We consider a classical problem of linear stability of convective rolls in a plane layer with stress-free horizontal boundaries near the onset of convection. The problem has been studied by a number of authors, who have shown that rolls of wave number $k$ are unstable with respect to perturbations of different types, if some inequalities relating $k$ and the Rayleigh number $R$ are satisfied. The perturbations involve a large-scale mode. Certain asymptotic dependencies between wave numbers of the mode and overcriticality are always assumed in the available proofs of instability. We analyse the stability analytically following the approach of Podvigina (2008) without making a priori assumptions concerning asymptotic relations between small parameters characterising the problem. Instability of rolls to short-scale modes is also considered. Therefore, our analytical results on stability to space-periodic perturbations are exhaustive; they allow to identify the areas in the $(k,R)$ plane, where convective rolls are stable near the onset. The analytical results are compared with numerical solutions to the eigenvalue problem determining stability of rolls.
We present the results of our investigation on nonlinear overstable rotating magnetoconvection (RMC) in presence of vertical external magnetic field. We focus on the dynamics appearing near the onset of convection by varying the system control parameters, namely, the Taylor number ($\mathrm{Ta}$), the Chandrasekhar number ($\mathrm{Q}$) and the Prandtl number ($\mathrm{Pr}$) in the ranges $750\leq\mathrm{Ta}\leq10^6$, $0 < \mathrm{Q} \leq 10^3$ and $0 < \mathrm{Pr} \leq 0.5$. Three dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the governing equations and low-dimensional modeling of th…
In this paper we investigate two-dimensional (2D) Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulation in Boussinesq fluids of Prandtl number $P = 6.8$ confined between thermally conducting plates. We show through the simulation that in a small range of reduced Rayleigh number $r$ ($770 < r < 890$) the 2D rolls move chaotically in a direction normal to the roll axis. The lateral shift of the rolls may lead to global flow reversal of the convective motion. The chaotic traveling rolls are observed in simulation with {\it free-slip} as well as {\it no-slip} boundary conditions on the velo…
In this paper we present various convective states of zero-Prandtl number Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and a 27-mode low-dimensional model containing the energetic modes of DNS. The origin of these convective states have been explained using bifurcation analysis. The system is chaotic at the onset itself with three coexisting chaotic attractors that are born at two codimension-2 bifurcation points. One of the bifurcation points with a single zero eigenvalue and a complex pair $(0,\pm i ω)$ generates chaotic attractors and associated periodic, quasiperiodi…
We investigate the onset of convective instability and subsequent transitions near it in Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) of electrically conducting low Prandtl-number (Pr) fluids in the simultaneous presence of rotation about the vertical axis and external uniform horizontal magnetic field with free-slip boundary conditions. Both three dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) and low dimensional modeling of the system have been performed for the investigation. DNS results show a plethora of patterns near the onset of convection for weak magnetic field. Most interestingly, the Nusselt nu…
Computer simulations of a compressible fluid, convecting heat in two dimensions, suggest that, within a range of Rayleigh numbers, two distinctly different, but stable, time-dependent flow morphologies are possible. The simpler of the flows has two characteristic frequencies: the rotation frequency of the convecting rolls, and the vertical oscillation frequency of the rolls. Observables, such as the heat flux, have a simple-periodic (harmonic) time dependence. The more complex flow has at least one additional characteristic frequency -- the horizontal frequency of the cold, downward- and the w…
We investigate the origin of various convective patterns using bifurcation diagrams that are constructed using direct numerical simulations. We perform two-dimensional pseudospectral simulations for a Prandtl number 6.8 fluid that is confined in a box with aspect ratio $Γ= 2\sqrt{2}$. Steady convective rolls are born from the conduction state through a pitchfork bifurcation at $r=1$, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. These fixed points bifurcate successively to time-periodic and quasiperiodic rolls through Hopf and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations at $r \simeq 80$ and $r \simeq 500 $ respec…
We investigate instabilities and chaos near the onset of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) of electrically conducting fluids with free-slip, perfectly electrically and thermally conducting boundary conditions in presence of uniform rotation about vertical axis and horizontal external magnetic field by considering zero Prandtl-number limit ($\mathrm{Pr} \rightarrow 0$). Direct numerical simulations (DNS) and low dimensional modeling of the system are done for the investigation. Values of the Chandrasekhar number ($\mathrm{Q}$) and the Taylor number ($\mathrm{Ta}$) are varied in the range $0 < \m…
The onset of convection for spherically invariant Rayleigh-Bénard fluid flow is driven by marginal modes associated with spherical harmonics of a certain degree $\ell$, which depends upon the aspect ratio of the spherical shell. At certain critical values of the aspect ratio, marginal modes of degrees $\ell$ and $\ell+1$ coexist. Initially motivated by an experiment of electrophoretic convection between two concentric spheres carried in the International Space Station (GeoFlow project), we analyze the occurrence of intermittent dynamics near bifurcation in the case when marginal modes with $\e…
A coupled map lattice for convection is proposed, which consists of Eulerian and Lagrangian procedures. Simulations of the model not only reproduce a wide-range of phenomena in Rayleigh-Bénard convection experiments but also lead to several prediction of novel phenomena there: For small aspect ratios, the formation of convective rolls, their oscillation, many routes to chaos, and chaotic itinerancy are found, with the increase of the Rayleigh number. For large aspect ratios, the collective oscillation of convective rolls, travelling waves, coherent chaos, and spatiotemporal intermittency are o…
We describe experiments on B{é}nard-Marangoni convection in horizontal layers of two immiscible liquids. Unlike previous experiments, which used gases as the upper fluid, we find a square planform close to onset which undergoes a secondary bifurcation to rolls at higher temperature differences. The scale of the convection pattern is that of the thinner lower fluid layer for which buoyancy and surface tension forces are comparable. The wavenumber of the pattern near onset agrees with the prediction of the linear stability analysis for the full two-layer problem. The square planform is in qualit…

We present the detailed bifurcation structure and associated flow patterns near the onset of zero Prandtl number Rayleigh Bénard convection. We employ both direct numerical simulation and a low-dimensional model ensuring qualitative agreement between the two. Various flow patterns originate from a stationary square observed at a higher Rayleigh number through a series of bifurcations starting from a pitchfork followed by a Hopf and finally a homoclinic bifurcation as the Rayleigh number is reduced to the critical value. Global chaos, intermittency, and crises are observed near the onset.
We report experimental results on the defect turbulent state of undulation chaos in inclined layer convection of a fluid withPrandtl number $\approx 1$. By measuring defect density and undulation wavenumber, we find that the onset of undulation chaos coincides with the theoretically predicted onset for stable, stationary undulations. At stronger driving, we observe a competition between ordered undulations and undulation chaos, suggesting bistability between a fixed-point attractor and spatiotemporal chaos. In the defect turbulent regime, we measured the defect creation, annihilation, entering…
We investigate numerically magnetic field generation by thermal convection with square periodicity cells in a rotating horizontal layer of electrically-conducting fluid with stress-free electrically perfectly conducting boundaries for Rayleigh numbers in the interval 5100\le R\le 5800. Dynamos of three kinds, apparently not encountered before, are presented: 1) Steady and time-periodic regimes, where the flow and magnetic field are symmetric about a vertical axis. In regimes with this symmetry, the global alpha-effect is insignificant, and the complex structure of the system of amplitude equat…
We investigate a novel bursting state in inclined layer thermal convection in which convection rolls exhibit intermittent, localized, transverse bursts. With increasing temperature difference, the bursts increase in duration and number while exhibiting a characteristic wavenumber, magnitude, and size. We propose a mechanism which describes the duration of the observed bursting intervals and compare our results to bursting processes in other systems.
Motivated by the roll-switching behavior observed in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, we define a Küppers-Lortz (K-L) state as a volume-preserving flow with periodic roll switching. For an individual roll state, the Lagrangian particle trajectories are periodic. In a system with roll-switching, the particles can exhibit three-dimensional, chaotic motion. We study a simple phenomenological map that models the Lagrangian dynamics in a K-L state. When the roll axes differ by $120^{\circ}$ in the plane of rotation, we show that the phase space is dominated by invariant tori if the ratio of swi…
The origin of the power-law decay measured in the power spectra of low Prandtl number Rayleigh-Benard convection near the onset of chaos is addressed using long time numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations in cylindrical domains. The power-law is found to arise from quasi-discontinuous changes in the slope of the time series of the heat transport associated with the nucleation of dislocation pairs and roll pinch-off events. For larger frequencies, the power spectra decay exponentially as expected for time continuous deterministic dynamics.
