The central open question about Rayleigh--Bénard convection -- buoyancy-driven flow in a fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above -- is how vertical heat flux depends on the imposed temperature gradient in the strongly nonlinear regime where the flows are typically turbulent. The quantitative challenge is to determine how the Nusselt number $Nu$ depends on the Rayleigh number $Ra$ in the $Ra\to\infty$ limit for fluids of fixed finite Prandtl number $Pr$ in fixed spatial domains. Laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, and analysis of Rayleigh's mathematical model have yet to rule out either of the proposed `classical' $Nu \sim Ra^{1/3}$ or `ultimate' $Nu \sim Ra^{1/2}$ asymptotic scaling theories. Among the many solutions of the equations of motion at high $Ra$ are steady convection rolls that are dynamically unstable but share features of the turbulent attractor. We have computed these steady solutions for $Ra$ up to $10^{14}$ with $Pr=1$ and various horizontal periods. By choosing the horizontal period of these rolls at each $Ra$ to maximize $Nu$, we find that steady convection rolls achieve classical asymptotic scaling. Moreover, they transport more heat than turbulent convection in experiments or simulations at comparable parameters. If heat transport in turbulent convection continues to be dominated by heat transport in steady rolls as $Ra\to\infty$, it cannot achieve the ultimate scaling.
We report experimental measurements of heat transport in rotating Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection in a cylindrical convection cell with aspect ratio $Γ= 1/2$. The fluid was helium gas with Prandtl number Pr = 0.7. The range of control parameters was Rayleigh number $4 \times 10^9 < {\rm Ra} < 4 \times 10^{11}$ and Ekman number $2 \times 10^{-7} < {\rm Ek} < 3 \times 10^{-5}$(corresponding to Taylor number $4 \times 10^9 < {\rm Ta} < 1 \times 10^{14}$ and convective Rossby number $0.07 < {\rm Ro} < 5$). We determine the crossover from weakly rotating turbulent convection to rotation dominated geos…
In agreement with a recent experimental discovery by Xia et. al. (2009), we also find a sloshing mode in experiments on the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio one. The sloshing mode has the same frequency as the torsional oscillation discovered by Funfschilling and Ahlers (2004). We show that both modes can be described by an extension of a model developed previously [Brown and Ahlers (2008)] which consists of permitting a lateral displacement of the LSC circulation plane away from the vertical center line of the sample…
We experimentally test the effects of tilting a turbulent Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection cell on the dynamics of the large-scale circulation (LSC) orientation $θ_0$. The probability distribution of $θ_0$ is measured, and used to obtain a tilt-induced potential acting on $θ_0$, which is used in a low-dimensional model of diffusion of $θ_0$ in a potential. The form of the potential is sinusoidal in $θ_0$, and linear in tilt angle for small tilt angles, which is explained by a simple geometric model of the vector direction of the mean buoyancy force acting on the LSC. However, the magnitude of the …
We report Particle Image Velocimetry of the Large Scale Circulation and the viscous boundary layer in turbulent thermal convection. We use two parallelepipedic Rayleigh-B{é}nard cells with a top smooth plate. The first one has a rough bottom plate and the second one has a smooth one so we compare the rough-smooth and the smooth-smooth configurations. The dimensions of the cell allow to consider a bi-dimensional mean flow. Lots of previous heat flux measurements have shown a Nusselt--Rayleigh regime transition corresponding to an increase of the heat flux in presence of roughness which is highe…
We test the ability of a low-dimensional turbulence model to predict how dynamics of large-scale coherent structures such as convection rolls change in different cell geometries. We performed Rayleigh-Bénard convection experiments in a cubic container, in which there is a single convection roll known as the large-scale circulation (LSC). The model describes the motion of the orientation $θ_0$ of the LSC as diffusion in a potential which is predicted as a function of the shape of the cell from an approximate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The model predicts advected oscillation modes…
Results from direct numerical simulations of vertical natural convection at Rayleigh numbers $1.0\times 10^5$-$1.0\times 10^9$ and Prandtl number $0.709$ support a generalised applicability of the Grossmann-Lohse (GL) theory, which was originally developed for horizontal natural (Rayleigh-B{é}nard) convection. In accordance with the GL theory, it is shown that the boundary-layer thicknesses of the velocity and temperature fields in vertical natural convection obey laminar-like Prandtl-Blasius-Pohlhausen scaling. Specifically, the normalised mean boundary-layer thicknesses scale with the $-1/2$…
We prove the first rigorous bound on the heat transfer for three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection of finite-Prandtl-number fluids between free-slip boundaries with an imposed heat flux. Using the auxiliary functional method with a quadratic functional, which is equivalent to the background method, we prove that the Nusselt number $Nu$ is bounded by $Nu \leq 0.5999 R^{1/3}$ uniformly in the Prandtl number, where $R$ is the Rayleigh number based on the imposed heat flux. In terms of the Rayleigh number based on the mean vertical temperature drop, $Ra$, we obtain $Nu \leq 0.4646 Ra^{1/2}$. …
Boundary conditions at a liquid-solid interface are crucial to dynamics of a liquid film coated on a fibre. Here a theoretical framework based on axisymmetric Stokes equations is developed to explore the influence of liquid-solid slip on the Rayleigh-Plateau instability of a cylindrical film on a fibre. The new model not only shows that the slip-enhanced growth rate of perturbations is overestimated by the classical lubrication model, but also indicates a slip-dependent dominant wavelength, instead of a constant value obtained by the lubrication method, which leads to larger drops formed on a …
A series of numerical simulations of Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection in a cubic cavity are conducted in order to examine the structure of the thermal boundary layer in case of mixed boundary conditions. The main goal of the study is the physical mechanism which provides increasing of heat flux with spatial frequency of conducting-adiabatic pattern. Different spatial configuration of conducting plates, including the fractal one, are considered for Rayleigh numbers from $\Ray=10^{7}$ to $\Ray=2.0\times 10^{9}$. We have shown that the temperature boundary layer in case of mixed boundary conditions a…
We study two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection with Navier-slip, fixed temperature boundary conditions and establish bounds on the Nusselt number. As the slip-length varies with Rayleigh number $\rm{Ra}$, this estimate interpolates between the Whitehead-Doering bound by $\rm{Ra}^{\frac{5}{12}}$ for free-slip conditions [13] and the classical Doering-Constantin $\rm{Ra}^{\frac{1}{2}}$ bound [4].
We consider axisymmetric Boussinesq convection in a shallow cylinder radius, L, and depth, H (<< L), which rotates with angular velocity $Ω$ about its axis of symmetry aligned to the vertical. Constant heat flux boundary conditions, top and bottom, are adopted, for which the onset of instability occurs on a long horizontal length scale provided that $Ω$ is sufficiently small. We investigate the nonlinear development by well-established two-scale asymptotic expansion methods. Comparisons of the results with the direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the primitive governing equations are good at …
We have developed novel instrumentation for making Lagrangian measurements of temperature in diverse fluid flows. A small neutrally buoyant capsule is equipped with on-board electronics which measure temperature and transmit the data via a wireless radio frequency link to a desktop computer. The device has 80 dB dynamic range, resolving milli-Kelvin changes in temperature with up to 100 ms sampling time. The capabilities of these "smart particles" are demonstrated in turbulent thermal convection in water. We measure temperature variations as the particle is advected by the convective motion, a…
Rigorous upper limits on the vertical heat transport in two dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection between stress-free isothermal boundaries are derived from the Boussinesq approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The Nusselt number Nu is bounded in terms of the Rayleigh number Ra according to $Nu \leq 0.2295 Ra^{5/12}$ uniformly in the Prandtl number Pr. This Nusselt number scaling challenges some theoretical arguments regarding the asymptotic high Rayleigh number heat transport by turbulent convection.
Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection with free-slip plates and horizontally periodic boundary conditions is investigated using direct numerical simulations. Two configurations are considered, one is two-dimension (2D) RB convection and the other one three-dimension (3D) RB convection with a rotating axis parallel to the plate. We explore the parameter range of Rayleigh numbers Ra from $10^7 to $10^9$ and Prandtl numbers $Pr$ from $1$ to $100$. We show that zonal flow, which was observed, for example, by Goluskin \emph{et al}. \emph{J. Fluid. Mech.} 759, 360-385 (2014) for $Γ=2$, is only stable when…
Numerical simulations of 3D, rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are performed using an asymptotic quasi-geostrophic model that incorporates the effects of no-slip boundaries through (i) parameterized Ekman pumping boundary conditions, and (ii) a thermal wind boundary layer that regularizes the enhanced thermal fluctuations induced by pumping. The fidelity of the model, obtained by an asymptotic reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations that implicitly enforces a pointwise geostrophic balance, is explored for the first time by comparisons of simulations against the findings of direct nu…
The effect of various velocity boundary condition is studied in two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection. Combinations of no-slip, stress-free and periodic boundary conditions are used on both the sidewalls and the horizontal plates. For the studied Rayleigh numbers Ra between $10^8$ and $10^{11}$ the heat transport is lower for $Γ= 0.33$ than for $Γ= 1$ in case of no-slip sidewalls. This is surprisingly opposite for stress-free sidewalls, where the heat transport increases for lower aspect-ratio. In wider cells the aspect-ratio dependence is observed to disappear for $\text{Ra} \ge 10^{10}$…
The Plateau-Rayleigh instability of a liquid column underlies a variety of fascinating phenomena that can be observed in everyday life. In contrast to the case of a free liquid cylinder, describing the evolution of a liquid layer on a solid fibre requires consideration of the solid-liquid interface. In this article, we revisit the Plateau-Rayleigh Instability of a liquid coating a fibre by varying the hydrodynamic boundary condition at the fibre-liquid interface, from no-slip to slip. While the wavelength is not sensitive to the solid-liquid interface, we find that the growth rate of the undul…
We present the adaptation to non--free boundary conditions of a pseudospectral method based on the (complex) Fourier transform. The method is applied to the numerical integration of the Oberbeck--Boussinesq equations in a Rayleigh--Bénard cell with no-slip boundary conditions for velocity and Dirichlet boundary conditions for temperature. We show the first results of a 2D numerical simulation of dry air convection at high Rayleigh number ($R\sim10^9$). These results are the basis for the later study, by the same method, of wet convection in a solar still.
Numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection are presented for both no slip and free slip boundaries. The goal is to find a criterion distinguishing convective flows dominated by the Coriolis force from those nearly unaffected by rotation. If one uses heat transport as an indicator of which regime the flow is in, one finds that the transition between the flow regimes always occurs at the same value of a certain combination of Reynolds, Prandtl and Ekman numbers for both boundary conditions. If on the other hand one uses the helicity of the velocity field to identify flows nearl…
A detailed study of the Rayleigh-Bénard convection in two-dimensions with free-slip boundaries is presented. Pseudo-spectral method has been used to numerically solve the system for Rayleigh number up to $3.3 \times 10^7$. The system exhibits various convective states: stationary, oscillatory, chaotic and soft-turbulent. The `travelling rolls' instability is observed in the chaotic regime. Scaling of Nusselt number shows an exponent close to 0.33. Studies on energy spectrum and flux show an inverse cascade of kinetic energy and a forward cascade of entropy. This is consistent with the shell-to…
Boundary layers play an important role in controlling convective heat transfer. Their nature varies considerably between different application areas characterized by different boundary conditions, which hampers a uniform treatment. Here, we argue that, independent from boundary conditions, systematic dissipation measurements in Rayleigh-Bénard convection capture the relevant near-wall structures. By means of direct numerical simulations with varying Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate that such dissipation layers share central characteristics with classical boundary layers, but, in contrast to the…
Bounds for the poloidal and toroidal kinetic energies and the heat transport are computed numerically for rotating convection at infinite Prandtl number with both no slip and stress free boundaries. The constraints invoked in this computation are linear or quadratic in the problem variables and lead to the formulation of a semidefinite program. The bounds behave as a function of Rayleigh number at fixed Taylor number qualitatively in the same way as the quantities being bounded. The bounds are zero for Rayleigh numbers smaller than the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convection, they…
In this paper we investigate two-dimensional (2D) Rayleigh-Bénard convection using direct numerical simulation in Boussinesq fluids of Prandtl number $P = 6.8$ confined between thermally conducting plates. We show through the simulation that in a small range of reduced Rayleigh number $r$ ($770 < r < 890$) the 2D rolls move chaotically in a direction normal to the roll axis. The lateral shift of the rolls may lead to global flow reversal of the convective motion. The chaotic traveling rolls are observed in simulation with {\it free-slip} as well as {\it no-slip} boundary conditions on the velo…
Steady but generally unstable solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations are obtained for no-slip boundary conditions and Prandtl number 7. The primary solution that bifurcates from the conduction state at Rayleigh number $Ra \approx 1708$ has been calculated up to $Ra\approx 5. 10^6$ and shows heat flux $Nu \sim 0.143\, Ra^{0.28}$ with a delicate spiral structure in the temperature field. Another solution that maximizes $Nu$ over the horizontal wavenumber has been calculated up to $Ra=10^9$ and its heat flux scales as $Nu \sim 0.115\, Ra^{0.31}$ for $10^7 < Ra \le 10^9$, quite similar to 3D tur…
We study the stability of steady convection rolls in 2D Rayleigh--Bénard convection with free-slip boundaries and horizontal periodicity over twelve orders of magnitude in the Prandtl number $(10^{-6} \leq Pr \leq 10^6)$ and five orders of magnitude in the Rayleigh number $(8π^4 < Ra \leq 3 \times 10^7)$. The analysis is facilitated by partitioning our modal expansion into so-called even and odd modes. With aspect ratio $Γ= 2$, we observe that zonal modes (with horizontal wavenumber equal to zero) can emerge only once the steady convection roll state consisting of even modes only becomes unsta…
Recent findings suggest that wall-bounded turbulent flow can take different statistically stationary turbulent states, with different transport properties, even for the very same values of the control parameters. What state the system takes depends on the initial conditions. Here we analyze the multiple states in large-aspect ratio ($Γ$) two-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh--Bénard flow with no-slip plates and horizontally periodic boundary conditions as model system. We determine the number $n$ of convection rolls, their mean aspect ratios $Γ_r = Γ/n$, and the corresponding transport properties…
A challenge in fundamental physics and especially in thermodynamics is to understand emergent order in far-from-equilibrium systems. While at equilibrium, temperature plays the role of a key thermodynamic variable whose uniformity in space and time defines the equilibrium state the system is in, this is not the case in a far-from-equilibrium driven system. When energy flows through a finite system at steady-state, temperature takes on a time-independent but spatially varying character. In this study, the convection patterns of a Rayleigh-B{é}nard fluid cell at steady-state is used as a prototy…
Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) and Taylor-Couette Flow (TCF) are two paradigmatic fluid dynamical systems frequently discussed together because of their many similarities despite their different geometries and forcing. Often these analogies require approximations, but in the limit of large radii where TCF becomes rotating plane Couette flow (RPC) exact relations can be established. When the flows are restricted to two spatial degrees of freedom there is an exact specification that maps the three velocity components in RPC to the two velocity components and one temperature field in RBC. Using…
We revisit the optimal heat transport problem for Rayleigh-Bénard convection in which a rigorous upper bound on the Nusselt number, $Nu$, is sought as a function of the Rayleigh number $Ra$. Concentrating on the 2-dimensional problem with stress-free boundary conditions, we impose the full heat equation as a constraint for the bound using a novel 2-dimensional background approach thereby complementing the `wall-to-wall' approach of Hassanzadeh \etal \,(\emph{J. Fluid Mech.} \textbf{751}, 627-662, 2014). Imposing the same symmetry on the problem, we find correspondence with their result for $Ra…
The dependence of the heat transfer, as measured by the nondimensional Nusselt number $Nu$, on Ekman pumping for rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection in an infinite plane layer is examined for fluids with Prandtl number $Pr = 1$. A joint effort utilizing simulations from the Composite Non-hydrostatic Quasi-Geostrophic model (CNH-QGM) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the incompressible fluid equations has mapped a wide range of the Rayleigh number $Ra$ - Ekman number $E$ parameter space within the geostrophic regime of rotating convection. Corroboration of the $Nu$-$Ra$ relation…
Direct numerical simulations have been performed for turbulent thermal convection between horizontal no-slip, permeable walls with a distance $H$ and a constant temperature difference $ΔT$ at the Rayleigh number $Ra=3\times10^{3}-10^{10}$. On the no-slip wall surfaces $z=0$, $H$ the wall-normal (vertical) transpiration velocity is assumed to be proportional to the local pressure fluctuation, i.e. $w=-βp'/ρ, +βp'/ρ$ (Jiménez et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 442, 2001, pp. 89-117), and the property of the permeable wall is given by the permeability parameter $βU$ normalised with the buoyancy-induced…
In most results concerning bounds on the heat transport in the Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem no-slip boundary conditions for the velocity field are assumed. Nevertheless it is debatable, whether these boundary conditions reflect the behavior of the fluid at the boundary. This problem is important in theoretical fluid mechanics as well as in industrial applications, as the choice of boundary conditions has effects in the description of the boundary layers and its properties. In fact, different boundary conditions may inhibit or enhance heat transport. This review presents a selection of co…
We perform a bifurcation analysis of the steady states of Rayleigh--Bénard convection with no-slip boundary conditions in two dimensions using a numerical method called deflated continuation. By combining this method with an initialisation strategy based on the eigenmodes of the conducting state, we are able to discover multiple solutions to this non-linear problem, including disconnected branches of the bifurcation diagram, without the need for any prior knowledge of the solutions. One of the disconnected branches we find contains an S-shaped curve with hysteresis, which is the origin of a fl…
We consider Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a layer of fluid between rough no-slip boundaries where the top and bottom boundary heights are functions of the horizontal coordinates with square-integrable gradients. We use the background method to derive an upper bound on mean heat flux across the layer for all admissible boundary geometries. This flux, normalized by the temperature difference between the boundaries, can grow with the Rayleigh number ($Ra$) no faster than ${\cal O}(Ra^{1/2})$ as $Ra \rightarrow \infty$. Our analysis yields a family of similar bounds, depending on how various estim…
We establish rigorous upper bounds on the time-averaged heat transport for a model of rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection between no-slip boundaries at infinite Prandtl number and with Ekman pumping. The analysis is based on the asymptotically reduced equations derived for rotationally constrained dynamics with no-slip boundaries, and hence includes a lower order correction that accounts for the Ekman layer and corresponding Ekman pumping into the bulk. Using the auxiliary functional method we find that, to leading order, the temporally averaged heat transport is bounded above as a function of…
Using direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) under free-slip boundary condition, we show that the normalized correlation function between the vertical velocity field and the temperature field, as well as the normalized viscous dissipation rate, scales as $Ra^{-0.22}$ for moderately large Rayleigh number $Ra$. This scaling accounts for the Nusselt number ($Nu$) exponent to be around 0.3 observed in experiments. Numerical simulations also reveal that the above normalized correlation functions are constants for the convection simulation under periodic boundary conditions…
We perform direct numerical simulations of rotating Rayleigh--Bénard convection of fluids with low ($Pr=0.1$) and high ($Pr=5$) Prandtl numbers in a horizontally periodic layer with no-slip top and bottom boundaries. At both Prandtl numbers, we demonstrate the presence of an upscale transfer of kinetic energy that leads to the development of domain-filling vortical structures. Sufficiently strong buoyant forcing and rotation foster the quasi-two-dimensional turbulent state of the flow, despite the formation of plume-like vertical disturbances promoted by so-called Ekman pumping from the viscou…

We analyse the nonlinear dynamics of the large scale flow in Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a two-dimensional, rectangular geometry of aspect ratio $Γ$. We impose periodic and free-slip boundary conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions, respectively. As Rayleigh number Ra increases, a large scale zonal flow dominates the dynamics of a moderate Prandtl number fluid. At high Ra, in the turbulent regime, transitions are seen in the probability density function (PDF) of the largest scale mode. For $Γ= 2$, the PDF first transitions from a Gaussian to a trimodal behaviour, signifying the …
We study numerically the melting of a horizontal layer of a pure solid above a convecting layer of its fluid rotating about the vertical axis. In the rotating regime studied here, with Rayleigh numbers of order $10^7$, convection takes the form of columnar vortices, the number and size of which depend upon the Ekman and Prandtl numbers, as well as the geometry -- periodic or confined. As the Ekman and Rayleigh numbers vary, the number and average area of vortices vary in inverse proportion, becoming thinner and more numerous with decreasing Ekman number. The vortices transport heat to the phas…
We report on a numerical study of turbulent convection driven by a combination of internal heat sources and sinks. Motivated by a recent experimental realisation (Lepot et al. 2018), we focus on the situation where the cooling is uniform, while the internal heating is localised near the bottom boundary, over approximately one tenth of the domain height. We obtain scaling laws $Nu \sim Ra^γPr^χ$ for the heat transfer as measured by the Nusselt number $Nu$ expressed as a function of the Rayleigh number $Ra$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$. After confirming the experimental value $γ\approx 1/2$ for t…
We investigate the dynamics of a fluid layer subject to an imposed bottom heat flux and a top monotonically-increasing temperature profile driving horizontal convection. We use direct numerical simulations and consider a large range of flux-based Rayleigh numbers $10^6 \leq Ra_F \leq 10^9$ and imposed top horizontal to bottom vertical heat flux ratios $0 \leq Λ\leq 1$. The fluid domain is a closed two-dimensional box with aspect ratio $4\leq Γ\leq 16$ and we consider no-slip boundaries and adiabatic side walls. We demonstrate a regime transition from Rayleigh--Bénard convection (RB) to horizon…
We present observations of oscillations in the shape of the temperature profile of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-B{é}nard convection. Temperature measurements are broken down into Fourier moments as a function of $θ-θ_0$, where $θ$ is the azimuthal angle in a horizontal plane at mid-height, and $θ_0$ is the LSC orientation. The oscillation structure is dominated by a 3rd order sine moment and 3rd order cosine moment in a cubic cell. In contrast, these moments are not found to oscillate in a cylindrical cell. This geometry-dependent behavior can be explained by a model…
Rotating spiral patterns in Rayleigh-Bénard convection are known to induce azimuthal flows, which raises the question of how different neighboring spirals interact with each other in spiral chaos, and the role of hydrodynamics in this regime. Far from the core, we show that spiral rotations lead to an azimuthal body force that is irrotational and of magnitude proportional to the topological index of the spiral and its angular frequency. The force, although irrotational, cannot be included in the pressure field as it would lead to a nonphysical, multivalued pressure. We calculate the asymptotic…
We performed a comparative study of extraction of large-scale flow structures in Rayleigh Bénard convection using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and {\em Fourier analysis}. We show that the free-slip basis functions capture the flow profiles successfully for the no-slip boundary conditions. We observe that the large-scale POD modes capture a larger fraction of total energy than the Fourier modes. However, the Fourier modes capture the rarer flow structures like flow reversals better. The flow profiles of the dominant POD and Fourier modes are quite similar. Our results show that the Fou…
