Spin-phonon coupling, the interaction of spins with surrounding lattice is a key parameter to understand the underlying physics of multiferroics and engineer their magnetization dynamics. Elementary excitations in multiferroic materials are strongly influenced by spin-phonon interaction, making Raman spectroscopy a unique tool to probe these coupling(s). Recently, it has been suggested that the dielectric and magnetic properties of 15R-type hexagonal BaMnO3 are correlated through the spin-lattice coupling. Here, we report the observation of an extensive renormalization of the Raman spectrum of 15R-BaMnO3 at 230 K, 280 K, and 330 K. Magnetic measurements reveal the presence of a long-range and a short-range magnetic ordering in 15R-BaMnO3 at 230 K and 330 K, respectively. The Raman spectrum shows the appearance of new Raman modes in the magnetically ordered phases. Furthermore, an additional Raman phonon appears below ~ 280 K, possibly arising from a local lattice-distortion due to the displacement of Mn-ions, that exhibits anomalous shift with temperature. The origin of the observed renormalization and phonon anomalies in Raman spectra are discussed based on the evidences from temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent Raman spectra, temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Our results indicate the presence of magnetostriction and spin-phonon coupling in 15R-BaMnO3 thus suggesting that the optical phonons are strongly correlated to its magnetoelectric properties.
The magnetic properties, the magnetostriction, and the magnetoelectric effect in the d-electron free rare-earth aluminum borate TmAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated between room temperature and 2 K. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a strong anisotropy with the hexagonal c-axis as the hard magnetic axis. Magnetostriction measurements show a large effect of an in-plane field reducing both, the a- and c-axis lattice parameters. The magnetoelectric polarization change in a- and c-directions reaches up to 300 $μ$C/m$^2$ at 70 kOe with the field applied along the a-axis. The magnetoelectric pola…
We introduce the notion of inverse effect of magnetostriction for magnetostrictive/piezoelectric heterostructures and study this effect theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the inverse effect of magnetostriction may crucially contribute to the mechanism of magnetoelectric coupling. It is shown that the studied effect essentially modifies the saturation magnetostriction of the whole structure as compared to its magnetic phase bulk and also induces an additional magnetic anisotropy. Our consideration provides useful insight into the fundamental issue of strain-mediated magnetoelect…
The existence of magnetostriction in bulk BiFeO3 is still a matter of investigation and it is also an issue to investigate the magnetostriction effect in nano BiFeO3. Present work demonstrates the existence of magnetostrictive strain in superparamagnetic BiFeO3 nanoparticles at room temperature and the magnetoelectric coupling properties in composite form with P(VDFTrFE). Despite few reports on the magnetostriction effect in bulk BiFeO3 evidenced by the indirect method, the direct method (strain gauge) was employed in this work to examine the magnetostriction of superparamagnetic BiFeO3. In ad…
For conventional plate and disc layered magnetoelectric (ME) composites, the ME effect appeared under low bias magnetic fields, which caused by line magnetostriction. In this paper, we present a new structure ME composites, cylindrical bilayered composites. Unexpectedly, the ME effect also appeared under high magnetic fields in this cylindrical bilayered Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) composite. We thought this ME effect caused by volume magnetostriction. The results showed that the ME voltage coefficient of the cylindrical bilayered composite of Ni-PZT was the sum of aE(l) caused by line ma…
Improper ferroelectricity (trimerization) in the hexagonal manganites RMnO$_3$ leads to a network of coupled structural and magnetic vortices that induce domain wall magnetoelectricity and magnetization neither of which, however, occurs in the bulk. Here we combined first-principles calculations, group-theoretic techniques, and microscopic spin models to show how the trimerization not only induces a polarization but also a bulk magnetization and bulk magnetoelectric (ME) effect. This results in the existence of a bulk linear ME vortex structure or a bulk ME coupling such that if direction of p…
The transverse and longitudinal magnetoelectric susceptibilities (MES) were quantitatively determined for (001) heteroepitaxial BiFeO$_{3}$-CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ nanostructures. Both of these MES values were sharply enhanced at magnetic fields below 6 kOe and revealed asymmetric lineshapes with respect to the dc magnetic field, demonstrating the strain-induced magnetoelectric effect. The maximum transverse MES, which reached as high as $\sim$60 mV/cm Oe, was about five times larger than the longitudinal MES. This observation signifies that transverse magnetostriction of the CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ nanop…
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites RMnO3 are theoretically studied by focusing on crucial roles of the symmetric magnetostriction or the Peierls-type spin-phonon coupling through extending our previous work [M. Mochizuki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037205 (2010)]. We first construct a microscopic classical Heisenberg model for RMnO3 including the frustrated spin exchanges, single-ion anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We also incorporate the lattice degree of freedom coupled to the Mn spins via the Peierls-type magnetostriction. By analyzing t…
In this study we have compared magnetic, magnetostrictive and piezomagnetic properties of isotropic and anisotropic cobalt ferrite pellets. The isotropic sample was prepared by the ceramic method while the sample exhibiting uniaxial anisotropy was made by reactive sintering using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). This technique permits to induce a magnetic anisotropy in cobalt ferrite in the direction of the applied pressure during SPS process. Sample with uniaxial anisotropy revealed a higher longitudinal magnetostriction and piezomagnetism compared to the isotropic sample, but the transversal ma…
We report the first magnetic-field-dependent Raman scattering studies on Pb(Zr,Ti)O3-CoFe2O4 bilayer multiferroic system. The phonon frequencies of the nano-bilayers obviously change with magnetic field, which is absent in the single Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 films. The magnetostriction of the CoFe2O4 layer generates stress mechanically transferred to the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 layer, resulting in the mode changes. The observed magnetic-field-induced softening of the soft mode in the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 layer bears a striking resemblance to direct magnetoelectric output in the bilayers, providing evidence for stress-mediated …
We report magnetic and magnetoelectric studies on BiFeO3 and divalent cation (A) suvtitute Bi0.7A0.3FeO3 (A = Sr,Ba, and Sr0.5Ba0.5). It is shown that the rapid increase of magnetization at the Neel temperature (TN = 642 K) is suppressed in the co-doped compound A = Sr0.5Ba0.5. All the divalent subtituted compounds show enhanced magnetization and hysteresis loop. Both longitudinal and transverse magnetoelectric coefficients were measured using the dynamical lock-in technique. The co-doped compound shows the highest magnetoelectric coefficient at room temperature although it is not the compound…
Magnetoelectric (ME) materials are of fundamental interest and show broad potential for technological applications. Commonly the dominant contribution to the ME response is the lattice-mediated one, which is proportional to both the Born electric charge $Z^{\rm e}$ and its analogue, the dynamical magnetic charge $Z^{\rm m}$. Our previous study has shown that exchange striction acting on noncollinear spins induces much larger magnetic charges than those that depend on spin-orbit coupling. The hexagonal manganites $R$MnO$_3$ and ferrites $R$FeO$_3$ ($R$ = Sc, Y, In, Ho-Lu) exhibit strong couplin…
The magnetic compensation and magnetostriction properties in Fe doped CoCr2O4 samples have been investigated. Structural and magnetic measurements imply that the doped Fe3+ ions initially occupy the B1(Cr) sites when x<0.1, and then mainly take the A(Co) sites. This behaviour results in a role conversion of magnetic contributors and a composition compensation between two competitively magnetic sublattices at x=0.1. Temperature dependence compensation has also been found in the samples with x=0.1~0.22, with the compensation temperature in the range of 40~104 K. The Fe3+ doping also modulates th…
This paper reports the development of a methodology combining microstrip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) and digital image correlation (DIC) in order to silmuteanously measure the voltage-induced strains and the magnetic resonance in artificial magnetoelectric heterostructures (magnetic films/piezoelectric substrate? or magnetic films/flexible substrate/piezoelectric actuator ?). The overall principle of the technique and the related analytical modelling are described. It is powerful to estimate the magnetostriction coefficient of ferromagnetic thin films and can be used to determine the effe…
The polar magnet CaBaCo$_{4}$O$_{7}$ is known to exhibit the largest magnetic-field-driven electric polarization change ($ΔP$) associated with an antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferrimagnetic (FIM) transition in a narrow temperature range between 62 and 69 K. In this work, we investigate the effect of Ni doping on its multiferroic properties, by means of magnetization, electric polarization, dielectric constant, and magnetostriction measurements on single crystals of CaBaCo$_{3.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$O$_{7}$ up to 50 T. In the doped material, two kinds of AFM phases appear below 78 K, accompanying negative $ΔP$…
We observe a seemingly complex magnetic field dependence of dielectric constant of hexagonal YbMnO3 near the spin ordering temperature. After rescaling, the data taken at different temperatures and magnetic fields collapse on a single curve describing the sharp anomaly in nonlinear magnetoelectric response at the magnetic transition. We show that this anomaly is a result of the competition between two magnetic phases. The scaling and the shape of the anomaly are explained using the phenomenological Landau description of the competing phases in hexagonal manganites.
We report coupling between magnetic and electric orders for antiferromagnetic polycrystalline FeVO4 in which magnetism-induced polarization has been recently found in noncollinear antiferromagnetic state below the second antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN2=15.7K. In this low symmetry phase space group P-1, the magnetic field dependence of electric polarization evidences a clear magnetoelectric coupling in the noncollinear spin-configured antiferromagnetic phase. The discontinuity of magnetodielectric effect observed at the vicinity of the polar to nonpolar transition evidences competitio…
Frequency dependence of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is investigated in trilayers of ferromagnetic alloy and piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The ferromagnetic phases studied include permendur, a soft magnet with high magnetostriction, iron, nickel, and cobalt. Low frequency data on ME voltage coefficient versus bias magnetic field indicate strong coupling only for trilayers with permendure or Ni. Measurements of frequency dependence of ME voltage reveal a giant ME coupling at electromechanical resonance. The ME interactions for transverse fields is an order of magnitude stronger …
Hexagonal YMnO_3 with space group P63cm is one of the rare examples of multiferroic materials that exhibit co-dependence of a robust ferroelectric phase along with antiferromagnetic ordering. This is primarily ascribed to tilting of the MnO_5 polyhedra driven by magnetoelectric coupling. We report on the effect of magnetic field at the atomic level in YMnO_3 by utilizing magnetic field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction measurements. We show that near the Néel temperature the lattice parameters, effective magnetic moment per site, Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles show large …
Hexagonal RMnO3 is a multiferroic compound with a giant spin-lattice coupling at an antiferromagnetic transition temperature [1]. Despite extensive studies over the past two decades, however, the origin and underlying microscopic mechanism of the strong spin-lattice coupling remain still very much elusive. In this study, we have tried to address this problem by measuring the thermal expansion and dielectric constant of doped single crystals Y1-xLuxMnO3 with x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0. From these measurements, we confirm that there is a progressive change in the physical properties with do…
Clear anomalies in the lattice thermal expansion (deviation from linear variation) and elastic properties (softening of the sound velocity) at the antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition are observed in the prototypical multiferroic BiFeO3 using a combination of picosecond acoustic pump-probe and high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments. Similar anomalies are also evidenced using first-principles calculations supporting our experimental findings. Those calculations in addition to a simple Landau-like model we also developed allow to understand the elastic softening and lattice chang…
Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ has drawn a lot of research attention due to its contentious room-temperature multiferroicity. Due to the unstability of hexagonal phase in the bulk form, most experimental studies focused on LuFeO$_3$ thin films which can be stabilized by strain using proper substrates. Here we report on the hexagonal phase stabilization, magnetism, and magnetoelectric coupling of bulk LuFeO$_3$ by partial Sc-substitution of Lu. First, our first-principles calculations show that the hexagonal structure can be stabilized by partial Sc substitution, while the multiferroic properties includin…
Here we demonstrate that MnTe epitaxial films with zinc-blend structure and MnTe/ZnTe multilayers should show ferroelectric polarization in antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state and thus belong to multiferroics. Spontaneous ferroelectric polarization results from the bending of highly ionic Mn-Te-Mn bonds induced by magnetostrictive shear strain. Orientation of ferroelectric polarization is coupled with orientation of AFM vector and thus can be controlled by application of the external magnetic field. Due to the clamping of electric and magnetic order parameters, domain structure in MnTe i…
Hexagonal ferrites (h-RFeO$_3$, R=Y, Dy-Lu) have recently been identified as a new family of multiferroic complex oxides. The coexisting spontaneous electric and magnetic polarizations make h-RFeO$_3$ rare-case ferroelectric ferromagnets at low temperature. Plus the room-temperature multiferroicity and predicted magnetoelectric effect, h-RFeO$_3$ are promising materials for multiferroic applications. Here we review the structural, ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of h-RFeO$_3$. The thin film growth is also discussed because it is critical in making high quality single cr…
Coexistence of mutually influencing ferroelectric and magnetic ordering at low temperature in hexagonal phase of rare-earth manganites gives rise to interesting physical phenomena. Here, we report a detailed analysis of powder neutron diffraction (ND) studies on polycrystalline Y1-xDyxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.05) as a function of temperature. Our analysis shows that Dy doping at Y site leads to modification in lattice constants: unit cell shrinks in c direction, but expands in ab plane, unit cell volume increases and effective Mn magnetic moment also reduces. All the Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond an…
Using high resolution powder x-ray and neutron diffraction experiments, we determined the off-centered displacement of the ions within a unit cell and magnetoelectric coupling in nanoscale BiFeO$_3$ ($\approx$20-200 nm). We found that both the off-centered displacement of the ions and magnetoelectric coupling exhibit nonmonotonic variation with particle size. They increase as the particle size reduces from bulk and reach maximum around 30 nm. With further decrease in particle size, they decrease precipitously. The magnetoelectric coupling is determined by the anomaly in off-centering of ions a…
The effects of high magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization on single crystals of BiFeO$_3$ were investigated through magnetization, magnetostriction, and neutron diffraction measurements. The magnetostriction measurements revealed lattice distortion of $2\times 10^{-5}$, during the reorientation process of the cycloidal spin order by applied magnetic fields. Furthermore, anomalous changes in magnetostriction and electric polarization at a larger field demonstrate an intermediate phase between cycloidal and canted antiferromagnetic states, where a la…
Two dimensional multiferroics inherit prominent physical properties from both low dimensional materials and magnetoelectric materials, and can go beyond their three dimensional counterparts for their unique structures. Here, based on density functional theory calculations, a MXene derivative, i.e., i-MXene (Ta$_{2/3}$Fe$_{1/3}$)$_2$CO$_2$, is predicted to be a type-I multiferroic material. Originated from the reliable $5d^0$ rule, its ferroelectricity is robust, with a moderate polarization up to $\sim12.33$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ along the a-axis, which can be easily switched and may persist above room …
We report on the magnetic structure and ordering of hexagonal LuFeO3 films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) on YSZ (111) and Al2O3 (0001) substrates. Using a set of complementary probes including neutron diffraction, we find that the system magnetically orders into a ferromagnetically-canted antiferromagnetic state via a single transition between 138-155 K, while a paraelectric to ferroelectric transition occurs above 1000 K. The symmetry of the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric state implies that this material is a strong candidate for linear magnetoelectric coupling and control of…
Magnetoelectric (ME) properties under rotating magnetic field H are comparatively investigated in two representative hexaferrites Y-type Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe0.92Al0.08)12O22 and Z-type Ba0.52Sr2.48Co2Fe24O41, both of which have exhibited a similar transverse conical spin structure and giant ME coupling near room temperature. When the external H is rotated clockwise by 2pi, in-plane P vector is rotated clockwise by 2pi in the Y-type hexaferrite and counterclockwise by 4pi in the Z-type hexaferrite. A symmetry-based analysis reveals that the faster and opposite rotation of P vector in the Z-type hex…

A current challenge in the field of magnetoelectric multiferroics is to identify systems that allow a controlled tuning of states displaying distinct magnetoelectric responses. Here we show that the multiferroic ground state of the archetypal multiferroic TbMnO3 is dramatically modified by epitaxial strain. Neutron diffraction reveals that in highly strained films the magnetic order changes from the bulk-like incommensurate bc-cycloidal structure to commensurate magnetic order. Concomitant with the modification of the magnetic ground state, optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) and electric…
We report on TmMnO3 far infrared emissivity and reflectivity spectra from 1910 K to 4 K. At the highest temperature the number of infrared bands is lower than that predicted for centrosymmetric P63/mmc (D6h4) (Z=2) space group due high temperature anharmonicity and possible defect induced bitetrahedra misalignments. On cooling, at ~1600 K TmMnO3 goes from non-polar to an antiferroelectric-ferroelectric polar phase reaching the ferroelectric onset at the ~700 K. The 300 K reflectivity is fitted using 19 oscillators and this number of phonons is maintained down to 4 K. A weak phonon anomaly in t…
The structural, dielectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric (ME) properties of particulate composites containing lead-iron niobate and lead titanate piezoelectric 0.94[PbFe$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$O$_3$]-0.06[PbTi$_{0.5}$O$_3$] (PFN-PT) and Zn-substituted cobalt ferrite magnetostrictive CoFe$_{2-x}$Zn$_{x}$O$_4$ (CF$_{2-x}$Z$_{x}$O); 0.6(PFN-PT)/0.4(CF$_{2-x}$Z$_{x}$O), x=0, 0.025, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 (with ratio of 60 Wt\% ferroelectric and 40 Wt\% ferrite); have been investigated. We investigated the ME voltage coefficient as a complex quantity for all composite samples using the dynamic piezomagnetic coef…
THz polarization control upon generation is a crucially missing functionality. THz spintronic emitters based on the inverse spin Hall effect allow for this by the strict implicit orthogonality between their magnetization state and the emitted polarization. This control was up till now only demonstrated using cumbersome external magnetic field biasing to impose a polarization direction. We present here for the first time an efficient voltage control of the polarization state of terahertz spintronic emitters. Using a ferromagnetic spin pumping multilayer exhibiting simultaneously strong uniaxial…
Hexagonal LuFe2O4 is a promising charge-order (CO) driven multiferroic material with high charge and spin ordering temperatures. The coexisting charge and spin orders on Fe3+/Fe2+ sites result in novel magnetoelectric behaviors, but the coupling mechanism between the charge and spin orders remains elusive. Here, by tuning external pressure, we reveal three correlated spin-charge ordered phases in LuFe2O4: i) a centrosymmetric incommensurate three-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, ii) a non-centrosymmetric incommensurate quasi-two-dimensional CO with ferrimagnetism, and iii) a centrosymmetric…
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
To tune the magnetic properties of hexagonal ferrites, a family of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials, by atomic-scale structural engineering, we studied the effect of structural distortion on the magnetic ordering temperature (TN). Using the symmetry analysis, we show that unlike most antiferromagnetic rare-earth transition-metal perovskites, a larger structural distortion leads to a higher TN in hexagonal ferrites and manganites, because the K3 structural distortion induces the three-dimensional magnetic ordering, which is forbidden in the undistorted structure by symmetry. We also revea…
The aim of this work is to unravel a basic microscopic picture behind complex magnetic properties of hexagonal manganites. For these purposes, we consider two characteristic compounds: YMnO3 and LuMnO3, which form different magnetic structures in the ground state. First, we establish an electronic low-energy model, which describes the behavior of the Mn 3d bands of YMnO3 and LuMnO3, and derive parameters of this model from the first-principles calculations. From the solution of this model, we conclude that, despite strong frustration effects in the hexagonal lattice, the relativistic spin-orbi…

Magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling in the artificial multiferroic heterostructures facilitate valuable features for device applications such as magnetic field sensors and electric write magnetic-read memory devices. In a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, the strain mediated coupling exploits piezoelectricity/electrostriction in ferroelectric phase and magnetostriction/piezomagnetism in ferromagnetic phase. Such verity of these combined effect can be manipulated by an external perturbation, such as electric field, temperature or magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the remo…
The spin-driven component of electric polarization in a single crystal of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ was experimentally investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 41 T. Sequential measurements of electric polarization for various magnetic field directions provide clear evidence of electric polarization normal to the hexagonal $c$ axis (${\bf P}_{\rm t}$) in not only the cycloidal phase, but also the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic phase. The direction of ${\bf P}_{\rm t}$ is directly coupled with the ferromagnetic moment in the canted antiferromagnetic phase, and thus controlled by…
Multiferroics possess two or more switchable states such as polarization, magnetization, etc. Phonon excitations in multiferroic phase are strongly modified by magnetoelectric coupling, spin-phonon coupling, and anharmonic phonon-phonon interactions. Here, we have investigated the correlation between phonons and multiferroic order parameters in hexagonal BaMO3: M = Ti1-x(Mn/Fe)x systems using powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopic, and magnetic measurements. The structural transformation from a polar tetragonal to a non-polar 6H-type hexagonal phase is observed as a function of d…
Antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions generating from the spin-orbit coupling induce various fascinating properties, like magnetoelectric (ME) effect, weak ferromagnetism and non-trivial topological spin textures like skyrmions, in real materials. Compared to their symmetric isotropic exchange counterpart, these interactions are generally of a weaker order of strength, creating modest twisting in the spin structure which results in weak ferromagntism or weak linear ME effect. Our proposed two-sublattice model, in contrast, predicts a hitherto unobserved, charge ordered non-coll…
Abundant phenomena in CoCr2-xMnxO4 (x = 0 ~ 2) samples such as magnetic compensation, magnetostriction and exchange bias effect have been observed and investigated in this work. A structure transition from cubic to tetragonal symmetry has been found in the samples with x around 1.4. It has shown that the doped Mn3+ ions initially occupy the A (Co) sites when x < 0.2, and then mainly take the B1 (Cr) sites. This behavior results in a role conversion of magnetic contributors, and thus a magnetic compensation between two competitively magnetic sublattices at the composition near x = 0.5. Furtherm…
We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both…
The direct domain coupling of spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and net magnetic moment can result in giant magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, which is essential to achieve mutual control and practical applications of multiferroics. Recently, the possible bulk domain coupling, the mutual control of ferroelectricity (FE) and weak ferromagnetism (WFM) have been theoretically predicted in hexagonal LuFeO3. Here, we report the first successful growth of highly-cleavable Sc-stabilized hexagonal Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 (h-LSFO) single crystals, as well as the first visualization of their intrinsic cloverlea…
Important phenomena such as magnetostriction, magnetocaloric, and magnetoelectric effects arise from, or could be enhanced by, the coupling of magnetic and structural degrees of freedom. The coupling of spin and lattice also influence transport and structural properties in magnetic materials in particular around phase transitions. In this paper we propose a method for screening materials for a strong magneto-structural coupling by assessing the effect of the local magnetic configuration on the atomic forces using density functional theory (DFT). We have employed the disordered local moment app…

A new approach to all-optical detection and control of the coupling between electric and magnetic order on ultrafast timescales is achieved using time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) to study a ferroelectric (FE)/ferromagnet (FM) oxide heterostructure. We use femtosecond optical pulses to modify the spin alignment in a Ba$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$TiO$_{3}$(BSTO)/La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) heterostructure and selectively probe the ferroelectric response using SHG. In this heterostructure, the pump pulses photoexcite non-equilibrium quasiparticles in LCMO, which rapidly interact with…
