We study the ultraviolet (UV) continuum $β$ slope of a sample of 166 clumps, individual star-forming regions observed in high redshift galaxies. They are hosted by 67 galaxies with redshift between 2 and 6.2, strongly lensed by the Hubble Frontier Fields cluster of galaxies MACS J0416.1-2403. The $β$ slope is sensitive to a variety of physical properties, such as the metallicity, the age of the stellar population, the dust attenuation throughout the galaxy, the stellar initial mass function (IMF), and the star-formation history (SFH). The aim of this study is to compare the $β$ values of individual clumps with those measured on the entire galaxy, to investigate possible physical differences between these regions and their hosts. We found a median value of $β\sim -2.4$, lower than that of integrated galaxies. This result confirms that clumps are sites of intense star formation, populated by young, massive stars, whose spectrum strongly emits in the UV. This is also consistent with the assumption that the dust extinction at the location of the clumps is lower than the average extinction of the galaxy, or that clumps have a different IMF or SFH. We made use of the correlations, discovered for high-redshift galaxies, of the $β$ value with those of redshift and UV magnitude, $M_{UV}$, finding that clumps follow the same relations, extended to much fainter magnitudes ($M_{UV}<-13$). We also find evidence of eight clumps with extremely blue ($β\lesssim -2.7$) slopes, which could be the signpost of low-metallicity stars and constrain the emissivity of ionizing photons at high redshift.
Star-forming clumps dominate the rest-frame ultraviolet morphology of galaxies at the peak of cosmic star formation. If turbulence driven fragmentation is the mechanism responsible for their formation, we expect their stellar mass function to follow a power-law of slope close to $-2$. We test this hypothesis performing the first analysis of the stellar mass function of clumps hosted in galaxies at $z\sim 1-3.5$. The clump sample is gathered from the literature with similar detection thresholds and stellar masses determined in a homogeneous way. To overcome the small number statistics per galax…
We investigate the dust properties in three spectroscopically anomalous galaxies (IRAS F10398+1455, IRAS F21013-0739 and SDSS J0808+3948). Their Spitzer/IRS spectra are characterized by a steep ~5-8 micron emission continuum, strong emission bands from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, and prominent 10 micron silicate emission. The steep ~5-8 micron continuum and strong PAH emission features suggest the presence of starbursts, while the silicate emission is indicative of significant heating from AGNs. The simultaneous detection of these two observational properties has rarely be…
Measurements of the UV-continuum slopes provide valuable information on the physical properties of galaxies forming in the early universe, probing the dust reddening, age, metal content, and even the escape fraction. While constraints on these slopes generally become more challenging at higher redshifts as the UV continuum shifts out of the Hubble Space Telescope bands (particularly at z>7), such a characterisation actually becomes abruptly easier for galaxies in the redshift window z=9.5-10.5 due to the Spitzer/IRAC 3.6um-band probing the rest-UV continuum and the long wavelength baseline bet…
In the early stages of star formation, a protostar is deeply embedded in an optically thick envelope such that it is not directly observable. Variations in the protostellar accretion rate, however, will cause luminosity changes that are reprocessed by the surrounding envelope and are observable at submillimeter wavelengths. We searched for submillimeter flux variability toward 12 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps detected by the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT)-SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE) survey. These observations were conducted at 850 um using the JCMT/…
The ATLASGAL survey provides an ideal basis for detailed studies of large numbers of massive star forming clumps covering the whole range of evolutionary stages. The ATLASGAL Top100 is a sample of clumps selected from their infrared and radio properties to be representative for the whole range of evolutionary stages. The ATLASGAL Top100 sources are the focus of a number of detailed follow-up studies that will be presented in a series of papers. In the present work we use the dust continuum emission to constrain the physical properties of this sample and identify trends as a function of source …
Studying giant star-forming clumps in distant galaxies is important to understand galaxy formation and evolution. At present, however, observers and theorists have not reached a consensus on whether the observed "clumps" in distant galaxies are the same phenomenon that is seen in simulations. In this paper, as a step to establish a benchmark of direct comparisons between observations and theories, we publish a sample of clumps constructed to represent the commonly observed "clumps" in the literature. This sample contains 3193 clumps detected from 1270 galaxies at $0.5 \leq z < 3.0$. The clumps…
The Lyman continuum (LyC) escape fraction is a key quantity to determine the contribution of galaxies to cosmic reionization. It has been known that the escape fractions estimated by observations and numerical simulations show a large diversity. However, the origins of the diversity are still uncertain. In this work, to understand what quantities of galaxies are responsible for controlling the escape fraction, we numerically evaluate the escape fraction by performing ray-tracing calculation with simplified disc galaxy models. With a smooth disc model, we explore the dependence of the escape fr…
We observed 146 Galactic clumps in HCN (4-3) and CS (7-6) with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10-m telescope. A tight linear relationship between star formation rate and gas mass traced by dust continuum emission was found for both Galactic clumps and the high redshift (z>1) star forming galaxies (SFGs), indicating a constant gas depletion time of ~100 Myr for molecular gas in both Galactic clumps and high z SFGs. However, low z galaxies do not follow this relation and seem to have a longer global gas depletion time. The correlations between total infrared luminosities (…
OB star clusters originate from parsec-scale massive molecular clumps. We aim to understand the evolution of temperature and density structures on the intermediate-scale ($\lesssim$0.1-1 pc) extended gas of massive clumps. We performed $\sim$0.1 pc resolution observations (SMA+APEX) of multiple molecular line tracers (e.g., CH$_{3}$CCH, H$_{2}$CS, CH$_{3}$CN, CH$_{3}$OH) which cover a wide range of excitation conditions, towards a sample of eight massive clumps. Based on various radiative transfer models, we constrain the gas temperature and density structures and establish an evolutionary pic…
Most of the hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) was rapidly ionized at high-redshifts. While observations have established that reionization occurred, observational constraints on the emissivity of ionizing photons at high-redshift remains elusive. Here, we present a new analysis of the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) and archival observations, a combined sample of 89 star-forming galaxies at z~0.3 with Hubble Space Telescope observations of their ionizing continua (or Lyman Continuum, LyC). We find a strong (6$σ$ significant) inverse correlation between the continuum slope …
The ultraviolet (UV) continuum slope ($β~$where$~f_λ\proptoλ^β$) of galaxies is sensitive to a variety of properties, from the metallicity and age of the stellar population to dust attenuation throughout the galaxy. Considerable attention has focused on identifying reionization-era galaxies with very blue UV slopes ($β<-3$). Not only do such systems provide a signpost of low-metallicity stars, but they also identify galaxies likely to leak ionizing photons from their HII regions as such blue UV slopes require the reddening effect of nebular continuum to be diminished. In this paper we present …

High-mass stars ($m_* \gtrsim 8 \, M_\odot$) play a crucial role in the evolution of galaxies, and so it is imperative that we understand how they are formed. We have used the New IRAM KIDs Array 2 (NIKA2) camera on the Institut de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30-m telescope to conduct high-sensitivity continuum mapping of $\sim2$ deg$^2$ of the Galactic plane (GP) as part of the Galactic Star Formation with NIKA2 (GASTON) large program. We have identified a total of 1467 clumps within our deep 1.15 mm continuum maps and, by using overlapping continuum, molecular line, and maser paral…
Molecular-line and radio continuum properties of the elephant trunks (ET, pillars of creation) in M16 are investigated by analyzing the 12CO(J=1-0), 13CO(J=1-0) and C18O(J=1-0)-line survey data with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and the Galactic plane radio survey at 20 and 90 cm with the Very Large Array. The head clump of Pillar West I is found to be the brightest radio source in M16, showing thermal spectrum and property of a compact HII region with the nearest O5 star in NGC 6611 being the heating source. The radio pillars have cometary structure concave to the molecular trunk head, and the …
We study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes ($β$) of galaxies at redshifts $8 < z < 16$, using a combination of JWST ERO and ERS NIRcam imaging and ground-based near-infrared imaging of the COSMOS field. The combination of JWST and ground-based imaging provides a wide baseline in both redshift and absolute UV magnitude ($-22.6 < M_{\rm UV} < 17.9$), sufficient to allow a meaningful comparison to previous results at lower redshift. Using a power-law fitting technique, we find that our full sample (median $M_{\rm UV}=-19.3\pm 1.3$) returns an inverse-variance weighted mean value of…
ALMA Resolves 30 Doradus: Sub-parsec Molecular Cloud Structure Near the Closest Super-Star Cluster
We present a recent ALMA observation of the CO(1-0) line emission in the central galaxy of the Zw 3146 galaxy cluster ($z=0.2906$). We also present updated X-ray cavity measurements from archival Chandra observations. The $5\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ supply of molecular gas, which is confined to the central 4 kpc, is marginally resolved into three extensions that are reminiscent of the filaments observed in similar systems. No velocity structure that would be indicative of ordered motion is observed. The three molecular extensions all trail X-ray cavities, and are potentially formed from the c…
Offsets of molecular line emission peaks from continuum peaks are very common but frequently difficult to explain with a single spherical cloud chemical model. We propose that the spatial projection effects of an irregular three dimensional (3D) cloud structure can be a solution. This work shows that the idea can be successfully applied to the Planck cold clump G224.4-0.6 by approximating it with four individual spherically symmetric cloud cores whose chemical patterns overlap with each other to produce observable line maps. With the empirical physical structures inferred from the observation …

N49 (LHA 120-N49) is a bright X-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present new $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2), HI, and 1.4 GHz radio-continuum observations of the SNR N49 using Mopra, ASTE, ALMA, and ATCA. We have newly identified three HI clouds using ATCA with an angular resolution of ~20": one associated with the SNR and the others located in front of the SNR. Both the CO and HI clouds in the velocity range from 280-291 km s$^{-1}$ are spatially correlated with both the soft X-rays (0.2-1.2 keV) and the hard X-rays (2.0-7.0 keV) of N49 on a ~10 pc scale. CO 3-2/1-0 int…
Using a sample of over 70, 000 red clump (RC) stars with $5$-$10$% distance accuracy selected from the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center (LSS-GAC), we study the radial and vertical gradients of the Galactic disk(s) mainly in the anti-center direction, covering a significant disk volume of projected Galactocentric radius $7 \leq R_{\rm GC} \leq 14$ kpc and height from the Galactic midplane $0 \leq |Z| \leq 3$ kpc. Our analysis shows that both the radial and vertical metallicity gradients are negative across much of the disk volume probed, and exhibit significant spatial va…
The central structure in three of the brightest unlensed z=3-4 submillimeter galaxies are investigated through 0.015" - 0.05" (120 -- 360~pc) 860 micron continuum images obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The distribution in the central kpc in AzTEC1 and AzTEC8 are extremely complex, and they are composed of multiple ~200 pc clumps. AzTEC4 consists of two sources that are separated by ~1.5 kpc, indicating a mid-stage merger. The peak star formation rate densities in the central clumps are ~300 - 3000 Msun/yr/kpc^2, suggesting regions with extreme star forma…
The ionization feedback from HII regions modifies the properties of high-mass starless clumps (HMSCs, of several hundred to a few thousand solar masses with a size of ~0.1-1 pc), such as temperature and turbulence, on the clump scale. The question of whether the presence of HII regions modifies the core-scale fragmentation and star formation in HMSCs remains to be explored. We aim to investigate the difference of 0.025 pc-scale fragmentation between candidate HMSCs that are strongly impacted by HII regions and less disturbed ones. We also search for evidence of mass shaping and induced star fo…
We present multi-scale and multi-wavelength data of the Galactic HII region G25.4-0.14 (hereafter G25.4NW, distance ~5.7 kpc). The SHARC-II 350 micron continuum map displays a hub-filament configuration containing five parsec scale filaments and a central compact hub. Through the 5 GHz radio continuum map, four ionized clumps (i.e., Ia-Id) are identified toward the central hub, and are powered by massive OB-stars. The Herschel temperature map depicts the warm dust emission (i.e., Td ~23-39 K) toward the hub. High resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm continuum m…
We present high-resolution (0.17\arcsec $\times$ 0.14\arcsec) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO\,(6-5) line, and 435\um\ dust continuum emission within a $\sim$9\arcsec $\times$ 9\arcsec\ area centered on the nucleus of the galaxy NGC\,5135. NGC\,5135 is a well-studied luminous infrared galaxy that also harbors a Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN). At the achieved resolution of 48 $\times$ 40\,pc, the CO\,(6-5) and dust emissions are resolved into gas "clumps" along the symmetrical dust lanes associated with the inner stellar bar. The clumps ha…
We investigate the UV continuum slope $α$ of a large quasar sample from SDSS DR7. By using specific continuum windows, we build two samples at lower ($0.71<z<1.19$) and higher ($1.90<z<3.15$) redshifts, which correspond to the continuum slopes at longer (NUV) and shorter (FUV) rest wavelength ranges respectively. Overall, the average continuum slopes are $-0.36$ and $-0.51$ for $α_{\rm NUV}$ and $α_{\rm FUV}$ with similar dispersions $σ_α \sim 0.5$. For both samples, we confirm the luminosity dependence of the continuum slope, i.e., fainter quasars have redder spectra. We further find that bot…
Star-forming regions presenting a density gradient experience a higher star formation rate than if they were of uniform density. We refer to the ratio between the star formation rate of a spherical centrally-concentrated gas clump and the star formation rate that this clump would experience if it were of uniform density as the magnification factor $ζ$. We map $ζ$ as a function of clump mass, radius, initial volume density profile and star formation time-span. For clumps with a steep density profile (i.e. power-law slope ranging from $-3$ to $-4$, as observed in some high-density regions of Gal…
A Galaxy with an Extremely Blue UV Slope $β=-3$ at $z=9.25$ Identified by JWST Spectroscopy: Evidence for a Weak Nebular Continuum and Efficient Ionizing Photon Escape?
Synergistic Radiative Transfer Modeling of MgII and Lyα Emission in Multiphase, Clumpy Galactic Environments: Application to Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum Leakers
We quantify the directional dependence of the escape fraction of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) and non-ionising UV-continuum photons from a multiphase medium, and investigate whether there exist directional enhancements in the Ly$α$ equivalent width (EW). Our multiphase medium consists of spherically symmetric distributions of cold, dusty clumps embedded within a hot dust-free medium. We focus on three models from the analysis presented by Laursen et al. (2013). We find that for a Ly$α$ and UV-continuum point source, it is possible to find an EW boost $b(θ,ϕ) > 5 \bar{b}$ in a few per cent of sight lines,…
We present molecular line and dust continuum observations of a Planck-detected cold cloud, G074.11+00.11. The cloud consists of a system of curved filaments and a central star-forming clump. The clump is associated with several infrared sources and H2O maser emission. We aim to determine the mass distribution and gas dynamics within the clump, to investigate if the filamentary structure seen around the clump repeats itself on a smaller scale, and to estimate the fractions of mass contained in dense cores and filaments. The velocity distribution of pristine dense gas can be used to investigate …
We study young star-forming clumps on physical scales of 10-500 pc in the Lyman-Alpha Reference Sample (LARS), a collection of low-redshift (z = 0.03-0.2) UV-selected star-forming galaxies. In each of the 14 galaxies of the sample, we detect clumps for which we derive sizes and magnitudes in 5 UV-optical filters. The final sample includes $\sim$1400 clumps, of which $\sim$600 have magnitude uncertainties below 0.3 in all filters. The UV luminosity function for the total sample of clumps is described by a power-law with slope $α= -2.03^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. Clumps in the LARS galaxies have on avera…
In this paper we use HST/WFC3 observations of 6 galaxies from the DYNAMO survey, combined with stellar population modelling of the SED, to determine the stellar masses of DYNAMO clumps. The DYNAMO sample has been shown to have properties similar to $z\approx1.5$ turbulent, clumpy disks. DYNAMO sample clump masses offer a useful comparison for studies of $z>1$ in that the galaxies have the same properties, yet the observational biases are significantly different. Using DYNAMO we can more easily probe rest-frame near-IR wavelengths and also probe finer spatial scales. We find that the stellar ma…
