Localized basis ab initio molecular dynamics simulation within the density functional framework has been used to generate realistic configurations of amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC). Our approach consists of constructing a set of smart initial configurations that conform essential geometrical and structural aspects of the materials obtained from experimental data, which is subsequently driven via first-principles force-field to obtain the best solution in a reduced solution space. A combination of a priori information (primarily structural and topological) along with the ab-initio optimization of the total energy makes it possible to model large system size (1000 atoms) without compromising the quantum mechanical accuracy of the force-field to describe the complex bonding chemistry of Si and C. The structural, electronic and the vibrational properties of the models have been studied and compared to existing theoretical models and available data from experiments. We demonstrate that the approach is capable of producing large, realistic configurations of a-SiC from first-principles simulation that display excellent structural and electronic properties of a-SiC. Our study reveals the presence of predominant short-range order in the material originating from heteronuclear Si-C bonds with coordination defect concentration as small as 5% and the chemical disorder parameter of about 8%.
Exponential band edges have been observed in a variety of materials, both crystalline and amorphous. In this paper, we infer the structural origins of these tails in amorphous and defective crystalline Si by direct calculation with current {\it ab initio} methods. We find that exponential tails appear in relaxed models of diamond with suitable point defects. In amorphous silicon (a-Si), we find that structural filaments of short bonds and long bonds exist in the network, and that the tail states near the extreme edges of both band tails are are also filamentary, with much localization on the s…
We present an information-based total-energy optimization method to produce nearly defect-free structural models of amorphous silicon. Using geometrical, structural and topological information from disordered tetrahedral networks, we have shown that it is possible to generate structural configurations of amorphous silicon, which are superior than the models obtained from conventional reverse Monte Carlo and molecular-dynamics simulations. The new data-driven hybrid approach presented here is capable of producing atomistic models with structural and electronic properties which are on a par with…
We present here potential dependent mechanical properties of amorphous silicon studied through molecular dynamics (MD) at low temperature. On average, the localization of elementary plastic events and the co-ordination defect-sites appears to be correlated. For Tersoff potential and SW potential the plastic events centered on defects-sites prefer 5-fold defect sites, while for modified Stillinger-Weber potential such plastic events choose 3-fold defect sites. We also analyze the non-affine displacement field in amorphous silicon obtained for different shear regime. The non-affine displacement …
We study the statistical properties of the yielding transition in model amorphous solids in the limit of slow, athermal deformation. Plastic flow occurs via alternating phases of elastic loading punctuated by rapid dissipative events in the form of collective avalanches. We investigate their characterization through energy vs. stress drops and at multiple stages of deformation, thus revealing a change of spatial extent of the avalanches and degree of stress correlations as deformation progresses. We show that the statistics of stress and energy drops only become comparable for large events in …
The distribution of local residual stresses (threshold to instability) that controls the statistical properties of plastic flow in athermal amorphous solids is examined with an atomistic simulation technique. For quiescent configurations, the distribution has a pseudogap (power-law) form with an exponent that agrees well with global yielding statistics. As soon as deformation sets in, the pseudogap region gives way to a system size dependent plateau at small residual stresses that can be understood from the statistics of local residual stress {\em differences} between plastic events. Results f…
We discuss an inverse approach for atomistic modeling of glassy materials. The focus is on structural modeling and electronic properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon and glassy GeSe2 alloy. The work is based upon a new approach "experimentally constrained molecular relaxation (ECMR)". Unlike conventional approaches (such as molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo simulations(MC), where a potential function is specified and the system evolves either deterministically (MD) or stochastically (MC), we develop a novel scheme to model structural configurations using experimental data in associa…
By means of molecular dynamics simulations based on the Billeter et al. [S. R. Billeter, A. Curioni, D. Fischer, and W. Andreoni, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 155329] environment-dependent classical force field we studied the structural features of SiN$_x$ samples at various stoichiometries. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data and are able to reproduce some features which so far were not reproduced by simulations. In particular, we identified units containing N--N bonds, which are thought to be responsible for an unassigned peak in the radial distribution function obtained from …

We demonstrate that the amorphous material PAF-1, C[(C6H4)2]2, forms a continuous random network in which tetrahedral carbon sites are connected by 4,4'-biphenyl linkers. Experimental neutron total scattering measurements on deuterated, hydrogenous, and null-scattering samples agree with molecular dynamics simulations based on this model. From the MD model, we are able for the first time to interrogate the atomistic structure. The small-angle scattering is consistent with Porod scattering from particle surfaces, of the form Q^{-4}, where Q is the scattering vector. We measure a distinct peak i…
We use atomistic computer simulations to provide a microscopic description of the brittle failure of amorphous materials, and we assess the role of rare events and quenched disorder. We argue that brittle yielding originates at rare soft regions, similarly to Griffiths effects in disordered systems. We numerically demonstrate how localized plastic events in such soft regions trigger macroscopic failure via the propagation of a shear band. This physical picture, which no longer holds in poorly annealed ductile materials, allows us to discuss the role of finite size effects in brittle yielding a…
In this paper, we present ab initio computer models of Cu-doped amorphous Ta2O5 , a promising candidate for Conducting Bridge Random Access Memory (CBRAM) memory devices, and study the structural, electronic, charge transport and vibrational properties based on plane-wave density functional methods. We offer an atomistic picture of the process of phase segregation/separation between Cu and Ta2O5 subnetworks. Electronic calculations show that the models are conducting with extended Kohn-Sham orbitals around the Fermi level. In addition to that, we also characterize the electronic transport usin…
In this note, we calculate the electronic properties of a realistic atomistic model of amorphous graphene. The model contains odd membered rings, particularly five and seven membered rings and no coordination defects. We show that odd-membered rings increase the electronic density of states at the Fermi level relative to crystalline graphene; a honeycomb lattice with semi-metallic character. Some graphene samples contain amorphous regions, which even at small concentrations, may strongly affect many of the exotic properties of crystalline graphene, which arise because of the linear dispersion …
We present the results of numerical simulations of an atomistic system undergoing plastic shear flow in the athermal, quasistatic limit. The system is shown to undergo cascades of local rearrangements, associated with quadrupolar energy fluctuations, which induce system-spanning events organized into lines of slip oriented along the Bravais axes of the simulation cell. A finite size scaling analysis reveals subextensive scaling of the energy drops and participation numbers, linear in the length of the simulation cell, in good agreement with the observed real-space structure of the plastic even…
This paper reports the presence of extended-range ordering in the atomic pair-correlation function of amorphous silicon ($a$-Si) using ultra-large atomistic models obtained from Monte Carlo and molecular-dynamics simulations. The extended-range order manifests itself in the form of radial oscillations, on the length scale of 20-40 angstrom, which are examined by directly analyzing the radial distribution of atoms in distant coordination shells and comparing the same with those from a class of partially-ordered networks of Si atoms and disordered configurations of crystalline silicon from an in…
In recent years, there has been an intense interest in understanding the microscopic mechanism of thermally induced magnetization switching driven by a femtosecond laser pulse. Most of the effort has been dedicated to periodic crystalline structures while the amorphous counterparts have been less studied. By using a multiscale approach, i.e. first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we report here on the very intricate structural and magnetic nature of amorphous Gd-Fe alloys for a wide range of Gd and Fe atomic concentrations at the nanoscale level. Both…
The atomistic modeling of amorphous materials requires structure sizes and sampling statistics that are challenging to achieve with first-principles methods. Here, we propose a methodology to speed up the sampling of amorphous and disordered materials using a combination of a genetic algorithm and a specialized machine-learning potential based on artificial neural networks (ANN). We show for the example of the amorphous LiSi alloy that around 1,000 first-principles calculations are sufficient for the ANN potential assisted sampling of low-energy atomic configurations in the entire amorphous Li…
It is widely accepted in the materials modeling community that defect-free realistic networks of amorphous silicon cannot be prepared by quenching from a molten state of silicon using classical or ab initio molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. In this work, we address this long-standing problem by producing nearly defect-free ultra-large models of amorphous silicon, consisting of up to half-a-million atoms, using classical molecular-dynamics simulations. The structural, topological, electronic, and vibrational properties of the models are presented and compared with experimental data. A compar…
Qubits made from superconducting materials are a mature platform for quantum information science application such as quantum computing. However, materials-based losses are now a limiting factor in reaching the coherence times needed for applications. In particular, knowledge of the atomistic structure and properties of the circuit materials is needed to identify, understand, and mitigate materials-based decoherence channels. In this work we characterize the atomic structure of the native oxide film formed on Nb resonators by comparing fluctuation electron microscopy experiments to density func…

We generalise the non-affine theory of viscoelasticity for use with large, well-sampled systems of arbitrary chemical complexity. Having in mind predictions of mechanical and vibrational properties of amorphous systems with atomistic resolution, we propose an extension of the Kernel Polynomial Method (KPM) for the computation of the vibrational density of states (VDOS) and the eigenmodes, including the $Γ$-correlator of the affine force-field, which is a key ingredient of lattice-dynamic calculations of viscoelasticity. We show that the results converge well to the solution obtained by direct …
