Epitaxially strained LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films were grown with different film thickness, t, on (001) oriented (LaAlO3)0.3(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates. After initial pseudomorphic growth the films start to relieve their strain partly by the formation of periodic nano-twins with twin planes predominantly along the <100> direction. Nano-twinning occurs already at the initial stage of growth, albeit in a more moderate way. Pseudomorphic grains, on the other hand, still grow up to a thickness of at least several tenths of nanometers. The twinning is attributed to the symmetry lowering of the epitaxially strained pseudo-tetragonal structure towards the relaxed rhombohedral structure of bulk LCO. However, the unit-cell volume of the pseudo-tetragonal structure is found to be nearly constant over a very large range of t. Only films with t > 130 nm show a significant relaxation of the lattice parameters towards values comparable to those of bulk LCO.
In the framework of the LSDA+U method electronic structure and magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound Gd2Fe17 for both rhombohedral and hexagonal phases have been calculated. On top of that, ab initio exchange interaction parameters within the Fe sublattice for all present nearest and some next nearest Fe ions have been obtained. It was found that for the first coordination sphere direct exchange interaction is ferromagnetic. For the second coordination sphere indirect exchange interaction is observed to be weaker and of antiferromagnetic type. Employing the theoretical values of ex…
(La1-xSrx)(Zn1-yMny)AsO is a two dimensional diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor that has the advantage of decoupled charge and spin doping. The substitution of Sr2+ for La3+ and Mn2+ for Zn2+ into the parent semiconductor LaZnAsO introduces hole carriers and spins, respectively. This advantage enables us to investigate the influence of carrier doping on the ferromagnetic ordered state through the control of Sr concentrations in (La1-xSrx)(Zn0.9Mn0.1)AsO. 10 % Sr doping results in a ferromagnetic ordering below TC ~ 30 K. Increasing Sr concentration up to 30 % heavily suppresses the Curie temp…
In order to gain insight into suppression of the ferromagnetic ordering temperature, local studies utilizing 99,101Ru zero-field spin-echo NMR, along with complimentary magnetization, high-angle x-ray diffraction, and Ru K-edge XAFS measurements, have been carried out on samples of SrRuO3 annealed at both "ambient" (atmospheric) pressure and "high-pressure" oxygen (600 atm). For the "high pressure" sample, the results indicate structural disorder and the existence of some vacancies on the Ru sites, along with a reduced magnetic ordering temperature.
We have prepared crystalline nanowires (diameter ~ 50 nm, length ~ a few microns) of the charge ordering manganite Pr_0.5Ca_0.5Mn_O3 using a low reaction temperature hydrothermal method and characterized them using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and electron magnetic resonance measurements. While the bulk sample shows a charge ordering transition at 245 K and an antiferromagnetic transition at 175 K, SQUID magnetometry and electron magnetic resonance experiments reveal that in the nanowires phase, a ferromagnetic transition occurs at ~ 105 K. Further, t…
We present a rationalization of the Raman spectra of orthorhombic and rhombohedral, stoichiometric and doped, manganese perovskites. In particular we study RMnO3 (R= La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Y and Ca) and the different phases of Ca or Sr doped RMnO3 compounds as well as cation deficient RMnO3. The spectra of manganites can be understood as combinations of two kinds of spectra corresponding to two structural configurations of MnO6 octahedra and independently of the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. The main peaks of compounds with regular MnO6 octahedra, as CaMnO3, highly Ca …
From a Monte Carlo study of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model for doped manganites, including the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction ($J_{AF}$), we found that the ferromagnetic ordering was suppressed as $J_{AF}$ increased. The ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_c$, as obtained from a mean field fit to the calculated susceptibilities, was found to decrease monotonically with increasing $J_{AF}$. Further, the suppression in $T_c$ scales with the bandwidth narrowing induced by the antiferromagnetic frustration originating from $J_{AF}$. From these results, we propose that the c…
Nd_0.5 Ca_0.5 MnO_3 (NCMO) nanoparticles (average diameter ~ 20 and 40 nm) are synthesized by polymeric precursor sol-gel method and characterized by X- ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selective area electron diffraction (SAED), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometery and resistivity measurements. Both single crystalline and polycrystalline particles are present in the samples and they are found to retain the orthorhombic structure of the bulk NCMO. However, most strikingly, in the 20 nm particles, the charge ordered (CO) and the antiferromagn…
We present numerical calculations of the electron effective mass in an interacting, ferromagnetic, two-dimensional electron system. We consider quantum interaction effects associated with the charge-density fluctuation induced many-body vertex corrections. Our theory, which is free of adjustable parameters, reveals that the effective mass is suppressed (relative to its band value) in the strong coupling limit, in good agreement with the results of recent experimental measurements.
We use muon spin relaxation (muSR) to investigate the magnetic properties of a bulk form diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (DFS) Li1.15(Zn0.9Mn0.1)P with T_C ~ 22 K. MuSR results confirm the gradual development of ferromagnetic ordering below T_C with a nearly 100% magnetic ordered volume. Despite its low carrier density, the relation between static internal field and Curie temperature observed for Li(Zn,Mn)P is consistent with the trend found in (Ga,Mn)As and other bulk DFSs, indicating these systems share a common mechanism for the ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Li1+y(Zn1-xMnx)P has t…
CaCo2As2 is a unique itinerant system having strong magnetic frustration. Here we report the effect of electron doping on the physical properties resulting from Ni substitutions for Co. The A-type antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN = 52 K for x = 0 decreases to 22 K with only 3 percent Ni substitution and is completely suppressed for x > 0.11. For 0.11 < x < 0.52 strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations develop as revealed by magnetic susceptibility chi(T) measurements. Heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements reveal the presence of FM quantum spin fluctuations for 0.11 < x < 0.52. Our density-…
The low energy spectrum of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a N-site complete graph extended with on-site repulsion is obtained from the underlying spl(2,1) algebra properties in the strong coupling limit. The ferromagnetic ground state is realized for 1 and N+1 electrons only. We identify the large density of states to be responsible for the suppression of the ferromagnetic state and argue that a similar situation is encountered in the Kagome, pyrochlore, and other lattices with flat bands in their one-particle density of states.
By means of dynamical mean-field theory allowing for complete account of SU(2) rotational symmetry of interactions between spin-1/2 particles, we observe a strong effect of suppression of ferromagnetic order in the multiorbital Fermi-Hubbard model in comparison with a widely used restriction to density-density interactions. In the case of orbital degeneracy, we show that the suppression effect is the strongest in the two-orbital model (with effective spin $S_{\rm eff}=1$) and significantly decreases when considering three orbitals ($S_{\rm eff}=3/2$), thus magnetic ordering can effectively rev…
We describe the crystal structure and elementary magnetic properties of a previously unreported ternary intermetallic compound, Cr4PtGa17, which crystallizes in a rhombohedral unit cell in the noncentrosymmetric space group R3m. The crystal structure is closely related to those of XYZ half-Heusler compounds, where X, Y and Z are reported to be single elements only, occupying three different face-centered cubic sublattices. The new material, Cr4PtGa17, can be most straightforwardly illustrated by writing the formula as (PtGa2)(Cr4Ga14)Ga (X=PtGa2, Y = Cr4Ga14, Z = Ga), that is, the X and Y site…
Stoichiometric SnTe is theoretically a small gap semiconductor that undergoes a ferroelectric distortion on cooling. In reality however, crystals are always non-stoichiometric and metallic; the ferroelectric transition is therefore more accurately described as a polar structural transition. Here we study the Fermi surface using quantum oscillations as a function of pressure. We find the oscillation spectrum changes at high pressure, due to the suppression of the polar transition and less than 10 kbar is sufficient to stabilize the undistorted cubic lattice. This is accompanied by a large decre…
From Raman spectroscopy, magnetization, and thermal-expansion on the system La2/3(Ca1-xSrx)1/3MnO3, we have been able to provide a quantitative basis for the heterogeneous electronic model for manganites exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). We construct a mean-field model that accounts quantitatively for the measured deviation of TC(x) from the TC predicted by de Gennes double exchange in the adiabatic approximation, and predicts the occurrence of a first order transition for a strong coupling regime, in accordance with the experiments. The existence of a temperature interval TC<T<T* w…
The ground state magnetic behaviour of Ce2(Pd0.8Ag0.2)2In and Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2In, found in the ferromagnetic branch of Ce2Pd2In, has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction at low temperature. Ce2(Pd0.8Ag0.2)2In is characterized by a ferromagnetic structure with the Ce moments aligned along the c-axis and values of 0.96(2) mB. The compound retains the P4/mbm throughout the magnetic transition, although the magnetic ordering is accompanied by a significant decrease of the lattice strain along [00l], suggesting a magnetostructural contribution. The magnetic behaviour of Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2I…
We investigate the effect of substituting Si for Ge in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline UCoGe$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ samples show that ferromagnetic order and superconductivity are progressively depressed with increasing Si content and simultaneously vanish at a critical concentration $x_{cr} \simeq 0.12$. The non-Fermi liquid temperature variation in the electrical resistivity near $x_{cr}$ and the smooth depression of the ordered moment point to a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Su…
We present a systematic study on the physical properties of EuFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ (0$\leq$\emph{x}$\leq$0.2) by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and thermopower measurements. The undoped compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ undergoes a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition associated with Fe moments at 195 K, followed by antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at 20 K. Ni doping at the Fe site simultaneously suppresses the SDW transition and AFM ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments. For $x\geq$0.06, the magnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments evolves from antiferromagnetic to f…
In the correlated metal URhGe ferromagnetic order (T_C = 9.5 K) and superconductivity (T_s= 0.25 K) coexist at ambient pressure. Here we report on alloying URhGe by Ru, which enables one to tune the Curie temperature to 0 K. URuGe has a paramagnetic ground state and is isostructural to URhGe. We have prepared a series of polycrystalline URh_{1-x}Ru_{x}Ge samples over a wide range of x values. Magnetization and electrical resistivity data (T > 2 K) show, after an initial increase, a linear suppression of T_C with increasing x. The critical Ru concentration for the suppression of ferromagnetic o…
A first-principles electronic structure study of orthorhombic, monoclinic and rhombohedral LiMnO$_{2}$ has been carried out using the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method. The exchange and correlations have been treated within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the LSDA+U methods. In the LSDA, the stable ground state is antiferromagnetic insulator for the orthorhombic and monoclinic structures but is ferromagnetic metal for the rhombohedral structure. The LSDA+U, on the other hand, predicts the ground state to be an antiferromagnetic insulator for all structures. …
We have performed an extensive pressure-dependent structural, spectroscopic, and electrical transport study of LaCrSb$_3$. The ferromagnetic phase (T$_C$ = 120 K at p = 0 GPa) is fully suppressed by p = 26.5 GPa and the Cr-moment decreases steadily with increasing pressure. The unit cell volume decreases smoothly up to p = 55 GPa. We find that the bulk modulus and suppression of the magnetism are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, but the Cr-moment decreases smoothly with pressure, in contrast to steplike drops predicted by theory. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature appears to…
We apply the extended (statistically-consistent, SGA) Gutzwiller-type approach to the periodic Anderson model (PAM) in an applied magnetic field and in the strong correlation limit. The finite-U corrections are included systematically by transforming PAM into the form with Kondo-type interaction and residual hybridization, appearing both at the same time. This effective Hamiltonian represents the essence of \textit{Anderson-Kondo lattice model}. We show that in ferromagnetic phases the low-energy single-particle states are strongly affected by the presence of the applied magnetic field. We als…
Motivated by the recent observation of ferromagnetic spin correlations in the filled skutterudite SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$ [Ding et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 155149 (2018)], we have carried out $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements to investigate the role of magnetic fluctuations in a newly discovered isostructural superconductor SrOs$_4$As$_{12}$ with a superconducting transition temperature of $T_{\rm c}$ $\sim$ 4.8 K. Knight shift $K$ determined by the NQR spectrum under a small magnetic field ($\le$ 0.5 T) is nearly independent of temperature, …
We find that the long-range magnetic ordering is absent and electrical conduction suppressed in Y$_{1.7}$Bi$_{0.3}$Ir$_2$O$_7$/YSZ(100) thin film prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The sharp down-turn of inverse magnetic susceptibility X-1(T) from the conventional Curie-Weiss behaviour below T* ~ 168K suggests an inhomogeneous ferromagnetic Griffiths like phase. The transport and magnetic properties are explained on the basis of the coexistence of mixed oxidation states of Ir, (i.e. Ir4+ and Ir3+) leading to non-magnetic defects and reduction in t2g density of states at the Fermi level.
Substitution of Re for Ru in the heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 suppresses the hidden order transition and gives rise to ferromagnetism at higher concentrations. The hidden order transition of URu(2-x)Re(x)Si2, tracked via specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements, decreases in temperature and broadens, and is no longer observed for x>0.1. A critical scaling analysis of the bulk magnetization indicates that the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and ordered moment are suppressed continuously towards zero at a critical concentration of x = 0.15, accompanied by the additional suppres…
The correlated electron material CePd$_2$P$_2$ crystallizes in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure and orders ferromagnetically at 29 K. Lai et al. [Phys. Rev. B 97, 224406 (2018)] found evidence for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point induced by chemical compression via substitution of Ni for Pd. However, disorder effects due to the chemical substitution interfere with a simple analysis of the possible critical behavior. In the present work, we examine the temperature - pressure - magnetic field phase diagram of single crystalline CePd$_2$P$_2$ to 25 GPa using a combination of resistivity, magnet…
We report a study of isoelectronic chemical substitution in the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Upon silicon-doping, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of CeRh$_6$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_4$ is continuously suppressed, and no transition is observed beyond $x_c$$\approx$0.125. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with $C/T \propto$log($T^*/T$) is observed close to $x_c$, indicating the existence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the $T$-linear behavior observed upon pressurizing the parent compound is absent in the resistivity, which appears to be a consequence of the d…
We report synthesis of hexagonal LaVxCr1-xGe3 (x = 0-0.21, 1.00) single crystals, and present a systematic study of this series by measurements of temperature and field dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat. Ferromagnetism has been observed for x = 0-0.21, and the system manifests a strong axial anisotropy in its ordered state. The decrease of the saturated moment and the effective moment per Cr with the increase of V-concentration suggests this is an itinerant ferromagnetic system. The Curie temperature declines monotonically as the V-concentration i…
We combine structural and magnetic measurements to compare the different magnetic phase diagrams between the pressure and substitution studies in CeTiGe3. We report on the structural, magnetic, and electrical transport properties of single crystals of CeTi1-xVxGe3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.9, and 1), and of polycrystalline samples (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8), as well as structural properties of CeTiGe3 under pressure up to 9 GPa. The ferromagnetic ordering in CeTiGe3 is suppressed with V doping in CeTi1-xVxGe3, and suggests a possible ferromagnetic quantum critical point near x = 0.45. We per…
We have investigated magnetic, electrical and thermal transport properties (Seebeck effect and thermal conductivity) of LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_{2-y}$Cr$_{y}$O$_{7}$ polycrystalline samples ($y$=0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6). The Cr$^{3+}$ substitution for Mn$^{3+}$ sites causes a removal of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital of $e_g$-electron resulting in a volume shrinkage of lattice. Magnetic measurements reveal the appearance of a glassy behavior for Cr-doped samples, accompanied by both a collapse of the A-type antiferromagnetic structure and the growth of ferromagnetic clusters. Cr-doping effect on electrical transpo…
In the ferromagnetic (FM) Weyl semimetal CeAlSi both space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken. Our quantum oscillation (QO) data indicate that the FM ordering modifies the Fermi surface topology and also leads to an unusual drop in the QO amplitude. In the FM phase, we find a pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous and the loop Hall effects. This cannot be explained based on the electronic band structure or magnetic structure, both of which are nearly pressure independent. Instead, we show that a simplified model describing the scattering of Weyl fermions off FM domain wal…
Epitaxial thin films of LaCoO_{3} (E-LCO) exhibit ferromagnetic order with a transition temperature T_c = 85 K, while polycrystalline thin LaCoO_{3} films (P-LCO) remain paramagnetic. The temperature-dependent spin-state structure for both E-LCO and P-LCO was studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Co L_{2,3} and O K edges. Considerable spectral redistributions over temperature are observed for P-LCO. The spectra for E-LCO, on the other hand, do not show any significant changes for temperatures between 30 K and 450 K at both edges, indicating that the spin state remains constant and th…
We investigate the physical properties and electronic structure upon Cr-doping in the iron arsenide layers of BaFe2As2. This form of hole-doping leads to suppression of the magnetic/structural phase transition in BaFe2-xCrxAs2 for x > 0, but does not lead to superconductivity. For various x values, temperature dependence of the resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, Hall coefficient, and single crystal x-ray diffraction data are presented. The materials show signatures of approaching a ferromagnetic state with x, including a metamagnetic transition for x as little as 0.36, an enh…
The ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in the perovskite ruthenate Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ is studied by low-temperature magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements on thin films. The films were grown epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using metalorganic aerosol deposition and characterized by X-ray diffraction and room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. High residual resistivity ratios of 29 and 16 for $x=0$ and $x=1$, respectively, prove the high quality of the investigated samples. We observe a continuous suppression of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature from $T_C=16…
