Magnetoelastic coupling, i.e., the change of crystal lattice induced by a spin order, is not only scientifically interesting, but also technically important. In this work, we propose a general microscopic model from first-principles calculations to describe the magnetoelastic coupling and provide a way to construct the microscopic model from density functional theory calculations. Based on this model, we reveal that there exists a previously unexpected contribution to the electric polarization induced by the spin-order in multiferroics due to the combined effects of magnetoelastic coupling and piezoelectric effect. Interestingly and surprisingly, we find that this lattice deformation contribution to the polarization is even larger than that from the pure electronic and ion-displacement contributions in BiFeO3. This model of magnetoelastic coupling can be generally applied to investigate the other magnetoelastic phenomena.
We present calculations of magnetostriction constants for the spinel ferrites CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 using density functional theory within the GGA+U approach. Special emphasis is devoted to the influence of different possible cation distributions on the B site sublattice of the inverse spinel structure on the calculated elastic and magnetoelastic constants. We show that the resulting symmetry-lowering has only a negligible effect on the elastic constants of both systems as well as on the magnetoelastic response of NiFe2O4, whereas the magnetoelastic response of CoFe2O4 depends more strongly on t…
We present a simple methodology to compute the spontaneous volume magnetostriction with first-principles calculations on the basis of the magnetoelastic energy. This method makes use of deformations of the unit cell only at the ferromagnetic state. Hence, it does not require the difficult first-principles calculation of the equilibrium volume at the paramagnetic state. To validate this methodology, we apply it to body-centered cubic Fe and face-centered cubic Ni single crystals, finding consistent results with experiment and previous first-principles calculations. The simplicity and reliabilit…
Quantification of electronic and magnetoelastic mechanisms of first-order magnetic phase transitions from first principles: application to caloric effects in La(Fe$_x$Si$_{1-x}$)$_{13}$
The symmetry-induced magnetic anisotropy due to monoatomic steps at strained Ni films is determined using results of first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) calculations and an analogy with the Néel model. We show that there is a magnetoelastic anisotropy contribution to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy in the vicinal plane of a stepped surface. In addition to the known spin-direction reorientation transition at a flat Ni/Cu(001) surface, we propose a spin-direction reorientation transition in the vicinal plane for a stepped Ni/Cu surface d…
Microscopic spin interactions on a deformed Kagomé lattice of volborthite are investigated through magnetoelastic couplings. A negative longitudinal magnetostriction $ΔL<0$ in the $b$ axis is observed, which depends on the magnetization $M$ with a peculiar relation of $ΔL/L \propto M^{1.3}$. Based on the exchange striction model, it is argued that the negative magnetostriction originates from a pantograph-like lattice change of the Cu-O-Cu chain in the $b$ axis, and that the peculiar dependence arises from the local spin correlation. This idea is supported by DFT+$U$ calculations simulating th…
First-order magnetic transitions are of both fundamental and technological interest given that a number of emergent phases and functionalities are thereby created. Of particular interest are giant magnetocaloric effects, which are attributed to first-order magnetic transitions and have attracted broad attention for solid-state refrigeration applications. While the conventional wisdom is that atomic lattices play an important role in first-order magnetic transitions, a coherent microscopic description of the lattice and spin degrees of freedom is still lacking. Here, we study the magnetic phase…
Clear anomalies in the lattice thermal expansion (deviation from linear variation) and elastic properties (softening of the sound velocity) at the antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition are observed in the prototypical multiferroic BiFeO3 using a combination of picosecond acoustic pump-probe and high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments. Similar anomalies are also evidenced using first-principles calculations supporting our experimental findings. Those calculations in addition to a simple Landau-like model we also developed allow to understand the elastic softening and lattice chang…
For disordered Heisenberg systems with small single ion anisotropy, two spin glass transitions below the long range ordered phase transition temperature has been predicted theoretically for compositions close to the percolation threshold. Experimental verification of these predictions is still controversial for conventional spin glasses. We show that multiferroic spin glass systems can provide a unique platform for verifying these theoretical predictions via a study of change in magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric couplings, obtained from an analysis of diffraction data, at the spin glass trans…

We present a comprehensive first principles electronic structure study of the magnetoelastic and magnetostrictive properties in the Co-based Co$_2$XAl (X = V, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe) full Heusler compounds. In addition to the commonly used total energy approach, we employ torque method to calculate the magnetoelastic tensor elements. We show that the torque based methods are in general computationally more efficient, and allow to unveil the atomic- and orbital-contributions to the magnetoelastic constants in an exact manner, as opposed to the conventional approaches based on second order perturbation …
The physical properties of the spinel LiGaCr4S8 have been studied with neutron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data reveal negative thermal expansion (NTE) below 111(4) K. The magnetic susceptibility deviates from Curie-Weiss behavior with the onset of NTE. At low temperature a broad peak in the magnetic susceptibility at 10.3(3) K is accompanied by the return of normal thermal expansion. First principles calculations find a strong coupling between the lattice and the simulated mag…
We performed first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations for strained tetragonal ferromagnetic La(Ba)MnO$_3$ with an assumed experimental structure of thin strained tetragonal La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) films grown on SrTiO$_3$[001] and LaAlO$_3$[001] substrates. The calculated uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) values, are in good quantitative agreement with experiment for LCMO films on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. We also analyze the applicability of linear magnetoelastic theory for describing the stain dependence of MAE, and estimate …
We report first principles calculations of the structural parameters and phonon dispersion of the tetragonal non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound CeAuAl$_3$. Taking into account weak magnetoelastic interactions of the rare-earth (RE) ions with the spectrum of phonons, we obtain an analytical expression for the hybridization of quadrupole excitations and phonons from the poles of the one-phonon Green-function. In the paramagnetic phase, we predict the formation of mixed modes that may be observed by inelastic neutron scattering. Our results show that magnetoelastic interactions, albeit be…
Ferromagnetic \nmg has unique magnetoelastic properties. These are investigated by detailed computational studies of the phonon dispersion curves for the non-modulated cubic \Ltw and tetragonal structures. For the \Ltw\ structure, a complete softening of the transverse acoustic mode has been found around the wave vector $\mathbf{q}=[1/3,1/3,0](2 π/a)$. The softening of this \TA{2} phonon mode leads to the premartensitic modulated super-structure observed experimentally. Further phonon anomalies, related to other structural transformations in \nmg, have also been found and examined. These anoma…
High perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), a property needed for nanoscale spintronic applications, is rare in oxide conductors. We report the observation of a PMA up to 0.23 MJ/m3 in modestly strained epitaxial NiCo2O4 (NCO) films which are room-temperature ferrimagnetic conductors. Spin-lattice coupling manifested as magnetoelastic effect was found as the origin of the PMA. The in-plane xx-yy states of Co on tetrahedral sites play crucial role in the magnetic anisotropy and spin-lattice coupling with an energy scale of 1 meV/f.u. The elucidation of the microscopic origin paves a way for e…
The optimal amount of dysprosium in the highly magnetostrictive rare-earth compounds Tb$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Fe$_2$ for room temperature applications has long been known to be $x$=0.73 (Terfenol-D). Here, we derive this value from first principles by calculating the easy magnetization direction and magnetostriction as a function of composition and temperature. We use crystal field coefficients obtained within density-functional theory to construct phenomenological anisotropy and magnetoelastic constants. The temperature dependence of these constants is obtained from disordered local moment calculation…
The dynamic structures of the cubic and tetragonal phase in BaTiO3 and its dielectric response above the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature (Tp) are studied by first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It's shown that the phase transition is due to the condensation of one of the transverse correlations. Calculation of the phonon properties for both the cubic and tetragonal phase shows a saturation of the soft mode frequency near 60 cm-1 near Tp and advocates its order-disorder nature. Our first-principles calculation leads directly to a two modes feature of the dielect…
The exchange-driven contribution to the magnetoelectric susceptibility $\hatα$ is formulated using a microscopic model Hamiltonian coupling the spin degrees of freedom to lattice displacements and electric field, which may be constructed from first-principles data. Electronic and ionic contributions are sorted out, and the latter is resolved into a sum of contributions from different normal modes. If intrasublattice spin correlations can be neglected, the longitudinal component $α_\parallel$ becomes proportional to the product of magnetic susceptibility and sublattice magnetization in accordan…
Perpendicular magnetization is essential for high-density memory application using magnetic materials. High-spin polarization of conduction electrons is also required for realizing large electric signals from spin-dependent transport phenomena. Heusler alloy is a well-known material class showing the half-metallic electronic structure. However, its cubic lattice nature favors in-plane magnetization and thus minimizes the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), in general. This study focuses on an inverse-type Heusler alloy, Mn$_{2-δ}$CoGa$_{1+δ}$ (MCG) with a small off-stoichiometry ($δ$) , w…
We formulate a new scheme to study the combined magnetization and lattice dynamics in magnets, so-called magnetoelastics. The coupling between magnetization and lattice are considered through an expansion of electron-phonon coupling, while the magnetization is coupled to electrons through sd-like interaction. We show the that the time-scale of the magnetization dynamics due to coupling between magnetic degrees of freedom and electronic degrees of freedom can be transferred to lattice degrees of freedom and therefore can give rise to lattice dynamics on the same time-scale. This opens a new rou…
We examine the refractive index from the viewpoint of modern first-principles materials physics. We first argue that the standard formula, $n^2 = \varepsilon_{\mathrm r} μ_{\mathrm r}$, is generally in conflict with fundamental principles on the microscopic level. Instead, it turns out that an allegedly approximate relation, $n^2 = \varepsilon_{\mathrm r}$, which is already being used for most practical purposes, can be justified theoretically at optical wavelengths. More generally, starting from the fundamental, Lorentz-covariant electromagnetic wave equation in materials as used in plasma ph…
We demonstrate how the quantum paraelectric ground state of SrTiO$_3$ can be accessed via a microscopic $ab~initio$ approach based on density functional theory. At low temperature the quantum fluctuations are strong enough to stabilize the paraelectric phase even though a classical description would predict a ferroelectric phase. We find that accounting for quantum fluctuations of the lattice and for the strong coupling between the ferroelectric soft mode and lattice elongation is necessary to achieve quantitative agreement with experimental frequency of the ferroelectric soft mode. The temper…
Understanding of the complex behavior of particles at surfaces requires detailed knowledge of both macroscopic and microscopic processes that take place; also certain processes depend critically on temperature and gas pressure. To link these processes we combine state-of-the-art microscopic, and macroscopic phenomenological, theories. We apply our theory to the O/Ru(0001) system and calculate thermal desorption spectra, heat of adsorption, and the surface phase diagram. The agreement with experiment provides validity for our approach which thus identifies the way for a predictive simulation of…
First-principles calculations combining density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory can provide microscopic insight into the dynamics of electrons and phonons in materials. We review this theoretical and computational framework, focusing on perturbative treatments of scattering, dynamics and transport of coupled electrons and phonons. We discuss application of these first-principles calculations to electronics, lighting, spectroscopy and renewable energy.
The harmonic Kanzaki-Krivoglaz-Khachaturyan model of strain-induced interaction is generalized to concentrated size-mismatched alloys and adapted to first-principles calculations. The configuration dependence of both Kanzaki forces and force constants is represented by real-space cluster expansions that can be constructed based on the calculated forces. The model is implemented for the fcc lattice and applied to Cu$_{1-x}$Au$_x$ and Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$ alloys for concentrations $x=0.25$, 0.5, and 0.75. The asymmetry between the $3d$ and $5d$ elements leads to large quadratic terms in the occupati…
The MnAs compound shows a first-order transition at T$_C\approx42$ C, and a second-order transition at T$_t\approx120$ C. The first-order transition, with structural (hexagonal-orthorhombic), magnetic (FM-PM) and electrical conductivity changes, is associated to magnetocaloric, magnetoelastic, and magnetoresistance effects. We report a study in a large temperature range from $-196$ up to $140$ C, using the $γ-γ$ perturbed angular correlations method with the radioactive probe $^{77}$Br$\rightarrow^{77}$Se, produced at the ISOLDE-CERN facility. The electric field gradients and magnetic hyperfin…
We propose a microscopic, first-principles description of the ionic conduction in crystals. This formalism allows us to gain new insights into the ideal characteristics of general ionic conducting materials and, in particular, solid electrolytes. Using \textit{ab initio} calculations, we show that our formalism results in ionic mobilities consistent with experiments for several materials. Our work opens the possibility of developing solid electrolytes based on fundamental physical principles rather than empirical descriptions of the underlying processes.
The aim of this Chapter is to provide an account of recent advances in the first-principles modeling of ferroelectric oxide nanostructures. Starting from a microscopic description of ferroelectricity in bulk materials and considering then, successively, different kinds of nanostructures (films, multilayers, wires, and particles), we try to identify the main trends and to provide a coherent picture of the role of finite size effects in ferroelectric oxides.
The microscopic physics behind low lattice thermal conductivity of single crystal rocksalt lead telluride (PbTe) is investigated. Mode-dependent phonon (normal and umklapp) scattering rates and their impact on thermal conductivity were quantified by the first-principles-based anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations that accurately reproduce thermal conductivity in a wide temperature range. The low thermal conductivity of PbTe is attributed to the scattering of longitudinal acoustic phonons by transverse optical phonons with large anharmonicity, and small group velocity of the soft transverse …
We report first-principles static and dynamic calculations that clarify the microscopic mechanism of carbon annihilation due to phosphorous treatment upon oxidation of silicon carbide (SiC). We identify the most stable form of the phosphorus (P) in the oxide as the four-fold coordinated with the dangling PO unit and find that the unit attracts carbon ejected from the interface, thus operating as a carbon absorber. This finding provides a microscopic reasoning for the first time for the promotion of the oxidation reaction on one hand and the annihilation of the C-related defects at the interfac…

We argue that the amazing progress of first-principles materials physics necessitates a revision of the Standard Approach to electrodynamics of media. We hence subject this Standard Approach to a thorough critique, which shows both its inherent conceptual problems and its practical inapplicability to modern ab initio calculations. We then go on to show that the common practice in ab initio materials physics has overcome these difficulties by taking a different, microscopic approach to electrodynamics of media, only superficially resembling the Standard Approach whose validity is restricted to …
The puzzling observation of room temperature ferromagnetism in double perovskites (A$_2$BB$'$O$_6$), despite having the magnetic lattice of B-ions diluted by non-magnetic B$'$-ions, have been examined for Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$. {\it Ab-initio} spin spiral electronic structure calculations along various high symmetry directions in reciprocal space are used to determine the exchange interactions entering an extended Heisenberg model, which is then solved classically using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the ferromagnetic transition temperature T$_c$. We find that one must consider onsite Coulomb …
Atomic-scale control of spins by electric fields is highly desirable for future technological applications. Magnetically-doped Aurivillius-phase oxides present one route to achieve this, with magnetic ions substituted into the ferroelectric structure at dilute concentrations, resulting in spin-charge coupling. However, there has been minimal exploration of the ferroelectric switching pathways in this materials class, limiting predictions of the influence of an electric field on the magnetic spins in the structure. Here, we determine the ferroelectric switching pathways of the end member of the…
Van der Waals magnet VI$_3$ demonstrates intriguing magnetic properties that render it great for use in various applications. However, its microscopic magnetic structure has not been determined yet. Here, we report neutron diffraction and susceptibility measurements in VI$_3$ that revealed a ferromagnetic order with the moment direction tilted from the $c$-axis by ~36° at 4 K. A spin reorientation accompanied by a structure distortion within the honeycomb plane is observed at a temperature of ~27 K, before the magnetic order completely disappears at $T_C$ = 50 K. The refined magnetic moment of…
We present an {\it ab initio}-based theoretical framework which elucidates the origin of the spin-orbit torque (SOT) in Normal-Metal(NM)/Ferromagnet(FM) heterostructures. The SOT is decomposed into two contributions, namely, {\it spin-Hall} and the {\it spin-orbital} components. We find that {\it (i)} the Field-Like (FL) SOT is dominated by the spin-orbital component and {\it (ii)} both components contribute to the damping-like torque with comparable magnitude in the limit of thick Pt film. The contribution of the spin-orbital component to the DL-SOT is present only for NMs with strong SOC cou…
We have developed a computational method to describe the nonlinear light propagation of an intense and ultrashort pulse at oblique incidence on a flat surface. In the method, coupled equations of macroscopic light propagation and microscopic electron dynamics are simultaneously solved using a multiscale modeling. The microscopic electronic motion is described by first-principles time-dependent density functional theory. The macroscopic Maxwell equations that describe oblique light propagation are transformed into one-dimensional wave equations. As an illustration of the method, light propagati…

Microscopic mechanism of structural and volume relaxation below glass transition temperature in a soda-lime silicate glass revealed by Raman spectroscopy and its first principle calculations
We investigate the phase diagrams of RMn$_2$O$_5$ via a first-principles effective-Hamiltonian method. We are able to reproduce the most important features of the complicated magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The calculated polarization as a function of temperature agrees very well with experiments. The dielectric-constant step at the commensurate-to -incommensurate magnetic phase transition is well reproduced. The microscopic mechanisms for the phase transitions are discussed.
We present the first in a series of microscopic studies of electrical transport through individual molecules with metallic contacts. We view the molecules as ``heterostructures'' composed of chemically well-defined atomic groups, and analyze the device characteristics in terms of the charge and potential response of these atomic-groups to the perturbation induced by the metal-molecule coupling and the applied electrical field, which are modeled using a first-principles based self-consistent matrix Green's function (SCMGF) method. As the first example, we examine the devices formed by attaching…
