The Surprising Transition in Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence Structure from Neutral to Moderately Convective Stability States and Mechanisms Underlying Large-scale Rolls
The vectoral wind structure of daytime atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulence is strongly dependent on the balance between shear-driven turbulence production of horizontal fluctuations (driven by winds at the mesoscale), and buoyancy-driven turbulence production of vertical velocity fluctuations (driven by solar heating), characterized by the global instability state parameter $-z_i/L > 0$. In the fully shear-driven neutral limit $-z_i/L \rightarrow 0$, the surface layer is dominated by coherent streamwise-elongated concentrations of negative streamwise fluctuating velocity (low-speed streaks), while in the moderately convective state ($z_i/L \sim 10$ ) buoyancy generates streamwise-elongated thermal updraft sheets of concentrated vertical velocity fluctuations. Using large-eddy simulation (LES), we study the transition between the neutral and moderately convective states by quantifying correlations and integral scales as a function of $-z_i/L$ created by systematically increasing surface heat flux with fixed geostrophic wind. We discover a surprising sudden transition in ABL turbulence structure at $-z_i/L \approx 0.40$ with dramatic enhancement of streamwise coherence, particularly in the mixed layer, and a sudden change in ABL dynamic response to further increase in surface heating. In the supercritical ABL, continued increase in surface heat flux leads to a maximal coherence state at ($z_i/L \sim 1.0-1.5$) associated with helical large-scale roll structure and exceptionally coherent thermal updrafts, a process driven by two key dynamical effects: (a) a surprising continual increase in streamwise coherence of streamwise velocity fluctuations and shear-driven low-speed streaks and (b) increasing spatial correlation between the coherent low-speed streaks in the surface layer below and in the coherent thermal updrafts with in the mixed layer above.
We consider stability of steady convective flows in a horizontal layer with stress-free boundaries, heated below and rotating about the vertical axis, in the Boussinesq approximation (the Rayleigh-Benard convection). The flows under consideration are convective rolls or square cells, the latter being asymptotically equal to the sum of two orthogonal rolls of the same wave number k. We assume, that the Rayleigh number R is close to the critical one, R_c(k), for the onset of convective flows of this wave number: R=R_c(k)+epsilon^2; the amplitude of the flows is of the order of epsilon. We show t…
We summarize our findings about laterally periodic convection structures in binary mixtures in the Rayleigh-Benard system for positive Soret effect. Stationary roll, square, and crossroll solutions and their stability are determined with a multimode Galerkin expansion. The oscillatory competition of squares and rolls in the form of crossroll oscillations is reviewed. They undergo a subharmonic bifurcation cascade where the oscillation period grows in integer steps as a consequence of an entrainment process.
We study the shape of convective rolls in the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer from Synthetic Aperture Radar images of the ocean. We propose a multiscale analysis with structure functions which allow an easy generalization to analyse high-order statistics and so to finely describe the shape of the rolls. The two main results are : 1) second order structure function characterizes the size and direction of rolls just like correlation or power spectrum do, 2) high order statistics can be studied with skewness and Flatness which characterize the asymmetry and intermittency of rolls respectively. …
We study steady flows that are optimal for heat transfer in a two-dimensional periodic domain. The flows maximize heat transfer under the constraints of incompressibility and a given energy budget (i.e. mean viscous power dissipation). Using an unconstrained optimization approach, we compute optima starting from 30--50 random initializations across several decades of Pe, the energy budget parameter. At Pe between 10$^{4.5}$ and 10$^{4.75}$, convective rolls with U-shaped branching near the walls emerge. They exceed the heat transfer of the simple convective roll optimum at Pe between 10$^{5}$ …
This paper presents a numerical study of three-dimensional laminar mixed convection within a liquid flowing on a horizontal channel heated uniformly from below. The upper surface is free and assumed to be flat. The coupled Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically by the finite volume method taking into account the thermocapillary effects (Marangoni effect). When the strength of the buoyancy, thermocapillary effects and forced convective currents are comparable $(Ri\backsimeq O(1)$ and $Bd=Ra/Ma \backsimeq O(1))$, the results show that the development of instabilities in the fo…
We present results of the study of a turbulent air flow with a large scale circulation in Rayleigh-Benard rectangular convective cell with a heated bottom wall and a cooled top wall. The mean horizontal velocity of the main roll and the mean vorticity of eddy rings are almost aligned in a large part of the flow. The helicity of the mean flow is quite high, and is the source of turbulent helicity. Since helicity of the mean flow and turbulence is quite large, the flow in Rayleigh-Benard convective cell is well suited to study properties of helical turbulence.
A model for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids near onset with rigid horizontal boundaries in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is constructed and analyzed in detail. The kinetic energy $K$, the convective entropy $Φ$ and the convective heat flux ($Nu-1$) show scaling behaviour with $ε= r-1$ near onset of convection, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. The model is also used to investigate various magneto-convective structures close to the onset. Straight rolls, which appear at the primary instability, become unstable with increase i…
We consider a classical problem of linear stability of convective rolls in a plane layer with stress-free horizontal boundaries near the onset of convection. The problem has been studied by a number of authors, who have shown that rolls of wave number $k$ are unstable with respect to perturbations of different types, if some inequalities relating $k$ and the Rayleigh number $R$ are satisfied. The perturbations involve a large-scale mode. Certain asymptotic dependencies between wave numbers of the mode and overcriticality are always assumed in the available proofs of instability. We analyse the…
Turbulent mixed convection in channel flows with heterogeneous surfaces is studied using direct numerical simulations. The relative importance between buoyancy and shear effects, characterized by the bulk Richardson number $Ri_b$, is varied in order to cover the flow regimes of forced, mixed and natural convection, which are associated with different large-scale flow organization. The heterogeneous surface consists of streamwise-aligned ridges, which are known to induce secondary motion in case of forced convection. The large-scale streamwise rolls emerging under smooth-wall mixed convection c…
Buoyancy-thermocapillary convection in a layer of volatile liquid driven by a horizontal temperature gradient arises in a variety of situations. Recent studies have shown that the composition of the gas phase, which is typically a mixture of vapour and air, has a noticeable effect on the critical Marangoni number describing the onset of convection as well as on the observed convection pattern. Specifically, as the total pressure or, equivalently, the average concentration of air is decreased, the threshold of the instability leading to the emergence of convective rolls is found to increase rat…
Since Taylor's seminal paper, the existence of large-scale quasi-axisymmetric structures has been a matter of interest when studying Taylor-Couette flow. In this manuscript, we probe their formation in the highly turbulent regime by conducting a series of numerical simulations at a fixed Reynolds number $Re_s=3.6\times 10^4$ while varying the Coriolis parameter to analyze the flow characteristics as the structures arise and dissipate. We show how the Coriolis force induces a one-way coupling between the radial and azimuthal velocity fields inside the boundary layer, but in the bulk there is a …
We investigate the origin of various convective patterns using bifurcation diagrams that are constructed using direct numerical simulations. We perform two-dimensional pseudospectral simulations for a Prandtl number 6.8 fluid that is confined in a box with aspect ratio $Γ= 2\sqrt{2}$. Steady convective rolls are born from the conduction state through a pitchfork bifurcation at $r=1$, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. These fixed points bifurcate successively to time-periodic and quasiperiodic rolls through Hopf and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations at $r \simeq 80$ and $r \simeq 500 $ respec…
The second entropy theory for non-equilibrium thermodynamics is used to show that the optimum structure or pattern of a time-dependent system corresponds to the maximum entropy. A formula for the total entropy of convective heat flow is derived. The Navier-Stokes equations in Boussinesq approximation for straight roll convection are solved by a Fourier expansion technique. Results for the velocity amplitude are in good agreement with previous computations and experimental measurements. For the spontaneous transitions between straight roll states reported in the literature, it is shown that the…
This work is devoted to the theoretical study of the stability of two superposed horizontal liquid layers bounded by two solid planes and subjected to a horizontal temperature gradient. The liquids are supposed to be immiscible with a nondeformable interface. The forces acting on the system are buoyancy and interfacial tension. Four different flow patterns and temperature profiles are found for the basic state. A linear perturbative analysis with respect to two and three dimensional perturbations reveals the existence of three kind of patterns. Depending on the relative height of both liquids …
We study generation of magnetic fields, involving large spatial scales, by convective plan-forms in a horizontal layer. Magnetic modes and their growth rates are expanded in power series in the scale ratio, and the magnetic eddy diffusivity (MED) tensor is derived for flows, symmetric about the vertical axis in a layer. For convective rolls magnetic eddy correction is demonstrated to be always positive. For rectangular cell patterns, the region in the parameter space of negative MED coincides with that of small-scale magnetic field generation. No instances of negative MED in hexagonal cells ar…
Three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic simulations of shell oxygen burning (Meakin and Arnett 2007) exhibit bursty, recurrent fluctuations in turbulent kinetic energy. These are shown to be due to a global instability in the convective region, which has been suppressed in calculations of stellar evolution which use mixing-length theory (MLT). Quantitatively similar behavior occurs in the model of a convective roll (cell) of Lorenz (1963), which is known to have a strange attractor that gives rise to random fluctuations in time.An extension of the Lorenz model, which includes Kolmogorov damping an…
We investigate the stability and dynamics of natural convection in two dimensions, subject to inhomogeneous boundary conditions. In particular, we consider a Rayleigh-Bènard (RB) cell, where the horizontal top boundary contains a periodic sequence of alternating thermal insulating and conducting patches, and we study the effects of the heterogeneous pattern on the global heat exchange, both at low and high Rayleigh numbers. At low Rayleigh numbers, we determine numerically the transition from a regime characterized by the presence of small convective cells localized at the inhomogeneous bounda…

The perspective of statistical state dynamics (SSD) has recently been applied to the study of mechanisms underlying turbulence in various physical systems. An example implementation of SSD is the second order closure referred to as stochastic structural stability theory (S3T), which has provided insight into the dynamics of wall turbulence and specifically the emergence and maintenance of the roll/streak structure. This closure eliminates nonlinear interactions among the perturbations has been removed, restricting nonlinearity in the dynamics to that of the mean equation and the interaction be…
We investigated the effects of Schmidt number on passive scalar transport in forced compressible turbulence. In the inertial-convective range the scalar spectrum followed the k^{-5/3} power law. For Sc >> 1, there appeared a k^{-1} power law in the viscous-convective range, while for Sc << 1, a k^{-17/3} power law was identified in the inertial-diffusive range. The scaling constant for the mixed third-order structure function of velocity-scalar increment grew over Sc, and the effect of compressibility made it smaller than the classical 4/3 value. At small amplitudes, the PDF of scalar fluctuat…
The validity of the anelastic approximation has recently been questioned in the regime of rapidly-rotating compressible convection in low Prandtl number fluids (Calkins et al. 2015). Given the broad usage and the high computational efficiency of sound-proof approaches in this astrophysically relevant regime, this paper clarifies the conditions for a safe application. The potential of the alternative pseudo-incompressible approximation is investigated, which in contrast to the anelastic approximation is shown to never break down for predicting the point of marginal stability. Its accuracy, howe…
Preferential concentration is thought to play a key role in promoting particle growth, which is crucial to processes such as warm rain formation in clouds, planet formation, and industrial sprays. In this work, we investigate preferential concentration using 3D Direct Numerical Simulations adopting the Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid approach, where the particles are treated as a continuum field with its own momentum and mass conservation laws. We consider particles with Stokes number $St \lesssim O(0.01)$ in moderately turbulent flows with fluid Reynolds number $Re \leq 600$. In our previous work…
