Einstein's Theory of General Relativity was formulated as a gauge theory of Lorentz symmetry by Utiyama in 1956, while the Einstein-Cartan gravitational theory was formulated by Kibble in 1961 as the gauge theory of Poincare transformations. In a noncommutative space-time with canonical commutation relations between the coordintes, Lorentz symmetry is violated and field theories constructed on such space-times have instead the so-called twisted Poincare invariance. In this paper a gauge theory formulation of noncommutative gravity is proposed based on the twisted Poincare symmetry together with the requirement of covariance under the general coordinate transformations, an essential ingredient of the theory of general relativity. The advantages of such a formulation as well as the related problems are discussed and possible ways out are outlined.
We construct a new model for relativistic particle on the noncommutative surface in $(2+1)$ dimensions, using the symplectic formalism of constrained systems and embedding the model on an extended phase space. We suggest a short cut to construct the gauged Lagrangian, using the Poisson algebra of constraints, without calculating the whole procedure of symplectic formalism. We also propose an approach for the systems, in which the symplectic formalism is not applicable, due to truncation of secondary constraints appearing at the first level. After gauging the model, we obtained generators of ga…
We show that flavor 't Hooft anomalies automatically vanish in noncommutative field theories which are obtained from string theory in the decoupling limit. We claim that this is because the flavor symmetries are secretly local, because of coupling to closed string bulk modes. An example is the SU(4) R-symmetry of N=4 D=4 NCSYM. The gauge fields, along with all closed string bulk modes, are not on-shell external states but do appear as off-shell intermediate states in non-planar processes; these closed string modes are thereby holographically encoded in the NCFT.
We point out that a field ϕcharged under a global U(1) symmetry generally allows for a starred localized extension with the transformation rule, ϕ\to U_L\starϕ\star U_R^{-1}. This results in a double gauging of the global U(1) symmetry on noncommutative space. We interpret the gauge theory so obtained in terms of the gauge fields that in the commutative limit appear naturally and are respectively the gauge field responsible for the charge and a decoupled vector field. The interactions are shown to be very different from those obtained by assigning a transformation rule of ϕ\to U\starϕor ϕ\star…
Using the theory of noncommutative geometry in a braided monoidal category, we improve upon a previous construction of noncommutative families of instantons of arbitrary charge on the deformed sphere S^4_θ. We formulate a notion of noncommutative parameter spaces for families of instantons and we explore what it means for such families to be gauge equivalent, as well as showing how to remove gauge parameters using a noncommutative quotient construction. Although the parameter spaces are a priori noncommutative, we show that one may always recover a classical parameter space by making an approp…
Massive vector fields can be described in a gauge invariant way with the introduction of compensating fields. In the unitary gauge one recovers the original formulation. Although this gauging mechanism can be extended to noncommutative spaces in a straightforward way, non trivial aspects show up when we consider the Seiberg-Witten map. As we show here, only a particular class of its solutions leads to an action that admits the unitary gauge fixing.
Starting from a standard noncommutative gauge theory and using the Seiberg-Witten map we propose a new version of a noncommutative gravity. We use consistent deformation theory starting from a free gauge action and gauging a killing symmetry of the background metric to construct a deformation of the gauge theory that we can relate with gravity. The result of this consistent deformation of the gauge theory is nonpolynomial in A_μ. From here we can construct a version of noncommutative gravity that is simpler than previous attempts. Our proposal is consistent and is not plagued with the problems…
A deformation of Einstein Gravity is constructed based on gauging the noncommutative ISO(3,1) group using the Seiberg-Witten map. The transformation of the star product under diffeomorphism is given, and the action is determined to second order in the deformation parameter.
A thorough analysis of Galilean symmetries for the gravitational well problem on a noncommutative plane is presented. A complete closure of the one-parameter centrally extended Galilean algebra is realised for the model. This implies that the field theoretic model constructed to describe noncommutative gravitational quantum well in \cite{ani} is indeed independent of the coordinate choice. Hence the energy spectrum predicted by the model can be associated with the experimental results to establish the upper-bound on time-space noncommutative parameter. Interestingly, noncommutativity is shown …
For internal gauge forces, the result of locally gauging, i.e., of performing the substitution $\partial \rightarrow D$, is physically the same whether performed on the action or on the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations of motion. Rather unsettling, though, such commutativity fails for the standard way of coupling a Dirac fermion to the gravitational field in the setting of a local Lorentz gauge theory of general relativity in the vierbein formalism, the equivalence principle thus seemingly being here violated. This paper will present a formalism in which commutativity holds for the gravi…
The Maxwell extension of the conformal algebra is presented. With the help of gauging the Maxwell-conformal group, a conformally invariant theory of gravity is constructed. In contrast to the conventional conformally invariant actions, our gravitational action contains the Einstein-Hilbert term without introducing any additional (compensator) scalar field to satisfy the local scale invariance. This is achieved by using the curvatures of the algebra. In a special condition, we show that the resulting action is reduced to the Brans-Dicke like theory of gravity. We subsequently find the generaliz…
We introduce a matrix model for noncommutative gravity, based on the gauge group $U(2) \otimes U(2)$. The vierbein is encoded in a matrix $Y_μ$, having values in the coset space $U(4)/ (U(2) \otimes U(2))$, while the spin connection is encoded in a matrix $X_μ$, having values in $U(2) \otimes U(2)$. We show how to recover the Einstein equations from the $θ\to 0$ limit of the matrix model equations of motion. We stress the necessity of a metric tensor, which is a covariant representation of the gauge group in order to set up a consistent second order formalism. We finally define noncommutative …
We construct a class of exact solutions of the noncommutative vacuum Einstein field equations, which are noncommutative analogues of the plane-fronted gravitational waves in classical gravity.
Gravitational collapse of a class of spherically symmetric stars are investigated. We quantise the geometries describing the gravitational collapse by a deformation quantisation procedure. This gives rise to noncommutative spacetimes with gravitational collapse.
There exist instances of dynamical systems possessing symmetry transformations of which the conserved Noether charges generating these symmetries feature an explicit time dependence in their functional representation over phase space. The generators of such symmetries certainly do not commute with the Hamiltonian, and yet these charges are conserved observables for the classical and quantised dynamics. Furthermore within the Hamiltonian formalism and in the case of global symmetries such charges may be gauged to allow for arbitrary time dependent symmetry transformations, simply by extending t…
The Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR) noncommutative (NC) formalism is propose in a curved space-time. In DFR approach, the NC parameter is promoted to the set of coordinates of the space-time. As consequence, the field theory defined on this space contains extra dimensions. We propose a metric containing the new coordinates to explain the length measurements of this extended space. We promote the Minkowski part of this extended metric to a metric defined in a curved manifold. Thus, we can build up a NC gravitation model with extra-dimensions. Based on the curved metric, we propose an E…
Following the formalism of enveloping algebras and star product calculus we formulate and analyze a model of gauge gravity on noncommutative spaces and examine the conditions of its equivalence to general relativity. The corresponding Seiberg-Witten maps are established which allow the definition of respective dynamics for a finite number of gravitational gauge field components on noncommutative spaces.
We demonstrate, by analogy with electromagnetism, that the geometric content in the theory of gravity is an indirect consequence of the fact that the gauge group in question is the Lorentz group SO(1,3). We hence construct field equations for gravity and a spin-1/2 particle in a gravitational field based on gauge considerations. Furthermore, we derive the weak field and Schroedinger limits of the Dirac equation of the particle in the gravitational field, especially in Fermi normal coordinates and on the equatorial plane of the Kerr geometry, following which we identify the terms to which the e…
Gauging of space translations for nonrelativistic point particles in one dimension leads to general coordinate transformations with fixed Newtonian time. The minimal gauge invariant extension of the particle velocity requires the introduction of two gauge fields whose minimal self interaction leads to a Maxwellian term in the Lagrangean. No dilaton field is introduced. We fix the gauge such that the residual symmetry group is the Galilei group. In case of a line the two-particle reduced Lagrangean describes the motion in a Newtonian gravitational potential with strength proportional to the ene…
We consider the complex, massive Klein-Gordon field living in the noncommutative space, and coupled to noncommutative electromagnetic fields. After employing the Seiberg-Witten map to first order, we analyze the noncommutative Klein-Gordon theory as $ c $, the velocity of light, goes to infinity. We show that the theory exhibits a regular "magnetic" limit only for certain forms of magnetic fields. The resulting theory is nothing but the Schrödinger theory in a gravitational background generated by the gauge fields.
We generalize the connection between 2t physics and noncommutative geometry. In particular, we apply our formalism to a target spacetime of signature (2+2). Specifically, we compute an algebra of a generalized SL(2, R)-Hamiltonian constraint, showing that it satisfies a kind of algebra associated with the noncommutative group $U_{\star}(1,1)$. We also comment about a possible connection between our formalism and nonsymmetric gravitational theory.
Actions for noncommutative (NC) gauge field theories can be expanded perturbatively in powers of the noncommutativity parameter $θ$ using the Seiberg-Witten map between ordinary classical fields and their NC counterparts. The leading order term represents classical ($θ=0$) action while higher-order terms give us $θ$-dependent NC corrections that ought to capture some aspects of quantum gravity. Building on previous work of Aschieri and Castellani on NC Chern-Simons (CS) gauge and gravity theories, showing that non-trivial $θ$-dependence exists only for spacetime dimensions $D\geq 5$, we invest…
The gauge connections corresponding to electromagnetism, Yang-Mills theory and Einstein gravity can be derived by assuming specific commutation relations between the phase-space variables of a first quantized theory. Extending the procedure to noncommuting coordinates leads to new types of dynamics, which are explored. In particular, the conditions for the coexistence of an electromagnetic background and a noncommutative two-from are found, as well as a generalized mechanism of dimensional reduction. The noncommutative deformation of a gravitational background is also constructed. The present …
A model, based on a noncommutative geometry, unifying general relativity with quantum mechanics, is further develped. It is shown that the dynamics in this model can be described in terms of one-parameter groups of random operators. It is striking that the noncommutative counterparts of the concept of state and that of probability measure coincide. We also demonstrate that the equation describing noncommutative dynamics in the quantum gravitational approximation gives the standard unitary evolution of observables, and in the "space-time limit" it leads to the state vector reduction. The cases …
We solve (2+1) noncommutative gravity coupled to point-like sources. We find continuity with Einstein gravity since we recover the classical gravitational field in the $θ\to 0$ limit or at large distance from the source. It appears a limitation on the mass which is twice than expected. Since the distance is not gauge invariant, the measure of the deficit angle near the source is intrinsically ambiguous, with the gauge group playing the role of statistical ensemble. Einstein determinism can be recovered only at large distance from the source, compared with the scale of the noncommutative parame…
We outline the the geometry of locally anisotropic (la) superspaces and la-supergravity. The approach is backgrounded on the method of anholonomic superframes with associated nonlinear connection structure. Following the formalism of enveloping algebras and star product calculus we propose a model of gauge la-gravity on noncommutative spaces. The corresponding Seiberg-Witten maps are established which allow the definition of dynamics for a finite number of gravitational gauge field components on noncommutative spaces.
Nonlinearly realized Abelian global symmetries can be reformulated as local shift symmetries gauged by three-form gauge fields. The anomalous symmetries of the Standard Model (such as Peccei-Quinn or $B+L$) can be dualized to local symmetries gauged by the Chern-Simons three-forms of the Standard Model gauge group. In this description the strong CP problem can be reformulated as the problem of a massless three-form field in QCD, which creates an arbitrary CP-violating constant four-form electric field in the vacuum. Both the axion as well as the massless quark solutions amount to simply Higgsi…
We study coupling of noncommutative gauge theories on branes to closed string in the bulk. We derive an expression for the gauge theory operator dual to the bulk graviton, both in bosonic string theory and superstring theory. In either case, we find that the coupling is different from what was expected in the literature when the graviton is polarized in the noncommutative directions. In the case of superstring, the expression for the energy-momentum tensor is consistent with the way the bulk metric appears in the action for the noncommutative gauge theory. We also clarify some aspects of the c…
In the first part, we discuss the interplay between local scale invariance and metric-affine degrees of freedom from few distinct points of view. We argue, rather generally, that the gauging of Weyl symmetry is a natural byproduct of requiring that scale invariance is a symmetry of a gravitational theory that is based on a metric and on an independent affine structure degrees of freedom. In the second part, we compute the Nöther identities associated with all the gauge symmetries, including Weyl, Lorentz and diffeomorphisms invariances, for general actions with matter degrees of freedom, explo…
We define a theory of noncommutative general relativity for canonical noncommutative spaces. We find a subclass of general coordinate transformations acting on canonical noncommutative spacetimes to be volume-preserving transformations. Local Lorentz invariance is treated as a gauge theory with the spin connection field taken in the so(3,1) enveloping algebra. The resulting theory appears to be a noncommutative extension of the unimodular theory of gravitation. We compute the leading order noncommutative correction to the action and derive the noncommutative correction to the equations of moti…
Quantum and noncommutative corrections to the Newtonian law of inertia are considered in the general setting of Verlinde's entropic force postulate. We demonstrate that the form for the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) emerges in a classical setting by seeking appropriate corrections in the entropy. We estimate the correction term by using concrete coherent states in the standard and generalized versions of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Using Jackiw's direct and analytic method we compute the explicit wavefunctions for these states producing minimal length as well as minimal products. S…
We consider the extension of the general-linear and special-linear algebras by employing the Maxwell symmetry in $D$ space-time dimensions. We show how various Maxwell extensions of the ordinary space-time algebras can be obtained by a suitable contraction of generalized algebras. The extended Lie algebras could be useful in the construction of generalized gravity theories and the objects that couple to them. We also consider the gravitational dynamics of these algebras in the framework of the gauge theories of gravity. By adopting the symmetry-breaking mechanism of the Stelle-West model, we p…
We propose a new theory of gravitation on noncommutative space-time which is invariant under the general coordinate transformations, while the local Lorentz invariance is realized as twisted gauge symmetry. Our theory is remarkably simpler compared to the existing formulations of noncommutative gravity.
According to Yang \& Mills (1954), a {\it conserved} current and a related rigid (`global') symmetry lie at the foundations of gauge theory. When the rigid symmetry is extended to a {\it local} one, a so-called gauge symmetry, a new interaction emerges as gauge potential $A$; its field strength is $F\sim {\rm curl} A$. In gravity, the conservation of the energy-momentum current of matter and the rigid translation symmetry in the Minkowski space of special relativity lie at the foundations of a gravitational gauge theory. If the translation invariance is made local, a gravitational potential $\…
Deformed Reissner-Nordström, as well as Reissner-Nordström de Sitter, solutions are obtained in a noncommutative gauge theory of gravitation. The gauge potentials (tetrad fields) and the components of deformed metric are calculated to second order in the noncommutativity parameter. The solutions reduce to the deformed Schwarzschild ones when the electric charge of the gravitational source and the cosmological constant vanish. Corrections to the thermodynamical quantities of the corresponding black holes and to the radii of different horizons have been determined. All the independent invariants…
A deformed Schwarzschild solution in noncommutative gauge theory of gravitation is obtained. The gauge potentials (tetrad fields) are determined up to the second order in the noncommutativity parameters $Θ^{μν}$. A deformed real metric is defined and its components are obtained. The noncommutativity correction to the red shift test of General Relativity is calculated and it is concluded that the correction is too small to have observable effects. Implications of such a deformed Schwarzschild metric are also mentioned.
We study dimensional reductions of noncommutative electrodynamics on flat space which lead to gauge theories of gravitation. For a general class of such reductions, we show that the noncommutative gauge fields naturally yield a Weitzenbock geometry on spacetime and that the induced diffeomorphism invariant field theory can be made equivalent to a teleparallel formulation of gravity which macroscopically describes general relativity. The Planck length is determined in this setting by the Yang-Mills coupling constant and the noncommutativity scale. The effective field theory can also contain hig…
We show that the cosmological constant appears as a Lagrange multiplier if nature is described by a canonical noncommutative spacetime. It is thus an arbitrary parameter unrelated to the action and thus to vacuum fluctuations. The noncommutative algebra restricts general coordinate transformations to four-volume preserving noncommutative coordinate transformations. The noncommutative gravitational action is thus an unimodular noncommutative gravity. We show that spacetime noncommutativity provides a very natural justification to an unimodular gravity solution to the cosmological problem. We ob…
We review some aspects of the implementation of spacetime symmetries in noncommutative field theories, emphasizing their origin in string theory and how they may be used to construct theories of gravitation. The geometry of canonical noncommutative gauge transformations is analysed in detail and it is shown how noncommutative Yang-Mills theory can be related to a gravity theory. The construction of twisted spacetime symmetries and their role in constructing a noncommutative extension of general relativity is described. We also analyse certain generic features of noncommutative gauge theories o…
We show that Hermitian-Einstein metrics can be locally constructed by a map from (anti-)self-dual two-forms on Euclidean ${\mathbb R}^4$ to symmetric two-tensors introduced in "Gravitational instantons from gauge theory," H. S. Yang and M. Salizzoni, Phys. Rev. Lett. (2006) 201602, [hep-th/0512215]. This correspondence is valid not only for a commutative space but also for a noncommutative space. We choose $U(1)$ instantons on a noncommutative ${\mathbb C}^2$ as the self-dual two-form, from which we derive a family of Hermitian-Einstein metrics. We also discuss the condition when the metric be…
The complexified gauging of the de Sitter group gives a unified theory for the electroweak and gravitational interactions. The standard spectrum for the electroweak gauge bosons is recovered with the correct mass assignments, following a spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry imposed by the geometry. There is no conventional Higgs sector. New physics is predicted with gravity-induced electroweak processes (at the electroweak and at an intermediate scale of about $10^{10}Gev$) as well as with novel-type of effects (such as gravitational Aharonov-Bohm and violations of the Principle of equiv…
H. Weyl's proposal of 1918 for generalizing Riemannian geometry by local scale gauge (later called {\em Weyl geometry}) was motivated by mathematical, philosophical and physical considerations. It was the starting point of his unified field theory of electromagnetism and gravity. After getting disillusioned with this research program and after the rise of a convincing alternative for the gauge idea by translating it to the phase of wave functions and spinor fields in quantum mechanics, Weyl no longer considered the original scale gauge as physically relevant. About the middle of the last centu…
We study Finsler black holes induced from Einstein gravity as possible effects of quantum spacetime noncommutativity. Such Finsler models are defined by nonholonomic frames not on tangent bundles but on (pseudo) Riemannian manifolds being compatible with standard theories of physics. We focus on noncommutative deformations of Schwarzschild metrics into locally anisotropic stationary ones with spherical/rotoid symmetry. There are derived the conditions when black hole configurations can be extracted from two classes of exact solutions depending on noncommutative parameters. The first class of m…
In this thesis some systems with exotic symmetries, which are a peculiarity in 2+1 space-time dimensions, are studied. Coded in the exotic structure, there appear noncommutative coordinates and a phases structure. This kind of systems has attracted attention from different areas of physics independently. Among them, we can mention: theory of ray representations of Lie groups, anyon physics, some condensed matter systems, for instance the quantum Hall effect, planar gauge and gravitation theories, noncommutative field theory, noncommutative geometry, and noncommutative quantum mechanics. We foc…
