We give two extensions of the recent theorem of the first author that the odd distance graph has unbounded chromatic number. The first is that for any non-constant polynomial $f$ with integer coefficients and positive leading coefficient, every finite colouring of the plane contains a monochromatic pair of distinct points whose distance is equal to $f(n)$ for some integer $n$. The second is that for every finite colouring of the plane, there is a monochromatic pair of points whose distance is a prime number.
We show that if $N \geq \exp(\exp(\exp (k^{O(1)})))$, then any $k$-colouring of the primes that are less than $N$ contains a monochromatic solution to $p_1 - p_2 = p_3 -1$.
A first step in investigating colour symmetries of periodic and nonperiodic patterns is determining the number of colours which allow perfect colourings of the pattern under consideration. A perfect colouring is one where each symmetry of the uncoloured pattern induces a global permutation of the colours. Two cases are distinguished: Either perfect colourings with respect to all symmetries, or with respect to orientation preserving symmetries only (no reflections). For the important class of colourings of regular tilings (and some Laves tilings) of the Euclidean or hyperbolic plane, this mainl…
The Four Colour Theorem asserts that the vertices of every plane graph can be properly coloured with four colors. Fabrici and Göring conjectured the following stronger statement to also hold: the vertices of every plane graph can be properly coloured with the numbers 1,...,4 in such a way that every face contains a unique vertex coloured with the maximal color appearing on that face. They proved that every plane graph has such a colouring with the numbers 1,...,6. We prove that every plane graph has such a colouring with the numbers 1,...,5 and we also prove the list variant of the statement f…
In this paper we prove that if an infinite circulant graph with $k$ distances has a perfect $2$-colouring with parameters $(b, c)$, then $b + c \leq 2k + \frac{b+c}{q^t}$ for all positive integers $t$ and primes $q$ satisfying $\frac{b+c}{gcd(b,c)}\vdots q^t$. In addition, we show that if $b + c = q^t$, then this necessary condition becomes sufficient for the existence of perfect $2$-colourings in circulant graphs.
An edge-face colouring of a plane graph with edge set $E$ and face set $F$ is a colouring of the elements of $E \cup F$ such that adjacent or incident elements receive different colours. Borodin proved that every plane graph of maximum degree $Δ\ge10$ can be edge-face coloured with $Δ+1$ colours. Borodin's bound was recently extended to the case where $Δ=9$. In this paper, we extend it to the case $Δ=8$.
There are two possible definitions of the "s-disjoint r-uniform Kneser hypergraph'' of a set system T: The hyperedges are either r-sets or r-multisets. We point out that Ziegler's (combinatorial) lower bound on the chromatic number of an s-disjoint r-uniform Kneser hypergraph only holds if we consider r-multisets as hyperedges. We give a new proof of his result and show by example that a similar result does not hold if one considers r-sets as hyperedges. In case of r-sets as hyperedges and $s \geq 2$ the only known lower bounds are obtained from topological invariants of associated simplicial …
It has been common knowledge since 1950 that seven colours can be assigned to tiles of an infinite honeycomb with cells of unit diameter such that no two tiles of the same colour are closer than $d(7)=\frac{\sqrt{7}}{2}$ apart. Various authors have described tilings using $k>7$ colours, giving corresponding values for $d(k)$, but it is generally unknown whether these are the largest possible for a given $k$. Here, for many $k$, we describe tilings with larger values of $d(k)$ than previously reported.
We present results referring to the Hadwiger-Nelson problem which asks for the minimum number of colours needed to colour the plane with no two points at distance $1$ having the same colour. Exoo considered a more general problem concerning graphs $G_{[a,b]}$ with $\mathbb{R}^2$ as the vertex set and two vertices adjacent if their distance is in the interval $[a,b]$. Exoo conjectured $χ(G_{[a,b]}) = 7$ for sufficiently small but positive difference between $a$ and $b$. We partially answer this conjecture by proving that $χ(G_{[a,b]}) \geq 5$ for $b > a$. A $j$-fold colouring of graph $G = (V,E…
Our aim in this paper is to show that, for any $k$, there is a finite colouring of the set of rationals whose denominators contain only the first $k$ primes such that no infinite set has all of its finite sums and products monochromatic. We actually prove a `uniform' form of this: there is a finite colouring of the rationals with the property that no infinite set whose denominators contain only finitely many primes has all of its finite sums and products monochromatic. We also give various other results, including a new short proof of the old result that there is a finite colouring of the natu…
A clique colouring of a graph is a colouring of the vertices such that no maximal clique is monochromatic (ignoring isolated vertices). The least number of colours in such a colouring is the clique chromatic number. Given $n$ points $x_1, \ldots,x_n$ in the plane, and a threshold $r>0$, the corresponding geometric graph has vertex set $\{v_1,\ldots,v_n\}$, and distinct $v_i$ and $v_j$ are adjacent when the Euclidean distance between $x_i$ and $x_j$ is at most $r$. We investigate the clique chromatic number of such graphs. We first show that the clique chromatic number is at most 9 for any geom…
In a colouring of $\mathbb{R}^d$ a pair $(S,s_0)$ with $S\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ and with $s_0\in S$ is \emph{almost monochromatic} if $S\setminus \{s_0\}$ is monochromatic but $S$ is not. We consider questions about finding almost monochromatic similar copies of pairs $(S,s_0)$ in colourings of $\mathbb{R}^d$, $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and in $\mathbb{Q}$ under some restrictions on the colouring. Among other results, we characterise those $(S,s_0)$ with $S\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ for which every finite colouring of $\mathbb{R}$ without an infinite monochromatic arithmetic progression contains an almost mo…
We study the mixed Ramsey number maxR(n,K_m,K_r), defined as the maximum number of colours in an edge-colouring of the complete graph K_n, such that K_n has no monochromatic complete subgraph on m vertices and no rainbow complete subgraph on r vertices. Improving an upper bound of Axenovich and Iverson, we show that maxR(n,K_m,K_4) <= n^{3/2}\sqrt{2m} for all m >= 3. Further, we discuss a possible way to improve their lower bound on maxR(n,K_4,K_4) based on incidence graphs of finite projective planes.
A k-valuation is a special type of edge k-colouring of a medial graph. Various graph polynomials, such as the Tutte, Penrose, Bollobás-Riordan, and transition polynomials, admit combinatorial interpretations and evaluations as weighted counts of k-valuations. In this paper, we consider a multivariate generating function of k-valuations. We show that this is a polynomial in k and hence defines a graph polynomial. We then show that the resulting polynomial has several desirable properties, including a recursive deletion-contraction-type definition, and specialises to the graph polynomials mentio…
Let P be a set of n points in general position in the plane. We study the chromatic number of the intersection graph of the open triangles determined by P. It is known that this chromatic number is at least n^3/27+O(n^2), and if P is in convex position, the answer is n^3/24+O(n^2). We prove that for arbitrary P, the chromatic number is at most n^3/19.259+O(n^2).
Let $G$ be a plane graph. A vertex-colouring $φ$ of $G$ is called {\em facial non-repetitive} if for no sequence $r_1 r_2 \dots r_{2n}$, $n\geq 1$, of consecutive vertex colours of any facial path it holds $r_i=r_{n+i}$ for all $i=1,2,\dots,n$. A plane graph $G$ is {\em facial non-repetitively $l$-choosable} if for every list assignment $L:V\rightarrow 2\sp{\mathbb{N}}$ with minimum list size at least $l$ there is a facial non-repetitive vertex-colouring $φ$ with colours from the associated lists. The {\em facial Thue choice number}, $π_{fl}(G)$, of a plane graph $G$ is the minimum number $l$ …
A graph is apex if there is a vertex whose deletion makes the graph planar, and doublecross if it can be drawn in the plane with only two crossings, both incident with the infinite region in the natural sense. In 1966, Tutte conjectured that every two-edge-connected cubic graph with no Petersen graph minor is three-edge-colourable. With Neil Robertson, two of us showed that this is true in general if it is true for apex graphs and doublecross graphs. In another paper, two of us solved the apex case, but the doublecross case remained open. Here we solve the doublecross case; that is, we prove t…
Consider the graph $\mathbb{H}(d)$ whose vertex set is the hyperbolic plane, where two points are connected with an edge when their distance is equal to some $d>0$. Asking for the chromatic number of this graph is the hyperbolic analogue to the famous Hadwiger-Nelson problem about colouring the points of the Euclidean plane so that points at distance $1$ receive different colours. As in the Euclidean case, one can lower bound the chromatic number of $\mathbb{H}(d)$ by $4$ for all $d$. Using spectral methods, we prove that if the colour classes are measurable, then at least $6$ colours are are …
Let $α,β,γ\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that given an $r$-colouring of $\mathbb{F}_p$ with $p$ prime, there are more than $c_{r,α,β,γ} p^2$ solutions to the equation $x^α+y^β=z^γ$ with all of $x,y,z$ of the same colour. Here $c_{r,α,β,γ}>0$ is some constant depending on the number of colours and the exponents in the equation. This is already a new result for $α=β=1$ and $γ=2$, that is to say for the equation $x+y=z^2$.
Our point of departure is the following simple common generalisation of the Sylvester-Gallai theorem and the Motzkin-Rabin theorem: Let S be a finite set of points in the plane, with each point coloured red or blue or with both colours. Suppose that for any two distinct points A,B in S sharing a colour there is a third point C in S, of the other colour, collinear with A and B. Then all the points in S are collinear. We define a chromatic geometry to be a simple matroid for which each point is coloured red or blue or with both colours, such that for any two distinct points A,B in S sharing a co…
A vertex colouring $f:V(G)\to C$ of a graph $G$ is complete if for any $c_1,c_2\in C$ with $c_1\ne c_2$ there are in $G$ adjacent vertices $v_1,v_2$ such that $f(v_1)=c_1$ and $f(v_2)=c_2$. The achromatic number of $G$ is the maximum number $\mathrm{achr}(G)$ of colours in a proper complete vertex colouring of $G$. Let $G_1\square G_2$ denote the Cartesian product of graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$. In the paper $\mathrm{achr}(K_{r^2+r+1}\square K_q)$ is determined for an infinite number of $q$s provided that $r$ is a finite projective plane order.
We revisit the coordinatisation method for projective planes. First, we discuss how the behaviour of the additive and multiplicative loops can be described in terms of its action on the "vertical" line, and how this means one can coordinatise certain planes in an optimal sense. We then move to consider projective planes of prime power order only. Specifically, we consider how coordinatising planes of prime power order using finite fields as the underlying labelling set leads to some general restrictions on the form of the resulting planar ternary ring (PTR) when viewed as a trivariate polynomi…
In this paper we obtain a new lower bound on the Erdős distinct distances problem in the plane over prime fields. More precisely, we show that for any set $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p^2$ with $|A|\le p^{7/6}$, the number of distinct distances determined by pairs of points in $A$ satisfies $$ |Δ(A)| \gg |A|^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{149}{4214}}.$$ Our result gives a new lower bound of $|Δ{(A)}|$ in the range $|A|\le p^{1+\frac{149}{4065}}$. The main tools we employ are the energy of a set on a paraboloid due to Rudnev and Shkredov, a point-line incidence bound given by Stevens and de Zeeuw, and a lower boun…
An $L(2,1)$-labelling of a finite graph $Γ$ is a function that assigns integer values to the vertices $V(Γ)$ of $Γ$ (colouring of $V(Γ)$ by ${\mathbb{Z}}$) so that the absolute difference of two such values is at least $2$ for adjacent vertices and is at least $1$ for vertices which are precisely distance $2$ apart. The lambda number $λ(Γ)$ of $Γ$ measures the least number of integers needed for such a labelling (colouring). A power graph $Γ_G$ of a finite group $G$ is a graph with vertex set as the elements of $G$ and two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if one of them is a positive…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this paper we provide a construction which gives four non-Schurian association schemes for every $p\geq 5$ and two for $p=3$. This construction is explained using incidences between points and lines of a biaffine plane and we also provide a pure algebraic model for it with the aid of finite Heisenberg groups. The obtained results are discussed in a more wide framework.
An outstanding folklore conjecture asserts that, for any prime $p$, up to isomorphism the projective plane $PG(2,\mathbb{F}_p)$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_p := \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ is the unique projective plane of order $p$. Let $π$ be any projective plane of order $p$. For any partial linear space ${\cal X}$, define the inclusion number $i({\cal X},π)$ to be the number of isomorphic copies of ${\cal X}$ in $π$. In this paper we prove that if ${\cal X}$ has at most $\log_2 p$ lines, then $i({\cal X},π)$ can be written as an explicit rational linear combination (depending only on ${\cal X}$…
Let $G$ be the unit distance graph in the plane. A well-known problem in combinatorial geometry is that of determining the chromatic number of $G$. It is known that $4\le χ(G)\le 7$. The upper bound of 7 is obtained using tilings of the plane. The present paper studies two problems where we seek proper colourings of $G$, adding restrictions inspired by tilings: Let $H(ε)$ be the graph whose vertices are the points of ${\mathbb R}^2$, with an edge between two points if their distance lies in the interval $[1,1+ε]$. We show that for small $ε$, $0<ε\le \frac{3\sqrt{2}}{4}-1$, we have $6\le χ(H(ε)…
This article studies a generalization of magic squares to finite projective planes. In traditional magic squares the entries come from the natural numbers. This does not work for finite projective planes, so we instead use Abelian groups. For each finite projective plane we demonstrate a small group over which the plane can labeled magically. In the prime order case we classify all groups over which the projective plane can be made magic.

We present a conjecture for the power-law exponent in the asymptotic number of types of plane curves as the number of self-intersections goes to infinity. In view of the description of prime alternating links as flype equivalence classes of plane curves, a similar conjecture is made for the asymptotic number of prime alternating knots. The rationale leading to these conjectures is given by quantum field theory. Plane curves are viewed as configurations of loops on a random planar lattices, that are in turn interpreted as a model of 2d quantum gravity with matter. The identification of the univ…
