The Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR) noncommutative (NC) formalism is propose in a curved space-time. In DFR approach, the NC parameter is promoted to the set of coordinates of the space-time. As consequence, the field theory defined on this space contains extra dimensions. We propose a metric containing the new coordinates to explain the length measurements of this extended space. We promote the Minkowski part of this extended metric to a metric defined in a curved manifold. Thus, we can build up a NC gravitation model with extra-dimensions. Based on the curved metric, we propose an Einstein-Hilbert action to describe the NC gravitation model on the DFR space. We present the NC version for the gravitational field equations. The weak field approximation is considered in the field equations to obtain the wave equations for the graviton propagation on the DFR space.
This work is an effort in order to compose a pedestrian review of the recently elaborated Doplicher, Fredenhagen, Roberts and Amorim (DFRA) noncommutative (NC) space which is a minimal extension of the DFR space. In this DRFA space, the object of noncommutativity ($θ^{μν}$) is a variable of the NC system and has a canonical conjugate momentum. The DFRA formalism is constructed in an extended space-time with independent degrees of freedom associated with the object of noncommutativity $θ^{μν}$. A consistent algebra involving the enlarged set of canonical operators is described, which permits on…
Lorentz covariance is the fundamental principle of every relativistic field theory which insures consistent physical descriptions. Even if the space-time is noncommutative, field theories on it should keep Lorentz covariance. In this letter, it is shown that the field theory on noncommutative spacetime is Lorentz covariant if the noncommutativity emerges from the algebra of spacetime operators described by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts.
With the elements of the Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR) noncommutative formalism, we have constructed the standard electroweak model. To accomplish this task we have begun with the WM-product basis group of symmetry. We have introduced the spontaneous symmetry breaking and the hypercharge in DFR framework. The electroweak symmetry breaking was analyzed and the masses of the new bosons were computed.
Quantisation of Lorentz invariant scalar field theory in Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) space-time, a Lorentz invariant, non-commutative space-time is studied. Absence of a unique Lagrangian in non-commutative space-time necessitates us to use an approach to quantisation that is based on the equations of motion alone. Using this we derive the equal time commutation relation between Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts-Amorim (DFRA) scalar field and its conjugate, which has non-commutative dependent modifications, but the corresponding creation and annihilation operators obey usual algebra. We sh…
We discuss the perturbative approach a` la Dyson to a quantum field theory with nonlocal self-interaction :phi*...*phi:, according to Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR). In particular, we show that the Wick reduction of non locally time--ordered products of Wick monomials can be performed as usual, and we discuss a very simple Dyson diagram.
This is an exposition of joint work with S. Doplicher, K. Fredenhagen, and G. Piacitelli on field theory on the noncommutative Minkowski space. The limit of coinciding points is modified compared to ordinary field theory in a suitable way which allows for the definition of so-called regularized field monomials as interaction terms. Employing these in the Hamiltonian formalism results in an ultraviolet finite S-matrix.
In the present work we study dynamical space-time symmetries in noncommutative relativistic theories by using the minimal canonical extension of the Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts algebra. Our formalism is constructed in an extended space-time with independent degrees of freedom associated with the object of noncommutativity $θ^{μν}$. In this framework we consider theories that are invariant under the Poincaré group ${\cal P}$ or under its extension ${\cal P}'$, when translations in the extra dimensions are permitted. The Noether's formalism adapted to such extended $x+θ$ space-time is emp…
Present day physics rests on two main pillars: General relativity and quantum field theory. We discuss the deep and at the same time problematic interplay between these two theories. Based on an argument by Doplicher, Fredenhagen, and Roberts, we propose a possible universality property for noncommutative quantum field theory in the sense that any theory of quantum gravity should involve quantum field theories on noncommutative space-times as a special limit. We propose a mathematical framework to investigate such a universality property and start the discussion of its mathematical properties.…
After a brief review of recent rigorous results concerning the representation theory of rational chiral conformal field theories (RCQFTs) we focus on pairs (A,F) of conformal field theories, where F has a finite group G of global symmetries and A is the fixpoint theory. The comparison of the representation categories of A and F is strongly intertwined with various issues related to braided tensor categories. We explain that, given the representation category of A, the representation category of F can be computed (up to equivalence) by a purely categorical construction. The latter is of conside…
This is the written version of a talk I gave at the 35th Symposium Ahrenshoop in Berlin, Germany, August 2002. It is an exposition of joint work with S. Doplicher, K. Fredenhagen, and Gh. Piacitelli [1]. The violation of unitarity found in quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetimes in the context of the so-called modified Feynman rules is linked to the notion of time ordering implicitely used in the assumption that perturbation theory may be done in terms of Feynman propagators. Two alternative approaches which do not entail a violation of unitarity are sketched. An outlook upon our mor…
The Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) framework for noncommutative (NC) space-times is considered as an alternative approach to describe the physics of quantum gravity, for instance. In this formalism, the NC parameter, {\it i.e.} $θ^{μν}$, is promoted to a coordinate of a new extended space-time. Consequently, we have a field theory in a space-time with spatial extra-dimensions. This new coordinate has a canonical momentum associated, where the effects of a new physics can emerge in the fields propagation along the extra-dimension. In this paper we introduce the gauge invariance in the DFR …
The noncommutative (NC) framework elaborated by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR) has a Lorentz invariant spacetime structure in order to be considered as a candidate to understand the physics of the early Universe. In DFR formalism the NC parameter ($θ^{μν}$) is a coordinate operator in an extended Hilbert space and it has a conjugate momentum. Since $x$ and $θ^{μν}$ are independent coordinates, the Weyl-Moyal (WM) product can be used in this framework. With these elements, in this work, we have constructed the standard electroweak model. To accomplish this task we have begun with the …
In this paper, we derive the non-commutative corrections to the maximal acceleration in the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) space-time and show that the effect of the non-commutativity is to decrease the magnitude of the value of the maximal acceleration in the commutative limit. We also obtain an upper bound on the acceleration along the non-commutative coordinates using the positivity condition on the magnitude of the maximal acceleration in the commutative space-time. From the Newtonian limit of the geodesic equation and Einstein's equation for linearised gravity, we derive the explicit…
We construct two types of scalar field theory on Snyder space-time. The first one is based on the natural momenta addition inherent to the coset momentum space. This construction uncovers a non-associative deformation of the Poincaré symmetries. The second one considers Snyder space-time as a subspace of a larger non-commutative space. We discuss different possibilities to restrict the extra-dimensional scalar field theory to a theory living only on Sndyer space-time and present the consequences of these restrictions on the Poincaré symmetries. We show moreover how the non-associative approach…
The aim of the present paper is to present the construction of a general family of $C^*$-algebras that includes, as a special case, the "quantum space-time algebra" first introduced by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts. To this end, we first review, within the $C^*$-algebra context, the Weyl-Moyal quantization procedure on a fixed Poisson vector space (a vector space equipped with a given bivector, which may be degenerate). We then show how to extend this construction to a Poisson vector bundle over a general manifold $M$, giving rise to a $C^*$-algebra which is also a module over $C_0(M)$. A…

The so-called canonical noncommutativity is based on a constant noncommutative parameter ($θ$). However, this formalism breaks Lorentz invariance and one way to recover it is to define the NC parameter as a variable, an extra coordinate of the system. One approach that uses the variable $θ$ was developed by Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR) and hence, their phase-space is formed by $(x,p,θ)$ with extra-dimensions. In this work we have demonstrated precisely that this phase-space is incomplete because the variable $θ$ requires an associated momentum and the so-called DFR phase-space is i…
It is argued that the familiar algebra of the non-commutative space-time with $c$-number $θ^{μν}$ is inconsistent from a theoretical point of view. Consistent algebras are obtained by promoting $θ^{μν}$ to an anti-symmetric tensor operator ${\hatθ}^{μν}$. The simplest among them is Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) algebra in which the triple commutator among the coordinate operators is assumed to vanish. This allows us to define the Lorentz-covariant operator fields on the DFR algebra as operators diagonal in the 6-dimensional $θ$-space of the hermitian operators, ${\hatθ}^{μν}$. It is show…
A noncommutative space-time admitting dilation symmetry was briefly mentioned in the seminal work of Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts. In this paper we explicitly construct the model in details and carry out an in-depth analysis. The C*-algebra that describes this quantum space-time is determined, and it is shown that it admits an action by *-automorphisms of the dilation group, along with the expected Poincaré covariance. In order to study the main physical properties of this scale-covariant model, a free scalar neutral field is introduced as a investigation tool. Our key results are then t…
In this paper we investigated the causality problem present in the recent work about the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts-Amorim (DFRA) noncommutative framework which analyzed the complex scalar field. To accomplish this task we provided a brief review of the main ingredients of the problem and we demonstrated precisely that the DFRA algebra obeys the rules of the Canonical Commutation Relations algebra. This fact permitted us to prove the form of the DFRA operators previously constructed in the usual way. After that, we introduced the solution of its Klein-Gordon equation with a source term. Its…
We report on joint work, past and in progress, with K.Fredenhagen and with J.E,Roberts, on the quantum structure of spacetime in the small which is dictated by the principles of Quantum Mechanics and of General Relativity; we comment on how these principles point to a deep link between coordinates and fields. This is an expanded version of a lecture delivered at the 37th Karpacz School in Theoretical Physics, February 2001.
We introduced a new formulation for the path integral formalism for a noncommutative (NC) quantum mechanics defined in the recently developed Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts-Amorim (DFRA) NC framework that can be considered an alternative framework for the NC spacetime of the early Universe. The operators formalism was revisited and we apply its properties to obtain a NC transition amplitude representation. Two DFRA's systems were discussed, the NC free particle and NC harmonic oscillator. Some temperature concepts in this NC space are also considered. The extension to NC DFRA quantum field theo…
We obtained the Feynman propagators for a noncommutative (NC) quantum mechanics defined in the recently developed Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts-Amorim (DFRA) NC background that can be considered as an alternative framework for the NC spacetime of the early Universe. The operators formalism was revisited and we applied its properties to obtain a NC transition amplitude representation. Two examples of DFRA's systems were discussed, namely, the NC free particle and NC harmonic oscillator. The spectral representation of the propagator gave us the NC wave function and energy spectrum. We calculated…
We question the emergence of a minimal length in quantum spacetime, comparing two notions that appeared at various points in the literature: on the one side, the quantum length as the spectrum of an operator L in the Doplicher Fredenhagen Roberts (DFR) quantum spacetime, as well as in the canonical noncommutative spacetime; on the other side, Connes' spectral distance in noncommutative geometry. Although on the Euclidean space the two notions merge into the one of geodesic distance, they yield distinct results in the noncommutative framework. In particular on the Moyal plane, the quantum lengt…
In this work we have investigated some properties of classical phase-space with symplectic structures consistent, at the classical level, with two noncommutative (NC) algebras: the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts algebraic relations and the NC approach which uses an extended Hilbert space with rotational symmetry. This extended Hilbert space includes the operators $θ^{ij}$ and their conjugate momentum $π_{ij}$ operators. In this scenario, the equations of motion for all extended phase-space coordinates with their corresponding solutions were determined and a rotational invariant NC Newton's seco…
We discuss a formulation of quantum field theory on quantum space time where the perturbation expansion of the S-matrix is term by term ultraviolet finite. The characteristic feature of our approach is a quantum version of the Wick product at coinciding points: the differences of coordinates q_j - q_k are not set equal to zero, which would violate the commutation relation between their components. We show that the optimal degree of approximate coincidence can be defined by the evaluation of a conditional expectation which replaces each function of q_j - q_k by its expectation value in optimall…
The framework Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) of a noncommutative (NC) space-time is considered as a alternative approach to study the NC space-time of the early Universe. In this formalism, the parameter of noncommutative $θ^{μν}$ is promoted to a coordinate of the space-time, and consequently, we are describing a field theory in a space-time with extra-dimension. Consequently, there is a canonical momentum associated to this new coordinate in which the effects of a new physics can emerge in the propagation of the fields along the extra-dimension. The Fourier space of this framework is au…
The first part of this paper extends the Doplicher-Haag-Roberts theory of superselection sectors to quantum field theory on arbitrary globally hyperbolic spacetimes. The statistics of a superselection sector may be defined as in flat spacetime and each charge has a conjugate charge when the spacetime possesses non-compact Cauchy surfaces. In this case, the field net and the gauge group can be constructed as in Minkowski spacetime. The second part of this paper derives spin-statistics theorems on spacetimes with appropriate symmetries. Two situations are considered: First, if the spacetime has …
