Two dimensional (2D) layered transition-metal-based tellurides (chalcogens) are known to harness their surface atoms characteristics to enhance topographical activities for energy conversion, storage, and magnetic applications. High surface energy due to unsaturated dangling bonds and larger lateral size than the thickness (volume) makes them a potential candidate for emerging electronics. Nevertheless, the gradual stacking of each sheet alters the surface atoms' subtle features, such as lattice expansion, leading to several phenomena and rendering tunable properties. In the present work, we have monitored thickness-dependent properties of the 2D CoTe2 sheets from nanoscale mechanics, tribology, surface potential distributions, interfacial interaction and magnetism using atomically resolved spectroscopy and different surface probe techniques, in conjunction with theoretical investigations: density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD). The variation in properties observed in theoretical investigation unleashes the crucial role of crystal planes of the CoTe2. The presented results are beneficial in expanding the use of 2D telluride family in flexible electronics, piezo sensors, tribo-generator, and next-generation memory devices.
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was found to be highly sensitive to the nominal thickness and morphology of laterally heterogeneous CoPd films in the vicinity of the metal insulator transition. We used the effect to tune the anisotropy by the width of lithographically patterned stripes with non-uniform cross-sectional thickness profiles. The phenomenon and the method can be suitable to control the local anisotropy of spintronic logic circuitry elements by their shape and lateral dimensions.
Spin transfer torque (STT) driven by a charge current plays a key role in magnetization switching in heavy-metal/ferromagnetic-metal structures. The STT efficiency defined by the ratio between the effective field due to STT and the current density, is required to be improved to reduce energy compulsions in the STT-based spintronic devices. In this work, using the harmonic Hall measurement method, we experimentally studied the STT efficiency in platinum(Pt)/FM structures as a function of the Pt thickness. We found that the STT efficiency strongly depends on the Pt thickness and reaches a maximu…
Metallic transition-metal oxides undergo a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) as the film thickness decreases across a ritical thickness of several monolayers (MLs), but its driving mechanism remains controversial. We have studied the thickness-dependent MIT of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. As the film thickness was decreased across the critical thickness of the MIT (6-8 ML), a gradual decrease of the ferromagnetic signals and a concomitant increase of paramagnetic signals were observed, while the Mn…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry exhibit a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect originating from the Berry curvature. To employ this large Hall current for room temperature topo-spintronics applications, it is necessary to fabricate these materials as thin or ultrathin films. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that Weyl semimetal Co2MnGa thin films (20-50 nm) show a very large anomalous Hall angle ~11.4% at low temperature and ~9.7% at room temperature, which can be ascribed to the nontrivial topology of the band structure with large intrinsic Berry c…
The ferromagnetic properties of epitaxial La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ thin films have been studied. The magnetic transition is affected by both strain and finite thickness. We have used a series of films of different thickness and on different substrates in order to quantitatively determine the change in Curie temperature contributed by each effect. The phase diagram of T$_C$ versus in-plane strain suggests that the ferromagnetic transition temperature is suppressed by tensile strain and enhanced by compressive strain. The general method of separating strain and finite thickness effects should…
Domains in BaTiO$_3$ induces a regular modulation of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in CoFeB via an inverse magnetostriction effect. As a result, the domain structures of the CoFeB wedge film and BaTiO$_3$ substrate correlate fully and straight ferroelectric domain boundaries in BaTiO$_3$ pin magnetic domain walls in CoFeB. We use x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy to characterize the spin structure of the pinned domain walls. In a rotating magnetic field, abrupt and reversible transitions between two domain wall types occur, namely, narrow walls w…
Amorphous/crystalline multilayer structures of Fe-P alloys were deposited electrochemically using the single bath technique. Hall-Petch behavior of microhardness with respect to sublayer thickness was observed down to a sublayer thickness of 15 nm. For thinner sublayers, a hardness plateau was obtained. The transition at a sublayer thickness of 15 nm coincides with the loss of the multilayer structure as observed in transmission electron microscopy. The transition is a possible result of a change in the amorphous to crystalline sublayer thickness ratio and the interface roughness development d…
Ultrafast two-color pump-probe measurements, involving coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, have provided information simultaneously on the mechanical properties and on the electronic structure of ferromagnetic GaMnAs. The elastic constant C11 of Ga1-xMnxAs (0.03<x<0.07) are observed to be systematically smaller than those of GaAs. Both C11 and Vs of GaMnAs are found to increase with temperature (78 K<T<295 K), again in contrast to the opposite behavior in GaAs. In addition, the fundamental bandgap (at E0 critical point) of Ga1-xMnxAs is found to shift slightly to higher energies with Mn conc…
We present the magnetotransport properties of very thin (5 to 15 nm) single (Ga,Mn)As layers grown by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy. A lower (Ga,Mn)As thickness limit of 5 nm for the ferromagnetic phase and the dependence of the Curie temperature on (Ga,Mn)As thickness are determined from electrical transport measurements. The Curie temperature is determined to be 97 K for the thinnest ferromagnetic sample and is found to decrease for increasing layer thickness. A carrier density of ~7.1$\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the 5 nm thick (Ga,Mn)As layer is determined from Hall measurements. …
Although pinning of domain walls in ferromagnets is ubiquitous, the absence of an appropriate characterization tool has limited the ability to correlate the physical and magnetic microstructures of ferromagnetic films with specific pinning mechanisms. Here, we show that the pinning of a magnetic vortex, the simplest possible domain structure in soft ferromagnets, is strongly correlated with surface roughness, and we make a quantitative comparison of the pinning energy and spatial range in films of various thickness. The results demonstrate that thickness fluctuations on the lateral length scal…
Standing spin waves in a thin film are used as sensitive probes of interface pinning induced by an antiferromagnet through exchange anisotropy. Using coplanar waveguide ferromagnetic resonance, pinning of the lowest energy spin wave thickness mode in Ni(80)Fe(20)/Ir(25)Mn(75) exchange biased bilayers was studied for a range of IrMn thicknesses. We show that pinning of the standing mode can be used to amplify, relative to the fundamental resonance, frequency shifts associated with exchange bias. The shifts provide a unique `fingerprint' of the exchange bias and can be interpreted in terms of an…
We discuss the influence of disorder on domain structure formation in ferromagnetic phase of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) of p-type. Using analytical arguments we show the existence of critical ratio $ν_{\rm {cr}}$ of concentration of charge carriers and magnetic ions such that sample critical thickness $L_{\rm{cr}}$ (such that at $L<L_{\rm{cr}}$ a sample is monodomain) diverges as $ν\to ν_{\rm {cr}}$. At $ν> ν_{\rm {cr}}$ the sample is monodomain. This feature makes DMS different from conventional ordered magnets as it gives a possibility to control the sample critical thickness and …
An extended Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation is introduced to describe the dynamics of inhomogeneous magnetization in a current-carrying wire. The coefficients of all the terms in this equation are calculated quantum-mechanically for a simple model which includes impurity scattering. This is done by comparing the energies and lifetimes of a spin wave calculated from the LLG equation and from the explicit model. Two terms are of particular importance since they describe non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque and damping processes which do not rely on spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that thes…
Spin-transfer ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) in symmetric magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with a varied thickness of the MgO tunnel barrier (0.75 nm < $t_{MgO}$ < 1.05 nm) is studied using the spin-torque diode effect. The application of an RF current into nanosized MTJs generates a DC mixing voltage across the device when the frequency is in resonance with the resistance oscillations arising from the spin transfer torque. Magnetization precession in the free and reference layers of the MTJs is analyzed by comparing ST-FMR signals with macrospin and micromagnetic simulations. From ST-FMR sp…
The spin-orbit torque, a torque induced by a charge current flowing through the heavy-metal conducting layer with strong spin-orbit interactions, provides an efficient way to control the magnetization direction in heavy-metal/ferromagnet nanostructures, required for applications in the emergent magnetic technologies like random access memories, high-frequency nano oscillators, or bio-inspired neuromorphic computations. We study the interface properties, magnetization dynamics, magnetostatic features and spin-orbit interactions within the multilayer system Ti(2)/Co(1)/Pt(0-4)/Co(1)/MgO(2)/Ti(2)…
We present room temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies of polycrystalline ||Pt/10 nm Cu/t Co/10 nm Cu/Pt|| films as a function of Co layer thickness (1 < t < 10 nm) grown by evaporation and magnetron sputtering. FMR was studied with a high frequency broadband coplanar waveguide (up to 25 GHz) using a flip-chip method. The resonance field and the linewidth were measured as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. The evaporated films exhibit a lower magnetization density (Ms = 1131 emu/cm^3) compared to the sputtered films (Ms= 1333 emu/cm^3), with practically equal perpendic…
We measure spin-orbit torque generated by exfoliated layers of the low-symmetry semi-metal ZrTe$_3$ using the spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) technique. When the ZrTe$_3$ has a thickness greater than about 10 nm, artifacts due to spin pumping and/or resonant heating can cause the standard ST-FMR analysis to overestimate the true magnitude of the torque efficiency by as much as a factor of 30, and to indicate incorrectly that the spin-orbit torque depends strongly on the ZrTe$_3$ layer thickness. Artifact-free measurements can still be achieved over a substantial thickness range by…
Charge resistance and spin torque are generated by coherent carrier transport through ferromagnetic 360 degree domain walls, although they follow qualitatively different trends than for 180 degree domain walls. The charge resistance of 360 degree domain walls reaches a maximum at an intermediate wall thickness, unlike 180 degree domain walls, whose resistance decreases monotonically with wall thickness. The peak amplitude of the spin torque and the optimal thickness of the domain wall to maximize torque for a 360 degree wall are more than twice as large as found for a 180 degree domain wall in…
Due to the strong lattice-property relationships which exist in complex oxide epitaxial layers, their electronic and magnetic properties can be modulated by structural distortions induced at the atomic scale. The modification and control can be affected at coherent heterointerfaces by epitaxial strain imposed by the substrate or by structural modifications to accommodate the film-substrate symmetry mismatch. Often these act in conjunction with a strong dependence on the layer thickness, especially for ultrathin layers. Moreover, as a result of these effects, the temperature dependence of the s…
In this research project we propose a new composite medium, which can visualise the mechanical stress at any stage: before and after damage. The main feature of the proposed stress-tuneable composite is its permittivity (dielectric constant), which depends on the mechanical stress. This kind of composite material can be characterised as a "sensing medium" that opens up new possibilities for remote monitoring of stress with the use of microwave transceiving techniques. The composite material can be made as a bulk medium or as thin cover to image the mechanical stress distribution inside constru…
We investigate the magnetization dynamics through the magnetoimpedance effect in ferromagnetic NiFe/Cu/Co films. We observe that the magnetoimpedance response is dependent on the thickness of the non-magnetic Cu spacer material, a fact associated to the kind of the magnetic interaction between the ferromagnetic layers. Thus, we present an experimental study on asymmetric magnetoimpedance in ferromagnetic films with biphase magnetic behavior and explore the possibility of tuning the linear region of the magnetoimpedance curves around zero magnetic field by varying the thickness of the non-magne…
We report a high-resolution experimental detection of the resonant behavior of magnetic vortices confined in small disk-shaped ferromagnetic dots. The samples are magnetically soft Fe-Ni disks of diameter 1.1 and 2.2 um, and thickness 20 and 40 nm patterned via electron beam lithography onto microwave co-planar waveguides. The vortex excitation spectra were probed by a vector network analyzer operating in reflection mode, which records the derivative of the real and the imaginary impedance as a function of frequency. The spectra show well-defined resonance peaks in magnetic fields smaller than…
Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferromagnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.
We present a detailed study of the ground-state magnetic structure of ultrathin Fe films on the surface of fcc Ir(001). We use the spin-cluster expansion technique in combination with the relativistic disordered local moment scheme to obtain parameters of spin models and then determine the favored magnetic structure of the system by means of a mean field approach and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. For the case of a single monolayer of Fe we find that layer relaxations very strongly influence the ground-state spin configurations, whereas Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and biquadr…
The mechanical behaviour and deformation mechanisms of magnetron-sputtered Zr/Nb nanoscale multilayers were analysed as a function of the periodicity (L = 10 and 75 nm) and annealing time at 350C (2-336 hrs). The strength of the as-deposited multilayers was independent of the layer thickness and it was controlled by the co-deformation of the Zr and Nb layers. Annealing led to transformation of the Zr layers into ZrO2 after a few hours, while the Nb layers oxidised at a much slower rate. The volumetric expansion associated with the oxidation led to the formation of cracks at the interfaces and …
We have studied the magnetic properties of (GaMnAs)m/(GaAs)n superlattices with magnetic GaMnAs layers of thickness between 8 and 16 molecular layers (ML) (23-45 Å), and with nonmagnetic GaAs spacers from 4 ML to 10 ML (11-28 Å). While previous reports state that GaMnAs layers thinner than 50 Åare paramagnetic in the whole Mn composition range achievable using MBE growth (up to 8% Mn), we have found that short period superlattices exhibit a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition with a transition temperature which depends on both the thickness of the magnetic GaMnAs layer and the nonma…
We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E…
A nonlinear magnetoresistance - called unidirectional spin-Hall magnetoresistance - is recently experimentally discovered in metallic bilayers consisting of a heavy metal and a ferromagnetic metal. To study the fundamental mechanism of the USMR, both ferromagnetic and heavy metallic layer thickness dependence of the USMR are presented in a Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer at room temperature. To avoid ambiguities, second harmonic Hall measurements are used for separating spin-Hall and thermal contributions to the non-linear magnetoresistance. The experimental results are fitted by using a drift-diffusion t…
A quantitative model describing large magnetostrain effect observed in several ferromagnetic shape memory alloys such as Ni2MnGa is briefly reported. The paper contains an exact thermodynamic consideration of the mechanical and magnetic properties for a similar type materials. As a result, the basic mechanical state equation including magnetic field effect is directly derived from a general Poisson's rule. It is shown that the magnetic field induced deformation effect is directly connected with the strain dependence of magnetization. A simple model of magnetization and its dependence on the str…
We report bcc-like crystal structures in 2-4 ML Fe films grown on fcc Cu(100) using scanning tunneling microscopy. The local bcc structure provides a straightforward explanation for their frequently reported outstanding magnetic properties, i.e., ferromagnetic ordering in all layers with a Curie temperature above 300 K. The non-pseudomorphic structure, which becomes pseudomorphic above 4 ML film thickness is unexpected in terms of conventional rules of thin film growth and stresses the importance of finite thickness effects in ferromagnetic ultrathin films.
The mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of Cu/Nb nanoscale metallic multilayers (NMMs) manufactured by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) are studied at 25C and 400C. Cu/Nb NMMs with individual layer thicknesses between 7 and 63 nm were tested by in-situ micropillar compression inside a scanning electron microscope Yield strength, strain-rate sensitivities and activation volumes were obtained from the pillar compression tests. The deformed micropillars were examined under scanning and transmission electron microscopy in order to examine the deformation mechanisms active for different…
The mechanical and electronic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers corresponding to transition groups IV, VI, and X are explored under mechanical bending from first principles calculations using the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA (MGGA). SCAN provides an accurate description of the phase stability of the TMD monolayers. Our calculated lattice parameters and other structural parameters agree well with experiment. We find that bending stiffness (or flexural rigidity) increases as the transition metal group goes from IV to X to VI, with the…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials-based field-effect transistors (FETs) are promising for ultimate scaled electron device applications because of the improved electrostatics to atomically thin body thickness. However, compared with the typical thickness of ~5-nm for Si-on-insulator (SOI), the advantage of the ultimate thickness limit of monolayer for the device performance has not been fully proved yet, especially for the on-state at the accumulation region. Here, we present much stronger quantum-mechanical effect at the accumulation region based on the C-V analysis for top-gate MoS2 FETs…
We report on the mechanical properties of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets, in high vacuum and as a function of time of exposure to atmospheric conditions [1]. BP flakes with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 30 nm suspended over circular holes are characterized by nanoindentations using an atomic force microscope tip. From measurements in high vacuum an elastic modulus of 46+/-10 GPa and breaking strength of 2.4+/-1 GPa are estimated. Both magnitudes are independent of the thickness of the flakes. Our results show that the exposure to air has substantial influence in the mechanical resp…
The structural and magnetic properties of a series of superlattices consisting of two ferromagnetic metals La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) grown on (001) oriented SrTiO$_3$ are studied. Superlattices with a fixed LSMO layer thickness of 20 unit cells (u.c.) and varying SRO layer thickness show a sudden drop in magnetization on cooling through temperature where both LSMO and SRO layers are ferromagnetic. This behavior suggests an antiferromagnetic coupling between the layers. In addition, the samples having thinner SRO layers (n \TEXTsymbol{<} 6) exhibit enhanced saturati…
A coplanar waveguide shorted in one end is proposed, designed, and implemented successfully to measure the properties of magnetic thin films as a part of the vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) spectroscopy set-up. Its simple structure, potential applications and easy installation inside the cryostat chamber made it advantageous especially for low-temperature measurements. It provides a wide band of frequencies in the gigahertz range essential for FMR measurements. Our spectroscopy set-up with short-circuited coplanar waveguide has been used to extract Gilbert damping coe…
We investigate the scaling behavior in the statistical properties of Barkhausen noise in ferromagnetic films. We apply the statistical treatment usually employed for bulk materials in experimental Barkhausen noise time series measured with the traditional inductive technique in polycrystalline ferromagnetic films having different thickness from 100 up to 1000 nm, and investigate the scaling exponents. Based on this procedure, we can group the samples in a single universality class, characterized by exponents τ\sim 1.5, α\sim 2.0, and 1/σνz \sim \vartheta \sim 2.0. We interpret these results in…
Extensive efforts have been devoted to the study of spin-orbit torque in ferromagnetic metal/heavy metal bilayers and exploitation of it for magnetization switching using an in-plane current. As the spin-orbit torque is inversely proportional to the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer, sizable effect has only been realized in bilayers with an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer. Here we demonstrate that, by stacking ultrathin Pt and FeMn alternately, both ferromagnetic properties and current induced spin-orbit torque can be achieved in FeMn/Pt multilayers without any constraint on its total thickne…
We studied the spin injection in a NiFe(Py)/Si system using broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The Gilbert damping parameter of the Py layer on top of the Si channel was determined as a function of the Si doping concentration and Py layer thickness. For fixed Py thickness we observed an increase of the Gilbert damping parameter with decreasing resistivity of the Si channel. For a fixed Si doping concentration we measured an increasing Gilbert damping parameter for decreasing Py layer thickness. No increase of the Gilbert damping parameter was found Py/Si samples with an insulating…
Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO3(001) substrates by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to non-magnetic around 3monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr eff…
We demonstrate anisotropic resistivity measurements using the extended van der Pauw (vdP) method in ferromagnetic Ni80Fe20 (Py) films. We apply it to measure anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and compare the results of the vdP method with the more conventional Hall-bar method along the hard and easy axis of the film and show that the vdP method gives more reliable AMR result. For instance, the AMR result along the hard and easy axis of the film are in close agreement. Further, we applied the vdP method to study AMR in a series of Py films with thicknesses ranging between 10-250 nm. The films…
The magnetic properties of thin-film multilayers [Fe/Py]/FeMn/Py are investigated as a function of temperature and thickness of the antiferromagnetic FeMn spacer using SQUID magnetometry. The observed behavior differs substantially for the structures with 6-nm and 15-nm FeMn spacers. While the 15-nm-FeMn structure exhibits exchange pinning of both ferromagnetic layers in the entire measurement temperature interval from 5 to 300 K, the 6-nm-FeMn structure becomes exchange de-pinned in the vicinity of room temperature. The de-pinned state is characterized by a single hysteresis loop centered aro…
We report on the first observation of a pronounced re-entrant superconductivity phenomenon in superconductor/ferromagnetic layered systems. The results were obtained using a superconductor/ferromagnetic-alloy bilayer of Nb/Cu(1-x)Ni(x). The superconducting transition temperature T_{c} drops sharply with increasing thickness d_{CuNi} of the ferromagnetic layer, until complete suppression of superconductivity is observed at d_{CuNi}= 4 nm. Increasing the Cu(1-x)Ni(x) layer thickness further, superconductivity reappears at d_{CuNi}=13 nm. Our experiments give evidence for the pairing function osc…
Quantum oscillations in resistivity and magnetization at high magnetic fields are a macroscopic fingerprint of the energy quantization due to the cyclotron motion of quasiparticles. In a thin Weyl semimetal, a unique thickness dependent Weyl-orbit quantum oscillation was proposed to exist, originating from a nonlocal cyclotron orbit via the electron tunneling between the top and bottom Fermi-arc surface states. Here, untwinned and high crystalline Weyl metal SrRuO$_3$ thin films with different thicknesses were grown on miscut SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates. Magneto-transport measurements were carr…
The research on two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets has promoted the development of ultrahigh-density and nanoscale data storage. However, intrinsic ferromagnetism in layered magnets is always subject to many factors, such as stacking orders, interlayer couplings, and the number of layers. Here, we report a magnetic transition from soft to hard ferromagnetic behaviors as the thickness of CrSiTe$_3$ flakes decreases down to several nanometers. Phenomenally, in contrast to the negligible hysteresis loop in the bulk counterparts, atomically thin CrSiTe$_3$ shows a rectangular lo…
When sheets of layered material like C, WS$_2$ or BN are restricted to finite sizes, they generally form single- and multi-walled hollow nanoparticles in order to avoid dangling bonds. Using continuum approaches to model elastic deformation and van der Waals interactions of spherical nanoparticles, we predict the variation of mechanical stability, adhesive properties and phase behavior with radius $R$ and thickness $h$. We find that mechanical stability is limited by forces in the nN range and pressures in the GPa range. Adhesion energies scale linearly with $R$, but depend only weakly on $h$.…
Actuation and control of motion in micro-mechanical systems are technological challenges, since they are accompanied by mechanical friction and wear, principal and well known sources of device lifetime reduction. In this theoretical work we propose a non-contact motion control technique based on the introduction of a tunable magnetic interaction. The latter is realized by coating two non-touching sliding bodies with ferromagnetic films. The resulting dynamics is determined by shape, size and ordering of magnetic domains arising in the films below the Curie temperature. We demonstrate that the …
Magnetic properties of thin films differs from that of the corresponding bulk materials and show novel physics as a result of their reduced size and dimensionality. Profound changes in magnetic properties can also result with exchange bias between the interface of the thin films of different materials. Here we present Fe$_3$O$_4$, Gd$_5$Si$_4$ and Fe$_3$O$_4$-Gd$_5$Si$_4$ bilayer thin films of varying thicknesses were prepared by RF Magnetron sputtering of Fe$_3$O$_4$ and Gd$_5$Si$_4$ targets on silicon substrates in high vacuum. Their magnetization was measured at room temperature in fields o…
First-principles alloy theory, formulated within the exact muffin-tin orbitals method in combination with the coherent-potential approximation, is used to study the mechanical properties of ferromagnetic body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe$_{1-x}$M$_x$ alloys (M=Mn or Ni, $0\le x \le 0.1$). We consider several physical parameters accessible from \emph{ab initio} calculations and their combinations in various phenomenological models to compare the effect of Mn and Ni on the properties of Fe. Alloying is found to slightly alter the lattice parameters and produce noticeable influence on elastic moduli. …
The asymmetry of the modal profiles for dipole-exchange spin waves propagating in in-plane magnetized ferromagnetic films at a right angle to the applied magnetic field has been investigated theoretically. It was found that in the large-magnetic moment ferromagnetic metallic films with typical thicknesses 10-60 nm the fundamental mode of the spectrum is localized at the surface opposite to the surface of localization of the exchange-free Damon-Eshbach surface wave. This anomalous localization of the wave does not affect the non-reciprocity of spin wave excitation by microstrip and coplanar tra…
We present a comprehensive study of the crystal structure of the thin-film, ferromagnetic topological insulator (Bi, Sb)$_{2-x}$V$_x$Te$_3$. The dissipationless quantum anomalous Hall edge states it manifests are of particular interest for spintronics, as a natural spin filter or pure spin source, and as qubits for topological quantum computing. For ranges typically used in experiments, we investigate the effect of doping, substrate choice and film thickness on the (Bi, Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ unit cell using high-resolution X-ray diffractometry. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-disp…
Interplay between Exchange Interaction and Magnetic Shape Anisotropy of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in a non-magnetic matrix for rare-earth-free permanent magnets
Epitaxially strained LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films were grown with different film thickness, t, on (001) oriented (LaAlO3)0.3(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates. After initial pseudomorphic growth the films start to relieve their strain partly by the formation of periodic nano-twins with twin planes predominantly along the <100> direction. Nano-twinning occurs already at the initial stage of growth, albeit in a more moderate way. Pseudomorphic grains, on the other hand, still grow up to a thickness of at least several tenths of nanometers. The twinning is attributed to the symmetry lowering of the…
We investigate the effect of strain and film thickness on the orbital and magnetic properties of LaSrCrO$_3$ (LSCO)/LaSrMnO$_3$ (LSMO) heterostructures using bulk magnetometry, soft X-ray magnetic spectroscopy, first-principles density functional theory, high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. We observe an anti-parallel ordering of the magnetic moments between the ferromagnetic LSMO layers and the LSCO spacers leading to a strain-independent ferromagnetic ground state of the LSCO/LSMO heterostructures for LSMO layers as thin as 2 unit cells. As the LSMO thickness is increas…
Superlattices composed of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 and ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layers were fabricated on (100) SrTiO3 substrates by a pulsed-laser deposition method. The capacitance and resistive parts of the samples were analyzed from the complex impedance measurements, performed on the samples using a special experimental set-up. The superlattice with larger ferroelectric thickness shows unique characteristics which are not present in the parent ferromagnetic thin film. The superlattice show both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric transitions which is an evidence for the coexistence …
Using density functional calculations we have examined the evolution of the electronic structure of SrRuO3 films grown on SrTiO3 substrates as a function of film thickness. At the ultrathin limit of two monolayers (RuO2-terminated surface) the films are found to be at the brink of a spin-state transition which drives the system to an antiferromagnetic and insulating state. Increasing the film thickness to four monolayers, one finds the surprising result that two entirely different solutions coexist. An antiferromagnetic insulating solution coexists with a metallic solution corresponding to an …
