Rotating convective turbulence is ubiquitously found across geophysical settings, such as surface and subsurface oceans, planetary atmospheres, molten metal planetary cores, magma chambers, and magma oceans. Depending on the thermal and material properties of the system, buoyant convection can be driven thermally or compositionally, where a Prandtl number ($Pr = ν/ κ_i$) defines the characteristic diffusion properties of the system, with $κ_i = κ_T$ representing thermal diffusion and $κ_i = κ_C$ representing chemical diffusion. These numbers vary widely for geophysical systems; for example, the liquid iron undergoing thermal-compositional convection in Earth's core is defined by $Pr_T \approx 0.1$ and $Pr_C \approx 100$, while a thermally-driven liquid silicate magma ocean is defined by $Pr_T \approx 100$. Currently, most numerical and laboratory data for rotating convective flows exists at $Pr = O(1)$; high $Pr$ rotating convection relevant to compositionally-driven core flow and other systems is less commonly studied. Here, we address this deficit by carrying out a broad suite of rotating convection experiments made over a range of $Pr$ values, employing water and three different silicone oils as our working fluids ($Pr = $ 6, 41, 206, and 993). Using measurements of flow velocities (Reynolds, $Re$) and heat transfer efficiency (Nusselt, $Nu$), a baroclinic torque balance is found to describe the turbulence regardless of Prandtl number so long as $Re$ is sufficiently large ($Re \gtrsim 10$). Estimated turbulent scales are found to remain close to onset scales in all experiments, a result that may extrapolate to planetary settings. Lastly, we use our data to build $Pr$-dependent predictive nondimensional and dimensional scaling relations for rotating convective velocities that can be applied across a broad range of geophysical fluid dynamical settings.
Convective turbulence in a Rayleigh Benard system has shown a marked reluctance to exhibit clear scaling in the energy or entropy spectrum. The recent numerical simulation of Pandey, Verma and Mishra has shown significantly better evidence of scaling in the infinite Prandtl number limit. This prompted us to look at this limit analytically. We find that the inevitable presence of sweeping helps give a very good understanding of the results of Pandey et. al. In the presence of rotation, the Rayleigh number dependence of the Nusselt number shows a strong increase in slope in recent experiments an…
The dynamics of suspensions plays a crucial role on the evolution of geophysical systems such as lava lakes, magma chambers and magma oceans. During their cooling and solidification, these magmatic bodies involve convective viscous fluids and dispersed solid crystals that can form either a cumulate or a floating lid by sedimentation. We study such systems based on internal heating convection experiments in high Prandtl fluids bearing plastic beads. We aim to determine the conditions required to produce a floating lid or a sedimented deposit. We show that although the sign of particles buoyancy…

Aims: To study the statistics of convective flows and energy transport as functions of the Prandtl number. Methods: Three-dimensional numerical simulations convection in Cartesian geometry are used. The convection zone (CZ) is embedded between two stably stratified layers. Statistics and transport properties of up- and downflows are studied separately. Results: The rms velocity increases with decreasing Prandtl number. At the same time the fil…
Direct numerical simulations of turbulent convection at high Rayleigh numbers in large aspect ratio cells are challenging because of the prohibitive computational resources required. One can achieve high Rayleigh numbers at affordable costs for low aspect ratios, but the effect of small aspect ratio remains to be understood fully. In this work, we explore integral quantities in convection in a cell with the small aspect ratio of 0.1 by varying both the Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers systematically. We find that the heat transport in this flow is within 10\% of that in cells with large aspect rat…
Compositional convection is thought to be an important energy source for magnetic field generation within planetary interiors. The Prandtl number, $Pr$, characterizing compositional convection is significantly larger than unity, suggesting that the inertial force may not be important on the small scales of convection as long as the buoyancy force is not too strong. We develop asymptotic dynamo models for the case of small Rossby number and large Prandtl number in which inertia is absent on the convective scale. The relevant diffusivity parameter for this limit is the compositional Roberts numb…
Constructing simpler models, either stochastic or deterministic, for exploring the phenomenon of flow reversals in fluid systems is in vogue across disciplines. Using direct numerical simulations and nonlinear time series analysis, we illustrate that the basic nature of flow reversals in convecting fluids can depend on the dimensionless parameters describing the system. Specifically, we find evidence of low-dimensional determinism in flow reversals occurring at zero Prandtl number, whereas we fail to find such signatures for reversals at infinite Prandtl number. Thus, even in a single system, …
We experimentally and numerically investigated the generation of plumes from a local heat source (LHS) and studied the interaction of these plumes with cellular convective motion (CCM) in a rectangular cavity filled with silicon oil at a Prandtl number (Pr) of approximately two thousand. The LHS is generated using a 0.2-W green laser beam. A roll-type CCM is generated by vertically heating one side of the cavity. The CCM may lead to the formation of an unusual spiral convective plume that resembles a vertical Archimedes spiral. A similar plume is obtained in a direct numerical simulation. We d…
Observations suggest that the large-scale convective velocities obtained by solar convection simulations might be over-estimated (convective conundrum). One plausible solution to this could be the small-scale dynamo which cannot be fully resolved by global simulations. The small-scale Lorentz force suppresses the convective motions and also the turbulent mixing of entropy between upflows and downflows, leading to a large effective Prandtl number ($\Pr$). We explore this idea in three-dimensional global rotating convection simulations at different thermal conductivity ($κ$), i.e., at different …
Buoyancy effect on low-flow condition convective heat transfer of non-conventional coolants, such as liquid metal and molten salts, is a crucial safety factor to advanced reactors under transient or accidental scenarios. The distinct heat transfer characteristics of non-unitary Prandtl fluids and the inherent complexity of the low-flow mixed convection phenomena requires the development of novel turbulent and heat transfer models that are adaptive to different spatiotemporal scales involved in the mixed convection heat transfer. In this work, direct numerical simulation of low-flow mixed conve…
Horizontally extended turbulent convection, termed mesoscale convection in natural systems, remains a challenge to investigate in both experiments and simulations. This is particularly so for very low molecular Prandtl numbers as in stellar convection and in Earth's outer core. The present study reports three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in square boxes of side length $L$ and height $H$ with the aspect ratio $Γ=L/H$ of 25, for Prandtl numbers that span almost 4 orders of magnitude, $10^{-3}\le Pr \le 7$, and Rayleigh numbers $10^5 \le Ra \le …
Convection is the predominant mechanism by which energy and angular momentum are transported in the outer portion of the Sun. The resulting overturning motions are also the primary energy source for the solar magnetic field. An accurate solar dynamo model therefore requires a complete description of the convective motions, but these motions remain poorly understood. Studying stellar convection numerically remains challenging; it occurs within a parameter regime that is extreme by computational standards. The fluid properties of the convection zone are characterized in part by the Prandtl numbe…
We investigate the onset of convective instability and subsequent transitions near it in Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) of electrically conducting low Prandtl-number (Pr) fluids in the simultaneous presence of rotation about the vertical axis and external uniform horizontal magnetic field with free-slip boundary conditions. Both three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) and low dimensional modeling of the system have been performed for the investigation. DNS results show a plethora of patterns near the onset of convection for weak magnetic field. Most interestingly, the Nusselt nu…
The linear theory for rotating compressible convection in a plane layer geometry is presented for the astrophysically-relevant case of low Prandtl number gases. When the rotation rate of the system is large, the flow remains geostrophically balanced for all stratification levels investigated and the classical (i.e., incompressible) asymptotic scaling laws for the critical parameters are recovered. For sufficiently small Prandtl numbers, increasing stratification tends to further destabilise the fluid layer, decrease the critical wavenumber and increase the oscillation frequency of the convecti…
In this paper we present various convective states of zero-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and a 27-mode low-dimensional model containing the energetic modes of DNS. The origin of these convective states have been explained using bifurcation analysis. The system is chaotic at the onset itself with three coexisting chaotic attractors that are born at two codimension-2 bifurcation points. One of the bifurcation points with a single zero eigenvalue and a complex pair $(0,\pm i ω)$ generates chaotic attractors and associated periodic, quasiperiodi…
Most large-scale planetary magnetic fields are thought to be driven by low Rossby number convection of a low magnetic Prandtl number fluid. Here kinematic dynamo action is investigated with an asymptotic, rapidly rotating dynamo model for the plane layer geometry that is intrinsically low magnetic Prandtl number. The thermal Prandtl number and Rayleigh number are varied to illustrate fundamental changes in flow regime, ranging from laminar cellular convection to geostrophic turbulence in which an inverse energy cascade is present. A decrease in the efficiency of the convection to generate a dy…
We study the formation, longevity and breakdown of convective rings during impulsive spin-up in square and cylindrical containers using direct numerical simulations. The rings, which are axisymmetric alternating regions of up- and down-welling flow that can last for O (100) rotation times, were first demonstrated experimentally and arise due to a balance between Coriolis and viscous effects. We study the formation of these rings in the context of the Greenspan-Howard spin-up process, the disruption of which modifies ring formation and evolution. We show that, unless imprinted by boundary geome…
The value of the Prandtl number $P$ exerts a strong influence on convection-driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells filled with electrically conducting fluids. Low Prandtl numbers promote dynamo action through the shear provided by differential rotation, while the generation of magnetic fields is more difficult to sustain in high-Prandtl-number fluids where higher values of the magnetic Prandtl number $P_m$ are required. The magnetostrophic approximation often used in dynamo theory appears to be valid only for relatively high values of $P$ and $P_m$. Dynamos with a minimum value of $P_m$ s…
Dependence of boundary layer thickness on layer height in laminar and transient regimes is studied for convection from localised heat source with an open surface. The measurements of Nusselt number and characteristic frequency of thermal plume formation are done for a wide range of Rayleigh number, different Prandtl numbers and different aspect ratios. The obtained results prove that for the developed (but not turbulent) convective flow the boundary layer thickness is almost independent of the layer height and it is mainly defined by applied temperature difference and physical properties of th…
New bounds are proven on the mean vertical convective heat transport, $\overline{\langle wT \rangle}$, for uniform internally heated (IH) convection in the limit of infinite Prandtl number. For fluid in a horizontally-periodic layer between isothermal boundaries, we show that $\overline{\langle wT \rangle} \leq \frac12 - c R^{-2}$, where $R$ is a nondimensional `flux' Rayleigh number quantifying the strength of internal heating and $c = 216$. Then, $\overline{\langle wT \rangle} = 0$ corresponds to vertical heat transport by conduction alone, while $\overline{\langle wT \rangle} > 0$ represent…
We present a detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns for low-Prandtl number ($P=0.0002, 0.002, 0.005, 0.02$) Rayleigh-Bénard convection near its onset. We use both direct numerical simulations and a 30-mode low-dimensional model for this study. We observe that low-Prandtl number (low-P) convection exhibits similar patterns and chaos as zero-P convection \cite{pal:2009}, namely squares, asymmetric squares, oscillating asymmetric squares, relaxation oscillations, and chaos. At the onset of convection, low-P convective flows have stationary 2D rolls and associated stationary a…
The aim is to laboratory simulation of convective plumes in the lower mantle, generated by a hot spot on the Earth's core. In the fluid dynamics video, presented results of experimental modeling of the plume from the hot point generated by the laser. Demonstrated that in a fluid with a high Prandtl number, point heating can generate complex spiral plumes. This experimental result allows us to question the classical notion of a mantle plume, as the column of heat.
We consider the onset of Boussinesq convection in a horizontal layer of electrically conducting incompressible fluid with rigid electrically insulating horizontal boundaries. The fluid is heated from below and rotates about a vertical axis; vertical magnetic field is imposed. The instability of the trivial steady state (fluid at rest) can be monotonic or oscillatory depending on parameters of the problem (the kinematic and magnetic Prandtl, Taylor and Chandrasekhar numbers). If the Taylor number is sufficiently large, convective rolls, emerging in the monotonic instability, experience the Küpp…
This study offers an explanation of a recently observed effect of destabilization of free convective flows by weak rotation. After studying several models where flows are driven by a simultaneous action of convection and rotation, it is concluded that the destabilization is observed in the cases where centrifugal force acts against main convective circulation. At relatively low Prandtl numbers this counter action can split the main vortex into two counter rotating vortices, where the interaction leads to instability. At larger Prandtl numbers, the counter action of the centrifugal force steepe…
We extend the notion of a shell model to stratified systems, and propose one that represents stratified, nonmagnetic, nonrotating convection at low Mach number. Motivated by profiles of background stratification that support convection in stars such as the Sun, we study numerical solutions corresponding to a highly unstable layer above a mildly unstable layer. We find that at low Prandtl number, convective amplitudes decrease with depth in the lower layer. This suggests that the suppression of convection in the deeper layers of the Sun's convection zone (the convective conundrum) can be addres…
We present the first large scale numerical simulation of three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection near onset, under free-free boundary conditions for a fluid of Prandtl number $σ=0.5$. We find that a spatiotemporally chaotic state emerges immediately above onset, which we investigate as a function of the reduced control parameter $ε$. We conclude that the transition from conduction to spatiotemporal chaos is second order and of ``mean field'' character. We also present a simple theory for the time-averaged convective current. Finally, we show that the time-averaged structure factor satisfi…
A model for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids near onset with rigid horizontal boundaries in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is constructed and analyzed in detail. The kinetic energy $K$, the convective entropy $Φ$ and the convective heat flux ($Nu-1$) show scaling behaviour with $ε= r-1$ near onset of convection, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. The model is also used to investigate various magneto-convective structures close to the onset. Straight rolls, which appear at the primary instability, become unstable with increase i…
The effect of uniform magnetic field applied along a fixed horizontal direction in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids has been studied using a low dimensional model. The model shows the onset of convection (primary instability) in the form of two dimensional stationary rolls in the absence of magnetic field, when the Rayleigh number $R$ is raised above a critical value $R_c$. The flow becomes three dimensional at slightly higher values of Rayleigh number via wavy instability. These wavy rolls become chaotic for slightly higher values of $R$ in low-Prandtl-number ($P_r$) fl…
To understand turbulent convection at very high Rayleigh numbers typical of natural phenomena, computational studies in slender cells are an option if the needed resources have to be optimized within available limits. However, the accompanying horizontal confinement affects some properties of the flow. Here, we explore the characteristics of turbulent fluctuations in the velocity and temperature fields in a cylindrical convection cell of aspect ratio 0.1 by varying the Prandtl number $Pr$ between 0.1 and 200 at a fixed Rayleigh number $Ra = 3 \times 10^{10}$, and find that the fluctuations wea…
We present numerical simulations of three-dimensional thermal convective flows in a cubic cell at high Rayleigh number using thermal lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. The thermal LB model is based on double distribution function approach, which consists of a D3Q19 model for the Navier-Stokes equations to simulate fluid flows and a D3Q7 model for the convection-diffusion equation to simulate heat transfer. Relaxation parameters are adjusted to achieve the isotropy of the fourth-order error term in the thermal LB model. Two types of thermal convective flows are considered: one is laminar thermal co…
Effects of a uniform magnetic field on homoclinic bifurcations in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a fluid of Prandtl number $Pr = 0.01$ are investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS). A uniform magnetic field is applied either in the vertical or in the horizontal direction. For a weak vertical magnetic field, the possibilities of both forward and backward homoclinic bifurcations are observed leading to a spontaneous merging of two limit cycles into one as well as a spontaneous breaking of a limit cycle into two for lower values of the Chandrasekhar's number ($Q\leq 5$). A slightly str…
A convection-driven multiscale dynamo model is developed in the limit of low Rossby number for the plane layer geometry in which the gravity and rotation vectors are aligned. The small-scale fluctuating dynamics are described by a magnetically-modified quasi-geostrophic equation set, and the large-scale mean dynamics are governed by a diagnostic thermal wind balance. The model utilizes three timescales that respectively characterize the convective timescale, the large-scale magnetic evolution timescale, and the large-scale thermal evolution timescale. Distinct equations are derived for the cas…
We study fully compressible convection in the context of plane-parallel, polytropically stratified atmospheres. We perform a suite of 2D and 3D simulations in which we vary the initial superadiabaticity ($ε$) and the Rayleigh number (Ra) while fixing the initial density stratification, aspect ratio, and Prandtl number. The evolved heat transport, quantified by the Nusselt number (Nu), follows scaling relationships similar to those found in the well-studied, incompressible Rayleigh-Bénard problem. This scaling holds up in both 2D and 3D and is not appreciably affected by the magnitude of $ε$.
A Finite-Volume based POD-Galerkin reduced order modeling strategy for steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier--Stokes (RANS) simulation is extended for low-Prandtl number flow. The reduced order model is based on a full order model for which the effects of buoyancy on the flow and heat transfer are characterized by varying the Richardson number. The Reynolds stresses are computed with a linear eddy viscosity model. A single gradient diffusion hypothesis, together with a local correlation for the evaluation of the turbulent Prandtl number, is used to model the turbulent heat fluxes. The contribu…
The dynamics of fluids deep in stellar interiors is a subject that bears many similarities with geophysical fluid dynamics, with one crucial difference: the Prandtl number. The ratio of the kinematic viscosity to the thermal diffusivity is usually of order unity or more on Earth, but is always much smaller than one in stars. As a result, viscosity remains negligible on scales that are thermally diffusive, which opens the door to a whole new region of parameter space, namely the turbulent low Péclet number regime (where the Péclet number is the product of the Prandtl number and the Reynolds num…
Rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection is investigated numerically with the use of an asymptotic model that captures the rapidly rotating, small Ekman number limit, $Ek \rightarrow 0$. The Prandtl number ($Pr$) and the asymptotically scaled Rayleigh number ($\widetilde{Ra} = Ra Ek^{4/3}$, where $Ra$ is the typical Rayleigh number) are varied systematically. For sufficiently vigorous convection, an inverse kinetic energy cascade leads to the formation of a depth-invariant large-scale vortex (LSV). With respect to the kinetic energy, we find a transition from convection dominated states to LSV domi…
Numerical simulation of rotating convection in plane layers with free slip boundaries show that the convective flows can be classified according to a quantity constructed from the Reynolds, Prandtl and Ekman numbers. Three different flow regimes appear: Laminar flow close to the onset of convection, turbulent flow in which the heat flow approaches the heat flow of non-rotating convection, and an intermediate regime in which the heat flow scales according to a power law independent of thermal diffusivity and kinematic viscosity.
We discuss two aspects of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) on the basis of high-resolution direct numerical simulations in a unique setting; a closed cylindrical cell of aspect ratio of one. First, we present a comprehensive comparison of statistical quantities such as energy dissipation rates and boundary layer thickness scales. Data are used from three simulation run series at Prandtl numbers $Pr$ that cover two orders of magnitude. In contrast to most previous studies in RBC the focus of the present work is on convective turbulence at very low Prandtl numbers including $Pr=0.021$ …
Patterns of convection in internally heated, self-gravitating rotating spherical fluid shells are investigated through numerical simulations. While turbulent states are of primary interest in planetary and stellar applications the present paper emphasizes more regular dynamical features at Rayleigh numbers not far above threshold which are similar to those which might be observed in laboratory or space experiments. Amplitude vacillations and spatial modulations of convection columns are common features at moderate and large Prandtl numbers. In the low Prandtl number regime equatorially attache…
Magnetic field generation in three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection of an electrically conducting fluid is studied numerically by fixing the Prandtl number at $P=0.3$ and varying the Rayleigh number (Ra) as a control parameter. A recently reported route to hyperchaos involving quasiperiodic regimes, crises and chaotic intermittent attractors is followed, and the critical magnetic Prandtl number ($P_m^c$) for dynamo action is determined as a function of Ra. A mechanism for the onset of intermittency in the magnetic energy is described, the most beneficial convective regimes for dynamo act…
The vectoral wind structure of daytime atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulence is strongly dependent on the balance between shear-driven turbulence production of horizontal fluctuations (driven by winds at the mesoscale), and buoyancy-driven turbulence production of vertical velocity fluctuations (driven by solar heating), characterized by the global instability state parameter $-z_i/L > 0$. In the fully shear-driven neutral limit $-z_i/L \rightarrow 0$, the surface layer is dominated by coherent streamwise-elongated concentrations of negative streamwise fluctuating velocity (low-speed str…
We study the instability of a Bénard layer subject to a vertical uniform magnetic field, in which the fluid obeys the Maxwell-Cattaneo (MC) heat flux-temperature relation. We extend the work of Bissell (Proc. R. Soc. A, 472: 20160649, 2016) to non-zero values of the magnetic Prandtl number $p_m$. With non-zero $p_m$, the order of the dispersion relation is increased, leading to considerably richer behaviour. An asymptotic analysis at large values of the Chandrasekhar number $Q$ confirms that the MC effect becomes important when $C Q^{1/2}$ is $O(1)$, where $C$ is the Maxwell-Cattaneo number. I…
We study rapidly-rotating Boussinesq convection driven by internal heating in a full sphere. We use a numerical model based on the quasi-geostrophic approximation for the velocity field, whereas the temperature field is three-dimensional. This approximation allows us to perform simulations for Ekman numbers down to 1e-8, Prandtl numbers relevant for liquid metals (~0.1) and Reynolds numbers up to 3e4. Persistent zonal flows composed of multiple jets form as a result of the mixing of potential vorticity. For the largest Rayleigh numbers computed, the zonal velocity is larger than the convective…
One prominent feature in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn is the appearance of large-scale vortices. However, the sustaining mechanism of these large-scale vortices remains unclear. One possible mechanism is that these large-scale vortices are driven by rotating convection. Here we present numerical simulation results on rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection at a small Prandtl number $Pr=0.1$ (close to the turbulent Prandtl numbers of Jupiter and Saturn). We have identified four flow regimes in our simulation: multiple small vortices, coexisted large-scale cyclone and anticyclone, l…
We report on a numerical study of turbulent convection driven by a combination of internal heat sources and sinks. Motivated by a recent experimental realisation (Lepot et al. 2018), we focus on the situation where the cooling is uniform, while the internal heating is localised near the bottom boundary, over approximately one tenth of the domain height. We obtain scaling laws $Nu \sim Ra^γPr^χ$ for the heat transfer as measured by the Nusselt number $Nu$ expressed as a function of the Rayleigh number $Ra$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$. After confirming the experimental value $γ\approx 1/2$ for t…
In geo- and astrophysics, low Prandtl number convective flows often interact with magnetic fields. Although a static magnetic field acts as a stabilizing force on such flow fields, we find that self-organized convective flow structures reach an optimal state where the heat transport significantly increases and convective velocities reach the theoretical free-fall limit, i.e. the maximum possible velocity a fluid parcel can achieve when its potential buoyant energy is fully converted into kinetic energy. Our measurements show that the application of a static magnetic field leads to an anisotrop…
Planetary atmospheres are commonly thought to result from the efficient outgassing of cooling magma oceans. During this stage, vigorous convective motions in the molten interior are believed to rapidly transport the dissolved volatiles to shallow depths where they exsolve and burst at the surface. This assumption of efficient degassing and atmosphere formation has important implications for planetary evolution, but has never been tested against fluid dynamics considerations. Yet, during a convective cycle, only a finite fraction of the magma ocean can reach the shallow depths where volatiles e…
Numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are presented for both no slip and free slip boundaries. The goal is to find a criterion distinguishing convective flows dominated by the Coriolis force from those nearly unaffected by rotation. If one uses heat transport as an indicator of which regime the flow is in, one finds that the transition between the flow regimes always occurs at the same value of a certain combination of Reynolds, Prandtl and Ekman numbers for both boundary conditions. If on the other hand one uses the helicity of the velocity field to identify flows nearl…
We present the results of direct numerical simulations of flow patterns in a low-Prandtl-number ($Pr = 0.1$) fluid above the onset of oscillatory convection in a Rayleigh-Bénard system rotating uniformly about a vertical axis. Simulations were carried out in a periodic box with thermally conducting and stress-free top and bottom surfaces. We considered a rectangular box ($L_x \times L_y \times 1$) and a wide range of Taylor numbers ($750 \le Ta \le 5000$) for the purpose. The horizontal aspect ratio $η= L_y/L_x$ of the box was varied from $0.5$ to $10$. The primary instability appeared in the …
The flow of fluid confined between a heated rotating cylinder and a cooled stationary cylinder is a canonical experiment for the study of heat transfer in engineering. The theoretical treatment of this system is greatly simplified if the cylinders are assumed to be of infinite length or periodic in the axial direction, in which cases heat transfer occurs only through conduction as in a solid. We here investigate numerically heat transfer and the onset of turbulence in such flows by using both periodic and no-slip boundary conditions in the axial direction. We obtain a simple linear criterion t…
Results on the Prandtl-Blasius type kinetic and thermal boundary layer thicknesses in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a broad range of Prandtl numbers are presented. By solving the laminar Prandtl-Blasius boundary layer equations, we calculate the ratio of the thermal and kinetic boundary layer thicknesses, which depends on the Prandtl number Pr only. It is approximated as $0.588Pr^{-1/2}$ for $Pr\ll Pr^*$ and as $0.982 Pr^{-1/3}$ for $Pr^*\ll\Pr$, with $Pr^*= 0.046$. Comparison of the Prandtl--Blasius velocity boundary layer thickness with that evaluated in the direct numerical simula…
Zonal flows are often found in rotating convective systems. Not only are these jet-flows driven by the convection, they can also have a profound effect on the nature of the convection. In this work the cylindrical annulus geometry is exploited in order to perform nonlinear simulations seeking to produce strong zonal flows and multiple jets. The parameter regime is extended to Prandtl numbers that are not unity. Multiple jets are found to be spaced according to a Rhines scaling based on the zonal flow speed, not the convective velocity speed. Under certain conditions the nonlinear convection ap…
The scaling theory of Grossmann and Lohse (J. Fluid Mech. 407, 27 (2000)) for the turbulent heat and momentum transfer is extended to the magnetoconvection case in the presence of a (strong) vertical magnetic field. The comparison with existing laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations in the quasistatic limit allows to restrict the parameter space to very low Prandtl and magnetic Prandtl numbers and thus to reduce the number of unknown parameters in the model. Also included is the Chandrasekhar limit for which the outer magnetic induction field B is large enough such that convec…
