This paper is concerned with identification of a spatial source function from final time observation in a bi-parabolic equation, where the full source function is assumed to be a product of time dependent and a space dependent function. Due to the ill-posedness of the problem, recently some authors have employed different regularization method and analysed the convergence rates. But, to the best of our knowledge, the quasi-reversibility method is not explored yet, and thus we study that in this paper. As an important implication, the H{ö}lder rates for the apriori and aposteriori error estimates obtained in this paper improve upon the rates obtained in earlier works. Also, in some cases we show that the rates obtained are of optimal order. Further, this work seems to be the first one that has broaden the applicability of the problem by allowing the time dependent component of the source function to change sign. To the best of our knowledge, the earlier known work assumed the fixed sign of the time dependent component by assuming some bounded below condition.
In this work we determine the second-order coefficient in a parabolic equation from the knowledge of a single final data. Under assumptions on the concentration of eigenvalues of the associated elliptic operator, and the initial state, we show the uniqueness of solution, and we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate for the inversion when the final time is large enough. The Lipschitz stability constant grows exponentially with respect to the final time, which makes the inversion ill-posed. The proof of the stability estimate is based on a spectral decomposition of the solution to the parabolic …
In this paper we are concerned with rate of convergence of parabolic systems with large diffusion. We will exhibit the exact moment that spatial homogenization occurs and estimate the continuity of attractors by a rate of convergence. We will show an example where our estimate is optimal.
Although implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods for approximating solutions to semilinear parabolic equations are relatively standard, most recent works examine the case of a fully discretized model. We show that by discretizing time only, one can obtain an elementary convergence result for an implicit-explicit method. This convergence result is strong enough to imply existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of semilinear parabolic equations.
For a family of second-order parabolic systems with bounded measurable, rapidly oscillating and time-dependent periodic coefficients, we investigate the sharp convergence rates of weak solutions in $L^2$. Both initial-Dirichlet and initial-Neumann problems are studied.
De Giorgi conjectured in 1979 that if a sequence of parabolic functionals Gamma converges to a limiting functional, then the corresponding gradient flows will converge as well after changing timescale appropriately. This paper studies the Gamma convergence for a kind of parabolic functionals, and it supports the De Giorgi's conjecture.
We present a new stability result for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic equations which allows to pass to the limit when one has only weak convergence in time of the nonlinearities.
Based on a comparison principle, we derive an exponential rate of convergence for solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for a class of quasilinear parabolic equations in one space dimension. We then apply the result to some models in population dynamics and image processing.
We exhibit a singularly perturbed parabolic problems for which the asymptotic behavior can be described by an one-dimensional ordinary differential equation. We estimate the continuity of attractors in the Hausdorff metric by rate of convergence of resolvent operator.
We study the behaviour of solutions of linear non-autonomous parabolic equations subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions under perturbation of the domain. We prove that Mosco convergence of function spaces for non-autonomous parabolic problems is equivalent to Mosco convergence of function spaces for the corresponding elliptic problems. As a consequence, we obtain convergence of solutions of non-autonomous parabolic equations under domain perturbation by variational methods using the same characterisation of domains as in elliptic case. A similar technique can be applied to obtain …
This paper is concerned with the optimal convergence rate in homogenization of higher order parabolic systems with bounded measurable, rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The sharp $O(\va)$ convergence rate in the space $L^2(0,T; H^{m-1}(\Om))$ is obtained for both the initial-Dirichlet problem and the initial-Neumann problem. The duality argument inspired by \cite{suslinaD2013} is used here.
We study two identification problems in relation with a strongly degenerate parabolic diffusion equation characterized by a vanishing diffusion coefficient $u\in W^{1,\infty},$ with the property $\frac{1}{u}\notin L^{1}. $ The aim is to identify $u$ from certain observations on the solution, by a technique of nonlinear optimal control with control in coefficients. The existence of a controller $u$ which is searched in $% W^{1,\infty}$ and the determination of the optimality conditions are given for homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. An approximating problem further introduced allows a …
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the semilinear parabolic equation with dynamical boundary condition. Our main goal is to prove the convergence of a global solution to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity by means of a suitable Łojasiewicz--Simon type inequality.
We are concerned with the problem of recovering the radial kernel $k$, depending also on time, in the parabolic integro-differential equation $$D_{t}u(t,x)={\cal A}u(t,x)+\int_0^t k(t-s,|x|){\cal B}u(s,x)ds +\int_0^t D_{|x|}k(t-s,|x|){\cal C}u(s,x)ds+f(t,x),$$ ${\cal A}$ being a uniformly elliptic second-order linear operator in divergence form. We single out a special class of operators ${\cal A}$ and two pieces of suitable additional information for which the problem of identifying $k$ can be uniquely solved locally in time when the domain under consideration is a ball or a disk.

This paper is concerned with the study of solutions to discrete parabolic equations in divergence form with random coefficients, and their convergence to solutions of a homogenized equation. It has previously been shown that if the random environment is translational invariant and ergodic, then solutions of the random equation converge under diffusive scaling to solutions of a homogenized parabolic PDE. In this paper point-wise estimates are obtained on the difference between the averaged solution to the random equation and the solution to the homogenized equation for certain random environmen…
We consider a family of optimal control problems where the control variable is given by a boundary condition of Neumann type. This family is governed by parabolic variational inequalities of the second kind. We prove the strong convergence of the optimal controls and state systems associated to this family to a similar optimal control problem. This work solves the open problem left by the authors in IFIP TC7 CSMO2011.
Convergence to stationary solutions in fully nonlinear parabolic systems with general nonlinear boundary conditions is shown in situations where the set of stationary solutions creates a $C^2$-manifold of finite dimension which is normally stable. We apply the parabolic Hölder setting which allows to deal with nonlocal terms including highest order point evaluation. In this direction some theorems concerning the linearized systems is also extended. As an application of our main result we prove that the lens-shaped networks generated by circular arcs are stable under the surface diffusion flow.
In this paper we study the quantitative homogenization of second-order parabolic systems with locally periodic (in both space and time) coefficients. The $O(\varepsilon)$ scale-invariant error estimate in $L^2(0, T; L^{\frac{2d}{d-1}}(Ω))$ is established in $C^{1, 1}$ cylinders under minimum smoothness conditions on the coefficients. This process relies on critical estimates of smoothing operators. We also develop a new construction of flux correctors in the parabolic manner and a sharp estimate for temporal boundary layers.
We shall study in this paper the Lipschitz type stabilities and convergence rates of Tikhonov regularization for the recovery of the radiativities in elliptic and parabolic systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The Lipschitz type stability estimates are derived. Due to the difficulty of the verification of the existing source conditions or nonlinearity conditions for the considered inverse radiativity problems in high dimensional spaces, some new variational source conditions are proposed. The conditions are rigorously verified in general dimensional spaces under the Lipschitz type stabi…
This paper is concerned with the study of solutions to discrete parabolic equations in divergence form with random coefficients, and their convergence to solutions of a homogenized equation. In [11] rate of convergence results in homogenization and estimates on the difference between the averaged Green's function and the homogenized Green's function for random environments which satisfy a Poincaré inequality were obtained. Here these results are extended to certain environments in which correlations can have arbitrarily small power law decay. Similar results for discrete elliptic equations wer…
In this paper we study a simple non-local semilinear parabolic equation with Neumann boundary condition. We give local existence result and prove global existence for small initial data. A natural non increasing in time energy is associated to this equation. We prove that the solution blows up at finite time $T$ if and only if its energy is negative at some time before $T$. The proof of this result is based on a Gamma-convergence technique.
In this paper, we are concerned with a quasi-linear hyperbolic-parabolic system of persistence and endogenous chemotaxis modelling vasculogenesis in $\mathbb{R}$. Under some suitable structural assumption on the pressure function, we first predict the system admits a nonlinear diffusion wave in $\mathbb{R}$ based on the empirical results in the literature. Then we show that the solution of the concerned system will locally and asymptotically converges to this nonlinear diffusion wave if the wave strength is small. By using the time-weighted energy estimates, we further prove that the convergen…
This note is devoted to the study of the finite volume methods used in the discretization of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equation with zero-flux boundary condition. The notion of an entropy-process solution, successfully used for the Dirichlet problem, is insufficient to obtain a uniqueness and convergence result because of a lack of regularity of solutions on the boundary. We infer the uniqueness of an entropy-process solution using the tool of the nonlinear semigroup theory by passing to the new abstract notion of integral-process solution. Then, we prove that numerical solution converge…
We give sufficient conditions under which the convergence of finite difference approximations in the space variable of possibly degenerate second order parabolic and elliptic equations can be accelerated to any given order of convergence by Richardson's method.
The large time behaviour of nonnegative solutions to a quasilinear degenerate diffusion equation with a source term depending solely on the gradient is investigated. After a suitable rescaling of time, convergence to a unique profile is shown for global solutions. The proof relies on the half-relaxed limits technique within the theory of viscosity solutions and on the construction of suitable supersolutions and barrier functions to obtain optimal temporal decay rates and boundary estimates. Blowup of weak solutions is also studied.
In this paper, we study the numerical approximation of a coupled system of elliptic-parabolic equations posed on two separated spatial scales. The model equations describe the interplay between macroscopic and microscopic pressures in an unsaturated heterogeneous medium with distributed microstructures as they often arise in modeling reactive flow in cementitious-based materials. Besides ensuring the well-posedness of our two-scale model, we design two-scale convergent numerical approximations and prove a priori error estimates for the semidiscrete case. We complement our analysis with simulat…
In this paper we investigate the zero-relaxation limit of the following multi-D semilinear hyperbolic system in pseudodifferential form: W_{t}(x,t) + (1/epsilon) A(x,D) W(x,t) = (1/epsilon^2) B(x,W(x,t)) + (1/epsilon) D(W(x,t)) + E(W(x,t)). We analyse the singular convergence, as epsilon tends to 0, in the case which leads to a limit system of parabolic type. The analysis is carried out by using the following steps: (i) We single out algebraic ``structure conditions'' on the full system, motivated by formal asymptotics, by some examples of discrete velocity models in kinetic theories. (ii) We …
Two essential quantities for the analysis of approximation schemes of evolution equations are stability and convergence. We derive stability and convergence of fully discrete approximation schemes of solutions to linear parabolic evolution equations governed by time dependent coercive operators. We consider abstract Galerkin approximations in space combined with theta-schemes in time. The level of generality of our analysis comprises both a large class of time-dependent operators and a large choice of approximating Galerkin spaces. In particular the results apply to partial integro differentia…
This paper considers a family of second-order periodic parabolic equations with highly oscillating potentials, which have been considered many times for the time-varying potentials in stochastic homogenization. Following a standard two-scale expansions illusion, we can guess and succeed in determining the homogenized equation in different cases that the potentials satisfy the corresponding assumptions, based on suitable uniform estimates of the $L^2(0,T;H^1(Ω))$-norm for the solutions. To handle the more singular case and obtain the convergence rates in $L^\infty(0,T;L^2(Ω))$, we need to estim…
We consider a class of fully non-linear parabolic equations on compact Hermitian manifolds involving symmetric functions of partial Laplacians. Under fairly general assumptions, we show the long time existence and convergence of solutions. We also derive a Harnack inequality for the linearized equation which is used in the proof of convergence.
We study the behaviour of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic problems when the data are perturbed. The class includes the Richards equation, Stefan problem and the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation. We show that, up to a subsequence, weak solutions of the perturbed problem converge uniformly-in-time to weak solutions of the original problem as the perturbed data approach the original data. We do not assume uniqueness or additional regularity of the solution. However, when uniqueness is known, our result demonstrates that the weak solution is uniformly temporally stable to pert…
Let $u_{g}$ the unique solution of a parabolic variational inequality of second kind, with a given $g$. Using a regularization method, we prove, for all $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$, a monotony property between $μu_{g_{1}} + (1-μ)u_{g_{2}}$ and $u_{μg_{1} + (1-μ)g_{2}}$ for $μ\in [0, 1]$. This allowed us to prove the existence and uniqueness results to a family of optimal control problems over $g$ for each heat transfer coefficient $h>0$, associated to the Newton law, and of another optimal control problem associated to a Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove also, when $h\to +\infty$, the strong conv…
This paper deals with a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with nonlinear diffusion. It was proved that there exists a solution of a Cahn-Hilliard system as an approximation of a nonlinear diffusion equation by applying an abstract theory by Colli-Visintin [Comm. Partial Differential Equations 15 (1990), 737-756] for a doubly nonlinear evolution inclusion with some bounded monotone operator and subdifferential operator of a proper lower semicontinuous convex function (cf. Colli-Fukao [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 429 (2015), 1190-1213]). Moreover, Colli-Fukao [J. Differential Equations 260 (2016), 6…
This study is concerned with a family of parabolic system with general singular nonlinearities, which is a generalization of MEMS system. To some extent, the classification of global existence and quenching according to parameters and initial data is given. Moreover, the convergence rate is also obtained. We point out that compared to single MEMS equation, new ideas and techniques are introduced in obtaining the convergence rate for system in our study. In fact, due to the lack of variational characterization for the first eigenvalue of the linearized elliptic system, the methods in obtaining …
We apply the parabolic flow method to solving complex quotient equations on closed Kähler manifolds. We study the parabolic equation and prove the convergence. As a result, we solve the complex quotient equations.
In this paper, we determine the convergence speed of an upscaling of a pseudo-parabolic system containing drift terms with scale separation of size $ε\ll 1$. Both the upscaling and convergence speed determination exploit a natural spatial-temporal decomposition, which splits the pseudo-parabolic system into a spatial elliptic partial differential equation and a temporal ordinary differential equation. We extend the applicability to space-time domains that are a product of spatial and temporal domains, such as a time-independent perforated spatial domain. Finally, for special cases we show conv…
We establish a Schn$\ddot{\text{u}}$rer's convergence result and then apply it to obtain the existence of solutions on the second boundary value problem for a family of special Lagrangian equations
The tangential condition was introduced in [Hanke et al., 95] as a sufficient condition for convergence of the Landweber iteration for solving ill-posed problems. In this paper we present a series of time dependent benchmark inverse problems for which we can verify this condition.
In this paper we prove a general homogenization result for monotone parabolic problems with an arbitrary number of microscopic scales in space as well as in time, where the scale functions are not necessarily powers of epsilon. The main tools for the homogenization procedure are multiscale convergence and very weak multiscale convergence, both adapted to evo lution problems. At the end of the paper an example is given to concretize the use of the main result.
In the current paper, we consider the following parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis system with logistic source on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, \begin{equation} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla\cdot ( u\nabla v) + u(a-bu),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^{N}\,\,\, t>0\cr {v_t}=Δv -λv+μu,\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^{N}\,\,\, t>0 \end{cases}(1) \end{equation} where $χ, \ a,\ b,\ λ,\ μ$ are positive constants and $N$ is a positive integer. We investigate the persistence and convergence in (1). To this end, we first prove, under the assumption $b>\frac{Nχμ}{4}$, the global existence of a unique classical solution $(u(x,t;u_0, v_0),v(x…
We study homogenization for fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in stationary ergodic spatio-temporal media from the qualitative and quantitative perspective. We show that under suitable hypotheses, solutions to fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in spatio-temporal media homogenize almost surely. In addition, we obtain a rate of convergence for this homogenization in measure, assuming that the environment is strongly mixing with a prescribed rate. A general methodology to study the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic equations was introduced by Caffarelli, Soug…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions for quasilinear parabolic equations in bounded intervals. In particular, we are concerned with a special class of solutions, called interface solutions, which exhibit e metastable behavior, meaning that their convergence towards the asymptotic configuration of the system is exponentially slow. The key of our analysis is a linearization around an approximation of the steady state of the problem, and the reduction of the dynamics to a one-dimensional motion, describing the slow convergence of the interfaces towards the equilibrium.
We study the asymptotic behavior of Lipschitz continuous solutions of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations in the periodic setting. Our results apply to a large class of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. Defining S as the set where the diffusion vanishes, i.e., where the equation is totally degenerate, we obtain the convergence when the equation is uniformly parabolic outside S and, on S, the Hamiltonian is either strictly convex or satisfies an assumption similar of the one introduced by Barles-Souganidis (2000) for first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This latter assumption allows to …
In this article, we study certain type of boundary behaviour of positive solutions of the heat equation on the upper half-space of $\R^{n+1}$. We prove that the existence of the parabolic limit of a positive solution of the heat equation at a point in the boundary is equivalent to the existence of the strong derivative of the boundary measure of the solution at that point. Moreover, the parabolic limit and the strong derivative are equal.
In order to have a better description of homogenization for parabolic partial differential equations with periodic coefficients, we define the notion of parametric two-scale convergence. A compactness theorem is proved to justify this notion.
We show convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in situations where the set of equilibria is non-discrete, but forms a finite-dimensional $C^1$-manifold which is normally hyperbolic. Our results do not depend on the presence of an appropriate Lyapunov functional as in the Łojasiewicz-Simon approach, but are of local nature.
We study two equations of Lotka-Volterra type that describe the Darwinian evolution of a population density. In the first model a Laplace term represents the mutations. In the second one we model the mutations by an integral kernel. In both cases, we use a nonlinear birth-death term that corresponds to the competition between the traits leading to selection. In the limit of rare or small mutations, we prove that the solution converges to a sum of moving Dirac masses. This limit is described by a constrained Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This was already proved by B. Perthame and G. Barles for the …
We develop a new variational formulation of the inverse Stefan problem, where information on the heat flux on the fixed boundary is missing and must be found along with the temperature and free boundary. We employ optimal control framework, where boundary heat flux and free boundary are components of the control vector, and optimality criteria consists of the minimization of the sum of $L_2$-norm declinations from the available measurement of the temperature flux on the fixed boundary and available information on the phase transition temperature on the free boundary. This approach allows one t…
This work aims to provide a comprehensive and unified numerical analysis for non linear system of parabolic variational inequalities (PVIs) subject to Dirichlet boundary condition. This analysis enables us to establish an existence of the exact solution to the considered model and to prove the convergence for the approximate solution and its approximate gradient. Our results are applicable for several conforming and non conforming numerical schemes.
We consider the inverse problem of identification of degenerate diffusion coefficient of the form $x^αa(x)$ in a one dimensional parabolic equation by some extra data. We first prove by energy methods the uniqueness and Lipschitz stability results for the identification of a constant coefficient $a$ and the power $α$ by knowing an interior data at some time. On the other hand, we obtain the uniqueness result for the identification of a general diffusion coefficients $a(x)$ and also the power $α$ form a boundary data on one side of the space interval. The proof is based on global Carleman estim…
We consider an abstract parabolic problem in a framework of maximal monotone graphs, possibly multi-valued with growth conditions formulated with help of an $x-$dependent $N-$function. The main novelty of the paper consists in the lack of any growth restrictions on the ${N}$--function combined with its anisotropic character, namely we allow the dependence on all the directions of the gradient, not only on its absolute value. This leads us to use the notion of modular convergence and studying in detail the question of density of compactly supported smooth functions with respect to the modular c…
We study second order parabolic equations on Lipschitz domains subject to inhomogeneous Neumann (or, more generally, Robin) boundary conditions. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and their continuity up to the boundary of the parabolic cylinder. Under natural assumptions on the coefficients and the inhomogeneity we can also prove convergence to an equilibrium or asymptotic almost periodicity.
