Rigorous upper limits on the vertical heat transport in two dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection between stress-free isothermal boundaries are derived from the Boussinesq approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The Nusselt number Nu is bounded in terms of the Rayleigh number Ra according to $Nu \leq 0.2295 Ra^{5/12}$ uniformly in the Prandtl number Pr. This Nusselt number scaling challenges some theoretical arguments regarding the asymptotic high Rayleigh number heat transport by turbulent convection.
We study two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection with Navier-slip, fixed temperature boundary conditions and establish bounds on the Nusselt number. As the slip-length varies with Rayleigh number $\rm{Ra}$, this estimate interpolates between the Whitehead-Doering bound by $\rm{Ra}^{\frac{5}{12}}$ for free-slip conditions [13] and the classical Doering-Constantin $\rm{Ra}^{\frac{1}{2}}$ bound [4].
We prove the first rigorous bound on the heat transfer for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection of finite-Prandtl-number fluids between free-slip boundaries with an imposed heat flux. Using the auxiliary functional method with a quadratic functional, which is equivalent to the background method, we prove that the Nusselt number $Nu$ is bounded by $Nu \leq 0.5999 R^{1/3}$ uniformly in the Prandtl number, where $R$ is the Rayleigh number based on the imposed heat flux. In terms of the Rayleigh number based on the mean vertical temperature drop, $Ra$, we obtain $Nu \leq 0.4646 Ra^{1/2}$. …
The claim by He et al. [Physical Review Letters 108, 024502 (2012)] that their experiment reached the 'ultimate' regime of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is not justified by their data.
In this contribution we have briefly introduced the problem of turbulent thermal convection with a particular look at its transition to the ultimate regime and the resolution requirements needed for the direct numerical simulation of this flow.
This work is equivalent to that in {\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 123}, 259401 (2019), however, Physical Review Letters prohibited reference to the additional two points in the analysis published by Zhu et al., in {\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 123}, 259402 (2019).
Numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are presented for both no slip and free slip boundaries. The goal is to find a criterion distinguishing convective flows dominated by the Coriolis force from those nearly unaffected by rotation. If one uses heat transport as an indicator of which regime the flow is in, one finds that the transition between the flow regimes always occurs at the same value of a certain combination of Reynolds, Prandtl and Ekman numbers for both boundary conditions. If on the other hand one uses the helicity of the velocity field to identify flows nearl…
We report on experimental determinations of the temperature field in the interior (bulk) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for a cylindrical sample with aspect ratio (diameter over height) of 0.50, both in the classical and in the ultimate state. The Prandtl number was close to 0.8. We find a "logarithmic layer" in which the temperature varies as A*ln(z/L) + B with the distance z from the bottom plate of the sample. The amplitude A varies with radial position r. In the classical state these results are in good agreement with direct numerical simulations (DNS); in the ultimate state there…
Measurements of the Nusselt number $Nu$ and of temperature variations $ΔT_b$ in the bulk fluid are reported for turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection of a cylindrical sample. They cover the Rayleigh-number range $10^{9} \alt Ra \alt 3\times 10^{14}$ using He (Prandtl number $Pr = 0.67$), N$_2$ ($Pr = 0.72$) and SF$_6$ ($Pr = 0.79$ to 0.84) at pressures up to 15 bars and near-ambient temperatures. The sample had a height $L=2.24$m and diameter $D = 1.12$m and was located in a new High-Pressure Convection Facility (HPCF) at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen,…
Numerical simulations of 3D, rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are performed using an asymptotic quasi-geostrophic model that incorporates the effects of no-slip boundaries through (i) parameterized Ekman pumping boundary conditions, and (ii) a thermal wind boundary layer that regularizes the enhanced thermal fluctuations induced by pumping. The fidelity of the model, obtained by an asymptotic reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations that implicitly enforces a pointwise geostrophic balance, is explored for the first time by comparisons of simulations against the findings of direct nu…
The central open question about Rayleigh--Bénard convection -- buoyancy-driven flow in a fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above -- is how vertical heat flux depends on the imposed temperature gradient in the strongly nonlinear regime where the flows are typically turbulent. The quantitative challenge is to determine how the Nusselt number $Nu$ depends on the Rayleigh number $Ra$ in the $Ra\to\infty$ limit for fluids of fixed finite Prandtl number $Pr$ in fixed spatial domains. Laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, and analysis of Rayleigh's mathematical model have yet to …
Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection with free-slip plates and horizontally periodic boundary conditions is investigated using direct numerical simulations. Two configurations are considered, one is two-dimension (2D) RB convection and the other one three-dimension (3D) RB convection with a rotating axis parallel to the plate. We explore the parameter range of Rayleigh numbers Ra from $10^7 to $10^9$ and Prandtl numbers $Pr$ from $1$ to $100$. We show that zonal flow, which was observed, for example, by Goluskin \emph{et al}. \emph{J. Fluid. Mech.} 759, 360-385 (2014) for $Γ=2$, is only stable when…
The effect of various velocity boundary condition is studied in two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection. Combinations of no-slip, stress-free and periodic boundary conditions are used on both the sidewalls and the horizontal plates. For the studied Rayleigh numbers Ra between $10^8$ and $10^{11}$ the heat transport is lower for $Γ= 0.33$ than for $Γ= 1$ in case of no-slip sidewalls. This is surprisingly opposite for stress-free sidewalls, where the heat transport increases for lower aspect-ratio. In wider cells the aspect-ratio dependence is observed to disappear for $\text{Ra} \ge 10^{10}$…
In this paper we investigate two-dimensional (2D) Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulation in Boussinesq fluids of Prandtl number $P = 6.8$ confined between thermally conducting plates. We show through the simulation that in a small range of reduced Rayleigh number $r$ ($770 < r < 890$) the 2D rolls move chaotically in a direction normal to the roll axis. The lateral shift of the rolls may lead to global flow reversal of the convective motion. The chaotic traveling rolls are observed in simulation with {\it free-slip} as well as {\it no-slip} boundary conditions on the velo…
The possible transition to the so-called ultimate regime, wherein both the bulk and the boundary layers are turbulent, has been an outstanding issue in thermal convection, since the seminal work by Kraichnan [Phys. Fluids 5, 1374 (1962)]. Yet, when this transition takes place and how the local flow induces it is not fully understood. Here, by performing two-dimensional simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence covering six decades in Rayleigh number Ra up to $10^{14}$ for Prandtl number Pr $=1$, for the first time in numerical simulations we find the transition to the ultimate regime, namely a…
We present the adaptation to non--free boundary conditions of a pseudospectral method based on the (complex) Fourier transform. The method is applied to the numerical integration of the Oberbeck--Boussinesq equations in a Rayleigh--Bénard cell with no-slip boundary conditions for velocity and Dirichlet boundary conditions for temperature. We show the first results of a 2D numerical simulation of dry air convection at high Rayleigh number ($R\sim10^9$). These results are the basis for the later study, by the same method, of wet convection in a solar still.
In most results concerning bounds on the heat transport in the Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem no-slip boundary conditions for the velocity field are assumed. Nevertheless it is debatable, whether these boundary conditions reflect the behavior of the fluid at the boundary. This problem is important in theoretical fluid mechanics as well as in industrial applications, as the choice of boundary conditions has effects in the description of the boundary layers and its properties. In fact, different boundary conditions may inhibit or enhance heat transport. This review presents a selection of co…
A detailed study of the Rayleigh-Bénard convection in two-dimensions with free-slip boundaries is presented. Pseudo-spectral method has been used to numerically solve the system for Rayleigh number up to $3.3 \times 10^7$. The system exhibits various convective states: stationary, oscillatory, chaotic and soft-turbulent. The `travelling rolls' instability is observed in the chaotic regime. Scaling of Nusselt number shows an exponent close to 0.33. Studies on energy spectrum and flux show an inverse cascade of kinetic energy and a forward cascade of entropy. This is consistent with the shell-to…
Boundary layers play an important role in controlling convective heat transfer. Their nature varies considerably between different application areas characterized by different boundary conditions, which hampers a uniform treatment. Here, we argue that, independent from boundary conditions, systematic dissipation measurements in Rayleigh-Bénard convection capture the relevant near-wall structures. By means of direct numerical simulations with varying Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate that such dissipation layers share central characteristics with classical boundary layers, but, in contrast to the…
A Lagrangian fluctuation-dissipation relation has been derived in a previous work to describe the dissipation rate of advected scalars, both passive and active, in wall-bounded flows. We apply this relation here to develop a Lagrangian description of thermal dissipation in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a right-cylindrical cell of arbitrary cross-section, with either imposed temperature difference or imposed heat-flux at the top and bottom walls. We obtain an exact relation between the steady-state thermal dissipation rate and the time for passive tracer particles released at the top …
We report experimental results for heat-transport measurements by turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 1.00$ ($D = 1.12$ m is the diameter and $L = 1.12$ m the height). They are for the Rayleigh-number range $4\times10^{11} \alt \Ra \alt 2\times10^{14}$ and for Prandtl numbers \Pra\ between 0.79 and 0.86. For $\Ra < \Ra^*_1 \simeq 2\times 10^{13}$ we find $\Nu = N_0 \Ra^{γ_{eff}}$ with $γ_{eff} = 0.321 \pm 0.002$ and $N_0 = 0.0776$, consistent with classical turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a system with laminar boundary layers belo…
Previous numerical studies have shown that the "ultimate regime of thermal convection" can be attained in a Rayleigh-Benard cell when the kinetic and thermal boundary layers are eliminated by replacing the walls with periodic boundary conditions (homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard convection). Then, the heat transfer scales like Nu ~ Ra^{1/2} and turbulence intensity as Re ~ Ra^{1/2}, where the Rayleigh number Ra indicates the strength of the driving force. However, experiments never operate in unbounded domains and it is important to understand how confinement might alter the approach to this ultima…
Multiple chaotic and turbulent regimes in Rayleigh-Bénard convection have been studied and classified from the onset of deterministic chaos to the fully developed turbulence using the distributed chaos approach supported by results of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. It is shown that the regimes can replace each other depending on value of the Rayleigh number and location in the convection cell (in the bulk of the flow or in the boundary layers). The inertial-buoyancy and helicity based invariants play crucial role in the formation of the regimes. Transition from the classical…
In turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection, a transition to the so-called ultimate regime, in which the boundary layers (BL) are of turbulent type, has been postulated. Indeed, at very large Rayleigh number $Ra \approx 10^{13}-10^{14}$ a transition in the scaling of the global Nusselt number $Nu$ (the dimensionless heat transfer) and the Reynolds number with $Ra$ has been observed in experiments and very recently in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of two-dimensional (2D) RB. In this paper we analyse the local scaling properties of the lateral temperature structure functions in the BLs of …
The effect of a homogeneous magnetic field on surface-tension-driven Bénard convection is studied by means of direct numerical simulations. The flow is computed in a rectangular domain with periodic horizontal boundary conditions and the free-slip condition on the bottom wall using a pseudospectral Fourier-Chebyshev discretization. Deformations of the free surface are neglected. Two- and three-dimensional flows are computed for either vanishing or small Prandtl number, which are typical of liquid metals. The main focus of the paper is on a qualitative comparison of the flow states with the non…
The corner roll (CR) in the Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection accounts for the behaviors of heat transport and convection flow at the corner. Streamlines of the three-dimensional direct numerical simulations for $10^8<Ra<5\times10^9$ show that CR presents well-defined similarity and multi-layer structure. A stream function for CR is developed by homotopy and the structure ensemble dynamics. The model presents the scaling of Reynolds number of corner roll $Re_{cr}\sim Ra^{1/4}$. Scaling of CR scale $r = 0.77 Ra^{-0.085}$ indicates strong near-wall shearing induced by wind and provides a probabili…
We perform a bifurcation analysis of the steady states of Rayleigh--Bénard convection with no-slip boundary conditions in two dimensions using a numerical method called deflated continuation. By combining this method with an initialisation strategy based on the eigenmodes of the conducting state, we are able to discover multiple solutions to this non-linear problem, including disconnected branches of the bifurcation diagram, without the need for any prior knowledge of the solutions. One of the disconnected branches we find contains an S-shaped curve with hysteresis, which is the origin of a fl…
Turbulent thermal convection is characterized by the formation of large-scale structures and strong spatial inhomogeneity. This work addresses the relative heat transport contributions of the large-scale plume ejecting versus plume impacting zones in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection. Based on direct numerical simulations of the two dimensional (2-D) problem, we show the existence of a crossover in the wall heat transport from initially impacting dominated to ultimately ejecting dominated at a Rayleigh number of $Ra\approx 3 \times 10^{11}$. This is consistent with the trends observed in 3-…
Two-dimensional simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection at $Ra = 5\times10^{10}$ show that vertical logarithmic mean temperature profiles can be observed in regions of the boundary layer where thermal plumes are emitted. The profile is logarithmic only in these regions and not in the rest of the boundary layer where it is sheared by the large scale wind and impacted by plumes. In addition, the logarithmic behavior is not visible in the horizontal average. The findings reveal that the temperature profiles are strongly connected to thermal plume emission and support a perception that parts of …
We report results for the temperature profiles of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in the interior of a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 0.50$ ($D$ and $L$ are the diameter and height respectively). Results from experiment over the Rayleigh number range $4\times 10^{12} \alt Ra \alt 10^{15}$ for a Prandtl number $\Pra \simeq 0.8$ and from direct numerical simulation (DNS) at $Ra = 2 \times 10^{12}$ for $\Pra = 0.7$ are presented. We find that the temperature varies as $A*ln(z/L) + B$ where $z$ is the distance from the bottom or top plate. This is the case in the clas…
We report on the theory of logarithmic temperature profiles in very strongly developed thermal convection in the geometry of a Rayleigh-Benard cell with aspect ratio one and discuss the degree of agreement with the recently measured profiles in the ultimate state of very large Rayleigh number flow. The parameters of the log-profile are calculated and compared with the measure ones. Their physical interpretation as well as their dependence on the radial position are discussed.
Steady but generally unstable solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations are obtained for no-slip boundary conditions and Prandtl number 7. The primary solution that bifurcates from the conduction state at Rayleigh number $Ra \approx 1708$ has been calculated up to $Ra\approx 5. 10^6$ and shows heat flux $Nu \sim 0.143\, Ra^{0.28}$ with a delicate spiral structure in the temperature field. Another solution that maximizes $Nu$ over the horizontal wavenumber has been calculated up to $Ra=10^9$ and its heat flux scales as $Nu \sim 0.115\, Ra^{0.31}$ for $10^7 < Ra \le 10^9$, quite similar to 3D tur…
We establish rigorous upper bounds on the time-averaged heat transport for a model of rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection between no-slip boundaries at infinite Prandtl number and with Ekman pumping. The analysis is based on the asymptotically reduced equations derived for rotationally constrained dynamics with no-slip boundaries, and hence includes a lower order correction that accounts for the Ekman layer and corresponding Ekman pumping into the bulk. Using the auxiliary functional method we find that, to leading order, the temporally averaged heat transport is bounded above as a function of…
We study the stability of steady convection rolls in 2D Rayleigh--Bénard convection with free-slip boundaries and horizontal periodicity over twelve orders of magnitude in the Prandtl number $(10^{-6} \leq Pr \leq 10^6)$ and five orders of magnitude in the Rayleigh number $(8π^4 < Ra \leq 3 \times 10^7)$. The analysis is facilitated by partitioning our modal expansion into so-called even and odd modes. With aspect ratio $Γ= 2$, we observe that zonal modes (with horizontal wavenumber equal to zero) can emerge only once the steady convection roll state consisting of even modes only becomes unsta…
We analyse the nonlinear dynamics of the large scale flow in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a two-dimensional, rectangular geometry of aspect ratio $Γ$. We impose periodic and free-slip boundary conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions, respectively. As Rayleigh number Ra increases, a large scale zonal flow dominates the dynamics of a moderate Prandtl number fluid. At high Ra, in the turbulent regime, transitions are seen in the probability density function (PDF) of the largest scale mode. For $Γ= 2$, the PDF first transitions from a Gaussian to a trimodal behaviour, signifying the …
We report experimental results for heat-transport measurements, in the form of the Nusselt number \Nu, by turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 0.50$ ($D = 1.12$ m is the diameter and $L = 2.24$ m the height). The measurements were made using sulfur hexafluoride at pressures up to 19 bars as the fluid. They are for the Rayleigh-number range $3\times 10^{12} \alt \Ra \alt 10^{15}$ and for Prandtl numbers \Pra\ between 0.79 and 0.86. For $\Ra < \Ra^*_1 \simeq 1.4\times 10^{13}$ we find $\Nu = N_0 \Ra^{γ_{eff}}$ with $γ_{eff} = 0.312 \pm 0.002…

We revisit the optimal heat transport problem for Rayleigh-Bénard convection in which a rigorous upper bound on the Nusselt number, $Nu$, is sought as a function of the Rayleigh number $Ra$. Concentrating on the 2-dimensional problem with stress-free boundary conditions, we impose the full heat equation as a constraint for the bound using a novel 2-dimensional background approach thereby complementing the `wall-to-wall' approach of Hassanzadeh \etal \,(\emph{J. Fluid Mech.} \textbf{751}, 627-662, 2014). Imposing the same symmetry on the problem, we find correspondence with their result for $Ra…
The Rayleigh (Ra) and Prandtl (Pr) number scaling of the Nusselt number Nu, the Reynolds number Re, the temperature fluctuations, and the kinetic and thermal dissipation rates is studied for (numerical) homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard turbulence, i.e., Rayleigh-Benard turbulence with periodic boundary conditions in all directions and a volume forcing of the temperature field by a mean gradient. This system serves as model system for the bulk of Rayleigh-Benard flow and therefore as model for the so called ``ultimate regime of thermal convection''. With respect to the Ra dependence of Nu and Re we …
Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) and Taylor-Couette Flow (TCF) are two paradigmatic fluid dynamical systems frequently discussed together because of their many similarities despite their different geometries and forcing. Often these analogies require approximations, but in the limit of large radii where TCF becomes rotating plane Couette flow (RPC) exact relations can be established. When the flows are restricted to two spatial degrees of freedom there is an exact specification that maps the three velocity components in RPC to the two velocity components and one temperature field in RBC. Using…
Rotating spiral patterns in Rayleigh-Bénard convection are known to induce azimuthal flows, which raises the question of how different neighboring spirals interact with each other in spiral chaos, and the role of hydrodynamics in this regime. Far from the core, we show that spiral rotations lead to an azimuthal body force that is irrotational and of magnitude proportional to the topological index of the spiral and its angular frequency. The force, although irrotational, cannot be included in the pressure field as it would lead to a nonphysical, multivalued pressure. We calculate the asymptotic…
Using direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) under free-slip boundary condition, we show that the normalized correlation function between the vertical velocity field and the temperature field, as well as the normalized viscous dissipation rate, scales as $Ra^{-0.22}$ for moderately large Rayleigh number $Ra$. This scaling accounts for the Nusselt number ($Nu$) exponent to be around 0.3 observed in experiments. Numerical simulations also reveal that the above normalized correlation functions are constants for the convection simulation under periodic boundary conditions…
The dependence of the heat transfer, as measured by the nondimensional Nusselt number $Nu$, on Ekman pumping for rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection in an infinite plane layer is examined for fluids with Prandtl number $Pr = 1$. A joint effort utilizing simulations from the Composite Non-hydrostatic Quasi-Geostrophic model (CNH-QGM) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the incompressible fluid equations has mapped a wide range of the Rayleigh number $Ra$ - Ekman number $E$ parameter space within the geostrophic regime of rotating convection. Corroboration of the $Nu$-$Ra$ relation…
We investigate the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a large box of aspect ratio $Γ=32$ for Rayleigh numbers up to $Ra=10^9$ and at a fixed Prandtl number $Pr=1$. A conditional averaging technique allows us to extract statistics of the LSC even though the number and the orientation of the structures vary throughout the domain. We find that various properties of the LSC obtained here, such as the wall-shear stress distribution, the boundary layer thicknesses and the wind Reynolds number, do not differ significantly from results in confined domains ($Γ\appr…
We investigate the origin of various convective patterns using bifurcation diagrams that are constructed using direct numerical simulations. We perform two-dimensional pseudospectral simulations for a Prandtl number 6.8 fluid that is confined in a box with aspect ratio $Γ= 2\sqrt{2}$. Steady convective rolls are born from the conduction state through a pitchfork bifurcation at $r=1$, where $r$ is the reduced Rayleigh number. These fixed points bifurcate successively to time-periodic and quasiperiodic rolls through Hopf and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations at $r \simeq 80$ and $r \simeq 500 $ respec…
We investigate the dynamics of a fluid layer subject to an imposed bottom heat flux and a top monotonically-increasing temperature profile driving horizontal convection. We use direct numerical simulations and consider a large range of flux-based Rayleigh numbers $10^6 \leq Ra_F \leq 10^9$ and imposed top horizontal to bottom vertical heat flux ratios $0 \leq Λ\leq 1$. The fluid domain is a closed two-dimensional box with aspect ratio $4\leq Γ\leq 16$ and we consider no-slip boundaries and adiabatic side walls. We demonstrate a regime transition from Rayleigh--Bénard convection (RB) to horizon…
We study numerically the melting of a horizontal layer of a pure solid above a convecting layer of its fluid rotating about the vertical axis. In the rotating regime studied here, with Rayleigh numbers of order $10^7$, convection takes the form of columnar vortices, the number and size of which depend upon the Ekman and Prandtl numbers, as well as the geometry -- periodic or confined. As the Ekman and Rayleigh numbers vary, the number and average area of vortices vary in inverse proportion, becoming thinner and more numerous with decreasing Ekman number. The vortices transport heat to the phas…
We performed a comparative study of extraction of large-scale flow structures in Rayleigh Bénard convection using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and {\em Fourier analysis}. We show that the free-slip basis functions capture the flow profiles successfully for the no-slip boundary conditions. We observe that the large-scale POD modes capture a larger fraction of total energy than the Fourier modes. However, the Fourier modes capture the rarer flow structures like flow reversals better. The flow profiles of the dominant POD and Fourier modes are quite similar. Our results show that the Fou…
