We have carried out Raman spectroscopy experiments to investigate two-magnon excitations in epitaxial thin films of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under in-plane misfit strain. With in-plane biaxial compression, the energy of the two-magnon peak increases, and the peak remains observable over a wider temperature range above the Néel temperature, indicating strain-induced enhancement of the superexchange interactions between $\it{J}_{eff}$ = 1/2 pseudospins. From density functional theory calculations, we have found an increase of the nearest-neighbor hopping parameter and exchange interaction with increasing biaxial compressive strain, in agreement with the experimental observations. Our experimental and theoretical results provide perspectives for systematic, theory-guided strain control of the primary exchange interactions in 5$\it{d}$ transition metal oxides.
Iron-based superconducting layered compounds have the second highest transition temperature after cuprate superconductors. Their discovery is a milestone in the history of high-temperature superconductivity and will have profound implications for high-temperature superconducting mechanism as well as industrial applications. Raman scattering has been extensively applied to correlated electron systems including the new superconductors due to its unique ability to probe multiple primary excitations and their coupling. In this review, we will give a brief summary of the existing Raman experiments …
We discuss how to analyze the optical conductivity and Raman spectra of multi-orbital systems using the velocity and the Raman vertices in a similar way Raman vertices were used to disentangle nodal and antinodal regions in cuprates. We apply this method to iron superconductors in the magnetic and non-magnetic states, studied at the mean field level. We find that the anisotropy in the optical conductivity at low frequencies reflects the difference between the magnetic gaps at the X and Y electron pockets. Both gaps are sampled by Raman spectroscopy. We also show that the Drude weight anisotrop…
Based on a two-band model, we study the electronic Raman scattering intensity in both normal and superconducting states of iron-pnictide superconductors. For the normal state, due to the match or mismatch of the symmetries between band hybridization and Raman vertex, it is predicted that overall $B_{1g}$ Raman intensity should be much weaker than that of the $B_{2g}$ channel. Moreover, in the non-resonant regime, there should exhibit a interband excitation peak at frequency $ω\simeq 7.3 t_1 (6.8t_1)$ in the $B_{1g}$ ($B_{2g}$) channel. For the superconducting state, it is shown that $β$-band c…
Although the parent iron-based pnictides and chalcogenides are itinerant antiferromagnets, the use of local moment picture to understand their magnetic properties is still widespread. We study magnetic Raman scattering from a local moment perspective for various quantum spin models proposed for this new class of superconductors. These models vary greatly in the level of magnetic frustration and show a vastly different two-magnon Raman response. Light scattering by two-magnon excitations thus provides a robust and independent measure of the underlying spin interactions. In accord with other rec…
In a fully-gapped superconductor the electronic Raman response has a pair-breaking peak at twice the superconducting gap $Δ$, if the Bogoliubov excitations are uncorrelated. Motivated by the iron based superconductors, we study how this peak is modified if the superconducting phase hosts a nematic-structural quantum critical point. We show that, upon approaching this point by tuning, e.g., doping, the growth of nematic correlations between the quasiparticles transforms the pair-breaking peak into a nematic resonance. The mode energy is below 2$Δ$, and stays finite at the quantum critical point…
The fractionalization of elementary excitations in quantum spin systems is a central theme in current condensed matter physics. The Kitaev honeycomb spin model provides a prominent example of exotic fractionalized quasiparticles, composed of itinerant Majorana fermions and gapped gauge fluxes. However, identification of the Majorana fermions in a three-dimensional honeycomb lattice remains elusive. Here we report spectroscopic signatures of fractional excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we find that the dyna…
Spin-orbit interaction in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ leads to the realization of the $J_{\mathrm{eff}}$ = 1/2 state and also induces an insulating behavior. Using large-shift Raman spectroscopy, we found two high-energy excitations of the d-shell multipletat at 690 meV and 680 meV with $A_{1g}$ and $B_{1g}$ symmetry respectively. As temperature decreases, the $A_{1g}$ and $B_{1g}$ peaks narrow, and the $A_{1g}$ peak shifts to higher energy while the energy of the $B_{1g}$ peak remains the same. When 25$\%$ of Ir is substituted with Rh the $A_{1g}$ peak softens by 10$\%$ but the $B_{1g}$ peak does not. We s…
We calculate the Raman response for the Kitaev spin model on the $\mathcal{H}$-$0$, $\mathcal{H}$-$1$, and $\mathcal{H}$-$\infty$ harmonic honeycomb lattices. We identify several quantitative features in the Raman spectrum that are characteristic of the spin liquid phase. Unlike the dynamical structure factor, which probes both the Majorana spinons and flux excitations that emerge from spin fractionalization, the Raman spectrum in the Kitaev models directly probes a density of states of pairs of fractional, dispersing Majorana spinons. As a consequence, the Raman spectrum in all these models i…
We show that electronic Raman scattering affords a window into the essential properties of the pairing potential $V_{\mathbf{k},\mathbf{k^{\prime}}}$ of iron-based superconductors. In Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ we observe band dependent energy gaps along with excitonic Bardasis-Schrieffer modes characterizing, respectively, the dominant and subdominant pairing channel. The $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry of all excitons allows us to identify the subdominant channel to originate from the interaction between the electron bands. Consequently, the dominant channel driving superconductivity results fro…
We report a polarized Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 7.62 GPa. At ambient pressure, $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ exhibits the hyperhoneycomb crystal structure and a magnetically ordered state of spin-orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 moments that is strongly influenced by bond-directional (Kitaev) exchange interactions. At a critical pressure of ~ 4.1 GPa, the phonon spectrum changes abruptly consistent with the reported structural transition into a monoclinic, dimerized phase. A comparison to the phonon spectra obtained from density functio…
We investigate the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ by means of inelastic Raman scattering. The spectra exhibits a coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 meV and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasi-particles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the `non-Loudon-Fleury' one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently [Phys. Rev. B 104, 144412 (2021)]. The …
BiFeO$_3$ thin films can be epitaxially stabilized in a nearly-tetragonal phase under a high biaxial compressive strain. Here we investigate the polarized Raman spectra of constrained BiFeO$_3$ films with tetragonal-like (BFO-T), rhombohedral-like (BFO-R) and multiphase (BFO-T+R) structure. Based on analysis of the number and symmetry of the Raman lines, we provide strong experimental evidence that the nearly-tetragonal films are monoclinic ($Cc$ symmetry) and not tetragonal $(P4mm)$. Through the Raman mapping technique we show localized coexistence of BFO-T and BFO-R phases with the relative …
We have measured the doping and temperature dependence of lattice vibrations and magnetic excitations in the prototypical doped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ (x=0, 0.015, and 0.10). Our findings show that the pseudospin-lattice coupling -- responsible for the renormalization of several low energy phonon modes -- is preserved even when long-range magnetic order is suppressed by doping. In our most highly doped sample, the single magnon (Gamma-point) excitation disappears while the two-magnon mode softens and becomes heavily damped. Doping induced electron-phonon coupling is …
We study theoretically the Raman scattering response $I(ω)$ in the gapless quantum spin liquid phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The dominant polarization-independent contribution $I_K (ω)$ reflects the density of states of the emergent Majorana fermions in the ground-state flux-sector. The integrability-breaking Heisenberg exchange generates a second contribution, whose dominant part $I_H (ω)$ has the form of a quantum quench corresponding to an abrupt insertion of four $Z_2$ gauge fluxes. This results in a weakly polarization dependent response with a sharp peak at the energy of the flux…
Motivated by properties-controlling potential of the strain, we investigate strain dependence of structure, electronic and magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ using complementary theoretical tools: {\it ab-initio} calculations, analytical approaches (rigid octahedra picture, Slater-Koster integrals), and extended $t-{\mathcal{J}}$ model. We find that strain affects both Ir-Ir distance and Ir-O-Ir angle, and the rigid octahedra picture is not relevant. Second, we find fundamentally different behavior for compressive and tensile strain. One remarkable feature is the formation of two subsets of …
Inelastic light scattering studies on single crystals of (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_x$)$_2$IrO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.05$ and $0.15$) show a polarization independent broad band at $\sim $~2750 cm$^{-1}$ with a large band-width $\sim 1800$~cm$^{-1}$. For Na$_2$IrO$_3$ the broad band is seen for temperatures $ \leq 200$~K and persists inside the magnetically ordered state. For Li doped samples, the intensity of this mode increases, shifts to lower wave-numbers and persists to higher temperatures. Such a mode has recently been predicted (Knolle et.al.) as a signature of the Kitaev spin liquid. We assign the observat…
Superlattices consist of two ferromagnets La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)and SrRuO3(SRO) were grown in (110)-orientation on SrTiO3(STO) substrates. The x-ray diffraction and Raman spectra of these superlattices show the presence of in-plane compressive strain and orthorhombic structure of less than 4 u.c. thick LSMO spacer, respectively. Magnetic measurements reveal several features including reduced magnetization, enhanced coercivity, antiferromagnetic coupling, and switching from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic coupling with magnetic field orientations. These magnetic properties are explained by the …
We report Raman scattering spectra of iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. Upon cooling through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition, we observe a large splitting of the E$_g$ in-plane phonon modes involving Fe and As displacements. The splitting of the in-plane phonons at the transition is strongly reduced upon doping and disappears for $x=0.06$ qualitatively following the trend displayed by the Fe magnetic moment. The origin of the splitting is discussed in terms of magnetic frustration inherent to iron-pnictide sys…
The layered honeycomb lattice iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is the closest realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, primarily due to the enhanced interlayer separation and nearly ideal honeycomb lattice. We report pressure-induced structural evolution of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) up to $\sim$17 GPa and Raman scattering measurements up to $\sim$25 GPa. A structural phase transition (monoclinic $C2/c \: \rightarrow$ triclinic $P\bar{1}$) is observed with a broad mixed phase pressure range ($\sim$4 to 15 GPa). The triclinic phase consists of heavily distorted honeycomb lattic…
We have used polarized Raman scattering to probe lattice vibrations and charge ordering in 12 nm thick, epitaxially strained PrNiO$_3$ films, and in superlattices of PrNiO$_3$ with the band-insulator PrAlO$_3$. A carefully adjusted confocal geometry was used to eliminate the substrate contribution to the Raman spectra. In films and superlattices under tensile strain, which undergo a metal-insulator transition upon cooling, the Raman spectra reveal phonon modes characteristic of charge ordering. These anomalous phonons do not appear in compressively strained films, which remain metallic at all …
We report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of epitaxially-strained $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$ thin films. The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (…
We report on the growth of stoichiometric Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ single crystals, which allow us to unveil their intrinsic magnetic properties. The effect of different growth conditions has been investigated for crystals grown by the flux method. We find that the magnetic response depends very sensitively on the details of the growth conditions. We assess the defect concentration based on magnetization, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical conductivity measurements. We find that samples with a low concentration of electronically active defects show much reduced in-gap spectral weight in the…
The recently discovered layered BiS2-based superconductors have attracted a great deal of interest due to their structural similarity to cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors. We have performed Raman scattering measurements on two superconducting crystals NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 (Tc = 4.5 K) and NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 (Tc = 4.8 K). The observed Raman phonon modes are assigned with the aid of first-principles calculations. The asymmetrical phonon mode around 118 cm-1 reveals a small electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling constant 0.16, which is insufficient to generate superconductivity at ~ 4.5 K. In the Raman sp…
We calculate the two-magnon Raman scattering spectra in antiferromagnetic phases of several frustrated spin models defined on the honeycomb lattice. These include the Néel antiferromagnetic phase of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ model and the stripe phase of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model. We show that both the magnetic frustration and the anisotropy of interactions may significantly affect the Raman spectra. We further discuss the implications of our results to the magnetic excitations of the iron-based compound BaFe$_2$Se$_2$O and show how the magnetic interactions can be extracted from fit to the Raman …
We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibi…
Protected by the interplay of on-site Coulomb interactions and spin-orbit coupling, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ at high pressure is a rare example of a Mott insulator with a paramagnetic ground state. Here, using optical Raman scattering, we measure both the phonon and magnon evolution in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ under pressure, and identify three different magnetically-ordered phases, culminating in a spin-disordered state beyond 18 GPa. A strong first-order structural phase transition drives the magnetic evolution at $\sim$10 GPa with reduced structural anisotropy in the IrO$_6$ cages, leading to increasingly isotro…
Spin-orbit entangled pseudospins hold promise for a wide array of exotic magnetism ranging from a Heisenberg antiferromagnet to a Kitaev spin liquid depending on the lattice and bonding geometry, but many of the host materials suffer from lattice distortions and deviate from idealized models in part due to inherent strong pseudospin-lattice coupling. Here, we report on the synthesis of a magnetic superlattice comprising the single ($n$=1) and the double ($n$=2) layer members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ alternating along the $c$-axis, and provide a comp…
We present magnetization measurements on polycrystalline $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3~GPa and construct the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. Our data confirm that magnetic order breaks down in a first-order phase transition at $p_{\rm{c}}$ $\approx$ 1.4~GPa and additionally reveal a step-like feature -- magnetic signature of structural dimerization -- that appears at $p_{\rm{c}}$ and shifts to higher temperatures upon further compression. Following the structural study by L. S. I. Veiga et al. [Phys. Rev. B 100, 064104 (2019)], we suggest that a par…
We study the two-magnon non-resonant Raman scattering in the (pi,pi) and (pi,0) ordered antiferromagnetic phases of a J1x-J1y-J2-Jc Heisenberg model on the tetragonal lattice within the framework of the spin-wave theory. We discuss the effects of various tuning factors to the two-magnon Raman spectra. We find that both the magnetic frustration J2/J1 and the interlayer exchange coupling Jc may significantly affect the spectra in both the B1g and A1g' channels in the (pi,pi) Neel ordered phase. Moreover, we find a splitting of the two-magnon peak in the (pi,0) antiferromagnetic phase. We further…
We argue that the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of the hard x-ray Raman scattering (XRS) could be used as an element selective probe of local spin polarization. The magnitude of the XRS-MCD signal is directly proportional to the local spin polarization when the angle between the incident wavevector and the magnetization vector is $135^{\circ}$ or $-45^{\circ}$. By comparing the experimental observation and the configuration interaction calculation at the $L_{2,3}$ and $M_{2,3}$ edges of ferromagnetic iron, we suggest that the integrated MCD signal in terms of the transferred energy could b…
We report Raman scattering measurements on iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with varying cobalt $x$ content. The electronic Raman continuum shows a strong spectral weight redistribution upon entering the magnetic phase induced by the opening of the Spin Density Wave (SDW) gap. It displays two spectral features that weaken with doping, which are assigned to two SDW induced electronic transitions. Raman symmetry arguments are discussed to identify the origin of these electronic transitions in terms of orbital ordering in the magnetic phase. Our data do …
Recently H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been reported as a spin-orbital entangled quantum spin liquid (QSL) [K. Kitagawa et al., Nature {\bf 554}, 341 (2018)], albeit its connection to Kitaev QSL has not been yet identified. To unveil the related Kitaev physics, we perform the first Raman spectroscopy studies on single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ samples. We implement a soft chemical replacement of Li$^+$ with H$^+$ from $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ single crystals to synthesize the single crystal samples of the iridate second generation H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. The Raman spectroscopy can be used to diagnose the Q…
We investigate the crystal structure and lattice vibrations of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by a combined phonon Raman scattering and x-ray powder diffraction experiment under pressures up to $66$ GPa and room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) and $ab$-initio lattice dynamics calculations were also carried out. A first-order structural phase transition associated with an $8$ % collapse of the $c$-axis is observed at high pressures, with phase coexistence being observed between $\sim 40$ and $55$ GPa. At lower pressures, lattice and phonon anomalies were observed, reflecting crossovers between isos…
Non-resonant Raman spectroscopy in the hard X-ray regime has been used to explore the electronic structure of the first two members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_n$O$_{3n+1}$ of iridates. By tuning the photon energy transfer around 530 eV we have been able to explore the oxygen K near edge structure with bulk sensitivity. The angular dependence of the spectra has been exploited to assign features in the 528-535 eV energy range to specific transitions involving the Ir 5d orbitals. This has allowed us to extract reliable values for both the t2g-eg splitting arising from the cubic…
We study the iron-pnictide compound BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ for x $\sim$0.23, with a doping concentration near quantum criticality and enhanced nematic fluctuating state in the doping-temperature phase diagram. Transport measurements confirm the presence of a magneto-structural transition at 60K from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic phase, followed by a superconducting transition below 16K. The temperature and polarisation dependent Raman spectra reveal that there is a phonon mode at 211 cm$^{-1}$, followed by two broad modes (BM) between 400 and 700 cm$^{-1}$, having an energy differe…
Ba2YIrO6, a Mott insulator, with four valence electrons in Ir5+ d-shell (5d4) is supposed to be non-magnetic, with Jeff = 0, within the atomic physics picture. However, recent suggestions of non-zero magnetism have raised some fundamental questions about its origin. Focussing on the phonon dynamics, probed via Raman scattering, as a function of temperature and different incident photon energies, as an external perturbation. Our studies reveal strong renormalization of the phonon self-energy parameters and integrated intensity for first-order modes, especially redshift of the few first-order mo…
