We consider stability of steady convective flows in a horizontal layer with stress-free boundaries, heated below and rotating about the vertical axis, in the Boussinesq approximation (the Rayleigh-Benard convection). The flows under consideration are convective rolls or square cells, the latter being asymptotically equal to the sum of two orthogonal rolls of the same wave number k. We assume, that the Rayleigh number R is close to the critical one, R_c(k), for the onset of convective flows of this wave number: R=R_c(k)+epsilon^2; the amplitude of the flows is of the order of epsilon. We show that the flows are always unstable to perturbations, which are a sum of a large-scale mode not involving small scales, and two large-scale modes, modulated by the original rolls rotated by equal small angles in the opposite directions. The maximal growth rate of the instability is of the order of max(epsilon^{8/5},(k-k_c)^2), where k_c is the critical wave number for the onset of convection.

We present an effective thermal open boundary condition for convective heat transfer problems on domains involving outflow/open boundaries. This boundary condition is energy-stable, and it ensures that the contribution of the open boundary will not cause an ``energy-like'' temperature functional to increase over time, irrespective of the state of flow on the open boundary. It is effective in coping with thermal open boundaries even in flow regimes where strong vortices or backflows are prevalent on such boundaries, and it is straightforward to implement. Extensive numerical simulations are pre…
Thermal plumes are the energy containing eddy motions that carry heat and momentum in a convective boundary layer. The detailed understanding of their structure is of fundamental interest for a range of applications, from wall-bounded engineering flows to quantifying surface-atmosphere flux exchanges. We address the aspect of Reynolds stress anisotropy associated with the intermittent nature of heat transport in thermal plumes by performing an invariant analysis of the Reynolds stress tensor in an unstable atmospheric surface layer flow, using a field-experimental dataset. Given the intermitte…
A recently developed so-called explicit algebraic Reynolds-stress (EARS) model is applied to a transitioning atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The simulation describes a diurnal cycle with a deep convective ABL during daytime and an extremely thin and stably stratified ABL during nighttime. The predictions of the EARS model are compared to large-eddy simulations (LES) of Couvreux \emph{et al.}~ (Bound Layer Meteorol 176:369-400, 2020). The model simulation is extended in time in order to study several consecutive diurnal cycles. The EARS model uses the same parametrization and model coefficien…
When representing convective instability mechanisms with the streamwise BiGlobal stability approach, results suffer from a sensitivity to the streamwise domain truncation length and boundary conditions. The methodology proposed in this paper resolves this sensitivity by considering a moving frame of reference. In that frame, the spectrum features discrete eigenvalues whose corresponding eigenfunctions decay exponentially in both the up- and downstream directions. Therefore, the truncation boundaries can be placed far enough that both variations in the domain length and artificial boundary cond…
Astrophysical simulations of convection frequently impose different thermal boundary conditions at the top and the bottom of the domain in an effort to more accurately model natural systems. In this work, we study Rayleigh-Benard convection (RBC) under the Boussinesq approximation. We examine simulations with mixed temperature boundary conditions in which the flux is fixed at the bottom boundary and the temperature is fixed at the top ("FT"). We aim to understand how FT boundaries change the nature of the convective solution compared to the traditional choice of thermal boundaries, in which th…
Rayleigh--Bénard (RB) convection, the flow in a fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above, is used to analyze the transition to the geostrophic regime of thermal convection. In the geostrophic regime, which is of direct relevance to most geo- and astrophysical flows, the system is strongly rotated while maintaining a sufficiently large thermal driving to generate turbulence. We directly simulate the Navier--Stokes equations for two values of the thermal forcing, i.e. $Ra=10^{10}$ and $Ra=5\cdot10^{10}$, a constant Prandtl number~$Pr=1$, and vary the Ekman number in the range $Ek=1.3\…
Steady two-dimensional Rayleigh--Bénard convection between stress-free isothermal boundaries is studied via numerical computations. We explore properties of steady convective rolls with aspect ratios $π/5\leΓ\le4π$, where $Γ$ is the width-to-height ratio for a pair of counter-rotating rolls, over eight orders of magnitude in the Rayleigh number, $10^3\le Ra\le10^{11}$, and four orders of magnitude in the Prandtl number, $10^{-2}\le Pr\le10^2$. At large $Ra$ where steady rolls are dynamically unstable, the computed rolls display $Ra \rightarrow \infty$ asymptotic scaling. In this regime, the Nu…
Convective motions in a fluid layer are affected by its orientation with respect to the gravitational field. We investigate the long-term stability of a thermally-stressed layer of a binary liquid mixture and show that pattern formation is strongly affected by marginal inclinations as small as a few milliradians. At small Rayleigh numbers the mass transfer is dominated by the induced large scale shear flow, while at larger Rayleigh numbers it is dominated by solutal convection. At the transition, the balance between the solutal and shear flows gives rise to drifting columnar flows moving in op…
Stellar evolution models of massive stars are important for many areas of astrophysics, for example nucleosynthesis yields, supernova progenitor models and understanding physics under extreme conditions. Turbulence occurs in stars primarily due to nuclear burning at different mass coordinates within the star. The understanding and correct treatment of turbulence and turbulent mixing at convective boundaries in stellar models has been studied for decades but still lacks a definitive solution. This paper presents initial results of a study on convective boundary mixing (CBM) in massive stars. Th…
This work addresses the effect of travelling thermal waves applied at the fluid layer surface, on the formation of global flow structures in 2D and 3D convective systems. For a broad range of Rayleigh numbers ($10^3\leq Ra \leq 10^7$) and thermal wave frequencies ($10^{-4}\leq Ω\leq 10^{0}$), we investigate flows with and without imposed mean temperature gradients. Our results confirm that the travelling thermal waves can cause zonal flows, i.e. strong mean horizontal flows. We show that the zonal flows in diffusion dominated regimes are driven purely by the Reynolds stresses, always travellin…
Gravito-inertial waves are excited at the interface of convective and radiative regions and by the Reynolds stresses in the bulk of the convection zones of rotating stars and planets. Such waves have notable asteroseismic signatures in the frequency spectra of rotating stars, particularly among rapidly rotating early-type stars, which provides a means of probing their internal structure and dynamics. They can also transport angular momentum, chemical species, and energy from the excitation region to where they dissipate in radiative regions. To estimate the excitation and convective parameter …
We consider a classical problem of linear stability of convective rolls in a plane layer with stress-free horizontal boundaries near the onset of convection. The problem has been studied by a number of authors, who have shown that rolls of wave number $k$ are unstable with respect to perturbations of different types, if some inequalities relating $k$ and the Rayleigh number $R$ are satisfied. The perturbations involve a large-scale mode. Certain asymptotic dependencies between wave numbers of the mode and overcriticality are always assumed in the available proofs of instability. We analyse the…
We present three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of internal waves excited by turbulent convection in a self-consistent, Boussinesq and Cartesian model of convective--stably-stratified fluids. We demonstrate that in the limit of large Rayleigh number ($Ra\in [4\times 10^7,10^9]$) and large stratification (Brunt-Väisälä frequencies $f_N \gg f_c$, where $f_c$ is the convective frequency), simulations are in good agreement with a theory that assumes waves are generated by Reynolds stresses due to eddies in the turbulent region (Lecoanet \& Quataert 2013 MNRAS 430 (3) 2363-2376). Specific…
We consider stagnation point flow away from a wall for creeping flow of dilute polymer solutions. For a simplified flow geometry, we explicitly show that a narrow region of strong polymer extension (a birefringent strand) forms downstream of the stagnation point in the UCM model and extensions, like the FENE-P model. These strands are associated with the existence of an essential singularity in the stresses, which is induced by the fact that the stagnation point makes the convective term in the constitutive equation into a singular point. We argue that the mechanism is quite general, so that a…
We investigate the stability of the steady convective flow in a plane tilted layer with ideal thermal conductivity of solid boundaries in the presence of uniform longitudinal temperature gradient. Analytically found the stability boundary with respect to the long-wave perturbations, find the critical Grashof number for the most dangerous among them of even spiral perturbation.
Numerical simulations of 3D, rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are performed using an asymptotic quasi-geostrophic model that incorporates the effects of no-slip boundaries through (i) parameterized Ekman pumping boundary conditions, and (ii) a thermal wind boundary layer that regularizes the enhanced thermal fluctuations induced by pumping. The fidelity of the model, obtained by an asymptotic reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations that implicitly enforces a pointwise geostrophic balance, is explored for the first time by comparisons of simulations against the findings of direct nu…
Gravito-inertial waves can be excited at the interface of convective and radiative regions and by the Reynolds stresses in the bulk of the convection zone. The magnitude of their energy flux will therefore vary with the properties of the convection. To assess how convection changes with rotation, a simplified local monomodal model for rotating convection is presented that provides the magnitude of the rms velocity, degree of superadiabaticity, and characteristic length scale as a function of the convective Rossby number as well as with thermal and viscous diffusivities. In the context of this …
We perform experimental study of turbulent transport of nanoparticles in convective turbulence with the Rayleigh number $\sim 10^8$ in the air flow. We measure temperature field in many locations by a temperature probe equipped with 11 E-thermocouples. Nanoparticles of the size $\sim 70$ nm in diameter are produced by Advanced Electrospray Aerosol Generator. To determine the number density of nanoparticles, we use Condensation Particle Counter. We demonstrate that the joint action of turbulent effects (which are important in the core flow) and molecular effects (which are essential near the bo…
We investigate the influence of the thermal properties of the boundaries in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection on analytical bounds on convective heat transport. Using the Doering-Constantin background flow method, we systematically formulate a bounding principle on the Nusselt-Rayleigh number relationship for general mixed thermal boundary conditions of constant Biot number ηwhich continuously interpolates between the previously studied fixed temperature ($η= 0$) and fixed flux ($η= \infty$) cases, and derive explicit asymptotic and rigorous bounds. Introducing a control parameter R as a me…
A numerical model was developed for flows involving an interface between a homogenous fluid and a porous medium. The numerical model is based on the finite volume method with body-fitted and multi-block grids. The Darcy-Forchheimer extended model is used to govern the flow in the porous medium region. At its interface, a shear stress jump was imposed, together with a continuity of normal stress. Furthermore, the effect of the jump condition on the diffusive flux is considered, additional to that on the convective part which has been usually considered. Numerical results of three flow configura…
A model for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection in low-Prandtl-number fluids near onset with rigid horizontal boundaries in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is constructed and analyzed in detail. The kinetic energy $K$, the convective entropy $Φ$ and the convective heat flux ($Nu-1$) show scaling behaviour with $ε= r-1$ near onset of convection, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. The model is also used to investigate various magneto-convective structures close to the onset. Straight rolls, which appear at the primary instability, become unstable with increase i…
The solar convection zone rotates differentially, with its equatorial region rotating more rapidly than the polar regions. This form of differential rotation, also observed in many other low-mass stars, is understood to arise when Coriolis effects are stronger than those associated with buoyant driving of the convection. When buoyancy dominates, a so-called antisolar state of differential rotation results, characterized by rapidly-rotating poles and a slow equator. The transition between these two states has been shown to occur when the intensity of these two forces is roughly equal or, equiva…
Most stars host convection zones in which heat is transported directly by fluid motion, but the behavior of convective boundaries is not well understood. Here we present 3D numerical simulations which exhibit penetration zones: regions where the entire luminosity \emph{could} be carried by radiation, but where the temperature gradient is approximately adiabatic and convection is present. To parameterize this effect, we define the "penetration parameter" $\mathcal{P}$ which compares how far the radiative gradient deviates from the adiabatic gradient on either side of the Schwarzschild convectiv…
In this paper non-neutral approaching flows were employed in a meteorological wind tunnel on a regular urban-like array of rectangular buildings. As far as stable stratification is concerned, results on the flow above and inside the canopy show a clear reduction of the Reynolds stresses and an increment of the Monin-Obukhov length up to 80%. The roughness length and displacement height were also affected, with a reduction up to 35% for the former and an increment up to 12% for the latter. A clear reduction of the turbulence within the canopy was observed. In the convective stratification cases…
The orientational dynamics of inertialess anisotropic particles transported by two-dimensional convective turbulent flows display a coexistence of regular and chaotic features. We numerically demonstrate that very elongated particles (rods) align preferentially with the direction of the fluid flow, i.e., horizontally close to the isothermal walls and dominantly vertically in the bulk. This behaviour is due to the the presence of a persistent large scale circulation flow structure, which induces strong shear at wall boundaries and in up/down-welling regions. The near-wall horizontal alignment o…
We study the dynamical regimes of a density-stratified fluid confined between isothermal no-slip top and bottom boundaries (at temperatures $T_t$ and $T_b$) via direct numerical simulation. The thermal expansion coefficient of the fluid is temperature dependent and chosen such that the fluid density is maximum at the inversion temperature $T_b>T_i>T_t$. Thus, the lower layer of the fluid is convectively unstable while the upper layer is stably stratified. We show that the characteristics of the convection change significantly depending on the degree of stratification of the stable layer. For s…
We find three types of steady solutions and remarkable flow pattern transitions between them in a two-dimensional wavy-walled channel for low to moderate Reynolds (Re) and Weissenberg (Wi) numbers using direct numerical simulations with spectral element method. The solutions are called "convective", "transition", and "elastic" in ascending order of Wi. In the convective region in the Re-Wi parameter space, the convective effect and the pressure gradient balance on average. As Wi increases, the elastic effect becomes suddenly comparable and the first transition sets in. Through the transition, …
Stellar evolution models calculate convective boundaries using either the Schwarzschild or Ledoux criterion, but confusion remains regarding which criterion to use. Here we present a 3D hydrodynamical simulation of a convection zone and adjacent radiative zone, including both thermal and compositional buoyancy forces. As expected, regions which are unstable according to the Ledoux criterion are convective. Initially, the radiative zone adjacent to the convection zone is Schwarzschild-unstable but Ledoux-stable due to a composition gradient. Over many convective overturn timescales the convecti…
This work reviews basic features of both Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection and internally heated (IH) convection, along with findings on IH convection from laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In the first chapter, six canonical models of convection are described: three configurations of IH convection driven by constant and uniform volumetric heating, and three configurations of RB convection driven by the boundary conditions. The IH models are distinguished by differing pairs of thermal boundary conditions: top and bottom boundaries of equal temperature, an insulating bottom with h…
The basic stationary buoyant flow in a vertical annular porous passage induced by a boundary temperature difference is investigated. The vertical cylindrical boundaries are considered both isothermal and permeable to external fluid reservoirs. There exists a stationary parallel velocity field with a zero flow rate and pure conduction heat transfer. Its linear stability is analysed with normal mode perturbations of the pressure and temperature fields. The transition to convective instability is caused by the basic horizontal temperature gradient. Hence, its nature differs from that of the usual…
Rigorous upper limits on the vertical heat transport in two dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection between stress-free isothermal boundaries are derived from the Boussinesq approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The Nusselt number Nu is bounded in terms of the Rayleigh number Ra according to $Nu \leq 0.2295 Ra^{5/12}$ uniformly in the Prandtl number Pr. This Nusselt number scaling challenges some theoretical arguments regarding the asymptotic high Rayleigh number heat transport by turbulent convection.
Stellar convection is a non-local process responsible for the transport of heat and chemical species. It can lead to enhanced mixing through convective overshooting and excitation of internal gravity waves (IGWs) at convective boundaries. The relationship between these processes is still not well understood and requires global hydrodynamic simulations to capture the important large-scale dynamics. The steep stratification in stellar interiors suggests that the radial extent of such simulations can affect the convection dynamics, the IGWs in the stably stratified radiative zone, and the depth o…
Turbulent convection is thought to act as an effective viscosity ($ν_E$) in damping tidal flows in stars and giant planets. However, the efficiency of this mechanism has long been debated, particularly in the regime of fast tides, when the tidal frequency ($ω$) exceeds the turnover frequency of the dominant convective eddies ($ω_c$). We present the results of hydrodynamical simulations to study the interaction between tidal flows and convection in a small patch of a convection zone. These simulations build upon our prior work by simulating more turbulent convection in larger horizontal boxes, …
