Layered antiferromagnetic materials have emerged as a novel subset of the two-dimensional family providing a highly accessible regime with prospects for layer-number-dependent magnetism. Furthermore, transition metal phosphorous trichalcogenides, MPX3 (M = transition metal; X = chalcogen) provide a platform for investigating fundamental interactions between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom providing new insights for developing fields of spintronics and magnonics. Here, we use a combination of temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory to explore magnetic-ordering-dependent interactions between the manganese spin degree of freedom and lattice vibrations of the non-magnetic sub-lattice via a Kramers-Anderson super-exchange pathway in both bulk, and few-layer, manganese phosphorous triselenide (MnPSe$_3$). We observe a nonlinear temperature dependent shift of phonon modes predominantly associated with the non-magnetic sub-lattice, revealing their non-trivial spin-phonon coupling below the N{é}el temperature at 74 K, allowing us to extract mode-specific spin-phonon coupling constants.
Ultrasonic velocity measurements on the magnetoelectric multiferroic compound CuFeO2 reveal that the antiferromagnetic transition observed at TN1 = 14 K might be induced by an R-3m -> C2/m pseudoproper ferroelastic transition (G. Quirion, M. J. Tagore, M. L. Plumer, O. A. Petrenko, Phys. Rev. B 77, 094111 (2008)). In that case, the group theory states that the order parameter associated with the structural transition must belong to a two dimensional irreducible representation Eg (x^2 - y^2, xy). Since this type of transition can be driven by a Raman Eg mode, we performed Raman scattering measu…
In this letter we investigated the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of CaMn7O12 helimagnet from room temperature down to 10 K. The temperature dependence of the Raman mode parameters show remarkable anomalies for both antiferromagnetic and incommensurate transitions that this compound undergoes at low temperatures. The anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition indicate a spin-phonon coupling at higher-temperature magnetic transition in this material, while a magnetostrinction effect at the lower-temperature magnetic transition.

We have performed polarized Raman scattering measurements on WTe$_2$, for which an extremely large positive magnetoresistance has been reported recently. We observe 5 A$_1$ phonon modes and 2 A$_2$ phonon modes out of 33 Raman active modes, with frequencies in good accordance with first-principles calculations. The angular dependence of the intensity of the peaks observed is consistent with the Raman tensors of the $C_{2v}$ point group symmetry attributed to WTe$_2$. Although the phonon spectra suggest neither strong electron-phonon nor spin-phonon coupling, the intensity of the A$_1$ phonon m…
We use a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy experiment and model magnetism-phonon coupling calculations to study the rich magneto-Raman effect in the two-dimensional (2D) magnet $\mathrm{CrI_3}$. We reveal a novel layered-magnetism-assisted phonon scattering mechanism below the magnetic onset temperature, whose Raman excitation breaks time-reversal symmetry, has an antisymmetric Raman tensor, and follows the magnetic phase transitions across critical magnetic fields, on top of the presence of the conventional phonon scattering with symmetric Raman tensors in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$…
We have performed polarized and temperature-dependent Raman scattering measurements on extremely large magnetoresitance compounds TaAs$_2$ and NbAs$_2$. In both crystals, all the Raman active modes, including six A$_g$ modes and three B$_g$ modes, are clearly observed and well assigned with the combination of symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations. The well-resolved periodic intensity modulations of the observed modes with rotating crystal orientations, verify the symmetry of each assigned mode and are fitted to experimentally determine the elements of Raman tensor matrixes. The b…
Recently it was discovered that van der Waals-bonded magnetic materials retain long range magnetic ordering down to a single layer, opening many avenues in fundamental physics and potential applications of these fascinating materials. One such material is FePS3, a large spin (S=2) Mott insulator where the Fe atoms form a honeycomb lattice. In the bulk, FePS3 has been shown to be a quasi-two-dimensional-Ising antiferromagnet, with additional features in the Raman spectra emerging below the Neel temperature of approximately 120 K. Using magneto-Raman spectroscopy as an optical probe of magnetic …
Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. T…
Magnetoelectric materials have generated wide technological and scientific interest because of the rich phenomena these materials exhibit, including the coexistence of magnetic and ferroelectric orders, magnetodielectric behavior, and exotic hybrid excitations such as electromagnons. The multiferroic spinel material, CoCr$_2$O$_4$, is a particularly interesting example of a multiferroic material, because evidence for magnetoelectric behavior in the ferrimagnetic phase seems to conflict with traditional noncollinear-spin-driven mechanisms for inducing a macroscopic polarization. This paper repo…
Spin-phonon coupling, the interaction of spins with surrounding lattice is a key parameter to understand the underlying physics of multiferroics and engineer their magnetization dynamics. Elementary excitations in multiferroic materials are strongly influenced by spin-phonon interaction, making Raman spectroscopy a unique tool to probe these coupling(s). Recently, it has been suggested that the dielectric and magnetic properties of 15R-type hexagonal BaMnO3 are correlated through the spin-lattice coupling. Here, we report the observation of an extensive renormalization of the Raman spectrum of…
We perform Raman scattering experiments on natural graphite in magnetic fields up to 45 T, observing a series of peaks due to interband electronic excitations over a much broader magnetic field range than previously reported. We also explore electron-phonon coupling in graphite via magnetophonon resonances. The Raman G peak shifts and splits as a function of magnetic field, due to the magnetically tuned coupling of the E2g optical phonons with the K- and H-point inter-Landau-level excitations. The analysis of the observed anticrossing behavior allows us to determine the electron-phonon couplin…
The magneto-phonon resonance or MPR occurs in semiconductor materials when the energy spacing between Landau levels is continuously tuned to cross the energy of an optical phonon mode. MPRs have been largely explored in bulk semiconductors, in two-dimensional systems and in quantum dots. Recently there has been significant interest in the MPR interactions of the Dirac fermion magnetoexcitons in graphene, and a rich splitting and anti-crossing phenomena of the even parity E2g long wavelength optical phonon mode have been theoretically proposed and experimentally observed. The MPR has been found…
We have investigated the coupling of lattice with spin via strain interactions in the CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite system. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies illustrate a remarkable modification in CoFe2O4lattice across Curie temperature (450 K) of PMN-PT. Subsequently, CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite reveals a sudden drop in magnetic moment across Tc of PMN-PT (450 K). However, theindependent CoFe2O4phasedisplaystypical ferromagnetic behaviour across this temperature. These findings establish spin-lattice coupling owing to th interfacial strain transfer between CoFe2O4 and PMN-PT in compos…

MnCr2O4 that exhibits spin frustration and complex spiral spin order is of great interest from both fundamental as well as application-oriented perspectives. Unlike CoCr2O4 whose ground state presents the coexistence of commensurate spiral spin order (CSSO) and ferroelectric order, MnCr2O4 shows no multiferroicity. One reason is that the spiral spin order is highly sensitive to the oxygen concentration in MnCr2O4. Here, we have successfully grown high-quality single-crystalline MnCr2O4 by the chemical vapor transport method. We observe a new first-order magnetic transition from the incommensur…
The micro-Raman scattering response of a graphene-like location on the surface of bulk natural graphite is investigated both at $T=\unit{4.2}{K}$ and at room temperature in magnetic fields up to 29 T. Two different polarization configurations, co-circular and crossed-circular, are employed in order to determine the Raman scattering selection rules. Several distinct series of electronic excitations are observed and we discuss their characteristic shapes and amplitudes. In particular, we report a clear splitting of the signals associated with the inter-Landau level excitations $-n\rightarrow+n$.…
Experimental demonstrations of 1D van der Waals material tellurium have been presented by Raman spectroscopy under strain and magneto-transport. Raman spectroscopy measurements have been performed under strains along different principle axes. Pronounced strain response along c-axis is observed due to the strong intra-chain covalent bonds, while no strain response is obtained along a-axis due to the weak inter-chain van der Waals interaction. Magneto-transport results further verify its anisotropic property, resulting in dramatically distinct magneto-resistance behaviors in terms of three diffe…
The thin films of lead free magneto-electric compound AlFeO3 have been deposited using pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and reflectivity measurements established the orthorhombic structure and material density of 4.5g/cc which is comparable with bulk AlFeO3. The Raman mode corresponding to AlFeO3 was found to vanish when magnetic field of 800 Oe was applied at room temperature. Additionally, it was observed that the Raman phonon mode present at the room temperature becomes invisible in the temperature window of 280K-236K and reappears below it…
We report an observation of room temperature magnetodielectric (RTMD) effect in Mn doped LaGaO3. Results of frequency dependent magnetoresistance (FDMR) measurements discards the possibility of any magnetoresistive contribution in the observed MD effect. The intrinsic nature of MD coupling has been validated/evidenced by means of magnetic field dependent Raman spectroscopy and explained in terms of modified volume strain governed by magnetic field induced rerotation of spin coupled Mn-orbitals. Ultimately, present RTMD effect is attributed to magneto-compression/magnetostriction associated wit…
The crystallographic and magnetic properties of the cleavable 4d3 transition metal compound a-MoCl3 are reported, with a focus on the behavior above room temperature. Crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport and characterized using temperature dependent x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements. A structural phase transition occurs near 585 K, at which the Mo-Mo dimers present at room temperature are broken. A nearly regular honeycomb net of Mo is observed above the transition, and an optical phonon associated with the dimerization instability is identified i…
The strong coupling between spin, lattice and electronic degrees of freedom in magnetic materials can produce interesting phenomena, including multiferroic and magnetodielectric (MD) behavior, and exotic coupled excitations, such as electromagnons. We present a temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent inelastic light (Raman) scattering study that reveals the emergence of vibronic modes, i.e., coupled vibrational and crystal-electric-field (CEF) electronic excitations, in the unconventional rare-earth MD material, $\text{Ce}_2\text{O}_3$. The energies and intensities of these emergent vibronic…
Temperature dependent X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies were carried out on the flux grown single crystals of gallium ferrite with Ga:Fe ratio of 0.9:1.1. Site occupancy calculations from the Rietveld refinement of the X-ray data led to the estimated magnetic moment of ~0.60 \muB /f.u. which was in good agreement with the experimental data. Combination of these two measurements indicates that there is no structural phase transition in the material between 18 K to 700 K. A detailed line shape analysis of the Raman mode at ~375 cm^-1 revealed a discontinuity in the peak position …
The quadruple Calcium manganite (CaMn7O12) is a multiferroic material that exhibits a giant magnetically-induced ferroelectric polarization which makes it very interesting for magnetoelectric applications. Here, we report the Raman spectroscopy study on this compound of both the phonon modes and the low energy excitations from 4 K to room temperature. A detailed study of the Raman active phonon excitations shows that three phonon modes evidence a spin-phonon coupling at TN2 = 50 K. In particular, we show that the mode at 432 cm-1 associated to Mn(B)O6 (B position of the perovskite) rotations a…
Landau level broadening mechanisms in electrically neutral and quasineutral graphene were investigated through micro-magneto-Raman experiments in three different samples, namely, a natural single-layer graphene flake and a back-gated single-layer device, both deposited over Si/SiO2 substrates, and a multilayer epitaxial graphene employed as a reference sample. Interband Landau level transition widths were estimated through a quantitative analysis of the magnetophonon resonances associated with optically active Landau level transitions crossing the energy of the E_2g Raman-active phonon. Contra…
We review the different results obtained in the last decade in the field of Raman scattering of graphene based systems, with an applied magnetic field. Electronic properties of graphene based systems with an applied magnetic field will first be described. The phonon response in magnetic field, the magneto-phono resonance, will then be introduced and described in different systems, including graphene, multilayer graphene and bulk graphite. Electronic Raman scattering is then be discussed in the context of Landau level spectroscopy, of electron phonon interaction and of electron-electron interac…
We use polarized magneto-Raman scattering to study purely electronic excitations and the electron-phonon coupling in bulk graphite. At a temperature of 4.2 K and in magnetic fields up to 28 T we observe $K$-point electronic excitations involving Landau bands with $Δ|n|=0$ and with $Δ|n|=\pm2$ that can be selected by controlling the angular momentum of the excitation laser and of the scattered light. The magneto-phonon effect involving the $E_{2g}$ optical phonon and $K$-point inter Landau bands electronic excitations with $Δ|n|=\pm1$ is revealed and analyzed within a model taking into account …
We have studied the magnetodielectric and magnetoelastic coupling in TbFe3(BO3)4 single crystals by means of capacitance, magnetostriction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The data reveal strong magnetic field effects on the dielectric constant and on the macroscopic sample length which are associated to long range magnetic ordering and a field-driven metamagnetic transition. We discuss the coupling of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic order parameters and attribute the origin of the magnetodielectric coupling to phonon mode shifts according to the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller (LST) relatio…

Multiferroics possess two or more switchable states such as polarization, magnetization, etc. Phonon excitations in multiferroic phase are strongly modified by magnetoelectric coupling, spin-phonon coupling, and anharmonic phonon-phonon interactions. Here, we have investigated the correlation between phonons and multiferroic order parameters in hexagonal BaMO3: M = Ti1-x(Mn/Fe)x systems using powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopic, and magnetic measurements. The structural transformation from a polar tetragonal to a non-polar 6H-type hexagonal phase is observed as a function of d…
Cr2Ge2Te6 has been of interest for decades, as it is one of only a few ferromagnetic insulators. Recently, this material has been revisited due to its potential as a substrate for Bi2Te3, a topological insulator. This enables the possibility of studying the anomalous quantum Hall effect in topological insulators, and a route to novel spintronic devices. To probe the compatibility of these two materials, we use polarized variable temperature Raman microscopy to study Bi2Te3-Cr2Ge2Te6 heterostructure as well as the phonon dynamics of Cr2Ge2Te6. We found the temperature dependence of the Cr2Ge2Te…
We report the influence of Ni/Mn ordering on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6. Three types of films with different levels of structural order, including long-range Ni/Mn cation order, cation disorder, and an admixture of the ordered and disordered phases, are compared by polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Each film displays a strong dependence on the polarization configuration and a unique set of Raman active phonon excitations. Long-range cation ordering results in the splitting of Raman active phonon peaks because of Brillouin zone folding and lowering …
The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642, and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the 657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of…
We report on structure, vibrational properties and weak-antilocalization-(WAL-) induced quantum correction to magnetoconductivity in single crystal Bi2GeTe4. Surface band structure calculations show a single Dirac cone corresponding to topological surface states in Bi2GeTe4. An estimated phase coherence length, l_ϕ ~ 143 nm and prefactor α ~ - 1.54 from Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka fitting of magnetoconductivity describe the quantum correction to conductivity. An anomalous temperature dependence of A1g Raman modes confirms enhanced electron-phonon interactions. Our results establish the involvement o…
In this work, we analysed GdMnO3 magnetoelectric thin films prepared by a general sol-gel method. The film formation temperature is analysed by termogravimetric analysis, while the lattice parameters of the Pbnm orthorhombic films are determined from the analysis of the x-ray spectra. The x-ray results also reveal that GdMnO3 films are under compression along the b axis. The lattice dynamic analysis carried out by Raman spectroscopy confirms the formation of films with a Pbnm orthorhombic structure. Moreover, the analysis of the Raman spectra suggests that besides film-substrate interaction, t…
Vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]$_{x}$, $x\approx 2$) is an organic-based ferrimagnet with a high magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_C>600 ~K}$, low magnetic damping, and growth compatibility with a wide variety of substrates. However, similar to other organic-based materials, it is sensitive to air. Although encapsulation of V[TCNE]$_{x}$ with glass and epoxy extends the film lifetime from an hour to a few weeks, what is limiting its lifetime remains poorly understood. Here we characterize encapsulated V[TCNE]$_{x}$ films using confocal microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, ferromagnetic …
In bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3), antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric order coexist at room temperature, making it of particular interest for studying magnetoelectric coupling. The mutual control of magnetic and electric properties is very useful for a wide variety of applications. This has led to an enormous amount of research into the properties of BiFeO$_3$. Nonetheless, one of the most fundamental aspects of this material, namely the symmetries of the lattice vibrations, remains controversial. We present a comprehensive Raman study of BiFeO$_3$ single crystals with the approach of monitoring the…
We report on the lattice and spin dynamics in the monopnictide CrAs using polarized Raman scattering. This system exhibits a first-order magneto-structural phase transition at T_N~ 265 K, below which the magnetic moments of Cr form an incommensurate double helical magnetic structure while the unit cell volume abruptly expands. Across the transition, the frequencies of the fully symmetric Ag phonons strongly renormalize, which along with the results of first-principle calculations suggest the presence of a sizeable coupling of the phonons to the magnetic degrees of freedom in this compound. In …
We report a detailed magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies on partially disordered and biphasic double perovskite La2NiMnO6. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements show two magnetic anomalies at TC1 ~ 270 K and TC2 ~ 240 K, which may indicate the ferromagnetic ordering of the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases, respectively. A broad peak at a lower temperature (Tsg ~ 70 K) is also observed indicating a spin-glass transition due to partial anti-site disorder of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions. Unlike the pure monoclinic phase, the biphasic compound exhibits a broad but a clear dielectric anomaly ar…
Dielectric study on Ca3Mn2O7 features relaxor-like segmented dynamics below the antiferromagnetic ordering. Dipolar relaxations of different origin are spectrally resolved exhibiting distinct H-field alterations. This identifies their allegiance to different magnetic sub-phases and establishes dual coupling of electrical, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom. Further, strong spin-lattice coupling has been affirmed with Raman spectroscopy across the magnetic ordering. Short-range electrical correlations collaterally cause measurable harmonic dielectric response in the system. The \c{hi}_…
Raman study on a select few orthochromites, RCrO$_3$ (R = Y, Lu, Gd, Eu and Sm) shows that the phonon behavior at TN in compounds with magnetic R-ion (Gd and Sm) is remarkably different from that of non-magnetic R-ion (Y, Lu and Eu). While anomalies in most of the observed phonon frequencies in all these compounds may result from the distortion of CrO$_6$ octahedra due to size effect and magnetostriction arising from Cr-ordering, the anomalous behavior of their linewidths observed at TN for the compounds with only magnetic R-ion suggests spin-phonon coupling. The presence of spin-phonon coupli…
We examine the effect of changing the linear polarization angle $θ$ of incident microwaves with respect to the dc current on radiation-induced magnetoresistance oscillations in a two-dimensional (2D) system within the balance-equation formulation of the photon-assisted magnetotransport model, considering the radiative decay as the sole damping mechanism. At an extremum the amplitude of oscillatory magnetoresistance $R_{xx}$ exhibits a sinusoidal, up to a factor of 5, magnitude variation with rotating the polarization angle $θ$. The maximal amplitude shows up generally at a nonzero $θ$, which i…
We report the magneto-conductivity analysis of Bi2Se3 single crystal at different temperatures in a magnetic field range of 14Tesla. The single crystals are grown by the self-flux method and characterized through X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Raman Spectroscopy. The single crystals show magnetoresistance (MR) of around 380 percent at a magnetic field of 14T and a temperature of 5K. The Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) equation has been used to fit the magneto-conductivity (MC) data. However, the HLN fitted curve deviates at higher magnetic fields above 1 Tesla, suggesting tha…
