By Monte Carlo simulations in the canonical ensemble, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in Fe/Dy amorphous multilayers. This work has been motivated by experimental results which show a clear correlation between the magnetic perpendicular anisotropy and the substrate temperature during elaboration of the samples. Our aim is to relate macroscopic magnetic properties of the multilayers to their structure, more precisely their concentration profile. Our model is based on concentration dependent exchange interactions and spin values, on random magnetic anisotropy and on the existence of locally ordered clusters that leads to a perpendicular magnetisation. Our results evidence that a compensation point occurs in the case of an abrupt concentration profile. Moreover, an increase of the noncollinearity of the atomic moments has been evidenced when the Dy anisotropy constant value grows. We have also shown the existence of inhomogeneous magnetisation profiles along the samples which are related to the concentration profiles.
Depth-grading of magnetic anisotropy in perpendicular magnetic media has been predicted to reduce the field required to write data without sacrificing thermal stability. To study this prediction, we have produced Co/Pd multilayers with depth-dependent Co layer thickness. Polarized neutron reflectometry shows that the thickness grading results in a corresponding magnetic anisotropy gradient. Magnetometry reveals that the anisotropy gradient promotes domain nucleation upon magnetization reversal - a clear experimental demonstration of the effectiveness of graded anisotropy for reducing write-fie…
A vertically graded anisotropy profile has been proposed as an optimized balance of low coercivity and thermal stability for multilayers used in magnetic media. Deposition pressure is known to have a profound effect on the magnetic reversal properties of Co/Pd multilayers, making it an attractive control parameter for achieving an anisotropy gradient. We have used polarized neutron reflectometry to study the depth-dependent reversal behavior of "pressure-graded" Co/Pd, and observed pronounced gradients in the saturation magnetization and in the rate at which magnetization changes with field (t…
We report the experimental observation of magnetic skyrmion-like states in patterned ferromagnetic nanostructures consisting of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt multilayer film exchange coupled with Co nanodisks in vortex state. The magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that depending on the magnitude of Co/Pt perpendicular anisotropy in these systems two different modes of skyrmion formation are realized.
We investigate the dynamic magnetic response of ferromagnetic flexible NiFe/Ta and FeCuNbSiB/Ta multilayers under external stress. We explore the possibility of handling magnetic anisotropy and dynamic magnetic response of flexible magnetostrictive nanostructures. We quantify the sensitivity of the multilayers under external stress by calculating the ratio $|Δ\textrm{MI}|/|Δ\barσ|$ and show that considerable values can be reached by tuning the magnetic field, frequency, magnetostriction constant, and external stress. The results reveal possibilities of application of flexible magnetostrictive …
We suggest here a novel nano-laminate, 5[Fe]/2[W$_x$Re$_{1-x}$] (x=0.6-0.8), with enhanced magnetic hardness in combination with a large saturation moment. The calculated magnetic anisotropy of this material reaches values of 5.3-7.0 MJ/m$^3$, depending on alloying conditions. We also propose a recipe in how to identify other novel magnetic materials, such as nano-laminates and multilayers, with large magnetic anisotropy in combination with a high saturation moment.
A theoretical study is made of the magnetization versus applied field curves of ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic multilayers constructed according to a Fibonacci quasiperiodic sequence. The ferromagnetic films are assumed to have uniaxial anisotropy and are coupled by both bilinear and biquadratic effective exchange. The effects of quasiperiodicity in the magnetic phases are illustrated numerically for Fe/Cr systems.
The tunability of Ar+ ion irradiation of Co/Pd multilayers has been employed to create depth-dependent perpendicular anisotropy gradients. By adjusting the Ar+ kinetic energy and fluence, the depth and lateral density of the local structural modification are controlled. First-order reversal curve analysis through X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and conventional magnetometry studies show that the local structural damage weakens the perpendicular anisotropy near the surface, leading to a magnetization tilting towards the in-plane direction. The ion irradiation method is complementary to, and m…
Oblique/normal sequential deposition technique is used to create Co based unique multilayer structure [Co-oblique(4.4nm)/Co-normal (4.2 nm)]x10, where each Co-oblique layer is deposited at an oblique angle of 75deg, to induce large in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA). Compared to the previous ripple, stress and oblique angle deposition (OAD) related studies on Cobalt in literature, one-order higher UMA with the easy axis of magnetization along the projection of the tilted nano-columns in the multilayer plane is observed. The multilayer retains magnetic anisotropy even after annealing a…
We studied the in-plane magnetic anisotropy of rf (radio frequency) sputtered [(FeTaN)/(TaN)](n) multilayers synthesized on Si substrates. In the multilayers where n=5, the FeTaN thickness is fixed at 30 nm and the thickness of TaN, t(TaN), is varied from 0 to 6.0 nm, we observed a clear trend that, with increasing t(TaN), the values of coercivity, grain size, and amplitude of maximum magnetoresistance (MR) of the samples all decrease first and then increase after reaching a minimum when t(TaN) is around 2.0-4.0 nm. This trend is also associated with an evolution of in-plane magnetic anisotrop…
Using broadband ferromagnetic resonance, we measure the damping parameter of [Co(5 Å)/Pt(3 Å)]${\times 6}$ multilayers whose growth was optimized to maximize the perpendicular anisotropy. Structural characterizations indicate abrupt interfaces essentially free of intermixing despite the miscible character of Co and Pt. Gilbert damping parameters as low as 0.021 can be obtained despite a magneto-crystalline anisotropy as large as $10^6~\textrm{J/m}^3$. The inhomogeneous broadening accounts for part of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, indicating some structural disorder leading to a equiva…
Multilayers of Co90Fe10/Pd with different bilayer thicknesses, have been deposited by dc-magnetron sputtering on thermally oxidized Si wafers. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the highly textured crystalline films had columnar structure, while scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy respectively indicated some layer waviness and surface roughness. The magnetic domain structure and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of the Co90Fe10/Pd multilayers were investigated by off-axis electron holography and magnetic force microscopy. The Co90Fe10 layer thi…
In this paper we analyze in details the electronic properties of (Co/Ni) multilayers, a model system for spintronics devices. We use magneto-optical Kerr (MOKE), spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and anomalous surface diffraction experiments to investigate the electronic properties and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in [Co(x)/Ni(y)] single-crystalline stacks grown by molecular beam epitaxy.
We investigate the magnetic properties of a Heisenberg ferrimagnetic multilayer by using Monte Carlo simulations. The aim of this work is to study the local structural anisotropy model which is a possible origin of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in transition metal/rare earth amorphous multilayers. We have considered a face centered cubic lattice where each site is occupied by a classical Heisenberg spin. We have introduced in our model of amorphous multilayers a small fraction of crystallized Fe-Dy nanoclusters with a mean anisotropy axis along the deposition direction. We show that a …
Temperature- and bias voltage-dependent transport measurements of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with perpendicularly magnetized Co/Pd electrodes are presented. Magnetization measurements of the Co/Pd multilayers are performed to characterize the electrodes. The effects of the Co layer thickness in the Co/Pd bilayers, the annealing temperature, the Co thickness at the MgO barrier interface, and the number of bilayers on the tunneling magneto resistance (TMR) effect are investigated. TMR-ratios of about 11 % at room temperature and 18.5 % at 13 K are measured and two well-defined switching fi…
We demonstrate the pumping of phonons by ferromagnetic resonance in a series of [Co(0.8 nm)/Pd(1.5 nm)]$_n$ multilayers ($n =$ 6, 11, 15, and 20) with large magnetostriction and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The effect is shown using broadband ferromagnetic resonance over a range of temperatures (10 to 300 K), where a resonant damping enhancement is observed at frequencies corresponding to standing wave phonons across the multilayer. The strength of this effect is enhanced by approximately a factor of 4 at 10 K compared to room temperature, which is anomalous in the sense that the tempera…
Within a phenomenological approach the density of induced uniaxial anisotropy in nanostructures K(r) is treated as a physical field additional to the magnetization M(r). The equilibrium distributions of K(r) are formed under the influence of the surfaces and internal interactions. The functions K(r) and M(r) are calculated for a magnetic layer between two nonmagnetic spacers. It is shown that the transition from the phase with magnetization in plane to the perpendicular phase occurs continuously via an intermediate phase which is inhomogeneous across the layer-thickness. The theory explains ex…
Stripe domains are studied in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy films nanostructured with a periodic thickness modulation that induces the lateral modulation of both stripe periods and inplane magnetization. The resulting system is the 2D equivalent of a strained superlattice with properties controlled by interfacial misfit strain within the magnetic stripe structure and shape anisotropy. This allows us to observe, experimentally for the first time, the continuous structural transformation of a grain boundary in this 2D magnetic crystal in the whole angular range. The magnetization reversal pr…
The Monte Carlo method in the canonical ensemble is used to investigate magnetization reversal in amorphous transition metal - rare earth multilayers. Our study is based on a model containing diluted clusters which exhibit an effective uniaxial anisotropy in competition with random magnetic anisotropy in the matrix. We simulate hysteresis loops for an abrupt profile and a diffuse one obtained from atom probe tomography analyses. Our results evidence that the atom probe tomography profile favors perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in agreement with magnetic measurements. Moreover, the hysteresis …
We systematically investigate the perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in Co$-$Pt/Pd-based multilayers. Our magnetic measurement data shows that the asymmetric Co/Pd/Pt multilayer has a significantly larger perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy compared to the symmetric Co/Pt and Co/Pd multilayer samples. We further support this experiment by first principles calculations on the CoPt$_2$, CoPd$_2$, and CoPtPd, which are composite bulk materials that consist of three atomic layers in a unit cell, Pt/Co/Pt, Pd/Co/Pd, Pt/Co/Pd, respectively. By estimating the contribution of…
We use broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction to investigate the fundamental origin of perpendicular anisotropy in Co90Fe10/Ni multilayers. By careful evaluation of the spectroscopic g-factor, we determine the orbital moment along the out-of-plane and in-plane directions. For the multilayers, we find a direct relationship between the orbital moment asymmetry and the perpendicular anisotropy, consistent with the theory of Bruno [P.Bruno, Phys. Rev. B, 39, 865 (1989)]. A systematic x-ray diffraction study revealed the presence of a trigonal strain as high as 0.7 % i…
To address thermal stability issues for spintronic devices with a reduced size, we investigate spin-orbit torque in Co/Pt multilayers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Note that the spin-orbit torque arises from the global imbalance of the spin currents from the top and bottom interfaces for each Co layer. By inserting Ta or Cu layers to strengthen the top-down asymmetry, the spin-orbit torque efficiency can be greatly modified without compromised perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Above all, the efficiency builds up as the number of layers increases, realizing robust thermal stab…
Ever since its discovery in 1996, ultrafast demagnetization has ignited immense research interest due to its scientific rigor and technological potential. A flurry of recent theoretical and experimental investigations has proposed direct and indirect excitation processes in separate systems. However, it still lacks a unified mechanism and remains highly debatable. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that instead of either direct or indirect interaction, simultaneous and controlled excitation of both direct and indirect mechanisms of demagnetization are possible in a multilayers composed o…
[Co/Ni] multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have been researched and applied in various spintronic applications. Typically the seed layer material is studied to provide the desired face-centered cubic (\textit{fcc}) texture to the [Co/Ni] to obtain PMA. The integration of [Co/Ni] in back-end-of-line (BEOL) processes also requires the PMA to survive post-annealing. In this paper, the impact of NiCr, Pt, Ru, and Ta seed layers on the structural and magnetic properties of [Co(0.3 nm)/Ni(0.6 nm)] multilayers is investigated before and after annealing. The multilayers were depo…
Controlling magnetic anisotropy by orbital magnetic moments related to interfacial strains has considerable potential for the development of future devices using spins and orbitals. For the fundamental physics, the relationship between strain and orbital magnetic moment is still unknown, because there are few tools to probe changes of orbital magnetic moment. In this study, we developed an electric-field- (E)-induced X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (EXMCD) technique to apply E to a ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We reversibly tuned the interfacial lattice constants of Ni/Cu multilayers on B…
We present deposition and characterization of multilayers consisting of 20 repetitions of 15 $Å$ thick permalloy Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ at. \% (Py) and 5 $Å$ Pt. The samples were prepared by two different sputter deposition methods, namely dc magnetron sputtering (dcMS) and high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS), that represent low and moderate ionized flux fraction of the film forming material, respectively, for deposition of the Py layers. The effect of substrate roughness, working gas pressure and sputter power on the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the films are studied. The…

We report a study of the structural and magnetic behavior of the topmost magnetic layer in a ferromagnet-nonmagnet (Co-Au) multilayer system. Glancing angle X-ray diffraction measurements performed on a series of multilayers showed a gradually increasing degree of amorphization of the topmost magnetic layer with increasing number of bilayers. Concurrently, the magnetic hardness and magneto-crystalline anisotropy of the top Co layer were found to decrease, as observed by magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. This magnetic softening has been discussed in the light of Herzer's random anisotro…
Multifunctional materials composed of ultrathin magnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy combined with ferroelectric substrates represent a new approach toward low power, fast, high density spintronics. Here we demonstrate Co/Ni multilayered films with tunable saturation magnetization and perpendicular anisotropy grown directly on ferroelectric PZT [Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3] substrate plates. Electric fields up to +/- 2 MV/m expand the PZT by 0.1% and generate at least 0.02% in-plane compression in the Co/Ni multilayered film. Modifying the strain with a voltage can reduce the coercive f…
The reversal of magnetic bubble helicity through topologically trivial transient states provides an additional degree of freedom that promises the development of multidimensional magnetic memories. A key requirement for this concept is the stabilization of bubble states at ambient conditions on application-compatible substrates. In the present work we demonstrate a stabilization routine for remanent bubble states in high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [(Co(0.44\,nm)/Pt(0.7\,nm)]$_X$, X = 48, 100, 150 multilayers on Si/SiO$_2$ substrates by exploring the effect of external magnetic fields ($…
We report on a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in [CoFe 0.4nm/Pd t]6 (t = 1.0-2.0 nm) multilayers fabricated by DC sputtering in a ultrahigh vacuum chamber. Saturation magnetization, $M_s$, and uniaxial anisotropy, $K_u$, of the multilayers decrease with increasing the spacing thickness, with a $M_s$ of 155 emu/cc and a $K_u$ of 1.14$\times 10^5$ J/m$^3$ at a spacing thickness of t = 2 nm. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal that spin and orbital magnetic moments of Co and Fe in CoFe film decrease as function of Pd thickness, indicat…
Ferromagnet/heavy metal (FM/HM) multilayer thin films with $C_{2v}$ symmetry have the potential to host antiskyrmions and other chiral spin textures via an anisotropic Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, we present a candidate material system that also has a strong uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy aligned in the plane of the film. This system is based on a new Co/Pt epitaxial relationship, which is the central focus of this work: hexagonal closed-packed Co$(10\bar{1}0)[0001]$ $\parallel$ face-centered cubic Pt$(110)[001]$. We characterized the crystal structure and magnetic pro…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and dynamic magnetization reversal process in [CoFeB $t$ nm/Pd 1.0 nm]$_n$ ($t$ = 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 nm; $n$ = 2 - 20) multilayer films have been studied by means of magnetic hysteresis and Kerr effect measurements. Strong and controllable PMA with an effective uniaxial anisotropy up to 7.7$\times$ 10$^6$ J.m$^{-3}$ and a saturation magnetization as low as 200 emu/cc are achieved. Surface/interfacial anisotropy of CoFeB/Pd interfaces, the main contribution to the PMA, is separated from the effective uniaxial anisotropy of the films, and appears …
We have studied the magnetic properties of multilayers composed of ferromagnetic metal Co and heavy metals with strong spin orbit coupling (Pt and Ir). Multilayers with symmetric (ABA stacking) and asymmetric (ABC stacking) structures are grown to study the effect of broken structural inversion symmetry. We compare the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy of symmetric Pt/Co/Pt, Ir/Co/Ir multilayers and asymmetric Pt/Co/Ir, Ir/Co/Pt multilayers. First, the interface contribution to the PMA is studied using the Co layer thickness dependence of the effective PMA energy. Comparison of th…
The phenomena of exchange anisotropy is well known in terms of static magnetization properties such as enhanced coercivity and magnetization loop shifts. These effects are primarily associated with effective anisotropies introduced into the ferromagnet by exchange coupling with a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnet. These effective anisotropies can be understood as manifestations of a more fundamental exchange induced susceptibility. We show that a consequence of this view is that a class of unusual dynamic effects associated with the exchange susceptibility should also exist. The effects bec…
The Co$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ shows intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) order, which origins from superexchange interaction between Co and Te atoms, with higher Curie temperature ($T_c$) of 161 K. Co$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ monolayer (ML) is half-metal (HM), and spin-$β$ electron is a semiconductor with gap of 1.311 eV. Co$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ ML tends in-plane anisotropy (IPA), with magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of -10.2 meV/f.u.. Co$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ ML shows good dynamical and thermal stability. Most interestingly, bilayers present ferromagnetic half-metallicity independent of the stacking orders. Notley, the multil…
Perpendicular heterostructures based on a ferrimagnetic Mn2RuxGa (MRG) layer and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer were examined to understand the effects of different spacer layers (V, Mo, Hf, HfOx and TiN) on the interfaces with the magnetic electrodes, after annealing at 350 C. Loss of perpendicular anisotropy in MRG is strongly correlated with a reduction in the substrate-induced tetragonality due to relaxation of the crystal structure. In the absence of diffusion, strain and chemical ordering within MRG are correlated. The limited solubility of both Hf and Mo in MRG is a source of addition…
Element-specific orbital magnetic moments and their anisotropies in perpendicularly magnetised Co/Pd multilayers are investigated using Co L-edge and Pd M-edge angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We show that the orbital magnetic moments in Co are anisotropic, whereas those in Pd are isotropic. The first-principles density-functional-theory calculations also suggest that the Co/Pd interfacial orbital magnetic moments in Co are anisotropic and contribute to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), and that the isotropic ones in Pd manipulates the Co orbitals at the interface …
Magnetic lateral multilayers have been fabricated on weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy amorphous Nd-Co films in order to perform a systematic study on the conditions for controlled nucleation of topological defects within their magnetic stripe domain pattern. A lateral thickness modulation of period $w$ is defined on the nanostructured samples that, in turn, induces a lateral modulation of both magnetic stripe domain periods $λ$ and average in-plane magnetization component $M_{inplane}$. Depending on lateral multilayer period and in-plane applied field, thin and thick regions switch indep…
We report on the controlled switching of domain wall (DW) magnetization in aligned stripe domain structures, stabilized in [Co (0.44 nm)/Pt (0.7 nm)]$_X$ ($X = 48$, 100, 150) multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The switching process, induced by an external magnetic field, is monitored by measuring the evolution of the in-plane magnetization. % We show that the remanent in-plane magnetization originates from the polarization of the Bloch-type DWs. With micromagnetic simulations, we reveal that the reversal of the DW polarization is the result of the emergence and collapse of hor…

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) attract significant attention due to their exceptional optical and excitonic properties. It was understood already in the 1960s, and recently rediscovered, that many TMDs possess high refractive index and optical anisotropy, which make them attractive for nanophotonic applications. However, accurate analysis and predictions of nanooptical phenomena require knowledge of dielectric constants along both in- and out-of-plane directions and over a broad spectral range -- information, which is often inaccessible or incomplete. Here, we present an experimental …
Multilayers of heavy metals and ferromagnets are the basis for the formation of various structures with inhomogeneous chiral magnetic distributions. The most informative method for studying magnetic states in such structures with a high spatial resolution is Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). Here, we report on the observation of chiral Néel domain walls by means of L-TEM in Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We explain the existence of chiral Néel internal structure due to the overcritical, giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our …
We examine the atomic intermixing phenomenon in three distinct amorphous CoB-based multilayer thin film platforms - Pt/CoB/Ir, Ir/CoB/Pt and Pt/CoB/MgO - which are shown to stabilise room-temperature chiral magnetic textures. Intermixing occurs predominantly between adjacent metallic layers. Notably, it is stack-order dependent, and particularly extensive when Ir sits atop CoB. Intermixing induced variations in magnetic properties are ascribed to the formation of magnetic dead layer arising from CoIr alloying in the metallic stacks. It also produces systematic variations in saturation magnetiz…
The reflection coefficient of bulk spin waves from multilayer ferromagnetic structure with periodically modulated parameters of exchange interaction, uniaxial and rhombic magnetic anisotropy and saturation magnetization is calculated with a non-ideal coupling between layers. The strong dependence of spin-wave reflection coefficient on frequency, magnetic field and parameter of interfacial coupling is revealed. It allows changing the reflection intensity from 0 to 1 by changing either only external magnetic field value or frequency. The proposed model of boundary conditions gives the opportunit…
The effect of the saturation field on the magnetization reversal of FePt(L10)/FeCo/CoO/FeCo multilayer (ML) has been investigated to understand the origin of asymmetric magnetization reversal and its correlation with exchange bias (EB). In the ML structure, the bottom FeCo layer is coupled to the hard FePt(L10) layer, and the top FeCo layer is comparatively free due to the relatively more distance from it. The ML has been deposited under UHV conditions and characterized at each stage of growth using magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray reflectivity techniques. Magnetization reversal is furthe…
To characterize the possible magnetic structures created on magnetic multilayers a model has been formulated and studied. The interlayer inhomogeneous structures found indicate either (i) a regular periodic, (ii) a quasiperiodic change in the magnetization or (iii) spatially chaotic glass states. The magnetic structures created depend mainly on the ratio of the magnetic anisotropy constant to the exchange constant. With the increase of this ratio the periodic structures first transform into the quasiperiodic and then into the chaotic glass states. The same tendency arises with the depolarizati…
The magnetization dynamics in nanostructures has been extensively studied in the last decades, and nanomagnetism has evolved significantly over that time, discovering new effects, developing numerous applications, and identifying promising new directions. This includes magnonics, an emerging research field oriented on the study of spin-wave dynamics and their applications. In this context, thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) offer interesting opportunities to study spin waves, in particular, due to out-of-plane magnetization in remanence or at relatively weak …
Black phosphorus exhibits a high degree of band anisotropy. However, we found that its in-plane static screening remains relatively isotropic for momenta relevant to elastic long-range scattering processes. On the other hand, the collective electronic excitations in the system exhibit a strong anisotropy. Band non-parabolicity leads to a plasmon frequency which scales as $n^β$, where $n$ is the carrier concentration, and $β<\tfrac{1}{2}$. Screening and charge distribution in the out-of-plane direction are also studied using a non-linear Thomas-Fermi model.
