Effective mass suppression in a ferromagnetic two-dimensional electron liquid

Metallic states beyond Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids in one dimension

In this paper, we propose some new strongly correlated gapless states (or critical states) of spin-1/2 electrons in 1+1-dimensions, such as doped anti-ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising chain. We find doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain to be a different metallic phase from the doped ferromagnetic Ising chain, despite the two have identical symmetry. The doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain has a finite energy gap for all charge-1 fermionic excitations even without pairing caused by attractive interactions, resembling the pseudo-gap phase of underdoped high Tc superconductors. Spin dependent transport in ferromagnetic/superconductor/ferromagnetic single electron transistor

Ferromagnetic single electron transistors with Al islands and orthogonal ferromagnetic leads (Co) are fabricated using ebeam lithography followed by shadow evaporation techniques. I-V characteristics exhibit typical single electron tunneling effects. Transport measurements performed in external magnetic field show that, when the two ferromagnetic leads are in antiparallel configuration, spin imbalance leads to a suppression of superconductivity.

Nuclear spin ferromagnetic phase transition in an interacting 2D electron gas

Electrons in a two-dimensional semiconducting heterostructure interact with nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. Using a a Kondo lattice formulation of the electron-nuclear spin interaction, we show that the nuclear spin system within an interacting two-dimensional electron gas undergoes a ferromagnetic phase transition at finite temperatures. We find that electron-electron interactions and non-Fermi liquid behavior substantially enhance the nuclear spin Curie temperature into the $mK$ range with decreasing electron density.

Enhancement in tunneling density of states in Luttinger liquid -- role of non-local interaction

Power law suppression of local electronic tunneling density of states (TDOS) in the zero-energy limit is a hallmark of Luttinger liquid (LL) phase of the interacting 1-D electron system. We present a theoretical model which hosts LL state with the surprising feature of enhancement rather than suppression in local TDOS originating from non-local and repulsive density-density interactions. Importantly, we find enhancement of TDOS in the manifold of parameter space where the system is stable in the renormalization group (RG) sense. Suppression of superconductivity due to spin imbalance in Co/Al/Co single electron transistor

Transport properties of ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic single electron transistors are investigated as a function of external magnetic field, temperature, bias and gate voltage. By designing the magnetic electrodes to have different switching fields, a two-mode device is realized having two stable magnetization states, with the electrodes aligned in parallel and antiparallel. Calculation of magnon drag force induced by an electric current in ferromagnetic metals

Magnon drag effect induced by an applied electric field in ferromagnetic metals is theoretically studied by a microscopic calculation of the force on magnons arising from magnon emission/absorption and scattering due to driven electrons. It is shown that magnon scattering contribution dominates over the emission/absorption one in a wide temperature regime in good metals with long elastic lifetime $\taue$, as the latter has a relative suppression factor of $(\Deltasd\taue)^{-2}$ due to the electron spin flip by the magnon, where $\Deltasd$ is the $sd$ exchange interaction energy. The dc Josephson effect in a one-dimensional Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid is studied on the basis of two bosonized models. We first consider a TL liquid sandwiched between two superconductors with a strong barrier at each interface. Both the interfaces are assumed to be perfect if the barrier potential is absent. We next consider a TL liquid with open boundaries, weakly coupled with two superconductors. Deviation from Fermi-liquid behavior in two-dimensional surface states of Au-induced nanowires on Ge(001) by correlation and localization

The electronic states of Au-induced atomic nanowires on Ge(001) (Au/Ge(001) NWs) have been investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with linearly polarized light. We have found three electron pockets around $\bar{J}\bar{K}$, where the Fermi surfaces are closed in a surface Brillouin zone, indicating that the surface states of Au/Ge(001) NWs are two-dimensional whereas the atomic structure is one-dimensional. Evidence for Majorana bound states in transport properties of hybrid structures based on helical liquids

Majorana bound states can emerge as zero-energy modes at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in proximity to an ordinary s-wave superconductor. The presence of an additional ferromagnetic domain close to the superconductor can lead to their localization. We consider both N-S and S-N-S junctions based on helical liquids and study their spectral properties for arbitrary ferromagnetic scatterers in the normal region. Electromagnetic propulsion and separation by chirality of nanoparticles in liquids

We introduce a new mechanism for the propulsion and separation by chirality of small ferromagnetic particles suspended in a liquid. Under the action of a uniform d.c. magnetic field H and an a.c. electric field E isomers with opposite chirality move in opposite directions. Such a mechanism could have a significant impact on a wide range of emerging technologies. The component of the chiral velocity that is odd in H is found to be proportional to the intrinsic orbital and spin angular momentum of the magnetized electrons. Spin-Related Current Suppression in a Semiconductor-Quantum-Dot Spin-Diode Structure

We experimentally study the transport features of electrons in a spin-diode structure consisting of a single semiconductor quantum dot (QD) weakly coupled to one nonmagnetic (NM) and one ferromagnetic (FM) lead, in which the QD has an artificial atomic nature. A Coulomb stability diamond shows asymmetric features with respect to the polarity of the bias voltage. For the regime of two-electron tunneling, we find anomalous suppression of the current for both forward and reverse bias. Nematic versus ferromagnetic shells: new insights in curvature-induced effects

Within the framework of continuum theory, we draw a parallel between ferromagnetic materials and nematic liquid crystals confined on curved surfaces, which are both characterized by local interaction and anchoring potentials. We show that the extrinsic curvature of the shell combined with the out-of-plane component of the director field gives rise to chirality effects. This interplay produces an effective energy term reminiscent of the chiral term in cholesteric liquid crystals, with the curvature tensor acting as a sort of anisotropic helicity.
