We have studied the magnetodielectric and magnetoelastic coupling in TbFe3(BO3)4 single crystals by means of capacitance, magnetostriction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The data reveal strong magnetic field effects on the dielectric constant and on the macroscopic sample length which are associated to long range magnetic ordering and a field-driven metamagnetic transition. We discuss the coupling of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic order parameters and attribute the origin of the magnetodielectric coupling to phonon mode shifts according to the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller (LST) relation.
The existence of a magnetodielectric (magnetocapacitance) effect is often used as a test for multiferroic behavior in new material systems. However, strong magnetodielectric effects can also be achieved through a combination of magnetoresistance and the Maxwell-Wagner effect, unrelated to multiferroic coupling. The fact that this resistive magnetocapacitance does not require multiferroic materials may be advantageous for some practical applications. Conversely, it also implies that magnetocapacitance per se is not sufficient to establish multiferroic coupling.
Dielectric constant measurement under magnetic field is an efficient technique to study the coupling between charges and spins in insulating materials. For magnetic oxides, the geometric frustration is known to be a key ingredient to observe such a coupling. Measurements for the triangular Ising-like cobaltite Ca3Co2O6 have been made. Single crystals of Ca3Co2O6 are found to exhibit a magnetodielectric effect below TN=25K with a peak in the e(H) curve at the ferri to ferromagnetic transition. This relation between e and magnetization has been modelized by using two order parameters in an energ…
We report the results of our investigation of magnetic, thermodynamic and dielectric properties of Ca substituted half-doped orthochromite, Dy0.6Ca0.4Fe0.5Cr0.5O3. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data bring out that this compound undergoes two antiferromagnetic transitions, one at ~132 and the other at ~22 K. These values are higher than those of DyFe0.5Cr0.5O3. This finding highlights that non-magnetic hole doping in form of Ca+2 in the place of magnetic Dy+3 tends to enhance magnetic transition temperatures in this half-doped orthochromite. We attribute it to possible change in the…
We report on a heretofore unnoted giant negative magnetocapacitance (>20%) in non-magnetic Au/GaAs:Si Schottky barriers that we attribute to a magnetic field in-duced increase in the binding energy of the shallow donor Si impurity atoms. Depletion capacitance (Cdep) dispersion identifies the impurity ionization and capture processes that give rise to a magnetic field dependent density of ionized impurities. Internal photoemission experiments confirm that the large field-induced shifts in the built-in potential, inferred from 1/Cdep^2 vs voltage measurements, are not due to a field-dependent Sc…
We have investigated the dielectric anomalies associated with spin ordering transitions in the tetragonal spinel Mn$_3$O$_4$, using thermodynamic, magnetic, and dielectric measurements. We find that two of the three magnetic ordering transitions in Mn$_3$O$_4$ lead to decreases in the temperature dependent dielectric constant at zero applied field. Applying a magnetic field to the polycrystalline sample leaves these two dielectric anomalies practically unchanged, but leads to an increase in the dielectric constant at the intermediate spin-ordering transition. We discuss possible origins for th…
We report an observation of room temperature magnetodielectric (RTMD) effect in Mn doped LaGaO3. Results of frequency dependent magnetoresistance (FDMR) measurements discards the possibility of any magnetoresistive contribution in the observed MD effect. The intrinsic nature of MD coupling has been validated/evidenced by means of magnetic field dependent Raman spectroscopy and explained in terms of modified volume strain governed by magnetic field induced rerotation of spin coupled Mn-orbitals. Ultimately, present RTMD effect is attributed to magneto-compression/magnetostriction associated wit…
The structural, phonon, magnetic, dielectric, and magneto dielectric responses of the pure bulk Brownmillerite compound Ca2FeCoO5 are reported. This compound showed giant magneto dielectric response (10%-24%) induced by strong spin-lattice coupling across its spin reorientation transition (150-250 K). The role of two Debye temperatures pertaining to differently coordinated sites in the dielectric relaxations is established. The positive giant magneto-dielectricity is shown to be a direct consequence of the modulations in the lattice degrees of freedom through applied external field across the …
Magnetoelastic coupling, i.e., the change of crystal lattice induced by a spin order, is not only scientifically interesting, but also technically important. In this work, we propose a general microscopic model from first-principles calculations to describe the magnetoelastic coupling and provide a way to construct the microscopic model from density functional theory calculations. Based on this model, we reveal that there exists a previously unexpected contribution to the electric polarization induced by the spin-order in multiferroics due to the combined effects of magnetoelastic coupling and…
In this paper the structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of langasite compound Pb$_3$TeMn$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ have been investigated as a candidate of short-range magnetic correlations driven development of dielectric anomaly above N$\acute{e}$el temperature of ($T_N$=) 7 K. Presence of dielectric anomaly, structural phase transition and a short range magnetic correlation at the same temperature (at around 100 K) as well as magnetic field dependent capacitance clearly indicate that this compound shows magnetodielectric coupling at around 100 K. In addition, unusual behaviour is observed …
We report on the effects of spin fluctuations, magnetic ordering, and external magnetic field on the dielectric constant of the ferromagnet SeCuO3, and the antiferromagnet TeCuO3. A model based on the coupling between uniform polarization and the q-dependent spin-spin correlation function is presented to explain the different behaviors for these isostructural compounds. The large magnetocapacitance near the transition temperature in the ferromagnet SeCuO3 suggests routes to enhancing the magnetodielectric response for practical applications.
We report coupling between magnetic and electric orders for antiferromagnetic polycrystalline FeVO4 in which magnetism-induced polarization has been recently found in noncollinear antiferromagnetic state below the second antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN2=15.7K. In this low symmetry phase space group P-1, the magnetic field dependence of electric polarization evidences a clear magnetoelectric coupling in the noncollinear spin-configured antiferromagnetic phase. The discontinuity of magnetodielectric effect observed at the vicinity of the polar to nonpolar transition evidences competitio…
Multiferroicity and magnetodielectric coupling in metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) is rare and so far restricted mainly to formate-based systems with perovskite structure. In the course of this work we designed a tetragonal framework [Co(C16H15N5O2)], exhibiting spin-chains of Co2+ ions, which are bridged by an organic linker containing a dipolar nitrobenzene moiety. This compound shows relaxor-like ferroelectricity at 100 K, which is followed by the onset of complex magnetic order at 15 K, indicative of weak ferromagnetism. The clear anomaly of the dielectric constant at the magnetic ordering …
A method is developed which allows to determine the first-order and the second-order magnetoelastic coefficients of a magnetic bulk material from the ab-initio calculation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy as function of a prestrain. Excplicit results are given for bcc Fe, and they agree well with experimental data obtained from the magnetostrictive stress measurements for epitaxial Fe films.
We report magnetic, dielectric and magnetodielectric responses of pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially-disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this system intrinsically is a true multiglass with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150 - 300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative spin orientations between ne…
Dielectric materials with tunable permittivity are highly desirable for wireless communication, radar technology. However, the tunability of dielectric properties in the microwave frequency range and higher is an immense challenge for conventional materials. Here, we demonstrate a giant magnetodielectric effect in the GHz region in a metamaterial based on ferrite unit cells. The effect is derived from the coupling of the ferromagnetic resonance and the Mie resonance in the ferrite unit cells. Both the simulated and experimental results indicate that the effective permittivity of the metamateri…
Field-tunable partial antiferromagnetism, glassy spin dynamics, and magnetodielectric coupling in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain compound Ca3CoIrO6
Analytical expressions for the magnetoelastic anisotropy constants of cubic magnetic systems are derived for rectangular and oblique distortions originating from epitaxial growth on substrates with lower crystal symmetry. In particular, the temperature variation of the magnetic properties of magnetic films grown on barium titanate (BaTiO3) substrates are explained in terms of strain-induced magnetic anisotropies caused by the temperature dependent phase transitions of BaTiO3. Our results quantify the experimental observations in ferromagnet/\bto-based structures, which have been proposed as te…
Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured on a single crystal of the magnetoelectric ferrimagnetic compound Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. The fits of the infrared phonons show a magnetodielectric effect near the transition temperature ($T_{c}\sim 60$~K). Assignments to strong far infrared phonon modes have been made, especially those exhibi…
Two kinds of specimens, with the major phase of Sr3Co2Fe24O41 (Sr3Co2Z) and SrCo2Fe16O27 (SrCo2W) hexaferrites respectively, were fabricated through solid-state reaction. The phase composition, magnetic and dielectric properties, magnetodielectric (MD) effect, magnetoelectric (ME) effect and pyroelectric properties were studied. Results show that magnetic and dielectric anomalies are induced by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) transition. They can be considered as characteristic properties (e.g., Sr3Co2Z at 370 K) but are not a sufficient condition for the MD and ME coupling. The T-bloc…
Antiferromagnetic Bi_{2}Fe_{4}O_{9} (BFO), lightly substituted by cobalt is studied for magnetodielectricity. The substitution causes a substantial decrease in the Neel temperature (T_N) from 250 K (in parent sample, BFO) to 152 K (in 2% Co substituted sample). At the same time, the substituted samples display a pronounced irreversibility in the ZFC-FC magnetization data for T $<$ 370 K and opening of hysteresis in the M-H plot, thus signifying the onset of weak ferromagnetism (FM) and magnetic glassiness. The induced magnetic glassiness is found to slow down the dynamics such that the magneti…
High-quality single crystals of CoTiO$_3$ are grown and used to elucidate in detail structural and magnetostructural effects by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization measurements. In addition, we refine the single-crystal structure of the ilmenite ($R\bar{3}$) phase. At the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$, pronounced $λ$-shaped anomaly in the thermal expansion coefficients signals shrinking of both the $c$ and $b$ axes, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling with uniaxial …
We present a laterally resolved X-ray magnetic dichroism study of the magnetic proximity effect in a highly ordered oxide system, i.e. NiO films on Fe3O4(110). We found that the magnetic interface shows an ultrasharp electronic, magnetic and structural transition from the ferrimagnet to the antiferromagnet. The monolayer which forms the interface reconstructs to NiFe2O4 and exhibits an enhanced Fe and Ni orbital moment, possibly caused by bonding anisotropy or electronic interaction between Fe and Ni cations. The absence of spin-flop coupling for this crystallographic orientation can be explai…
A large spin-orbit coupling is a way to control strong magnetodielectric (MD) coupling in a higher d-orbital materials. However reports are rare on such compounds due to often leaky conductive behavior. Here, we demonstrate MD coupling in a Ru-based 6H-perovskite system, Ba3NdRu2O9. The rare-earth ion in a 6H-perovskite makes the system insulating enough to carry out MD investigation. The compound is ferromagnetically ordered below 24 K (TC), followed by another magnetic feature at T~ 17 K (T2). The dielectric constant clearly traces the magnetic ordering, manifesting a peak at the onset of TC…
The realization of intertwined ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) lattices is of great interest for broad nanoscale applications, but still remains a remarkable challenge. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize the strongly coupled ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity by carrier doping. We demonstrate that prototypical 2D \b{eta}-PbO is dynamically, thermally and mechanically stable. Under hole doping, 2D \b{eta}-PbO possesses ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity simultaneously. Moreover, the robustness of ferromagnetic and ferroelastic orders are doping tunabl…
We present a large magnetodielectric (MD) effect of 65 % at 100 kHz with 5 T field in B-site ordered La2CoMnO6 (LCMO) polycrystalline sample. Frequency and temperature dependent impedance and dielectric studies under magnetic field divulge both intrinsic and extrinsic origins for the observed MD effect. The temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy measurement has shown spin-lattice coupling that supports the intrinsic origin of the observed large MD response in LCMO. Extrinsic contributions to MD response mainly originate from disorder and interface effects; here, we signify this by hole carri…
We show that the magnetoelastic coupling between the magnetization and the amplitude of a short wavelength phonon enables the existence of a first order premartensitic transition from a bcc to a micromodulated phase in $Ni_{2}MnGa$. Such a magnetoelastic coupling has been experimentally evidenced by AC susceptibility and ultrasonic measurements under applied magnetic field. A latent heat around 9 J/mol has been measured using a highly sensitive calorimeter. This value is in very good agreement with the value predicted by a proposed model.
The dielectric properties of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ magnetic nanoparticles with an insulating coating layer of SiO$_{2}$ were investigated. At high temperatures, the changes of the dielectric constant and loss induced by the magnetic field are opposite in sign and strongly frequency-dependent, which originates from extrinsic magnetodielectric coupling-the Maxwell-Wagner effect combined with magnetoresistance. And the interface defects leads to the obvious hysteresis phenomena observed in the measurements. On the other hand, the strong coupling of dielectric and magnetic properties at low temperatures…
Multiferroics is a class of functional materials that simultaneously exhibit ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism in a single structure. We report here the integration of anti-ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism in a new M-type hexaferrite compound, in which 0.3 Sr ions was substituted by 0.2 La3+ ions in SrFe12O19 so as to keep the charge balance. This doped compound is expressed as a molecular formula of La0.2Sr0.7Fe12O19, which was confirmed by XRD to have the same structure as SrFe12O19 with a lattice contraction of 0.59%. Surprisingly, the doping effect turns La0.2Sr0.7Fe12O19 from ferroel…
We report measurements of the in-plane magnetoelastic coupling in ultra-thin Ta|CoFeB|MgO layers as a function of uniaxial strain, conducted using a four-point bending apparatus. For annealed samples, we observe a strong dependence on the thickness of the CoFeB layer in the range 1.3-2.0 nm, which can be modeled as arising from a combination of effective surface and volume contributions to the magnetoelastic coupling. We point out that if similar thickness dependence exists for magnetoelastic coupling in response to biaxial strain, then the standard Néel model for the magnetic anisotropy energ…
Multiferroics where at least two primary ferroic orders are present and coupled in a single system constitute an important class of materials. They attracted special consideration as they present both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multifunctional devices. Here, we present the evidence of multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in alpha-Mn2O3; a unique binary perovskite. Corresponding to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering around 80K, a clear frequency independent transition is observed in the dielectric permittivity. We showed tha…
Magnetoelectric coupling in the polycrystalline antiferromagnets CuFe0.95Rh0.05O2 and CuFeO2 has been investigated. For both samples, electric polarization was observed in the absence of an applied external magnetic field demonstrating that for multiferroic research ceramics are worth to be studied. The observed magnetodielectric effect for CuFe0.95Rh0.05O2 in the electrically polar phase supports the existence of a noncollinear antiferromagnetic state. Interestingly, the electric polarization of this sample can be suppressed by a magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the relative magn…

We have demonstrated magnetodielectric (MD) coupling in an Ising-chain magnet Sr2Ca2CoMn2O9, via detailed investigation of ac susceptibility and dielectric constant as a function of temperature, magnetic field and frequency. Sr2Ca2CoMn2O9 consists of spin-chains, made of the regular stacking of one CoO6 trigonal prism with two MnO6 octahedra. The (Co2+ Mn4+ Mn4+) unit stabilizes a (up-down-up) spin-state along the chains which are distributed on a triangular lattice. This compound undergoes a partially disordered antiferromagnetic transition at TN ~ 28 K. The dielectric constant exhibits a cle…
Compressively strained epitaxial (001) EuTiO3 thin films of tetragonal symmetry have been deposited on (001) (LaAlO3)_0.29-(SrAl_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}O3)_0.71 (LSAT) substrates by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. Enhancement of the Neel temperature by 1 K with 0.9% compressive strain was revealed. The polar phonons ofthe films have been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by means of infrared reflectance spectroscopy. All three infrared active phonons show strongly stiffened frequencies compared to bulk EuTiO3 in accordance with first principles calculations. The phonon freque…
We report the results of detailed investigations of magnetization, heat-capacity, dielectric, pyrocurrent, and magneto(di)electric measurements on Tb2BaCoO5, belonging to a hither-to-unexplored spin-chain cobaltates family, R2BaCoO5 (R= Rare-earths). The magnetic measurements reveal that this compound exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition at (T_N=) 18.8 K and there is a spin-reorientation beyond 40 kOe below T_N. Dielectric and pyrocurrent data measured as a function of temperature and magnetic-field establish that this compound is a type-II multiferroic material. The most fascinating findi…
The role of rare-earth (R) ions on the magnetodielectric (MD) coupling is always intriguing and markedly different for different systems. Although many reports are available concerning this aspect in frustrated 3d-transition metal oxides, no such reports exist on higher d (4d/5d)-orbital based systems due to the rare availability of highly insulating 4d/5d-systems. Here, we systematically investigated the magnetic, dielectric, ferroelectric and magnetodielectric behavior of the 6H-perovskites Ba3RRu2O9 for different R-ions, namely, R= Sm, Tb and Ho, which magnetically order at 12, 9.5 and 10.2…
Exchange interactions in α- and γ-Fe are investigated within an ab-initio spin spiral approach. We have performed total energy calculations for different magnetic structures as a function of lattice distortions, related with various cell volumes and the Bain tetragonal deformations. The effective exchange parameters in γ-Fe are very sensitive to the lattice distortions, leading to the ferromagnetic ground state for the tetragonal deformation or increase of the volume cell. At the same time, the magnetic-structure-independent part of the total energy changes very slowly with the tetragonal defo…

Clear anomalies in the lattice thermal expansion (deviation from linear variation) and elastic properties (softening of the sound velocity) at the antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition are observed in the prototypical multiferroic BiFeO3 using a combination of picosecond acoustic pump-probe and high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments. Similar anomalies are also evidenced using first-principles calculations supporting our experimental findings. Those calculations in addition to a simple Landau-like model we also developed allow to understand the elastic softening and lattice chang…
We have investigated the magnetic, dielectric and magnetodielectric (MDE) behavior of a geometrically frustrated spin-chain system, Ca3Co1.4Rh0.6O6, in the single crystalline form for different orientations. The results bring out that the magnetic behavior of this compound is by itself interesting in the sense that this compound exhibits an anisotropic glassy-like magnetic behavior with a huge frequency dependence of ac susceptibility peak for an orientation along the spin-chain in the range 30-60 K; this behavior is robust to applications of large external magnetic fields (H) unlike in canoni…
The research on multiferrocity and magnetoelectric coupling in metal-organic system is rare. Very few hybrid organic-inorganic frameworks (HOIF) exhibit direct magnetoelectric coupling (coupling between spins and dipoles) and also restricted to particular COOH-based system. We show how one can design a hybrid system to obtain such coupling based on the rational design of the organic ligands. The layered phosphonate, MnO3PC6H5.H2O, consisting of perovskite layers stacked with organic phenyl layers, is used as a starting potential candidate. To introduce dipole moment, a closely related metal-ph…
The strong coupling between spin, lattice and electronic degrees of freedom in magnetic materials can produce interesting phenomena, including multiferroic and magnetodielectric (MD) behavior, and exotic coupled excitations, such as electromagnons. We present a temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent inelastic light (Raman) scattering study that reveals the emergence of vibronic modes, i.e., coupled vibrational and crystal-electric-field (CEF) electronic excitations, in the unconventional rare-earth MD material, $\text{Ce}_2\text{O}_3$. The energies and intensities of these emergent vibronic…
The multiferroic properties of EuTiO3 are greatly enhanced when a sample is strained, signifying that coupling between strain and structural, magnetic or ferroelectric order parameters is extremely important. Here resonant ultrasound spectroscopy has been used to investigate strain coupling effects, as well as possible additional phase transitions, through their influence on elastic and anelastic relaxations that occur as a function of temperature between 2 and 300 K and with applied magnetic field up to 14 T. Antiferromagnetic ordering is accompanied by acoustic loss and softening, and a weak…
Temperature dependent X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies were carried out on the flux grown single crystals of gallium ferrite with Ga:Fe ratio of 0.9:1.1. Site occupancy calculations from the Rietveld refinement of the X-ray data led to the estimated magnetic moment of ~0.60 \muB /f.u. which was in good agreement with the experimental data. Combination of these two measurements indicates that there is no structural phase transition in the material between 18 K to 700 K. A detailed line shape analysis of the Raman mode at ~375 cm^-1 revealed a discontinuity in the peak position …
The dielectric behavior of the single crystals of the spin-chain system Ca3Co2O6, undergoing geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic ordering below 25 K, has been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field (H) and compared with magnetization (M) behavior. The results provide evidence for anisotropic magnetodielectric (MDE) coupling in this compound. Ac susceptibility exhibits a strong frequency dependence for H parallel c with changes of this feature with the application of external dc magnetic field. No feature in ac susceptibility could be observed for H perpendicular c,…
The 6H-perovskites Ba$_3$RRu$_2$O$_9$ (R = rare earth element) demonstrate the magnetodielectric (MD) coupling as a manifestation of $4d - 4f$ magnetic interactions. Here, we have reported a detailed study of the structural, magnetic, heat capacity, and MD properties of the 6H-perovskite Ba$_3$GdRu$_2$O$_9$. The signature of long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering $\sim$ 14.8 K ($T_N$) is evident from the magnetization and heat capacity studies. The $T_N$ shifts towards the lower temperature side, apart from splitting in two with the application of the magnetic field. Field-dependent magne…
The Haldane spin-chain compound, Tb2BaNiO5, has been known to order antiferromagnetically below (T_N= ) 63 K. The present magnetic studies on the polycrystals bring out that there is another magnetic transition at a lower temperature (T_2= ) 25 K, with a pronounced magnetic-field induced metamagnetic and metaelectric behavior. Multiferroic features are found below T_2 only, and not at T_N. The most intriguing observation is that the observed change of dielectric constant is intrinsic and largest (e.g., about 18% at 15 K) within this Haldane spin-chain family, R2BaNiO5. Taking into account that…
Magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling in the artificial multiferroic heterostructures facilitate valuable features for device applications such as magnetic field sensors and electric write magnetic-read memory devices. In a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, the strain mediated coupling exploits piezoelectricity/electrostriction in ferroelectric phase and magnetostriction/piezomagnetism in ferromagnetic phase. Such verity of these combined effect can be manipulated by an external perturbation, such as electric field, temperature or magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the remo…
We report the magnetic, heat-capacity, dielectric and magnetodielectric (MDE) behaviour of a Haldane spin-chain compound containing light rare-earth ion, Nd2BaNiO5, in detail, as a function of temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) down to 2 K. In addition to the well-known long range antiferromagnetic order setting in at (T_N=) 48 K as indicated in dc magnetization (M), we have observed another magnetic transition near 10 K; this transition appears to be of a glassy-type which vanishes with a marginal application of external magnetic field (even H= 100 Oe). There are corresponding anomalies i…
The influence of epitaxial strain on uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of Co$_{2}$FeSi (CFS) and Co$_{2}$MnSi (CMS) Heusler alloy thin films grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and MgO is reported. The in-plane biaxial strain is susceptible to tune by varying the thickness of the films on STO, while on MgO the films show in-plane easy axis for magnetization (\overrightarrow{M}) irrespective of their thickness. A variational analysis of magnetic free energy functional within the Stoner-Wohlfarth coherent rotation model with out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy for the films on STO showed the presence of magn…
Our measured dielectric constant and mechanical response of multiferroic BiFeO3 indicate four phase transitions below room temperature. Features correlate with those reported at 50K (from a peak in the zero-field-cooled magnetic susceptibility) and 230K (from splitting between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled magnetic data[1], and 200K (from magnon light scattering cross sections[2]). The primary order parameter is not the polarization in any of the low-T transitions. Instead, the transition near 230 K shows strong elastic coupling, while that at 50K is fundamentally magnetic, but magnetostr…
