In the framework of the LSDA+U method electronic structure and magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound Gd2Fe17 for both rhombohedral and hexagonal phases have been calculated. On top of that, ab initio exchange interaction parameters within the Fe sublattice for all present nearest and some next nearest Fe ions have been obtained. It was found that for the first coordination sphere direct exchange interaction is ferromagnetic. For the second coordination sphere indirect exchange interaction is observed to be weaker and of antiferromagnetic type. Employing the theoretical values of exchange parameters Curie temperatures Tc of both hexagonal and rhombohedral phases of Gd2Fe17 within Weiss mean-field theory were estimated. Obtained values of Tc and its increase going from the hexagonal to rhombohedral crystal structure of Gd2Fe17 agree well with experiment. Also for both structures LSDA+U computed values of total magnetic moment coincide with experimental ones.
Magnetic and dielectric properties of the hexagonal triangular lattice antiferromagnet 2H-AgFeO2 have been studied by neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, pyroelectric current, and dielectric constant measurements. The ferroelectric polarization, P ~ 5 μC/m2, has been found to appear below 11 K due to a polar nature of the magnetic ground state of the system. In the temperature range of 11 K < T < 18 K, an incommensurate spin density wave (ICM1) with the nonpolar magnetic point group mmm1' and the k1 = (0,q1_b,0; q1_b = 0.390-0.405)propagation vector takes place. Below …
Hexagonal Dy(0.5)Y(0.5)MnO3, a multiferroic rare-earth manganite with geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetism, has been investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. Below 3.4 K magnetic order is observed on both the Mn (antiferromagnetic) and Dy (ferrimagnetic) sublattices that is identical to that of undiluted hexagonal DyMnO3 at low temperature. The Mn moments undergo a spin reorientation transition between 3.4 K and 10 K, with antiferromagnetic order of the Mn sublattice persisting up to 70 K; the antiferromagnetic order in this phase is distinct from that observed…
We study magnetic properties of the half-filled Hubbard model on the two-dimensional hexagonal golden-mean tiling. We find that the vertex model of the tiling is bipartite, with a sublattice imbalance of $\sqrt{5}/(6τ^3)$ (where $τ$ is the golden mean), and that the non-interacting tight-binding model gives macroscopically degenerate states at $E=0$. We clarify that each sublattice has specific types of confined states, which in turn leads to an interesting spatial pattern in the local magnetizations in the weak coupling regime. Furthermore, this allows us to analytically obtain the lower boun…
We predict the phenomenon of antiferroelectric resonance (AFER), in which an ac electric field causes magnetic ions located at noncentrosymmetric positions in a multi-sublattice magnet to undergo magnetic transitions corresponding to exchange collective excitations of the system. We construct a theory of such resonances, and show that in magnets with collinear magnetic structures AFER is caused by relativistic and exchange-relativistic magnetoelectric interactions, while in the noncollinear magnets a significant contribution can also come from the exchange magnetoelectric interaction. We predi…
We study the phase diagram of the fermionic Hubbard model on the hexagonal lattice in the space of on-site and nearest neighbor couplings with Hybrid-Monte-Carlo simulations. With pure on-site repulsion this allows to determine the critical coupling strength for spin-density wave formation with the standard approach of introducing a small mass term, explicitly breaking the sublattice symmetry. The analogous mass term for charge-density wave formation above a critical nearest-neighbor repulsion, on the other hand, would introduce a fermion sign problem. The competition between the two and the p…
A two-staged, uniaxial magnetoresistive effect has been discovered in SrCo6O11 having a layered hexagonal structure. Conduction electrons and localized Ising spins are in different sublattices but their interpenetration makes the conduction electrons sensitively pick up the stepwise field-dependence of magnetization. The stepwise field-dependence suggests two competitive interlayer interactions between ferromagnetic Ising-spin layers, i.e., a ferromagnetic nearest-layer interaction and an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-layer interaction. This oxide offers a unique opportunity to study nontrivi…
In crystalline solids the interactions of charge and spin can result in a variety of emergent quantum ground states, especially in partially filled, topological flat bands such as Landau levels or in 'magic-angle' bilayer graphene. Much less explored is rhombohedral graphite (RG), perhaps the simplest and structurally most perfect condensed matter system to host a flat band protected by symmetry. By scanning tunneling microscopy we map the flat band charge density of 8, 10 and 17 layers and identify a domain structure emerging from a competition between a sublattice antiferromagnetic insulator…
We study the classical Heisenberg model on a recently identified three dimensional corner-shared equilateral triangular lattice, a magnetic sublattice to a large class of systems with the symmetry group P2$_1$3. Since the degree of geometric frustration of the nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic model on this lattice lies on the border between the pyrochlore (not ordered) and hexagonal (ordered) lattices, it is non-trivial to predict its ground state. Using a classical rotor model, we find an ordered ground state with wavevector $(\frac{2π}{3a_0},0,0)$ featuring 120$^o$ rotated spins on each tr…
We present the results of the Monte-Carlo simulation of graphene-like statistical model in terms of occupation numbers. We study the problem of the phase transition in graphene to an insulating phase. Only antiferromagnetic order parameter was studied at the moment by means of Hybrid Monte-Carlo process on the hexagonal lattice because of the sign problem for excitonic order parameter in fermionic determinant. Therefore we have studied the possibility of the phase transition to an excitonic phase by means of simplified Monte-Carlo process on the hexagonal lattice. We show that this phase, whic…
The results of magnetic investigations on a new series of compounds, Mn2R3Sb3O14, containing 2-dimensional Kagome lattice of R ions and belonging to pyrochlore series, are presented. Crystallographic features of light R members (R= La, Pr and Nd) of this family, as established in the recent literature, have been reported to be novel in many respects, in particular, the rhomohedral nature of the structure which is rare among pyrochlores. It was also reported that, as the R becomes heavier, beyond R= Sm, the fraction of well-known cubic pyrochlore phase tends to gradually dominate. Here, we repo…
Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling, we investigate the XY antiferromagnet on the triangular, Union Jack and bisected-hexagonal lattices, and in each case find both Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. As is well-known, on the triangular lattice, as the temperature decreases the system develops chiral order for temperatures $T < \Tc$, and then quasi-long-range magnetic order on its sublattices when $T < \Ts$, with $\Ts < \Tc$. The behavior $\Ts<\Tc$ is predicted by theoretical arguments due to Korshunov, based on the unbinding of kink-antikink pairs. On the Union Jack a…
The symmetric splitting of two spin-wave branches in an antiferromagnetic resonance (AFR) experiment has been an essential measurement of antiferromagnets for over half a century. In this work, circularly polarized time-domain THz spectroscopy experiments performed on the low symmetry multiferroic h-HoMnO$_3$ reveal an AFR of the Mn sublattice to split asymmetrically in applied magnetic field, with an $\approx$ 50\% difference in $g$-factors between the high and low energy branches of this excitation. The temperature dependence of the $g$-factors, including a drastic renormalization at the Ho …
We have studied the C14 hexagonal Laves phase of YbAg$_2$ at normal conditions and under external pressure up to 19 GPa by the time-differential perturbed angular $γ-γ$ correlation spectroscopy (TDPAC) using $^{111}$Cd probe nuclei. Under pressure the valence of Yb undergoes a two stage transition from 2.8 to 3. The two stage scenario is characterized by two distinct quadrupole frequencies of $^{111}$Cd probes in silver sublattice, monotonically increasing with pressure and saturating at 8 and 16 GPa. Our experimental data are compared with the density functional studies of the electron band s…
Of the two stable forms of graphite, hexagonal (HG) and rhombohedral (RG), the former is more common and has been studied extensively. RG is less stable, which so far precluded its detailed investigation, despite many theoretical predictions about the abundance of exotic interaction-induced physics. Advances in van der Waals heterostructure technology have now allowed us to make high-quality RG films up to 50 graphene layers thick and study their transport properties. We find that the bulk electronic states in such RG are gapped and, at low temperatures, electron transport is dominated by surf…
Ferromagnetism is most common in transition metal compounds but may also arise in low-density two-dimensional electron systems, with signatures observed in silicon, III-V semiconductor systems, and graphene moiré heterostructures. Here we show that gate-tuned van Hove singularities in rhombohedral trilayer graphene drive the spontaneous ferromagnetic polarization of the electron system into one or more spin- and valley flavors. Using capacitance measurements on graphite-gated van der Waals heterostructures, we find a cascade of density- and electronic displacement field tuned phase transitions…

We construct a field-theoretic description of spin waves in hexagonal antiferromagnets with three magnetic sublattices and coplanar $120^\circ$ magnetic order. The three Goldstone modes can be separated by point-group symmetry into a singlet $α_{0}$ and a doublet $(β_x,β_y)$. The $α_0$ singlet is described by the standard theory of a free relativistic scalar field. The field theory of the $(β_x,β_y)$ doublet is analogous to the theory of elasticity of a two-dimensional isotropic solid with distinct longitudinal and transverse "speeds of sound". The well-known Heisenberg models on the triangula…
The properties of RbBi$_2$, a 4.15 K superconductor, were investigated using magnetic field, pressure and neutron diffraction. Under hydrostatic pressure, an almost 50 % reduction of T$_c$ is observed, linked to a low Debye temperature estimated at 165 K. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility were measured on quenched and slow-cooled polycrystalline samples. The resistivity follows a low temperature power-law dependence in both types of samples, while the diamagnetic susceptibility, $χ$, is dependent on the sample cooling history. Slow-cooled samples have a $χ= -1$ while quenched samples…
We describe here a quantum simulator of extended bipartite Hubbard model with broken sublattice symmetry. The simulator consists of a structured lateral gate confining two dimensional electrons in a quantum well into artificial minima arranged in a hexagonal lattice. The sublattice symmetry breaking is generated by forming an artificial triangular graphene quantum dot (ATGQD) with zigzag edges. The resulting extended Hubbard model generates tunable ratio of tunneling strength to electron-electron interactions and of sublattice symmetry with control over shape. The validity of the simulator is …
Using first-principle Hybrid-Monte-Carlo (HMC) simulations, we carry out an unbiased study of the competition between spin-density wave (SDW) and charge-density wave (CDW) order in the extended Hubbard model on the two dimensional hexagonal lattice at half filling. We determine the phase diagram in the space of on-site and nearest-neighbor couplings $U$ and $V$ in the region $V<U/3$, which can be simulated without a fermion sign problem, and find that a transition from semimetal to a SDW phase occurs at sufficiently large $U$ for basically all $V$. Tracing the corresponding phase boundary from…
We have synthesized YbPdAs with the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure, in which the Yb-atoms form a distorted kagome sublattice in the hexagonal basal plane. Magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic measurements indicate that YbPdAs is a low-carrier Kondo lattice compound with an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{N}$ = 6.6 K, which is slightly suppressed in applied magnetic fields up to 9 T. The magnetic entropy at $T_\mathrm{N}$ recovers only 33\% of $R\ln{2}$, the full entropy of the ground state doublet of the Yb-ions. The resistivity displays a $-\ln T$ dependence between 30 and 15 K,…
We study the effect of Coulomb interaction between charge carriers on the properties of graphene monolayer, assuming that the strength of the interaction is controlled by the dielectric permittivity of the substrate on which the graphene layer is placed. To this end we consider the tight-binding model on the hexagonal lattice coupled to the non-compact gauge field. The action of the latter is also discretized on the hexagonal lattice. Equilibrium ensembles of gauge field configurations are obtained using the Hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm. Our numerical results indicate that at sufficiently stro…
We report a high-resolution neutron diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structure of the orbitally-degenerate frustrated metallic magnet AgNiO2. At high temperatures the structure is hexagonal with a single crystallographic Ni site, low-spin Ni3+ with spin-1/2 and two-fold orbital degeneracy, arranged in an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice with frustrated spin and orbital order. A structural transition occurs upon cooling below 365 K to a tripled hexagonal unit cell containing three crystallographically-distinct Ni sites with expanded and contracted NiO6 octahedra, naturally expl…
MoTe2 is a rare transition-metal ditelluride having two kinds of layered polytypes, hexagonal structure with trigonal prismatic Mo coordination and monoclinic structure with octahedral Mo coordination. The monoclinic distortion in the latter is caused by anisotropic metal-metal bonding. In this work, we have examined the Nb doping effect on both polytypes of MoTe2 and clarified a structural phase diagram for Mo1-xNbxTe2 containing four kinds of polytypes. A rhombohedral polytype crystallizing in polar space group has been newly identified as a high-temperature metastable phase at slightly Nb-r…
We present an element selective resonant magnetic x-ray scattering study of NdFe3(BO3)4 as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. Our measurements show that the magnetic order of the Nd sublattice is induced by the Fe spin order. When a magnetic field is applied parallel to the hexagonal basal plane, the helicoidal spin order is suppressed and a collinear ordering, where the moments are forced to align in a direction perpendicular to the applied magnetic field, is stabilized. This result excludes a non-collinear spin order as the origin of the magnetically induced electric polar…
