Materials with magnetoelectric coupling (MEC) between ferroic orders at room temperature are emerging field in modern technology and physics. BaTiO3 is a robust ferroelectric in which several doping has led to MEC. In Ca and Mn modified BaTiO3 has been study with a series of Ba(1-x)Ca(x)Ti(1-y)Mn(y)O3 (x=y= 0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09), in this MEC was only observed in x=0.03. The structural modifications with changing substitution reveal a reduced Ti-O-Ti bond angle for this sample which is the most ferromagnetic in nature. A mixed phase of tetragonal P4mm and hexagonal P63/mmc space groups of BaTiO3 is observed in the substituted samples, with nominal contribution of the hexagonal phase for x=0.03. A valence state study using XPS and XANES reveals the presence of enhanced proportion of Mn3+ ions in the sample which support a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion, thereby supporting the ferroelectricity for x=0.03. Direct evidences of MEC was obtained from magnetoelectric measurements. A magnetoelectric coupling coefficient, αME ~44 mVcm-1Oe-1 was obtained for dc magnetic field of 600 Oe and a 10Hz ac field of 40 Oe. Such MEC was not observed for higher substitution which emphasizes the sensitivity of the structural properties on substitution.
Ferroelectricity in the incommensurate helical magnetic phase (below TN, 43K) of alpha CaCr2O4 has been confirmed by pyroelectric measurements. Magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric coupling exist below TN and are proportional to the square of magnetic field. From symmetry analysis, we suggest that the presence of an external electric field destabilizes the symmetrical 2221' phase and stabilizes 21' symmetry. This provides a unique system in which polarization varies as the fourth-degree of the order-parameter amplitude and exhibit a vanishingly small value below the first-order transition at …
In this work, we report the growth and functional characterizations of multiferroic TbMnO3 thin films grown on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. By performing detailed magnetic and ferroelectric properties measurements, we demonstrate that the multiferroicity of spin origin known in the bulk crystals can be successfully transferred to TbMnO3 thin films. Meanwhile, anomalous magnetic transition and unusual magnetoelectric coupling related to Tb moments are observed, suggesting a modified magnetic configuration of Tb in the films as compared to the bulk counterpart.…
We report observation of surface-defect-induced room temperature multiferroicity - surface ferromagnetism ($M_S$ at 50 kOe $\sim$0.005 emu/g), ferroelectricity ($P_R$ $\sim$2 nC/cm$^2$), and significantly large magnetoelectric coupling (decrease in $P_R$ by $\sim$80\% under $\sim$15 kOe field) - in nanorods (diameter $\sim$100 nm) of double perovskite Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$ compound. In bulk form, this system exhibits multiferroicity only below its magnetic transition temperature $T_N$ $\approx$ 70 K. On the other hand, the oxygen vacancies, formed at the surface region (thickness $\sim$10 nm) of the …
The Haldane spin-chain compound, Tb2BaNiO5, with two antiferromagnetic transitions, one at T1=63K, and the other at T2=25K, has been recently shown by us to be an exotic multiferroic below T2. Here, we report the results of our investigations of Sr doping at the Ba site by magnetization, heat-capacity, magnetoelectric (MDE), and pyrocurrent measurements. An intriguing finding, which we stress, is that the ferroelectricity is lost even for a doping level of 10 atomic percent, though magnetic ordering prevails. The doped specimens however retain significant magnetodielectric behaviour, but with …
Room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroicity has been observed in c-axis oriented GaFeO$_3$ thin films (space group $Pna2_1$), grown on economic and technologically important (100)Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Structural analysis and comprehensive mapping of Ga:Fe ratio across a length scale range of 10$^4$ reveal coexistence of epitaxial and chemical strain. It induces formation of finer magnetic domains and large magnetoelectric coupling - decrease in remanent polarization by $\sim$21\% under $\sim$50 kOe. Magnetic force microscopy reveals presence of both finer ($<…
We report the magnetic, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of polycrystalline iron vanadate(FeVO4), which has been recently found to exhibit multiferroicity in low temperature with noncollinear magnetic orderings. The influence of external magnetic field up to 9T on these properties is systematically investigated. Besides the suppressing effect on the original ferroelectric transition, the strong magnetic field seems to induce a secondary ferroelectric transition at a slight lower temperature. And the corresponding magnetization measurement reveals a field-induced metamagnetic transition …
We present direct evidence of above room temperature magneto-electricity in single-phase Li0.05Ti0.02Ni0.93O with above-ambient antiferromagnetic ordering. Temperature-hysteresis in warming/cooling heat-flow thermograms establishes a discontinuous/first-order nature of the cubic-to-rhombohedral structural change concurring the AFM transition. At TN = 488K, magnetization features a sharp slope-&-curvature discontinuity and dielectric constant shows a peak-anomaly. Room temperature P-E loop measures a large polarization traceable to the Nèel domain walls. We find positive room-temperature magnet…
From the measurement of dielectric, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties we observe simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic transitions around $\sim$600 K in orthorhombic LuFeO$_3$. We also observe suppression of the remanent polarization by $\sim$95\% under a magnetic field of $\sim$15 kOe at room temperature. The extent of suppression of the polarization under magnetic field increases monotonically with the field. These results show that even the orthorhombic LuFeO$_3$ is a room temperature multiferroic of type-II variety exhibiting quite a strong coupling between magnetization and polariz…
Based on measurements of soft x-ray magnetic scattering and symmetry considerations, we demonstrate that the magnetoelectric effect in TbMn$_2$O$_5$ arises from an internal field determined by $\vec{S}_{\vec{q}} \times {\vec{S}_{-\vec{q}}}$ with $\vec{S}_{\vec{q}}$ being the magnetization at modulation vector $\vec{q}$, whereas the magneto-elastic effect in the exchange energy governs the response to external electric fields. Our results set fundamental symmetry constraints on the microscopic mechanism of multiferroicity in frustrated magnets.

Simultaneous co-existence of room-temperature(T) ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in Fe doped BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) is intriguing, as such Fe doping into tetragonal BTO, a room-T ferroelectric (FE), results in the stabilization of its hexagonal polymorph which is FE only below $\sim$80K. Here, we investigate its origin and show that Fe-doped BTO has a mixed-phase room-temperature multiferroicity, where the ferromagnetism comes from the majority hexagonal phase and a minority tetragonal phase gives rise to the observed weak ferroelectricity. In order to achieve majority tetragonal phase (responsib…
Fe doping into BaTiO3, stabilizes the paraelectric hexagonal phase in place of the ferroelectric tetragonal one [P. Pal et al. Phys. Rev. B, 101, 064409 (2020)]. We show that simultaneous doping of Bi along with Fe into BaTiO3 effectively enhances the magnetoelectric (ME) multiferroic response (both ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity) at room-temperature, through careful tuning of Fe valency along with the controlled-recovery of ferroelectric-tetragonal phase. We also report systematic increase in large dielectric constant values as well as reduction in loss tangent values with relatively mod…
Multiferroics where at least two primary ferroic orders are present and coupled in a single system constitute an important class of materials. They attracted special consideration as they present both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multifunctional devices. Here, we present the evidence of multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in alpha-Mn2O3; a unique binary perovskite. Corresponding to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering around 80K, a clear frequency independent transition is observed in the dielectric permittivity. We showed tha…
GaFeO3, AlFeO3 and related oxides are ferrimagnetic exhibiting magnetodielectric effect. There has been no evidence to date for ferroelectricity and hence multiferroicity in these oxides. We have investigated these oxides as well as oxides of the composition Al1-x-yGaxFe1+yO3 (x = 0.2, y = 0.2) for possible ferroelectricity by carrying out pyroelectric measurements. These measurements establish the occurrence of ferroelectricity at low temperatures below the Nèel temperature in these oxides. They also exhibit significant magnetoelectric effect. We have tried to understand the origin of ferroel…
Magnetoelectric compounds with the general formula, Bi0.9-xRxLa0.1FeO3 (R =Gd, Tb, Dy, etc.), have been synthesized. These show the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism, possess high dielectric constant and exhibit magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Such materials may be of great significance in basic as well as applied research.
Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics are key candidate materials towards advancement of smart technology. Here, we employed a simple synthesis approach to address the long-awaited dream of developing ferroelectric and multiferroic 2D materials, specially in the new class of materials called MXenes. The etched Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXene was first synthesized after HF-treatment followed by delamination process for successful synthesis of free-standing Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ film. The free-standing film was then exposed to air at room-temperature as well as heated at different temperature to form TiO$_2$ lay…
Multiferroics are those materials with more than one ferroic order, and magnetoelectricity refers to the mutual coupling between magnetism and electricity. The discipline of multiferroicity has never been so highly active as that in the first decade of the twenty-first century, and it has become one of the hottest disciplines of condensed matter physics and materials science. A series of milestones and steady progress in the past decade have enabled our understanding of multiferroic physics substantially comprehensive and profound, which is further pushing forward the research frontier of this…
Using density functional calculations we explore the properties of as-yet-unsynthesized $3d - 5d$ ordered double perovskites ($A_2BB'$O$_6$) with highly polarizable Bi$^{3+}$ ions on the $A$ site. We find that the Bi$_2$NiReO$_6$ and Bi$_2$MnReO$_6$ compounds are insulating and exhibit a robust net magnetization that persists above room temperature. When the in-plane lattice vectors of the pseudocubic unit cell are constrained to be orthogonal (for example, by coherent heteroepitaxy), the ground states are ferroelectric with large polarization and a very large uniaxial magnetocrystalline aniso…
Here we demonstrate that MnTe epitaxial films with zinc-blend structure and MnTe/ZnTe multilayers should show ferroelectric polarization in antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state and thus belong to multiferroics. Spontaneous ferroelectric polarization results from the bending of highly ionic Mn-Te-Mn bonds induced by magnetostrictive shear strain. Orientation of ferroelectric polarization is coupled with orientation of AFM vector and thus can be controlled by application of the external magnetic field. Due to the clamping of electric and magnetic order parameters, domain structure in MnTe i…
The coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature is very rarely observed. We have been successful in converting ferroelectric PbTiO3 into a magnetoelectric material by partly substituting Fe at the Ti site. The Pb(Fe1-xTix)O3 system exhibits ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ordering at room temperature. Even more remarkably, our results demonstrate a coupling between the two order parameters. Hence it could be a futuristic material to provide cost effective and simple path for designing novel electromagnetic devices.
The amazing possibility of magnetoelectric crystals to cross couple electric and magnetic properties without the need of time-dependent Maxwell's equations has attracted a lot of interest in material science. This enthusiasm has re-emerged during the last decade where magnetoelectric and multiferroic crystals have captivated a tremendous number of studies, mostly driven by the quest of low-power-consumption spintronic devices. While several new candidates have been discovered, the desirable magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature is still sparse and calls for new promising candidates. Her…
Experiments have been performed to measure magnetoelectric properties of room temperature spirally ordered Sr3Co2Fe24O41 hexaferrite slabs. The measured properties include the magnetic permeability, the magnetization and the strain all as a function of the electric field E and the magnetic intensity H. The material hexaferrite Sr3Co2Fe24O41 exhibits broken symmetries for both time reversal and parity. The product of the two symmetries remains unbroken. This is the central feature of these magnetoelectric materials. A simple physical model is proposed to explain the magnetoelectric effect in th…
Discovering materials that display a linear magnetoelectric effect at room temperature is challenge. Such materials could facilitate novel devices based on the electric-field control of magnetism. Here we present simple, chemically intuitive design rules to identify a new class of bulk magnetoelectric materials based on the 'bicolor' layering of $Pnma$ ferrite perovskites, e.g., LaFeO$_3$/ LnFeO$_3$ superlattices for which Ln = lanthanide cation. We use first-principles density-functional theory calculations to confirm these ideas. Additionally, we elucidate the origin of this effect and show …

We demonstrate room temperature ferroelectricity in the epitaxial thin films of magnetoelectric GaFeO3. Piezo-force measurements show a 180o phase shift of piezoresponse upon switching the electric field indicating nanoscale ferroelectricity in epitaxial thin films of gallium ferrite. Further, temperature dependent impedance analysis with and without the presence of an external magnetic field clearly reveals a pronounced magneto-dielectric effect across the magnetic transition temperature. In addition, our first principles calculations show that Fe ions are not only responsible for ferrimagnet…
In this paper, magnetoelectric effects of Sr Z-type hexaferrite, Sr3Fe24Co2O41, at room temperature is measured. The change in remanence magnetization was measured by applying a DC voltage or electric field across a slab of hexaferrite. Changes of ~ 18% in remanence was observed in an electric field of 10,000V/cm implying a similar change in the microwave permeability at frequencies below 3GHz. In these types of measurements high resistivity is critical in order to reduce current flow in the hexaferrite. The resistivity of the hexaferrite was raised to 4.28x10^8 ohm?-cm by annealing under oxyg…
Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting multiferroics that can effectively couple magnetic and polarization (P) orders have great interest for both fundamental research and technological applications in nanoscale, which are, however, rare in nature. In this study, we propose a general mechanism to realize semiconducting 2D multiferroics via vdW heterojunction engineering, as demonstrated in a typical heterostructure consisting of magnetic bilayer CrI3 (bi-CrI3) and ferroelectric monolayer In2Se3. Interestingly, the novel indirect orbital coupling between Se 4p and Cr 3d orbitals, intermediated by …
Hexagonal ferrites (h-RFeO$_3$, R=Y, Dy-Lu) have recently been identified as a new family of multiferroic complex oxides. The coexisting spontaneous electric and magnetic polarizations make h-RFeO$_3$ rare-case ferroelectric ferromagnets at low temperature. Plus the room-temperature multiferroicity and predicted magnetoelectric effect, h-RFeO$_3$ are promising materials for multiferroic applications. Here we review the structural, ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of h-RFeO$_3$. The thin film growth is also discussed because it is critical in making high quality single cr…

The possibility to control the magnetic properties of a material with an electric field at room temperature is highly desirable for modern applications. Moreover, a coupling between magnetic and electric orders within a single material presenting a wide range of exceptional physical properties, such as bismuth iron garnet (BIG), may lead to great advances in the field of spintronic applications. In particular, the combination of the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling with the low damping of spin waves in BIG can allow the control and manipulation of spin waves by an electric field in magnonic devic…
Magnetic phase transitions in multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) induced by magnetic field, epitaxial strain, and composition modification are considered. These transitions from a spatially modulated spin spiral state to a homogenous antiferromagnetic one are accompanied by the release of latent magnetization and a linear magnetoelectric effect that makes BiFeO3-based materials efficient room-temperature single phase multiferroics.
The list of materials systems displaying both electric and magnetic long range order is short. Oxides, however, concentrate numerous examples of multiferroicity with, in some cases, a large magnetoelectric coupling. As a result, a fruitful research field has emerged contemporaneously with the consolidation of spintronic. The synergy between multiferroics and spintronics was meant to be inevitable and hence the characterization of spintronic functionalities in multiferroic materials is rather abundant. The aim of the present chapter is to review the oxide heterostructures where magnetoelectric …
We have observed the magnetoelectric response at room temperature and above in high-resistive ceramics made of multiferroic Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PFN) and PFN-based solid solution 0.91PFN-0.09PbTiO3 (PFN-PT). The value of the paramagnetoelectric (PME) coefficient shows a pronounced maximum near the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition temperature, T_C, and then decreases sharply to zero for T>T_C. The maximal PME coefficient in PFN is about 4x10(-18) s/A. The theoretical description of the PME effect, within the framework of a Landau theory of phase transitions allowing for realistic tem…
There have been a large number of papers on bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) over the past few years, trying to exploit its room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroic properties. Although these are attractive, BiFeO3 is not the ideal multiferroic, due to weak magnetization and the difficulty in limiting leakage currents. Thus there is an ongoing search for alternatives, including such materials as gallium ferrite (GaFeO3). In the present work we report a comprehensive study of the perovskite PbTi1-xPdxO3 with 0 < x < 0.3. Our study includes dielectric, impedance and magnetization measurements, cond…
A dielectric anomaly has been found near the incommensurate to commensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition (TN2=230 K) in YBaCuFeO5 ceramics, a compound which crystallizes in an ordered perovskite structure. The existence of electric polarization below TN2 suggests the magnetism induced charge polarization effect that is also confirmed by its strong magnetic field dependence below TN2. Accordingly, the peak near TN2 of the magnetodielectric effect indicates a maximum of magnetodielectric susceptibility near the spin reorientation transition. Considering the abundance of magnetic compounds …
Single-phase multiferroic materials are usually considered useless because of the weak magnetoelectric effects, low operating temperature, and small electric polarization induced by magnetic orders. As a result, current studies on applications of the magnetoelectric effects are mainly focusing on multiferroic heterostructures and composites. Here we report a room-temperature giant effect in response to external magnetic fields in single-phase multiferroics. A low magnetic field of 1000 Oe applied on the spin-driven multiferroic hexaferrites BaSrCo2Fe11AlO22 and Ba0.9Sr1.1Co2Fe11AlO22 is able t…
Materials with a coexistence of magnetic and ferroelectric order (i.e., multiferroics) provide an efficient route for the control of magnetism by electric fields. Unfortunately, a long-sought room temperature multiferroic with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) orderings is still lacking. Here, we propose that hydrogen intercalation in antiferromagnetic transition metal oxides is a promising way to realize multiferroics with strong magnetoelectric coupling. Taking brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 as an example, we show that hydrogen intercalated SrCoO2.5 displays strong…

We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both…
We have stabilized the α-Fe1.6Ga0.4O3 (Ga doped α-Fe2O3) system in rhombohedral structure. The system has shown magnetically canted ferromagnetic state and ferroelectric properties at room temperature. In first time, we confirm the existence of magneto-electric coupling and multiferro-electric properties at room temperature in the Ga doped α-Fe2O3 system based on the experimental observation of magnetic field controlled electric polarization and electric field controlled magnetization. The α-Fe2O3 system does not exhibit electric field controlled magnetic exchange bias effect, where as Ga dope…
Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ has drawn a lot of research attention due to its contentious room-temperature multiferroicity. Due to the unstability of hexagonal phase in the bulk form, most experimental studies focused on LuFeO$_3$ thin films which can be stabilized by strain using proper substrates. Here we report on the hexagonal phase stabilization, magnetism, and magnetoelectric coupling of bulk LuFeO$_3$ by partial Sc-substitution of Lu. First, our first-principles calculations show that the hexagonal structure can be stabilized by partial Sc substitution, while the multiferroic properties includin…

The goal of this work is to propose the theoretical description of the physical nature and the mechanisms of the aforementioned properties, including room temperature ferromagnetism, phase diagram dependence on the composition x with a special attention to the multiferroic properties at room temperature, including anomalo…
Multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric and magnetic ordering coexist, are of fundamental interest for the development of novel memory devices that allow for electrical writing and non-destructive magnetic readout operation. The great challenge is to create room temperature multiferroic materials with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) orderings. BiFeO3 has been the most heavily investigated single-phase multiferroic to date due to the coexistence of its magnetic order and ferroelectric order at room temperature. However, there is no net magnetic moment …
We report the results of detailed investigations of magnetization, heat-capacity, dielectric, pyrocurrent, and magneto(di)electric measurements on Tb2BaCoO5, belonging to a hither-to-unexplored spin-chain cobaltates family, R2BaCoO5 (R= Rare-earths). The magnetic measurements reveal that this compound exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition at (T_N=) 18.8 K and there is a spin-reorientation beyond 40 kOe below T_N. Dielectric and pyrocurrent data measured as a function of temperature and magnetic-field establish that this compound is a type-II multiferroic material. The most fascinating findi…
Motivated by the discovery of multiferroicity in the geometrically frustrated triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO$_2$ below its Néel temperature $T_N$, we investigate its magnetic and ferroelectric properties using ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Exchange interactions up to the third nearest neighbors in the $ab$ plane, inter-layer interaction and single ion anisotropy constants in CuCrO$_2$ are estimated by series of density functional theory calculations. In particular, our results evidence a hard axis along the [110] direction due to the lattice distortion that takes place …
During the last fifteen years, multiferroic (MF) research communities have been searching for an alternative room temperature MF material with large magnetoelectric (ME) coupling for possible applications in high density electronic components, low heat dissipation memory and logic devices. We have studied Pb(Zr0.20Ti0.80)0.70Pd0.30O3-δ (PZTP30) system with an unusually large (30%) palladium occupancy in B site of PZT. This material exhibited a giant ME coupling coefficient ~0.36 mV/cm.Oe. Interestingly, this is the first time any room temperature single phase compound that showed ME trends, an…
Multiferroics offer exciting opportunities for electric-field control of magnetism. Unfortunately, single-phase multiferroics suitable for such applications at room temperature has not been discovered. Here, we propose the concept of a new type of multiferroics, namely, "asymmetric multiferroic". In asymmetric multiferroics, two locally stable ferroelectric states are not symmetrically equivalent, leading to different magnetic properties between these two states. Furthermore, we predict from first-principles that a Fe-Cr-Mo superlattice with the LiNbO3-type structure is such an asymmetric mult…
