We propose a data-assimilation method for evaluating the finite-temperature magnetization of a permanent magnet over a high-dimensional composition space. Based on a general framework for constructing a predictor from two data sets including missing values, a practical scheme for magnetic materials is formulated in which a small number of experimental data in limited composition space are integrated with a larger number of first-principles calculation data. We apply the scheme to (Nd$_{1-α-β-γ}$Pr$_α$La$_β$Ce$_γ$)$_{2}$(Fe$_{1-δ-ζ}$Co$_δ$Ni$_ζ$)$_{14}$B. The magnetization in the whole $(α, β, γ, δ, ζ)$ space at arbitrary temperature is obtained. It is shown that the Co doping does not enhance the magnetization at low temperatures, whereas the magnetization increases with increasing $δ$ above 320 K.
The effect of the electron-phonon interaction on magnetization relaxation is studied within the framework of first-principles scattering theory for Fe, Co, and Ni by displacing atoms in the scattering region randomly with a thermal distribution. This "frozen thermal lattice disorder" approach reproduces the non-monotonic damping behaviour observed in ferromagnetic resonance measurements and yields reasonable quantitative agreement between calculated and experimental values. It can be readily applied to alloys and easily extended by determining the atomic displacements from ab initio phonon spe…
Evidence of coexistence of Co3+ with Co2+ in ceramic Co3TeO6 through XANES, DC magnetization and first principal studies is provided. XANES along with linear combination fit provide relative concentrations of Co2+ and Co3+.Temperature dependent DC magnetization exhibits the same antiferromagnetic behavior as observed in single crystal. The presence of both Co2+ and Co3+ suggests that if the later is in high spin state, the effective magnetic moment is similar to that observed in single crystal studies. In contrast, if Co3+ is in low spin state effective magnetic moment is similar to that obser…
We formulate a new scheme to study the combined magnetization and lattice dynamics in magnets, so-called magnetoelastics. The coupling between magnetization and lattice are considered through an expansion of electron-phonon coupling, while the magnetization is coupled to electrons through sd-like interaction. We show the that the time-scale of the magnetization dynamics due to coupling between magnetic degrees of freedom and electronic degrees of freedom can be transferred to lattice degrees of freedom and therefore can give rise to lattice dynamics on the same time-scale. This opens a new rou…
We present a first-principles study on the interface between perovskite ferroelectrics (PbTiO3) and conducting magnetic manganites La_{1-x}Sr_xMnO3. We show that by switching the ferroelectric polarization, additional carriers are accumulated or depleted at the interfacial region of the manganite and that this change in carrier density can modify the magnetic spin configuration of the interfacial Mn, which is consistent with the experimentally observed anomalously large change in the magnetization. We also describe an unexpected purely interfacial phenomenon whereby the ferroelectric polarizat…
We compute the orbital magnetization in real materials by evaluating a recently discovered formula for periodic systems, within density functional theory. We obtain improved values of the orbital magnetization in the ferromagnetic metals Fe, Co, and Ni, by taking into account the contribution of the interstitial regions neglected so far in literature. We also use the orbital magnetization to compute the EPR $g$-tensor in molecules and solids. The present approach reproduces the $g$-tensor obtained by linear response (LR), when the spin-orbit can be treated as a perturbation. However, it can al…
Employing first principles electronic structure calculations in conjunction with the frozen-magnon method we calculate exchange interactions, spin-wave dispersion, and spin-wave stiffness constants in inverse-Heusler-based spin gapless semiconductor (SGS) compounds Mn$_2$CoAl, Ti$_2$MnAl, Cr$_2$ZnSi, Ti$_2$CoSi and Ti$_2$VAs. We find that their magnetic behavior is similar to the half-metallic ferromagnetic full-Heusler alloys, i.e., the intersublattice exchange interactions play an essential role in the formation of the magnetic ground state and in determining the Curie temperature, $T_\mathr…
We present calculations and experimental measurements of the temperature-dependent magnetization of a single crystal of GdCo$_5$ in magnetic fields of order 60 T. At zero temperature the calculations, based on density-functional theory in the disordered-local-moment picture, predict a field-induced transition from an antiferromagnetic to a canted alignment of Gd and Co moments at 46.1 T. At higher temperatures the calculations find this critical field to increase along with the zero-field magnetization. The experimental measurements observe this transition to occur between 44-48 T at 1.4 K. Up…
First-principles techniques are used to investigate the behavior of BiFeO$_{3}$/LaFeO$_{3}$ perovskite oxide superlattices epitaxially grown on a (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrate. The calculations show that 1/1 superlattices exhibit a $Pmc2_1$ ground state combining a trilinear coupling of one polar and two oxygen rotational lattice modes, and weak ferromagnetism. The microscopic mechanism allowing one to manipulate the magnetization with an electric field in such systems is presented and its dependence on strain and chemical substitution is discussed. BiFeO$_{3}$/LaFeO$_{3}$ artificial superlattices…
The linear magnetoelectric response of Cr2O3 at zero temperature is calculated from first principles by tracking the change in magnetization under a macroscopic electric field. Both the spin and the orbital contributions to the induced magnetization are computed, and in each case the response is decomposed into lattice and electronic parts. We find that the transverse response is dominated by the spin-lattice and spin-electronic contributions, whose calculated values are consistent with static and optical magnetoelectric measurements. In the case of the longitudinal response, orbital contribut…
First-principles calculations are presented for the layered perovskite Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. The results reveal a rich set of coupled structural, magnetic and polar domains in which oxygen octahedron rotations induce ferroelectricity, magnetoelectricity and weak-ferromagnetism. The key point is that the rotation distortion is a combination of two non-polar modes with different symmetries. We use the term "hybrid" improper ferroelectricity to describe this phenomenon and discuss how control over magnetism is achieved through these functional antiferrodistortive octahedron rotations.
Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbitals method we determine ab-initio the lattice parameters of tetragonally distorted Co2TiSn in the L21 structure. The tetragonal lattice parameter c is determined as a function of the lattice parameter a by energy minimization. The change in total energy is found to be only a few $k_B T$ with respect to room temperature. The spin polarizations as well as the magnetizations are stable against small lattice distortions. It is shown, that the volume is not constant upon distortion and that the volume change is related with si…
The optimal amount of dysprosium in the highly magnetostrictive rare-earth compounds Tb$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Fe$_2$ for room temperature applications has long been known to be $x$=0.73 (Terfenol-D). Here, we derive this value from first principles by calculating the easy magnetization direction and magnetostriction as a function of composition and temperature. We use crystal field coefficients obtained within density-functional theory to construct phenomenological anisotropy and magnetoelastic constants. The temperature dependence of these constants is obtained from disordered local moment calculation…
Voltage-driven 180$^\circ$ magnetization switching without electric current provides the possibility for revolutionizing the spintronics. We demonstrated the voltage-driven charge-mediated 180$^\circ$ magnetization switching at room temperature by combining first-principles calculations and temperature-dependent magnetization dynamics simulation. The electric field ($E$) induced interface charge is found to allow a giant modulation of the magnetic anisotropy ($K$) of the nanomagnet. Particularly $K$ is revealed to vary linearly with respect to $E$ and the epitaxial strain. Magnetization dynami…
In the spirit of multi-scale modelling magnetization dynamics at elevated temperature is often simulated in terms of a spin model where the model parameters are derived from first principles. While these parameters are mostly assumed temperature-independent and thermal properties arise from spin fluctuations only, other scenarios are also possible. Choosing bcc Fe as an example, we investigate the influence of different kinds of model assumptions on ultra-fast spin dynamics, where following a femtosecond laser pulse a sample is demagnetized due to a sudden rise of the electron temperature. Whi…
We present a first-principles scheme that allows the orbital magnetization of a magnetic crystal to be evaluated accurately and efficiently even in the presence of complex Fermi surfaces. Starting from an initial electronic-structure calculation with a coarse ab initio k-point mesh, maximally localized Wannier functions are constructed and used to interpolate the necessary k-space quantities on a fine mesh, in parallel to a previously-developed formalism for the anomalous Hall conductivity [X.Wang, J. Yates, I. Souza, and D. Vanderbilt, Phys. Rev. B 74, 195118 (2006)]. We formulate our new app…
The microscopic structure of spin-orbit fields for the technologically important Fe/GaAs interface is uncovered from first principles. A symmetry based method allows to obtain the spin-orbit fields---both their magnitude and orientation---for a generic Bloch state, from the electronic band structure for any in-plane magnetization orientation. It is demonstrated that the spin-orbit fields depend not only on the electric field across the interface, but also surprisingly strongly on the Fe magnetization orientation, opening prospects for their magnetic control. These results give important clues …
We study IrCrMnZ (Z=Al, Ga, Si, Ge) systems using first-principles calculations from the perspective of their application as the electrode materials of MgO-based MTJs. These materials have highly spin-polarized conduction electrons with partially occupied $Δ_1$ band, which is important for coherent tunneling in parallel magnetization configuration. The Curie temperatures of IrCrMnAl and IrCrMnGa are very high (above 1300 K) as predicted from mean-field-approximation. The stability of ordered phase against various antisite disorders has been investigated. We discuss here the effect of "spin-orb…
The half-metallic half-Heusler alloy NiMnSb is a promising candidate for applications in spintronic devices due to its low magnetic damping and its rich anisotropies. Here we use ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements and calculations from first principles to investigate how the composition of the epitaxially grown NiMnSb influences the magnetodynamic properties of saturation magnetization $M_S$, Gilbert damping $α$, and exchange stiffness $A$. $M_S$ and $A$ are shown to have a maximum for stoichiometric composition, while the Gilbert damping is minimum. We find excellent quantitative agre…
We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-principle implementation of an almost ideal memristor - a two-terminal circuit element whose resistance is approximately proportional to the integral of the input signal over time. The demonstrated device is based on a thin-film ferromagnet/antiferromagnet bilayer, where magnetic frustration results in viscous magnetization dynamics enabling memristive functionality, while the external magnetic field plays the role of the driving input. The demonstrated memristor concept is amenable to downscaling and can be adapted for electronic driving, making it att…
Layered materials with robust magnetic ordering have been attracting significant research interest. In recent experiments, a new layered material 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ has been synthesized and exhibits ferromagnetism above the room temperature. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$, both in the bulk and in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. We show that 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ can be stable in the monolayer form, and has a low exfoliation energy. The monolayer structure is an intrinsic ferromagnetic metal, which mainta…
To elucidate the physics underling magnetism observed in nominally nonmagnetic materials with only $sp$-electrons, we built an extreme model to simulate H-adsorption (in a straight-line form) on graphene. Our first principles calculations for the model produce a ferromagnetic ground state with a magnetic moment of one Bohr magneton per H atom and an estimated Curie temperature above 250~K. The removal of the $p_z$-orbitals from sublattice B of graphene introduces $p_z$-vacancies. The $p_z$-vacancy-induced states are not created from changes in interatomic interactions but are created because o…
Single crystals of Fe5B2P were grown by self-flux growth technique. Structural and magnetic properties are studied. The Curie temperature of Fe5B2P is determined to be 655$pm$2K. The saturation magnetization is determined to be 1.72 MuB/Fe at 2K. The temperature variation of the anisotropy constant K1 is determined for the first time, reaching ~0.50 MJ/m3 at 2K, and it is comparable to that of hard ferrites. The saturation magnetization is found to be larger than the hard ferrites. The first principle calculations of saturation magnetization and anisotropy constant are found to be consistent w…
QE-CONVERSE: An open-source package for the Quantum ESPRESSO distribution to compute non-perturbatively orbital magnetization from first principles, including NMR chemical shifts and EPR parameters
We study magnetic properties of NdFe$_{11}$Ti$X$, where $X$=B, C, N, O, and F, by using the first-principles calculation based on the density functional theory. Its parent compound NdFe$_{11}$Ti has the ThMn$_{12}$ structure, which has the symmetry of space group $I4/mmm$, No. 139. The magnetization increases by doping B, C, N, O, and F at the $2b$ site of the ThMn$_{12}$ structure. The amount of the increase is larger for $X$=N, O, F than for $X$=B, C. On the other hand, the crystal field parameter $\langle r^{2} \rangle A_{0}^{2}$, which controls the axial magnetic anisotropy of the Nd $4f$ …
We study the exchange interactions in half-metallic Heusler alloys using first-principles calculations in conjunction with the frozen-magnon approximation. The Curie temperature is estimated within both mean-field (MF) and random-phase-approximation (RPA) approaches. For the half-Heusler alloys NiMnSb and CoMnSb the dominant interaction is between the nearest Mn atoms. In this case the MF and RPA estimations differ strongly. The RPA approach provides better agreement with experiment. The exchange interactions are more complex in the case of full-Heusler alloys Co$_2$MnSi and Co$_2$CrAl where t…
We present first-principles, density-functional theory calculations of the NMR chemical shifts for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, starting with benzene and increasing sizes up to the one- and two-dimensional infinite limits of graphene ribbons and sheets. Our calculations are performed using a combination of the recently developed theory of orbital magnetization in solids, and a novel approach to NMR calculations where chemical shifts are obtained from the derivative of the orbital magnetization with respect to a microscopic, localized magnetic dipole. Using these methods we study on equal …
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated experimentally and theoretically for ferromagnetic thin films of Mn$_5$Ge$_3$. We have separated the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the experimental anomalous Hall effect, and calculated the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from the Berry curvature of the Bloch states using first-principles methods. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization, which can be understood from the long wavelength fluctuations of the spin orientation at finite temperatures. The quantitative agreement between theory and exper…
We present calculations for electronic and magnetic properties of surface states confined by a circular quantum corral built of magnetic adatoms (Fe) on a Cu(111) surface. We show the oscillations of charge and magnetization densities within the corral and the possibility of the appearance of spin--polarized states. In order to classify the peaks in the calculated density of states with orbital quantum numbers we analyzed the problem in terms of a simple quantum mechanical circular well model. This model is also used to estimate the behaviour of the magnetization and energy with respect to the…
Surface magnetic properties of the pseudomorphic Fe(110) monolayer on a W(110) substrate are investigated from first principles as a function of the substrate thickness (up to eight layers). Analyzing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies, we find stable (with respect to the number of substrate layers) in-plane easy and hard axes of magnetization along the [1[overline 1]0] and [001] directions, respectively, reaching a value in good agreement with experiment for thick substrates. Additionally, the changes to the magnetic spin moments and the density of the Fe d states are analyzed with re…
The Landau-Lifshitz equation reliably describes magnetization dynamics using a phenomenological treatment of damping. This paper presents first-principles calculations of the damping parameters for Fe, Co, and Ni that quantitatively agree with existing ferromagnetic resonance measurements. This agreement establishes the dominant damping mechanism for these systems and takes a significant step toward predicting and tailoring the damping constants of new materials.
Despite oxides and some fluorides perovskites have emerged as prototypes of multiferroic and magnetoelectric materials, they have not impacted real devices. Unfortunately, their working temperatures are very low and the magnetoelectric coupling has been reported to be rather small. Herewith, we report from first-principles calculations an ideal magnetization reversal through polarization switching in BaCuF$_4$ which, according to our results, could be achieved close to room temperature. We also show that this ideal coupling is driven by a soft mode that combines both, polarization and octahedr…
Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), composed of two ferromagnetic electrodes separated by a thin insulating barrier layer, are currently used in spintronic devices, such as magnetic sensors and magnetic random access memories. Recently, driven by demonstrations of ferroelectricity at the nanoscale, thin-film ferroelectric barriers were proposed to extend the functionality of MTJs. Due to the sensitivity of conductance to the magnetization alignment of the electrodes (tunnelling magnetoresistance) and the polarization orientation in the ferroelectric barrier (tunnelling electroresistance), these …
Using first principles calculations within DFT based on the full potential APW+lo method, we calculated the electronic and magnetic structures for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states of La2MnNiO6 and analyzed the site projected density of states and electronic band structures. Our calculations show that the ground state of La2MnNiO6 is ferromagnetic insulating with the magnetization in agreement with Hund's first rule and experimental findings.

Enhanced room temperature ferromagnetism in nanostructured MoS2 flakes by hydrogen post-treatment: Combined experimental and first-principles-based studies
By means of first principles calculations, we have systematically investigated how the magnetodynamic properties Gilbert damping, magnetization and exchange stiffness are affected when permalloy (Py) (Fe$_{0.19}$Ni$_{0.81}$) is doped with 4d or 5d transition metal impurities. We find that the trends in the Gilbert damping can be understood from relatively few basic parameters such as the density of states at the Fermi level, the spin-orbit coupling and the impurity concentration. % The temperature dependence of the Gilbert damping is found to be very weak which we relate to the lack of intraba…
Heterostructures made from topological and magnetic insulators promise to form excellent platforms for new electronic and spintronic functionalities mediated by interfacial effects. We report the results of a first-principles density functional theory study of the geometric, electronic structure, and magnetic properties of EuS(111)/Bi$_2$Se$_3$ interface, including van der Waals and relativistic spin-orbit effects. In contrast to previous theoretical studies, we find no appreciable magnetic anisotropy in such a heterostructure. We also do not see additional induced magnetization at the interfa…
We present calculations of the magnetic ground states of Cr trimers in different geometries on top of a Au(111) surface. By using a least square fit method based on a fully relativistic embedded-cluster Green's function method first we determined the parameters of a classical vector-spin model consisting of second and fourth order interactions. The newly developed method requires no symmetry constraints, therefore, it is throughout applicable for small nanoparticles of arbitrary geometry. The magnetic ground states were then found by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. In all consid…
Based on first-principles calculations, we find novel valley-polarized quantum anomalous Hall (VP-QAH) phases with a large gap-0.19 eV at an appropriate buckled angle and tunable topological phase transitions driven by the spontaneous magnetization within a half-hydrogenated Bi honeycomb monolayer. Depending on the magnetization orientation, four different phases can emerge, i.e., two VP-QAH phases, ferromagnetic insulating and metallic states. When the magnetization is reversed from the +$\mathbf{z}$ to -$\mathbf{z}$ directions, accompanying with a sign change in the Chern number (from -1 to …
