Recently it was discovered that van der Waals-bonded magnetic materials retain long range magnetic ordering down to a single layer, opening many avenues in fundamental physics and potential applications of these fascinating materials. One such material is FePS3, a large spin (S=2) Mott insulator where the Fe atoms form a honeycomb lattice. In the bulk, FePS3 has been shown to be a quasi-two-dimensional-Ising antiferromagnet, with additional features in the Raman spectra emerging below the Neel temperature of approximately 120 K. Using magneto-Raman spectroscopy as an optical probe of magnetic structure, we show that one of these Raman-active modes in the magnetically ordered state is actually a magnon with a frequency of of approximately 3.7 THz (122 cm-1). Contrary to previous work, which interpreted this feature as a phonon, our Raman data shows the expected frequency shifting and splitting of the magnon as a function of temperature and magnetic field, respectively, where we determine the g-factor to be approximately 2. In addition, the symmetry behavior of the magnon is studied by polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy and explained using the magnetic point group of FePS3.
Coherent excitation of magnons is conventionally achieved through Raman scattering processes, in which the difference-frequency components of the driving field are resonant with the magnon energy. Here, we describe mechanisms by which the sum-frequency components of the driving field can be used to coherently excite magnons through two-particle absorption processes. We use the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert formalism to compare the spin-precession amplitudes that different types of impulsive stimulated and ionic Raman scattering processes and their sum-frequency counterparts induce in an antiferromag…
Magnetoelectric materials have generated wide technological and scientific interest because of the rich phenomena these materials exhibit, including the coexistence of magnetic and ferroelectric orders, magnetodielectric behavior, and exotic hybrid excitations such as electromagnons. The multiferroic spinel material, CoCr$_2$O$_4$, is a particularly interesting example of a multiferroic material, because evidence for magnetoelectric behavior in the ferrimagnetic phase seems to conflict with traditional noncollinear-spin-driven mechanisms for inducing a macroscopic polarization. This paper repo…
We have used Raman scattering to investigate the magnetic excitations and lattice dynamics in the prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulators Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. Both compounds exhibit pronounced two-magnon Raman scattering features with different energies, lineshapes, and temperature dependencies, which in part reflect the different influence of long-range frustrating exchange interactions. Additionally, we find strong Fano asymmetries in the lineshapes of low-energy phonon modes in both compounds, which disappear upon cooling below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures. These unusual pho…

Raman spectroscopy is utilized to study the magnetic characteristics of heteroepitaxial NiO thin films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on MgO(100) substrates. For the determination of the Néel temperature, we demonstrate a reliable approach by analyzing the temperature dependence of the Raman peak originating from second-order scattering by magnons. The antiferromagnetic coupling strength is found to be strongly influenced by the growth conditions. The low-temperature magnon frequency and the Néel temperature are demonstrated to depend on the biaxial lattice strain and the degr…
The number of absorption and Raman optical modes for each Wyckoff orbit in the high-temperature tetragonal (I4/mmm) parent lattice of the Ruddlesden-Popper compounds Ca$_3$X$_2$O$_7$, with X=Mn or X=Ti is given. We analyze the effect of sequential perturbations which lower the symmetry to Cmcm and Cmc2$_1$ and finally include magnetic ordering. We determine the power law behavior (within mean field theory) for the cross section for photon absorption and Raman scattering of modes which appear as the symmetry is successively lowered. In the Cmc2$_1$ phase we give a symmetry analysis to discuss t…
In this letter we investigated the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of CaMn7O12 helimagnet from room temperature down to 10 K. The temperature dependence of the Raman mode parameters show remarkable anomalies for both antiferromagnetic and incommensurate transitions that this compound undergoes at low temperatures. The anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition indicate a spin-phonon coupling at higher-temperature magnetic transition in this material, while a magnetostrinction effect at the lower-temperature magnetic transition.
Exfoliated chromium triiodide (CrI$_3$) is a layered van der Waals (vdW) magnetic insulator that consists of ferromagnetic layers coupled through antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange. The resulting permutations of magnetic configurations combined with the underlying crystal symmetry produces tunable magneto-optical phenomena that is unique to the two-dimensional (2D) limit. Here, we report the direct observation of 2D magnons through magneto-Raman spectroscopy with optical selection rules that are strictly determined by the honeycomb lattice and magnetic states of atomically thin CrI$_3$. In …
We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude …

We have performed polarized Raman scattering measurements on WTe$_2$, for which an extremely large positive magnetoresistance has been reported recently. We observe 5 A$_1$ phonon modes and 2 A$_2$ phonon modes out of 33 Raman active modes, with frequencies in good accordance with first-principles calculations. The angular dependence of the intensity of the peaks observed is consistent with the Raman tensors of the $C_{2v}$ point group symmetry attributed to WTe$_2$. Although the phonon spectra suggest neither strong electron-phonon nor spin-phonon coupling, the intensity of the A$_1$ phonon m…
We use a combination of polarized Raman spectroscopy experiment and model magnetism-phonon coupling calculations to study the rich magneto-Raman effect in the two-dimensional (2D) magnet $\mathrm{CrI_3}$. We reveal a novel layered-magnetism-assisted phonon scattering mechanism below the magnetic onset temperature, whose Raman excitation breaks time-reversal symmetry, has an antisymmetric Raman tensor, and follows the magnetic phase transitions across critical magnetic fields, on top of the presence of the conventional phonon scattering with symmetric Raman tensors in $N$-layer $\mathrm{CrI_3}$…
The linear spin-wave theory study of PbFeBO4 spin dynamics is presented. It is shown that the modes observed in Raman scattering experiments below Neel temperature are optical magnon and two-magnon excitations. Based on the magnon energy, two-magnon band lineshape, and Weiss temperature, the consistent set of the exchange coupling constants up the third neighbor is derived and compared with the results of ab initio calculations. The small deviation of the observed two-magnon band from the one-magnon density of states suggests a surprisingly negligible role of magnon-magnon interactions.
We introduce the magnon circular photogalvanic effect enabled by stimulated Raman scattering. This provides an all-optical pathway to the generation of directed magnon currents with circularly polarized light in honeycomb antiferromagnetic insulators. The effect is the leading order contribution to magnon photocurrent generation via optical fields. Control of the magnon current by the polarization and angle of incidence of the laser is demonstrated. Experimental detection by sizeable inverse spin Hall voltages in platinum contacts is proposed.
Controlling edge states of topological magnon insulators is a promising route to stable spintronics devices. However, to experimentally ascertain the topology of magnon bands is a challenging task. Here we derive a fundamental relation between the light-matter coupling and the quantum geometry of magnon states. This allows to establish the two-magnon Raman circular dichroism as an optical probe of magnon topology in honeycomb magnets, in particular of the Chern number and the topological gap. Our results pave the way for interfacing light and topological magnons in functional quantum devices.

We apply torque equilibrium spin wave theory (TESWT) to investigate an anisotropic XXZ antiferromagnetic model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in a triangular lattice. Considering the quasiparticle vacuum as our reference, we provide an accurate analysis of the non-collinear ground state of a frustrated triangular lattice magnet using the TESWT formalism. We elucidate the effects of quantum fluctuations on the ordering wave vector based on model system parameters. We study the single magnon dispersion, the two-magnon continuum using the spectral function, and the Raman spectrum of …
Giant spin Nernst effect in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet due to magnetoelastic coupling-induced gaps and interband transitions between magnon-like bands
Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. T…
Due to the small photon momentum, optical spectroscopy commonly probes magnetic excitations only at the center of the Brillouin zone; however, there are ways to override this restriction. In the case of the distorted kagome quantum magnet Y-kapellasite, Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$, under scrutiny here, the magnon density of states can be accessed over the entire Brillouin zone through three-center magnon excitations. This mechanism is aided by the three different magnetic sublattices and strong short-range correlations in the distorted kagome lattice. The results of THz time-domain experiment…
Spin-phonon coupling, the interaction of spins with surrounding lattice is a key parameter to understand the underlying physics of multiferroics and engineer their magnetization dynamics. Elementary excitations in multiferroic materials are strongly influenced by spin-phonon interaction, making Raman spectroscopy a unique tool to probe these coupling(s). Recently, it has been suggested that the dielectric and magnetic properties of 15R-type hexagonal BaMnO3 are correlated through the spin-lattice coupling. Here, we report the observation of an extensive renormalization of the Raman spectrum of…
We have carried out Raman spectroscopy experiments to investigate two-magnon excitations in epitaxial thin films of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under in-plane misfit strain. With in-plane biaxial compression, the energy of the two-magnon peak increases, and the peak remains observable over a wider temperature range above the Néel temperature, indicating strain-induced enhancement of the superexchange interactions between $\it{J}_{eff}$ = 1/2 pseudospins. From density functional theory calculations, we have found an increase of the nearest-neighbor h…
The hybridization of magnons (spin waves) with phonons, if sufficiently strong and comprising long wavelength excitations, may offer a new playground when manipulating the magnetically ordered systems with light. Applying a magnetic field to a quasi-2D antiferromagnet, FePS3, we tune the magnon-gap excitation towards coincidence with the initially lower-in-energy phonon modes. Hybrid magnon-phonon modes, the magnon polarons are unveiled with demonstration of a pronounced avoided crossing between the otherwise bare magnon and phonon excitations. The magnon polarons in FePS3 are primary traced w…
