compute the thermal partition function.
In this paper we prove the theorem that there exists no 7--dimensional Lie group manifold G of weak G2 holonomy. We actually prove a stronger statement, namely that there exists no 7--dimensional Lie group with negative definite Ricci tensor Ric_{IJ}. This result rules out (supersymmetric and non--supersymmetric) Freund--Rubin solutions of M--theory of the form AdS_4\times G and compactifications with non--trivial 4--form fluxes of Englert type on an internal group manifold G. A particular class of such backgrounds which, by our arguments are excluded as bulk supergravity compactifications cor…
We point out a simple realization of gauge symmetry enhancement by Wilson lines in QFT with twisted compactification in extra dimensions. We illustrate this in the field contents taken from heterotic supergravity in arbitrary dimensions toroidally compactified.
Using the equivalence between Scherk-Schwarz reductions and twisted tori compactifications, we discuss the effective theories obtained by this procedure from M-theory and N =4 type II orientifold constructions with Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond-Ramond form fluxes turned on. We derive the gauge algebras of the effective theories describing their general features, in particular the symplectic embedding in the duality symmetries of the theory. The generic gauge theory is non-abelian and its gauge group is given by the semidirect product of subgroups of SL(7) or SL(p-3) x SL(9-p) for p=3,...,9, with ge…
Global aspects of Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction are discussed and it is shown that it can usually be viewed as arising from a compactification on the compact space obtained by identifying a (possibly non-compact) group manifold G under a discrete subgroup Gamma, followed by a truncation. This allows a generalisation of Scherk-Schwarz reductions to string theory or M-theory as compactifications on G/Gamma, but only in those cases in which there is a suitable discrete subgroup of G. We analyse such compactifications with flux and investigate the gauge symmetry and its spontaneous breaking…
We find the bosonic sector of the gauged supergravities that are obtained from 11-dimensional supergravity by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction with flux to any dimension D. We show that, if certain obstructions are absent, the Scherk-Schwarz ansatz for a finite set of D-dimensional fields can be extended to a full compactification of M-theory, including an infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein fields. The internal space is obtained from a group manifold (which may be non-compact) by a discrete identification. We discuss the symmetry algebra and the symmetry breaking patterns and illustrate these …
In this review articel we study the gaugings of extended supergravity theories in various space-time dimensions. These theories describe the low-energy limit of non-trivial string compactifications. For each theory under consideration we review all possible gaugings that are compatible with supersymmetry. They are parameterized by the so-called embedding tensor which is a group theoretical object that has to satisfy certain representation constraints. This embedding tensor determines all couplings in the gauged theory that are necessary to preserve gauge invariance and supersymmetry. The conce…
In arXiv:0902.4032 [hep-th] an O(D,D)-covariant sigma model describing the embedding of a closed world-sheet into the 2D-dimensional twisted torus was proposed. Such sigma models provide a universal description of string theory with target spaces related by the action of T-duality. In this article a six-dimensional toy example is studied in detail. Different polarisations of the six-dimensional target space give different three-dimensional string backgrounds including a nilmanifold with H-flux, a T-fold with R-flux and a new class of T-folds. Global issues and connections with the doubled toru…
In this paper, we explore the interplay between symmetry and fracton order, motivated by the analogous close relationship for topologically ordered systems. Specifically, we consider models with 3D planar subsystem symmetry, and show that these can realize subsystem symmetry protected topological phases with gapless boundary modes. Gauging the planar subsystem symmetry leads to a fracton order in which particles restricted to move along lines exhibit a new type of statistical interaction that is specific to the lattice geometry. We show that both the gapless boundary modes of the ungauged theo…
We describe a simple class of type IIA string compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds where background fluxes generate a potential for the complex structure moduli, the dilaton, and the Kähler moduli. This class of models corresponds to gauged N=2 supergravities, and the potential is completely determined by a choice of gauging and by data of the N=2 Calabi-Yau model - the prepotential for vector multiplets and the quaternionic metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space. Using mirror symmetry, one can determine many (though not all) of the quantum corrections which are relevant in these model…
We construct families of supersymmetric AdS$_3\times Y_7$ and AdS$_3\times Y_8$ solutions to type IIB string theory and M-theory, respectively. Here $Y_7$ is an $S^5$ fibration over $Σ$, while $Y_8$ is an $S^4$ fibration over $Σ_g\times Σ$, where $Σ_g$ is a Riemann surface of genus $g>1$ and $Σ$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. We interpret the solutions as near-horizon limits of $N$ D3-branes wrapped on $Σ$ and $N$ M5-branes wrapped on $Σ_g\times Σ$, respectively. These are holographically dual to $d=2$, $(0,2)$ SCFTs, and we show that the central charge and superconformal R-…
In this paper we study the general conditions that have to be met for a gauged extension of a two-dimensional bosonic sigma-model to exist. In an inversion of the usual approach of identifying a global symmetry and then promoting it to a local one, we focus directly on the gauge symmetries of the theory. This allows for action functionals which are gauge invariant for rather general background fields in the sense that their invariance conditions are milder than the usual case. In particular, the vector fields that control the gauging need not be Killing. The relaxation of isometry for the back…
Exploiting the fact that Kaluza-Klein monopoles and the associated generalized orbifold planes are sources for geometrical fluxes, omega, we show that the standard constraint omega.omega=0, valid for superstring compactifications on twisted tori, can be consistently relaxed. This leads to novel possibilities for constructing superstring models with fluxes and localized sources, as well as for stabilizing moduli. This also explains the ten-dimensional origin of a family of N=4 gauged supergravities, whose interpretation in type-IIA orientifold compactifications was lacking.
We study 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with arbitrary twists. The theories obtained after compactification, often referred to as 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, can be viewed as starting points for RG flows to 5d SCFTs. According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs can be obtained in this fashion. We compute the Coulomb branch prepotential for all 5d KK theories obtainable in this manner and associate to these theories a smooth local genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold in which is encoded information about all possible RG flows to 5d SCFTs. These Calabi-Yau thre…
We study supersymmetric $AdS_4\times Σ_2$ and $AdS_3\times Σ_3$ solutions in half-maximal gauged supergravity in six dimensions with $SU(2)_R\times SU(2)$ gauge group. The gauged supergravity is obtained by coupling three vector multiplets to the pure $F(4)$ gauged supergravity. The $SU(2)_R$ R-symmetry together with the $SO(3)\sim SU(2)$ symmetry of the vector multiplets are gauged. The resulting gauged supergravity admits supersymmetric $AdS_6$ critical points with $SO(4)\sim SU(2)\times SU(2)$ and $SO(3)\sim SU(2)_{\textrm{diag}}$ symmetries. The former corresponds to five-dimensional $N=2$…
We present the supersymmetric completion of the M-theory free differential algebra resulting from a compactification to four dimensions on a twisted seven-torus with 4-form and 7-form fluxes turned on. The super--curvatures are given and the local supersymmetry transformations derived. Dual formulations of the theory are discussed in connection with classes of gaugings corresponding to diverse choices of vacua. This also includes seven dimensional compactifications on more general spaces not described by group manifolds.
We derive the effective N=1, D=4 supergravity for the seven main moduli of type IIA orientifolds with D6 branes, compactified on T^6/(Z_2xZ_2) in the presence of general fluxes. We illustrate and apply a general method that relates the N=1 effective Kahler potential and superpotential to a consistent truncation of gauged N=4 supergravity. We identify the correspondence between various admissible fluxes, N=4 gaugings and N=1 superpotential terms. We construct explicit examples with different features: in particular, new IIA no-scale models and a model which admits a supersymmetric AdS_4 vacuum …
We study half-twisted linear sigma models relevant to (0,2) compactifications of the heterotic string. Focusing on theories with a (2,2) locus, we examine the linear model parameter space and the dependence of genus zero half-twisted correlators on these parameters. We show that in a class of theories the correlators and parameters separate into A and B types, present techniques to compute the dependence, and apply these to some examples. These results should bear on the mathematics of (0,2) mirror symmetry and the physics of the moduli space and Yukawa couplings in heterotic compactifications…
We study the low-energy limit of a compactification of N=4 U(n) super Yang-Mills theory on $S^1$ with boundary conditions modified by an S-duality and R-symmetry twist. This theory has N=6 supersymmetry in 2+1D. We analyze the $T^2$ compactification of this 2+1D theory by identifying a dual weakly coupled type-IIA background. The Hilbert space of normalizable ground states is finite-dimensional and appears to exhibit a rich structure of sectors. We identify most of them with Hilbert spaces of Chern-Simons theory (with appropriate gauge groups and levels). We also discuss a realization of a rel…
Oscillating moduli fields can support a cosmological scaling solution in the presence of a perfect fluid when the scalar field potential satisfies appropriate conditions. We examine when such conditions arise in higher-dimensional, non-linear sigma-models that are reduced to four dimensions under a generalized Scherk-Schwarz compactification. We show explicitly that scaling behaviour is possible when the higher-dimensional action exhibits a global SL(n,R) or O(2,2) symmetry. These underlying symmetries can be exploited to generate non-trivial scaling solutions when the moduli fields have non-c…
We evaluate the low energy gravitational couplings, $F_g$ in the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ string theory compactified on orbifolds of $K3\times T^2$ by $g'$ which acts as a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ automorphisim on $K3$ together with a $1/N$ shift along $T^2$. The orbifold $g'$ corresponds to the conjugacy classes of the Mathieu group $M_{24}$. The holomorphic piece of $F_g$ is given in terms of a polylogarithim with index $3-2g$ and predicts the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants in the corresponding dual type II Calabi-Yau compactifications. We show that low lying Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for each of these co…
We study supersymmetric $AdS_n\times Σ^{7-n}$, $n=2,3,4,5$ solutions in seven-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity with $CSO(p,q,5-p-q)$ and $CSO(p,q,4-p-q)$ gauge groups. These gauged supergravities are consistent truncations of eleven-dimensional supergravity and type IIB theory on $H^{p,q}\circ T^{5-p-q}$ and $H^{p,q}\circ T^{4-p-q}$, respectively. Apart from recovering the previously known $AdS_n\times Σ^{7-n}$ solutions in $SO(5)$ gauge group, we find novel classes of $AdS_5\times S^2$, $AdS_3\times S^2\times Σ^2$ and $AdS_3\times CP^2$ solutions in non-compact $SO(3,2)$ gauge group to…
In this work we study the generalization of twisted homology to geometric and non-geometric backgrounds. In the process we describe the necessary conditions to wrap a network of D-branes on twisted cycles. If the cycle is localized in time, we show how by an instantonic brane mediation, some D-branes transform into fluxes on different backgrounds including non-geometric fluxes. As a consequence, we show that in the case of a IIB six-dimensional torus compactification on a simple orientifold, the flux superpotential is not invariant by this brane-flux transition, allowing the connection among d…
We study the compactification of the $(2,0)$ and type-II little-string theories on $S^1$, $T^2$ and $T^3$ with an R-symmetry twist that preserves half the supersymmetry. We argue that it produces the same moduli spaces of vacua as compactification of the $(1,0)$ theory with $E_8$ Wilson lines given by a maximal embedding of SU(2). In certain limits, this reproduces the moduli space of SU(2) with a massive adjoint hyper-multiplet. In the type-II little-string theory case, we observe a peculiar phase transition where the strings condense. We conjecture a generalization to more than two 5-branes …
The FDA algebras emerging from twisted tori compactifications of M-theory with fluxes are discussed within the general classification scheme provided by Sullivan's theorems and by Chevalley cohomology. It is shown that the generalized Maurer Cartan equations which have appeared in the literature, in spite of their complicated appearance, once suitably decoded within cohomology, lead to trivial FDA.s, all new p--form generators being contractible when the 4--form flux is cohomologically trivial. Non trivial D=4 FDA.s can emerge from non trivial fluxes but only if the cohomology class of the flu…
Compactifications of M-theory to two dimensional space-time on ${(K3\times \T^5)}/ \Z_2$ and ${(K3\times K3\times §^1)}/ \Z_2$ orientifolds are presented. These orientifolds provide examples of anomaly free chiral supergravity models in two dimensions with (8, 0) and (4, 0) supersymmetries. Anomaly free spectra at the enhanced symmetry points are also obtained. The results confirm the twisted sector contribution to the spectrum in the case of $\T^9/ \Z_2$ discussed earlier.
In this thesis we will discuss various aspects of noncommutative geometry and compactified Little-String theories. First we will give an introduction to the use of noncommutative geometry in string theory. Thereafter we will present a proof of the connection between D-brane dynamics and noncommutative geometry. Then we will explain the concept of instantons in noncommutative gauge theories. The last chapters shift the focus to Little-String- and $(2,0)$-theories. We study compactifications of these theories on tori with twists. First we study the case of two coinciding branes in detail. Afterw…
We derive the four point correlation function involving four twist fields for arbitrary even dimensional Z_N x Z_M orbifold compactifications. Using techniques from the conformal field theory the three point correlation functions with twist fields are determined. Both the choice of the modular background (compatible with the twists) and of the (higher) twisted sectors involved are fully general. Our results turn out to be target space duality invariant.
We consider a toroidal extra-dimensional space with shape moduli $θ$ which is the angle between the two large extra dimensions $R_1$ and $R_2$ (twisted LED with $δ=2$). The Kaluza-Klein (KK) compactification results in a tower of KK bulk neutrinos which are sterile in nature and couple to the active neutrinos in the brane. The active-sterile mixing probability strongly depends on the angle $θ$ due to changing pattern of KK mass gaps which leads to level crossing. Considering only the first two lowest KK states in analogy with $(3+2)$ model, it is shown that $|U_{α4}| > |U_{α5}|$ when $θ= π/2$ …
The moduli space of N=1 type II warped compactions to flat space with generic internal fluxes is studied. Using the underlying integrable generalized complex structure that characterizes these vacua, the different deformations are classified by H-twisted generalized cohomologies and identified with chiral and linear multiplets of the effective four-dimensional theory. The Kaehler potential for chiral fields corresponding to classically flat moduli is discussed. As an application of the general results, type IIB warped Calabi-Yau compactifications and other SU(3)-structure subcases are consider…
We present three infinite families of supersymmetric Type IIB backgrounds with AdS$_4$, AdS$_3$ and AdS$_2$ factors, dual to SCFTs in $3$, $2$ and $1$ space-time dimensions respectively. These field theories emerge at low energies, after a twisted compactification of a family of five dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ SCFTs on hyperbolic spaces. The holographic flows across dimensions are explicitly computed. We also discuss a family of SUSY breaking backgrounds, dual to a QCD-like quiver with massive (bi)fundamental matter. Some field theoretical observables are computed for these theories at the fixed…
We consider the cosmological role of the scalar fields generated by the compactification of 11-dimensional Einstein gravity on a 7D elliptic twisted torus, which has the attractive features of giving rise to a positive semi-definite potential, and partially fixing the moduli. This compactification is therefore relevant for low energy M-theory, 11D supergravity. We find that slow-roll inflation with the moduli is not possible, but that there is a novel scaling solution in Friedmann cosmologies in which the massive moduli oscillate but maintain a constant energy density relative to the backgroun…
We study ${\cal N}=2$ compactifications of $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string theory on orbifolds of $K3 \times T^2$ by $g'$ which acts as an $\mathbb{Z}_N$ automorphism of $K3$ together with a$1/N$ shift on a circle of $T^2$. The orbifold action $g'$ corresponds to the $26$ conjugacy classes of the Mathieu group $M_{24}$. We show that for the standard embedding the new supersymmetric index for these compactifications can always be decomposed into the elliptic genus of $K3$ twisted by $g'$. The difference in one-loop corrections to the gauge couplings are captured by automorphic forms obtained b…
Target space duality symmetries, which acts on Kähler and continuous Wilson line moduli, of a ${\bf Z}_N$ ($N\not=2$) 2-dimensional subspace of the moduli space of orbifold compactification are modified to include twisted moduli. These spaces described by the cosets $SU(n,1)\over SU(n)\times U(1)$ are $special$ Kähler, a fact which is exploited in deriving the extension of tree level duality transformation to include higher orders of the twisted moduli. Also, restrictions on these higher order terms are derived.
We describe a new class of supersymmetric string compactifications to 4d Minkowski space. These solutions involve type II strings propagating on (orientifolds of) non Calabi-Yau spaces in the presence of background NS and RR fluxes. The simplest examples have descriptions as cosets, generalizing the three-dimensional nilmanifold. They can also be thought of as twisted tori. We derive a formula for the (super)potential governing the light fields, which is generated by the fluxes and certain ``twists'' in the geometry. Detailed consideration of an example also gives strong evidence that in some …
We study N=1 Minkowski vacua in compactifications of type II string theory in the language of exceptional generalized geometry (EGG). We find the differential equations governing the EGG analogues of the pure spinors of generalized complex geometry, namely the structures which parameterize the vector and hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the effective four-dimensional N=2 supergravity obtained after compactification. In order to do so, we identify a twisted differential operator that contains NS and RR fluxes and transforms covariantly under the U-duality group, E7(7). We show that the condition…
We study supersymmetric compactification to four dimensions with non-zero H-flux in heterotic string theory. The background metric is generically conformally balanced and can be conformally Kahler if the primitive part of the H-flux vanishes. Analyzing the linearized variational equations, we write down necessary conditions for the existence of moduli associated with the metric. In a heterotic model that is dual to a IIB compactification on an orientifold, we find the metric moduli in a fixed H-flux background via duality and check that they satisfy the required conditions. We also discuss exp…
We investigate the phase structure of the compactified $2$-dimensional nonlinear $SU(3)/U(1)^2$ flag sigma model with respect to two $θ$-terms. Based on the circle compactification with the ${\mathbb Z}_{3}$-twisted boundary condition, which preserves an 't Hooft anomaly of the original uncompactified theory, we perform the semiclassical analysis based on the dilute instanton gas approximation (DIGA). We clarify classical vacua of the theory and derive fractional instanton solutions connecting these vacua. The resulting phase structure based on DIGA exhibits the quantum phase transitions and t…
