We systematically investigated the Ni and Co thickness-dependent perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) coefficient, magnetic domain structures, and magnetization dynamics of Pt(5 nm)/[Co(t_Co nm)/Ni(t_Ni nm)]5/Pt(1 nm) multilayers by combining the four standard magnetic characterization techniques. The magnetic-related hysteresis loops obtained from the field-dependent magnetization M and anomalous Hall resistivity (AHR) \r{ho}_xy found that the two serial multilayers with t_Co = 0.2 and 0.3 nm have the optimum PMA coefficient K_U well as the highest coercivity H_C at the Ni thickness t_Ni = 0.6 nm. Additionally, the magnetic domain structures obtained by Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy also significantly depend on the thickness and K_U of the films. Furthermore, the thickness-dependent linewidth of ferromagnetic resonance is inversely proportional to K_U and H_C, indicating that inhomogeneous magnetic properties dominate the linewidth. However, the intrinsic Gilbert damping constant determined by a linear fitting of frequency-dependent linewidth does not depend on Ni thickness and K_U. Our results could help promote the PMA [Co/Ni] multilayer applications in various spintronic and spin-orbitronic devices.
A new characteristic is observed in the training effect of perpendicular exchange bias. For Pt/Co/Pt/IrMn multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the magnetization reversal process is accompanied by pinned domain wall motion and the asymmetry of hysteresis loop is always equal to zero during subsequent measurements. It is interesting to find that the exchange field decreases greatly as a function of the cycling number while the coercivity almost does not change. It is clearly demonstrated that the training effect of perpendicular exchange bias strongly depends on the magnetization …
Multilayers of Co90Fe10/Pd with different bilayer thicknesses, have been deposited by dc-magnetron sputtering on thermally oxidized Si wafers. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the highly textured crystalline films had columnar structure, while scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy respectively indicated some layer waviness and surface roughness. The magnetic domain structure and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of the Co90Fe10/Pd multilayers were investigated by off-axis electron holography and magnetic force microscopy. The Co90Fe10 layer thi…
We report on the controlled switching of domain wall (DW) magnetization in aligned stripe domain structures, stabilized in [Co (0.44 nm)/Pt (0.7 nm)]$_X$ ($X = 48$, 100, 150) multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The switching process, induced by an external magnetic field, is monitored by measuring the evolution of the in-plane magnetization. % We show that the remanent in-plane magnetization originates from the polarization of the Bloch-type DWs. With micromagnetic simulations, we reveal that the reversal of the DW polarization is the result of the emergence and collapse of hor…
The tunability of Ar+ ion irradiation of Co/Pd multilayers has been employed to create depth-dependent perpendicular anisotropy gradients. By adjusting the Ar+ kinetic energy and fluence, the depth and lateral density of the local structural modification are controlled. First-order reversal curve analysis through X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and conventional magnetometry studies show that the local structural damage weakens the perpendicular anisotropy near the surface, leading to a magnetization tilting towards the in-plane direction. The ion irradiation method is complementary to, and m…
The effect of disorder on the perpendicular magnetoresistance of magnetic multilayers is investigated theoretically. Various kinds of disorder are considered: (i) interface substitutional disorder and (ii) bulk disorder in the various layers and in the leads. The calculations are based upon the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, together with the recursion method for calculating the real-space Green's function.
To address thermal stability issues for spintronic devices with a reduced size, we investigate spin-orbit torque in Co/Pt multilayers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Note that the spin-orbit torque arises from the global imbalance of the spin currents from the top and bottom interfaces for each Co layer. By inserting Ta or Cu layers to strengthen the top-down asymmetry, the spin-orbit torque efficiency can be greatly modified without compromised perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Above all, the efficiency builds up as the number of layers increases, realizing robust thermal stab…
Temperature- and bias voltage-dependent transport measurements of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pd electrodes are presented. Magnetization measurements of the Co/Pd multilayers are performed to characterize the electrodes. The effects of the Co layer thickness in the Co/Pd bilayers, the annealing temperature, the Co thickness at the MgO barrier interface, and the number of bilayers on the tunneling magneto resistance (TMR) effect are investigated. TMR-ratios of about 11 % at room temperature and 18.5 % at 13 K are measured and two well-defined switching fi…
Using a Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope, we compare the ferromagnetic resonance spectra of individual micron-size disks with identical diameter, 1 $m$m, but different layer structures. For a disk composed of a single 43.3 nm thick permalloy (Py) layer, the lowest energy mode in the perpendicular configuration is the uniform precession. The higher energy modes are standing spin-waves confined along the diameter of the disk. For a Cu(30)/Py(100)/Cu(30) nm multilayer structure, it has been interpreted that the lowest energy mode becomes a precession localized at the Cu/Py interfaces. When the…
We report on reversible electric-field-driven magnetic domain wall motion in a Cu/Ni multilayer on a ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ substrate. In our heterostructure, strain-coupling to ferroelastic domains with in-plane and perpendicular polarization in the BaTiO$_3$ substrate causes the formation of domains with perpendicular and in-plane magnetic anisotropy, respectively, in the Cu/Ni multilayer. Walls that separate magnetic domains are elastically pinned onto ferroelectric domain walls. Using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, we demonstrate that out-of-plane electric field pulses across the…
We demonstrate the pumping of phonons by ferromagnetic resonance in a series of [Co(0.8 nm)/Pd(1.5 nm)]$_n$ multilayers ($n =$ 6, 11, 15, and 20) with large magnetostriction and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The effect is shown using broadband ferromagnetic resonance over a range of temperatures (10 to 300 K), where a resonant damping enhancement is observed at frequencies corresponding to standing wave phonons across the multilayer. The strength of this effect is enhanced by approximately a factor of 4 at 10 K compared to room temperature, which is anomalous in the sense that the tempera…
We present an analytical theory to describe three-dimensional magnetic textures in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic multilayers that arise in the presence of magnetostatic interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We demonstrate that domain walls in multilayers develop a complex twisted structure, which persists even for films with strong DMI. The origin of this twist is surface-volume stray field interactions that manifest as a depth-dependent effective field whose form mimics the DMI effective field. We find that the wall twist has a minor impact on the equilibrium sky…
The authors studied an effect of ferromagnetic (Co20Fe60B20 or Fe) layer insertion on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) properties of MgO-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with CoFe/Pd multilayer electrodes. TMR ratio in MTJs with CoFeB/MgO/Fe stack reached 67% at an-nealing temperature (Ta) of 200 degree C and then decreased rapidly at Ta over 250 degree C. The degradation of the TMR ratio may be related to crystallization of CoFe(B) into fcc(111) or bcc(011) texture result-ing from diffusion of B into Pd layers. MTJs which were in-situ annealed at 350oC just after depo-siting bottom CoFe…
We use broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction to investigate the fundamental origin of perpendicular anisotropy in Co90Fe10/Ni multilayers. By careful evaluation of the spectroscopic g-factor, we determine the orbital moment along the out-of-plane and in-plane directions. For the multilayers, we find a direct relationship between the orbital moment asymmetry and the perpendicular anisotropy, consistent with the theory of Bruno [P.Bruno, Phys. Rev. B, 39, 865 (1989)]. A systematic x-ray diffraction study revealed the presence of a trigonal strain as high as 0.7 % i…
Multifunctional materials composed of ultrathin magnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy combined with ferroelectric substrates represent a new approach toward low power, fast, high density spintronics. Here we demonstrate Co/Ni multilayered films with tunable saturation magnetization and perpendicular anisotropy grown directly on ferroelectric PZT [Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3] substrate plates. Electric fields up to +/- 2 MV/m expand the PZT by 0.1% and generate at least 0.02% in-plane compression in the Co/Ni multilayered film. Modifying the strain with a voltage can reduce the coercive f…
Stripe domains are studied in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy films nanostructured with a periodic thickness modulation that induces the lateral modulation of both stripe periods and inplane magnetization. The resulting system is the 2D equivalent of a strained superlattice with properties controlled by interfacial misfit strain within the magnetic stripe structure and shape anisotropy. This allows us to observe, experimentally for the first time, the continuous structural transformation of a grain boundary in this 2D magnetic crystal in the whole angular range. The magnetization reversal pr…
We report on a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in [CoFe 0.4nm/Pd t]6 (t = 1.0-2.0 nm) multilayers fabricated by DC sputtering in a ultrahigh vacuum chamber. Saturation magnetization, $M_s$, and uniaxial anisotropy, $K_u$, of the multilayers decrease with increasing the spacing thickness, with a $M_s$ of 155 emu/cc and a $K_u$ of 1.14$\times 10^5$ J/m$^3$ at a spacing thickness of t = 2 nm. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal that spin and orbital magnetic moments of Co and Fe in CoFe film decrease as function of Pd thickness, indicat…
We systematically investigate the perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in Co$-$Pt/Pd-based multilayers. Our magnetic measurement data shows that the asymmetric Co/Pd/Pt multilayer has a significantly larger perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy compared to the symmetric Co/Pt and Co/Pd multilayer samples. We further support this experiment by first principles calculations on the CoPt$_2$, CoPd$_2$, and CoPtPd, which are composite bulk materials that consist of three atomic layers in a unit cell, Pt/Co/Pt, Pd/Co/Pd, Pt/Co/Pd, respectively. By estimating the contribution of…
We report the experimental observation of magnetic skyrmion-like states in patterned ferromagnetic nanostructures consisting of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt multilayer film exchange coupled with Co nanodisks in vortex state. The magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that depending on the magnitude of Co/Pt perpendicular anisotropy in these systems two different modes of skyrmion formation are realized.
Within the framework of a two-band tight-binding model, we have performed calculations of giant magnetoresistance, exchange coupling and thermoelectric power (TEP) for a system consisting of three magnetic layers separated by two non-magnetic spacers with the first two magnetic layers strongly antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled. We have shown how does the GMR relate with the corresponding regions of magnetic structure phase diagrams and computed some relevant hysteresis loops, too. The GMR may take negative values for specific layers thicknesses, and the TEP reveals quite pronounced oscill…
Perpendicular heterostructures based on a ferrimagnetic Mn2RuxGa (MRG) layer and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer were examined to understand the effects of different spacer layers (V, Mo, Hf, HfOx and TiN) on the interfaces with the magnetic electrodes, after annealing at 350 C. Loss of perpendicular anisotropy in MRG is strongly correlated with a reduction in the substrate-induced tetragonality due to relaxation of the crystal structure. In the absence of diffusion, strain and chemical ordering within MRG are correlated. The limited solubility of both Hf and Mo in MRG is a source of addition…
Ever since its discovery in 1996, ultrafast demagnetization has ignited immense research interest due to its scientific rigor and technological potential. A flurry of recent theoretical and experimental investigations has proposed direct and indirect excitation processes in separate systems. However, it still lacks a unified mechanism and remains highly debatable. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that instead of either direct or indirect interaction, simultaneous and controlled excitation of both direct and indirect mechanisms of demagnetization are possible in a multilayers composed o…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and dynamic magnetization reversal process in [CoFeB $t$ nm/Pd 1.0 nm]$_n$ ($t$ = 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 nm; $n$ = 2 - 20) multilayer films have been studied by means of magnetic hysteresis and Kerr effect measurements. Strong and controllable PMA with an effective uniaxial anisotropy up to 7.7$\times$ 10$^6$ J.m$^{-3}$ and a saturation magnetization as low as 200 emu/cc are achieved. Surface/interfacial anisotropy of CoFeB/Pd interfaces, the main contribution to the PMA, is separated from the effective uniaxial anisotropy of the films, and appears …
Current induced spin-orbit torques have been studied in ferromagnetic nanowires made of 20 nm thick Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using Hall voltage and lock-in measurements, it is found that upon injection of an electric current both in-plane (Slonczewski-like) and perpendicular (field-like) torques build up in the nanowire. The torque efficiencies are found to be as large as 1.17 kOe and 5 kOe at 108 A/cm2 for the in-plane and perpendicular components, respectively, which is surprisingly comparable to previous studies in ultrathin (~ 1 nm) magnetic bilayers. We sh…
We investigate the correlation between roughness, remanence and coercivity in Co/Ni films grown on Cu seed layers of varying thickness. Increasing the Cu seed layer thickness of Ta/Cu/8x[Co/Ni] thin films increases the roughness of the films. In-plane magnetization loops show that both the remanance and coercivity increase with increasing seed layer roughness. Polar Kerr microscopy and magnetic force microscopy reveal that the domain density also increases with roughness. Finite element micromagnetic simulations performed on structures with periodically modulated surfaces provide further insig…
The reversal of magnetic bubble helicity through topologically trivial transient states provides an additional degree of freedom that promises the development of multidimensional magnetic memories. A key requirement for this concept is the stabilization of bubble states at ambient conditions on application-compatible substrates. In the present work we demonstrate a stabilization routine for remanent bubble states in high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [(Co(0.44\,nm)/Pt(0.7\,nm)]$_X$, X = 48, 100, 150 multilayers on Si/SiO$_2$ substrates by exploring the effect of external magnetic fields ($…
A study of the multilayer system MgO/CoFeB(1.1nm)/Ta($t$)/CoFeB(0.8nm)/MgO is presented, where the two CoFeB layers are separated by a Ta interlayer of varying thickness $t$. The magnetization properties deduced from complementary techniques such as superconducting quantum interference magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance frequency measurements and Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy can be tuned by changing the Ta thickness between $t$=0.25 nm, 0.5 nm and 0.75 nm. For $t$=0.5 nm, a ferromagnetic coupling is observed, whereas for t=0.75 nm, the antiferromagnetic coupling needed to constru…
[Co/Ni] multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have been researched and applied in various spintronic applications. Typically the seed layer material is studied to provide the desired face-centered cubic (\textit{fcc}) texture to the [Co/Ni] to obtain PMA. The integration of [Co/Ni] in back-end-of-line (BEOL) processes also requires the PMA to survive post-annealing. In this paper, the impact of NiCr, Pt, Ru, and Ta seed layers on the structural and magnetic properties of [Co(0.3 nm)/Ni(0.6 nm)] multilayers is investigated before and after annealing. The multilayers were depo…
We experimentally investigate the current-induced magnetization reversal in Pt/[Co/Ni]$_3$/Al multilayers combining the anomalous Hall effect and magneto-optical Kerr effect techniques in crossbar geometry. The magnetization reversal occurs through nucleation and propagation of a domain of opposite polarity for a current density of the order of 0.3 TA/m$^2$. In these experiments we demonstrate a full control of each stage: i)the Ørsted field controls the domain nucleation and ii) domain-wall propagation occurs by spin torque from the Pt spin Hall effect. This scenario requires an in-plane magn…
We have studied the magnetic properties of multilayers composed of ferromagnetic metal Co and heavy metals with strong spin orbit coupling (Pt and Ir). Multilayers with symmetric (ABA stacking) and asymmetric (ABC stacking) structures are grown to study the effect of broken structural inversion symmetry. We compare the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy of symmetric Pt/Co/Pt, Ir/Co/Ir multilayers and asymmetric Pt/Co/Ir, Ir/Co/Pt multilayers. First, the interface contribution to the PMA is studied using the Co layer thickness dependence of the effective PMA energy. Comparison of th…
Current induced domain wall (DW) motion has been investigated in a 600-nm wide nanowire using multilayer film with a structure of Ta(5 nm)/Pd(5 nm)/[CoFe(0.4 nm)/Pd(1.2 nm)]$_{15}$/Ta(5 nm)in terms of anomalous Hall effect measurements. It is found that motion of DWs can be driven by a current density as low as 1.44$\times$10$^{11}$ A.m$^{-2}$. The effect of the Oersted field ($H_{Oe}$) and spin transfer torque field ($H_{ST}$), which are considered as effective fields for DW motion, has been quantitatively separated from the dependence of depinning fields on the current. The results show that…

Magnetic lateral multilayers have been fabricated on weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy amorphous Nd-Co films in order to perform a systematic study on the conditions for controlled nucleation of topological defects within their magnetic stripe domain pattern. A lateral thickness modulation of period $w$ is defined on the nanostructured samples that, in turn, induces a lateral modulation of both magnetic stripe domain periods $λ$ and average in-plane magnetization component $M_{inplane}$. Depending on lateral multilayer period and in-plane applied field, thin and thick regions switch indep…

By Monte Carlo simulations in the canonical ensemble, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in Fe/Dy amorphous multilayers. This work has been motivated by experimental results which show a clear correlation between the magnetic perpendicular anisotropy and the substrate temperature during elaboration of the samples. Our aim is to relate macroscopic magnetic properties of the multilayers to their structure, more precisely their concentration profile. Our model is based on concentration dependent exchange interactions and spin values, on random magnetic anisotropy and on the existence of loca…
The magnetization dynamics in nanostructures has been extensively studied in the last decades, and nanomagnetism has evolved significantly over that time, discovering new effects, developing numerous applications, and identifying promising new directions. This includes magnonics, an emerging research field oriented on the study of spin-wave dynamics and their applications. In this context, thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) offer interesting opportunities to study spin waves, in particular, due to out-of-plane magnetization in remanence or at relatively weak …
Stripe states in multilayer systems with perpendicular polarization are investigated by analytical calculations within a general continuum approach, applicable to ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, or ferroelastic nanoscale superlattices. The competition between the long-range depolarization effect and short-range interlayer couplings can stabilize monodomain states and unusual stripe phase ground states with antiparallel polarization in adjacent layers. Geometric parameters of stable stripe domain states and the phase transitions lines between single domain states, aligned and antialigned stripe s…
Element-specific orbital magnetic moments and their anisotropies in perpendicularly magnetised Co/Pd multilayers are investigated using Co L-edge and Pd M-edge angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We show that the orbital magnetic moments in Co are anisotropic, whereas those in Pd are isotropic. The first-principles density-functional-theory calculations also suggest that the Co/Pd interfacial orbital magnetic moments in Co are anisotropic and contribute to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), and that the isotropic ones in Pd manipulates the Co orbitals at the interface …
We study the dependence of perpendicular-current magnetoresistance in magnetic multilayers on the angle between the magnetizations of the layers. This dependence varies with the thickness of one of the layers, and is different for multilayers with two and three magnetic layers. We derive a system of equations representing an extension of the two-current series resistor model, and show that the angular dependence of magnetoresistance gives information about the noncollinear spin-transport in ferromagnets.
Depth-grading of magnetic anisotropy in perpendicular magnetic media has been predicted to reduce the field required to write data without sacrificing thermal stability. To study this prediction, we have produced Co/Pd multilayers with depth-dependent Co layer thickness. Polarized neutron reflectometry shows that the thickness grading results in a corresponding magnetic anisotropy gradient. Magnetometry reveals that the anisotropy gradient promotes domain nucleation upon magnetization reversal - a clear experimental demonstration of the effectiveness of graded anisotropy for reducing write-fie…
The scattering theory of transport has to be applied with care in a diffuse environment. Here we discuss how the scattering matrices of heterointerfaces can be used to compute interface resistances of dirty magnetic multilayers. First principles calculations of these interface resistances agree well with experiments in the CPP (current perpendicular to the interface plane) configuration.
Controlling magnetic anisotropy by orbital magnetic moments related to interfacial strains has considerable potential for the development of future devices using spins and orbitals. For the fundamental physics, the relationship between strain and orbital magnetic moment is still unknown, because there are few tools to probe changes of orbital magnetic moment. In this study, we developed an electric-field- (E)-induced X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (EXMCD) technique to apply E to a ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We reversibly tuned the interfacial lattice constants of Ni/Cu multilayers on B…
The Monte Carlo method in the canonical ensemble is used to investigate magnetization reversal in amorphous transition metal - rare earth multilayers. Our study is based on a model containing diluted clusters which exhibit an effective uniaxial anisotropy in competition with random magnetic anisotropy in the matrix. We simulate hysteresis loops for an abrupt profile and a diffuse one obtained from atom probe tomography analyses. Our results evidence that the atom probe tomography profile favors perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in agreement with magnetic measurements. Moreover, the hysteresis …
In this paper we analyze in details the electronic properties of (Co/Ni) multilayers, a model system for spintronics devices. We use magneto-optical Kerr (MOKE), spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and anomalous surface diffraction experiments to investigate the electronic properties and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in [Co(x)/Ni(y)] single-crystalline stacks grown by molecular beam epitaxy.
In this study, to obtain perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) using half-metallic ferromagnets (HMFs), several methods were developed to induce perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in full-Heusler Co2FeSi (CFS) alloy thin layers in an MTJ multilayer composed of a layered CFS/MgO/CFS structure. Oxygen exposure at 2.0 Pa for 10 min after deposition of the bottom CFS layer was effective for obtaining PMA in the CFS layer. One of the reasons for the PMA is the formation of nearly ideal CFS/MgO interfaces due to oxygen exposure before the deposition of the MgO layer. The annealing pr…
We investigate the magnetic properties of a Heisenberg ferrimagnetic multilayer by using Monte Carlo simulations. The aim of this work is to study the local structural anisotropy model which is a possible origin of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in transition metal/rare earth amorphous multilayers. We have considered a face centered cubic lattice where each site is occupied by a classical Heisenberg spin. We have introduced in our model of amorphous multilayers a small fraction of crystallized Fe-Dy nanoclusters with a mean anisotropy axis along the deposition direction. We show that a …
Using broadband ferromagnetic resonance, we measure the damping parameter of [Co(5 Å)/Pt(3 Å)]${\times 6}$ multilayers whose growth was optimized to maximize the perpendicular anisotropy. Structural characterizations indicate abrupt interfaces essentially free of intermixing despite the miscible character of Co and Pt. Gilbert damping parameters as low as 0.021 can be obtained despite a magneto-crystalline anisotropy as large as $10^6~\textrm{J/m}^3$. The inhomogeneous broadening accounts for part of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, indicating some structural disorder leading to a equiva…
Multilayers of heavy metals and ferromagnets are the basis for the formation of various structures with inhomogeneous chiral magnetic distributions. The most informative method for studying magnetic states in such structures with a high spatial resolution is Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). Here, we report on the observation of chiral Néel domain walls by means of L-TEM in Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We explain the existence of chiral Néel internal structure due to the overcritical, giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our …
Transport properties of magnetic multilayers in current perpendicular to the plane of the layers geometry are defined by diffusive scattering in the bulk of the layers, and diffusive and ballistic scattering across the interfaces. Due to the short screening length in metals, layer by layer treatment of the multilayers is possible, when the macroscopic transport equation (Boltzmann equation or diffusion equation) is solved in each layer, while the details of the interface scattering are taken into account via the boundary conditions. Embedding the ballistic and diffusive interface scattering in…
We study the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effect and magnetocrystalline anisotropy in a series of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with $L1_1$-ordered fcc ferromagnetic alloys and MgO barrier along the [111] direction. Considering the (111)-oriented MTJs with different $L1_1$ alloys, we calculate their TMR ratios and magnetocrystalline anisotropies on the basis of the first-principles calculations. The analysis shows that the MTJs with Co-based alloys (CoNi, CoPt, and CoPd) have high TMR ratios over 2000$\%$. These MTJs have energetically favored Co-O interfaces where interfacial antibonding…
Antiferromagnetic (AF) domain walls have recently attracted revived attention, not only in the emerging field of AF spintronics, but also more specifically for offering fast domain wall velocities and dynamic excitations up to the terahertz frequency regime. Here we introduce an approach to nucleate and stabilize an AF domain wall in a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF). We present experimental and micromagnetic studies of the magnetization reversal in [(Co/Pt)$_{X-1}$/Co/Ir]$_{N-1}$(Co/Pt)$_X$ SAFs, where interface induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and AF interlayer exchange coupli…
In 1996, Berger and Slonczewski independently predicted that a large enough spin-polarized dc current density sent perpendicularly through a ferromagnetic layer could produce magnetic excitations (spin-waves) or reversal of magnetization (switching). In the past few years, both current-driven switching and current-driven excitation of spin-waves have been observed. The switching is of potential technological interest for direct 'writing' of magnetic random access memory (MRAM) or magnetic media. The spin-wave generation could provide a new source of dc generated microwave radiation. We describ…
We examine the electronic properties of 2D electron gas in black phosphorus multilayers in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, highlighting the role of in-plane anisotropy on various experimental quantities such as ac magneto-conductivity, screening, and magneto-plasmons. We find that resonant structures in the ac conductivity exhibits a red-shift with increasing doping due to inter-band coupling, $γ$. This arises from an extra correction term in the Landau energy spectrum proportional to $n^2γ^2$ ($n$ is Landau index), up to second order in $γ$. We found also that Coulomb interact…
The Fe/MgO interface is an essential ingredient in spintronics as it shows giant tunneling magnetoresistance and strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). A recent study demonstrated that the insertion of an ultra-thin LiF layer between the Fe and MgO layers enhances PMA significantly. In this study, we perform x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements on Fe/LiF/MgO multilayers to reveal the origin of the PMA enhancement. We find that the LiF insertion increases the orbital-magnetic-moment anisotropy and thus the magnetic anisotropy energy. We attribute the origin of this orbital-ma…
