We formulate a new scheme to study the combined magnetization and lattice dynamics in magnets, so-called magnetoelastics. The coupling between magnetization and lattice are considered through an expansion of electron-phonon coupling, while the magnetization is coupled to electrons through sd-like interaction. We show the that the time-scale of the magnetization dynamics due to coupling between magnetic degrees of freedom and electronic degrees of freedom can be transferred to lattice degrees of freedom and therefore can give rise to lattice dynamics on the same time-scale. This opens a new route to understand and treat ultrafast lattice dynamics induced by magnetization dynamics. We also show that all the parameters necessary to simulate this coupled lattice and magnetization dynamics can be obtained from first-principles.
We analyze the spontaneous magnetization reversal of supported monoatomic chains of finite length due to thermal fluctuations via atomistic spin-dynamics simulations. Our approach is based on the integration of the Landau-Lifshitz equation of motion of a classical spin Hamiltonian at the presence of stochastic forces. The associated magnetization lifetime is found to obey an Arrhenius law with an activation barrier equal to the domain wall energy in the chain. For chains longer than one domain-wall width, the reversal is initiated by nucleation of a reversed magnetization domain primarily at t…

Nanopatterned FePt nano-dots often exhibit low coercivity and a broad switching field distribution, which could arise due to edge damage during the patterning process causing a reduction in the $L1_{0}$ ordering required for a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Using an atomistic spin model, we study the magnetization reversal behavior of $L1_{0}$ FePt nanodots with soft magnetic edges. We show that reversal is initiated by nucleation for the whole range of edge widths studied. For narrow soft edges the individual nucleation events dominate reversal; for wider edges, multiple nucleation at th…
The magnetization of body-centered cubic iron at low temperatures is calculated with the steepest-entropy-ascent quantum thermodynamics (SEAQT) framework. This framework assumes that a thermodynamic property in an isolated system traces the path through state space with the greatest entropy production. Magnetization is calculated from the expected value of a thermodynamic ensemble of quantized spin waves based on the Heisenberg spin model applied to an ensemble of coupled harmonic oscillators. A realistic energy landscape is obtained from a magnon dispersion relation calculated using spin-dens…
Temperature-dependent magnetic properties of Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B permanent magnets, i.e., saturation magnetization $M_\text{s}(T)$, effective magnetic anisotropy constants $K_i^\text{eff}(T)$ ($i=1,2,3$), domain wall width $δ_w(T)$, and exchange stiffness constant $A_\text{e}(T)$, are calculated by using \textit{ab-initio} informed atomistic spin model simulations. We construct the atomistic spin model Hamiltonian for Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B by using the Heisenberg exchange of Fe$-$Fe and Fe$-$Nd atomic pairs, the uniaxial single-ion anisotropy of Fe atoms, and the crystal-field energy of Nd ions which …
Ultrafast magnetization dynamics probes the most fundamental properties of magnetic materials, exploring questions about the fundamental interactions responsible for magnetic phenomena. Thermal effects are known to be extremely important for laser-induced dynamics in metallic systems, but the dynamics of topological magnetic structures are little understood. Here we apply a massively parallel atomistic spin dynamics simulation to study the response of a permalloy vortex to a 50 fs laser pulse. We find that macroscopically the short timescale dynamics are indistinguishable from the bulk, but th…
A series of III-V ternary and quarternary digital alloy avalanche photodiodes (APDs) have recently been seen to exhibit very low excess noise. Using band inversion of an environment-dependent atomistic tight binding description of short period superlattices, we argue that a combination of increased effective mass, minigaps and band split-off are primarily responsible for the observed superior performance. These properties significantly limit the ionization rate of one carrier type, either holes or electrons, making the avalanche multiplication process unipolar in nature. The unipolar behavior …
A coupled atomistic spin and lattice dynamics approach is developed which merges the dynamics of these two degrees of freedom into a single set of coupled equations of motion. The underlying microscopic model comprises local exchange interactions between the electron spin and magnetic moment and the local couplings between the electronic charge and lattice displacements. An effective action for the spin and lattice variables is constructed in which the interactions among the spin and lattice components are determined by the underlying electronic structure. In this way, expressions are obtained…
We have developed a shell model potential to describe PbTiO3 and PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) by fitting to first-principles results. At zero pressure, the model reproduces the temperature behavior of PbTiO3, but with a smaller transition temperature than experimentally observed. We then fit a shell model potential for the complex PMN based on the transferability of the interatomic potentials. We find that even for ordered PMN, quenching the structure gives a non-polar state, but with local polarization (off-center ions) indicative of relaxor behavior.
Present knowledge of the function of materials is largely based on studies (experimental and theoretical) that are performed at low temperatures and ultra-low pressures. However, the majority of everyday applications, like e.g. catalysis, operate at atmospheric pressures and temperatures at or higher than 300 K. Here we employ ab initio, atomistic thermodynamics to construct a phase diagram of surface structures in the (T,p)-space from ultra-high vacuum to technically-relevant pressures and temperatures. We emphasize the value of such phase diagrams as well as the importance of the reaction ki…
We present a first-principles atomistic thermodynamics framework to describe the structure, composition and segregation profile of an alloy surface in contact with a (reactive) environment. The method is illustrated with the application to a Ag3Pd(111) surface in an oxygen atmosphere, and we analyze trends in segregation, adsorption and surface free energies. We observe a wide range of oxygen adsorption energies on the various alloy surface configurations, including binding that is stronger than on a Pd(111) surface and weaker than that on a Ag(111) surface. This and the consideration of even …
Using an atomistic first principles approach, we investigate the band offset of the GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs heterojunctions for the entire range of the Al doping concentration 0<x<=1. We apply the coherent potential approach to handle the configuration average of Al doping and a recently proposed semi-local exchange potential to accurately determine the band gaps of the materials. The calculated band structures of the GaAs, AlAs crystals and band gaps of the GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs alloys, are in very good agreement with the experimental results. We predict that valence band offset of the GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs hete…
We bridge an essential knowledge gap on the understanding of all-optical ultrafast switching in ferrimagnets; namely, the connection between atomistic spin dynamics methods and macroscopic phenomenological models. All-optical switching of the magnetization occurs after the application of a single femtosecond laser pulse to specific ferrimagnetic compounds. This strong excitation puts the involved degrees of freedom, electrons, lattice and spins out-of-equilibrium between each other. Atomistic spin models have quantitatively described all-optical switching in a wide range of experimental condit…
We present a computational study for the equilibrium shape of gold nanoparticles. By linking extensive quantum-mechanical calculations, based on Density-Functional Theory (DFT) to Wulff construction, we predict equilibrium shapes that are in good agreement with experimental observa- tions. We discuss the effect of the interactions between a nanoparticle and the encapsulating material on the equilibrium shape. As an example, we calculate adsorption of CO on several different Au(hkl) and use the results to explain the experimentally observed shape change of Au nanoparticles.
For analyzing quantum transport in semiconductor devices, accurate electronic structures are critical for quantitative predictions. Here we report theoretical analysis of electronic structures of all III-V zinc-blende semiconductor compounds. Our calculations are from density functional theory with the semi-local exchange proposed recently [F. Tran and P. Blaha, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 226401 (2009)], within the linear muffin tin orbital scheme. The calculated band gaps and effective masses are compared to experimental data and good quantitative agreement is obtained. Using the theoretical schem…
Radiative cooling has recently revived due to its significant potential as an environmentally friendly cooling technology. However, the design of particle-matrix cooling nanocomposites was generally carried out via tedious trial-and-error approaches, and the atomistic physics for efficient radiative cooling was not well understood. In this work, we identify the atomistic metrics of Barium Sulfate (BaSO$_4$) nanocomposite, which is an ultra-efficient radiative cooling material, using a predictive first-principles approach coupled with Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that BaSO$_4$-acry…
We present a computationally efficient general first-principles based method for spin-lattice simulations for solids. Our method is based on a combination of atomistic spin dynamics and molecular dynamics, expressed through a spin-lattice Hamiltonian where the bilinear magnetic term is expanded to second order in displacement, and all parameters are computed using density functional theory. The effect of first-order spin-lattice coupling on the magnon and phonon dispersion in bcc Fe is reported as an example, and is seen to be in good agreement with previous simulations performed with an empir…
The paper reports on a theoretical description of work function of TiN, which is one of the most used materials for the realization of electrodes and gates in CMOS devices. Indeed, although the work function is a fundamental quantity in quantum mechanics and also in device physics, as it allows the understanding of band alignment at heterostructures and gap states formation at the metal/semiconductor interface, the role of defects and contaminants is rarely taken into account. Here, by using first principles simulations, we present an extensive study of the work function dependence on nitrogen…
In this work the magnetization dynamics of clusters supported on non-magnetic substrates is shown to exhibit an unprecedented complex response when subjected to external magnetic fields. The field-driven magnetization reversal of small Co clusters deposited on a Cu(111) surface has been studied by means of first-principles calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. For applied fields ranging from 1 Tesla to 10 Tesla, we observe a coherent magnetization reversal with switching times in the range of several tenths of picoseconds to several nanoseconds, depending on the field strength.…

We present a multi-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) approach that efficiently describes the atomistic dynamics of morphological transitions between commensurate structures at crystal surfaces. As an example we study the reduction of a $(\sqrt{5}\times \sqrt{5})R27^{\circ}$ PdO(101) overlayer on Pd(100) in a CO atmosphere. Extensive density-functional theory calculations are used to establish an atomistic pathway for the oxide reduction process. First-principles multi-lattice kMC simulations on the basis of this pathway fully reproduce the experimental temperature dependence of the reduction r…
Using density-functional theory we assess the stability of bulk and surface oxides of the late 4d transition metals in a ``constrained equilibrium'' with a gas phase formed of O2 and CO. While the stability range of the most stable bulk oxide extends for ruthenium well into gas phase conditions representative of technological CO oxidation catalysis, this is progressively less so for the 4d metals to its right in the periodic system. Surface oxides could nevertheless still be stable under such conditions. These thermodynamic considerations are discussed in the light of recent experiments, empha…
By using a multiscale approach based on first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we investigate the electronic structure and magnetization dynamics of an inverse Heusler and a Heusler compound and their alloys, i. e. Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$CoAl and Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$VAl, where $Z$ = Mo, W, Os and Ru, respectively. A signature of the ferrimagnetic ordering of Mn$_{2}$CoAl and Mn$_{2}$VAl Heusler alloys is reflected in the calculated Heisenberg exchange constants. They decay very rapidly with the interatomic distance and have short range, which is a consequence of the e…
We have performed molecular dynamics simulations using a shell model potential developed by fitting first principles results to describe the behavior of the relaxor-ferroelectric (1-x)PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) as function of concentration and temperature, using site occupancies within the random site model. In our simulations, PMN is cubic at all temperatures and behaves as a polar glass. As a small amount of Ti is added, a weak polar state develops, but structural disorder dominates, and the symmetry is rhombohedral. As more Ti is added the ground state is clearly polar and the system …
We observe using ab initio methods that localized surface plasmon resonances in icosahedral silver nanoparticles enter the asymptotic region already between diameters of 1 and 2 nm, converging close to the classical quasistatic limit around 3.4 eV. We base the observation on time-dependent density-functional theory simulations of the icosahedral silver clusters Ag$_{55}$ (1.06 nm), Ag$_{147}$ (1.60 nm), Ag$_{309}$ (2.14 nm), and Ag$_{561}$ (2.68 nm). The simulation method combines the adiabatic GLLB-SC exchange-correlation functional with real time propagation in an atomic orbital basis set us…
Phonon transmission across interfaces of dissimilar materials has been studied intensively in the recent years by using atomistic simulation tools owing to its importance in determining the effective thermal conductivity of nanostructured materials. Atomistic Green's function (AGF) method with interatomic force constants from the first-principles (FP) calculations has evolved to be a promising approach to study phonon transmission in many not well-studied material systems. However, the direct FP calculation for interatomic force constants becomes infeasible when the system involves atomic diso…
A hierarchical multiscale approach to model the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic ran- dom alloys is presented. First-principles calculations of the Heisenberg exchange integrals are linked to atomistic spin models based upon the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation to calculate temperature-dependent parameters (e.g., effective exchange interactions, damping param- eters). These parameters are subsequently used in the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) model for multi-sublattice magnets to calculate numerically and analytically the ultrafast demagnetization times. The developed mul…
This paper reviews the status of molecular dynamics as a method in describing solid-solid phase transitions, and its relationship to continuum approaches. Simulation work done in NiTi and Zr using first principles and semi-empirical potentials is presented. This shows failures of extending equilibrium thermodynamics to the nanoscale, and the crucial importance of system-specific details to the dynamics of martensite formation. The inconsistency between experimental and theoretical crystal structures in NiTi is described, together with its possible resolution in terms of nanoscale effects.
Localized basis ab initio molecular dynamics simulation within the density functional framework has been used to generate realistic configurations of amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC). Our approach consists of constructing a set of smart initial configurations that conform essential geometrical and structural aspects of the materials obtained from experimental data, which is subsequently driven via first-principles force-field to obtain the best solution in a reduced solution space. A combination of a priori information (primarily structural and topological) along with the ab-initio optimizati…
We present experimental magnetotunneling results and atomistic pseudopotential calculations of quasiparticle electron and hole wave functions of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots. The combination of a predictive theory along with the experimental results allows us to gain direct insight into the quantum states. We monitor the effects of (i) correlations, (ii) atomistic symmetry and (iii) piezoelectricity on the confined carriers and (iv) observe a peculiar charging sequence of holes that violates the Aufbau principle.
We develop the hydrodynamical theory of collinear spin currents coupled to magnetization dynamics in metallic ferromagnets. The collective spin density couples to the spin current through a U(1) Berry-phase gauge field determined by the local texture and dynamics of the magnetization. We determine phenomenologically the dissipative corrections to the equation of motion for the electronic current, which consist of a dissipative spin-motive force generated by magnetization dynamics and a magnetic texture-dependent resistivity tensor. The reciprocal dissipative, adiabatic spin torque on the magne…
We investigate the magnetic properties of a range of low-dimensional ferromagnets using a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. This approach allows us to evaluate the ground state and finite temperature properties of experimentally well characterized systems such as Co/Cu(111), Co/Cu(001), Fe/Cu(001) and Fe/W(110), for different thicknesses of the magnetic layer. We compare our calculated spin wave spectra with experimental data available in the literature, and find a good quantitative agreement. We also predict magnon spectra for systems for wh…
The calculation of free energies from first principles in materials is a formidable task which enables the prediction of phase stability with high accuracy; these calculations are complicated in magnetic materials by the interplay of electronic, magnetic, and vibrational degrees of freedom. In this work, we show the feasibility and accuracy of the calculation of phase stability in magnetic systems with ab initio methods and thermodynamic integration by sampling the magnetic and vibrational phase space with coupled atomistic spin dynamics-ab initio molecular dynamics (ASD-AIMD) simulations [Sto…

We present a method for performing atomistic spin dynamic simulations. A comprehensive summary of all pertinent details for performing the simulations such as equations of motions, models for including temperature, methods of extracting data and numerical schemes for performing the simulations is given. The method can be applied in a first principles mode, where all interatomic exchange is calculated self-consistently, or it can be applied with frozen parameters estimated from experiments or calculated for a fixed spin-configuration. The effect of the electron-phonon interaction on magnetization relaxation is studied within the framework of first-principles scattering theory for Fe, Co, and Ni by displacing atoms in the scattering region randomly with a thermal distribution. This "frozen thermal lattice disorder" approach reproduces the non-monotonic damping behaviour observed in ferromagnetic resonance measurements and yields reasonable quantitative agreement between calculated and experimental values. It can be readily applied to alloys and easily extended by determining the atomic displacements from ab initio phonon spe…
While the ground state of magnetic materials is in general well described on the basis of spin density functional theory (SDFT), the theoretical description of finite-temperature and non-equilibrium properties require an extension beyond the standard SDFT. Time-dependent SDFT (TD-SDFT), which give for example access to dynamical properties are computationally very demanding and can currently be hardly applied to complex solids. Here we focus on the alternative approach based on the combination of a parameterized phenomenological spin Hamiltonian and SDFT-based electronic structure calculations…
It is well established that it is possible to switch certain antiferromagnets electrically, yet the interplay of Néel-spin-orbit torques and thermal activation is only poorly understood. Combining ab initio calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations we develop a multiscale model to study the current induced switching in Mn2Au. We compute from first principles the strength and direction of the electrically induced magnetic moments, caused by the Rashba--Edelstein effect, and take these into account in atomistic spin dynamics simulations. Our simulations reveal the switching paths as w…
We study the Fe/W(110) monolayer system through a combination of first principles calculations and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. We focus on the dispersion of the spin waves parallel to the [001] direction. Our results compare favorably with the experimental data of Prokop et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 177206], and correctly capture a drastic softening of the magnon spectrum, with respect to bulk bcc Fe. The suggested shortcoming of the itinerant electron model, in particular that given by density functional theory, is refuted. We also demonstrate that finite temperature effects are sig…

The full realization of spin qubits for quantum technologies relies on the ability to control and design the formation processes of spin defects in semiconductors and insulators. We present a computational protocol to investigate the synthesis of point-defects at the atomistic level, and we apply it to the study of a promising spin-qubit in silicon carbide, the divacancy (VV). Our strategy combines electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory and enhanced sampling techniques coupled with first principles molecular dynamics. We predict the optimal annealing temperatures …
We propose a data-assimilation method for evaluating the finite-temperature magnetization of a permanent magnet over a high-dimensional composition space. Based on a general framework for constructing a predictor from two data sets including missing values, a practical scheme for magnetic materials is formulated in which a small number of experimental data in limited composition space are integrated with a larger number of first-principles calculation data. We apply the scheme to (Nd$_{1-α-β-γ}$Pr$_α$La$_β$Ce$_γ$)$_{2}$(Fe$_{1-δ-ζ}$Co$_δ$Ni$_ζ$)$_{14}$B. The magnetization in the whole $(α, β, …
One endeavour of modern physical chemistry is to use bottom-up approaches to design materials and drugs with desired properties. Here we introduce an atomistic structure learning algorithm (ASLA) that utilizes a convolutional neural network to build 2D compounds and layered structures atom by atom. The algorithm takes no prior data or knowledge on atomic interactions but inquires a first-principles quantum mechanical program for physical properties. Using reinforcement learning, the algorithm accumulates knowledge of chemical compound space for a given number and type of atoms and stores this …
Evidence of coexistence of Co3+ with Co2+ in ceramic Co3TeO6 through XANES, DC magnetization and first principal studies is provided. XANES along with linear combination fit provide relative concentrations of Co2+ and Co3+.Temperature dependent DC magnetization exhibits the same antiferromagnetic behavior as observed in single crystal. The presence of both Co2+ and Co3+ suggests that if the later is in high spin state, the effective magnetic moment is similar to that observed in single crystal studies. In contrast, if Co3+ is in low spin state effective magnetic moment is similar to that obser…
