We study full counting statistics of electron transport through a Majorana single-charge transistor. At low bias voltage, transport is dominated by the so-called Josephson-Majorana cycle, a sequence of normal and anomalous single-charge and Josephson tunneling. Factorial cumulants characterizing the full counting statistics elucidate the correlated nature of the charge transfers in this cycle. Moreover, we predict a topological transition in the full counting statistics from a perfect Poissonian transfer of Cooper pairs to a correlated switching between two distinct fermion parity states with increasing Josephson coupling.
Charge transport through a small topological superconducting island in contact with a normal and a superconducting electrode occurs through a cycle that involves coherent oscillations of Cooper pairs and tunneling in/out the normal electrode through a Majorana bound state, the Josephson-Majorana cycle. We illustrate this mechanism by studying the current-voltage characteristics of a superconductor-topological superconductor-normal metal single-electron transistor. At low bias and temperature the Josephson-Majorana cycle is the dominant mechanism for transport. We discuss a three-terminal confi…
We study transport through a Coulomb blockaded topologically nontrivial superconducting wire (with Majorana end states) contacted by metallic leads. An exact formula for the current through this interacting Majorana single-charge transistor is derived in terms of wire spectral functions. A comprehensive picture follows from three different approaches. We find Coulomb oscillations with universal halving of the finite-temperature peak conductance under strong blockade conditions, where the valley conductance mainly comes from elastic cotunneling. The nonlinear conductance exhibits finite-voltage…
We propose the manipulation of Majorana edge states via hybridization and spin currents in a nanowire spin transistor. The spin transistor is based on a heterostructure nanowire comprising of semiconductors with large and small g-factors that form the topological and non-topological regions respectively. The hybridization of bound edge states results in spin currents and $4π$-periodic torques, as a function of the relative magnetic field angle -- an effect which is dual to the fractional Josephson effect. We establish relation between torques and spin-currents in the non-topological region whe…
The magnetopolaronic generalization of a Majorana-resonant-level (MRL) model is considered for a single-level vibrating quantum dot coupled to two half-infinite $g=1/2$ Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) leads. A qualitatively new non-trivial formula for the effective transmission coefficient and differential conductance for resonant magnetopolaron-assisted tunneling is obtained under the assumption about a fermion-boson factorization of corresponding averages. This approach is valid for the case of weak magnetopolaronic coupling in a system. Surprisingly, it is found that despite a supposed weak…
A demonstration of the theoretically predicted non-abelian properties of Majorana bound states (MBSs) would constitute a definite proof of a topological superconducting phase. Alongside the nontrivial braiding statistics, the fusion rules are fundamental properties of all non-abelian anyons. In this work, we propose and theoretically analyze a way to demonstrate MBS fusion rules in a Majorana single-charge transistor. Our proposal reduces both the number of operations and the device complexity compared to previous designs. Furthermore, we show that the fusion protocol can be adapted to pump a …
We propose an approach for probing Majorana bound states (MBSs) in a nanowire via counting statistics of a nearby charge detector in the form of a single-electron transistor (SET). We consider the impacts on the counting statistics by both the local coupling between the detector and an adjacent MBS at one end of a nanowire and the nonlocal coupling to the MBS at the other end. We show that the Fano factor and the skewness of the SET current are minimized for a symmetric SET configuration in the absence of the MBSs or when coupled to a fermionic state. However, the minimum points of operation a…
We evaluate the current distribution for a single-electron transistor with intermediate strength tunnel conductance. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh approach and the drone (Majorana) fermion representation we account for the renormalization of system parameters. Nonequilibrium effects induce a lifetime broadening of the charge-state levels, which suppress large current fluctuations.
Using the Schwinger-Keldysh approach and the drone (Majorana) fermion representation, we evaluate current distribution in a single-electron transistor in a regime where a total tunnel resistance is small. Nonequilibrium quantum fluctuations of charge induce a lifetime broadening of charge-state level, as well as renormalization of system parameters. We find that the lifetime broadening effect may suppress the probability of relatively large current.
Using a simple quantum master equation approach, we calculate the Full Counting Statistics of a single electron transistor strongly coupled to vibrations. The Full Counting Statistics contains both the statistics of integrated particle and energy currents associated to the transferred electrons and phonons. A universal as well as an effective fluctuation theorem are derived for the general case where the various reservoir temperatures and chemical potentials are different. The first relates to the entropy production generated in the junction while the second reveals internal information of the…
Recently, the connection between Majorana fermions bound to defects in arbitrary dimensions, and complex momentum roots of the vanishing determinant of the corresponding bulk Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian, has been established (EPL, 2015, $\textbf{110}$, 67005). Based on this understanding, a formula has been proposed to count the number ($n$) of the zero energy Majorana bound states, which is related to the topological phase of the system. In this paper, we provide a proof of the counting formula and we apply this formula to a variety of 1d and 2d models belonging to the classes BDI,…
We develop a conceptually simple scheme based on a master-equation approach to evaluate the full-counting statistics (FCS) of elastic and inelastic off-resonant tunneling (cotunneling) in quantum dots (QDs) and molecules. We demonstrate the method by showing that it reproduces known results for the FCS and shot noise in the cotunneling regime. For a QD with an excited state, we obtain an analytic expression for the cumulant generating function (CGF) taking into account elastic and inelastic cotunneling. From the CGF we find that the shot noise above the inelastic threshold in the cotunneling r…
We report on the electric measurements of an individual Au nanoparticle with an ultra-high contact resistance of about $10^{19} Ω$. The high-impedance measurements have been carried out by counting the electrons that are transferred onto the particle. In order to do this, a carbon nanotube is used as the electrode for the supply of electrons but also as the detector of the charge transfer. Measurements using single-electron detection allow us to determine the separation between the electron states in the Au nanoparticle, which is about 4 meV, consistent with the charging energy of the particle…
We study a Cooper pair transistor realized by a mesoscopic superconductor island that couples to a pair of $s$-wave superconducting leads. For a trivial island, the critical supercurrent between the leads exhibits a well-known $2e$-periodicity in the island-gate charge. Here, we show that for an island with spatially separated zero-energy Majorana or Andreev bound states the periodicity of the magnitude of the critical supercurrent transitions to $1e$ in the island-gate charge. Moreover, for Andreev bound states the current-phase relation displays a sign reversal when the parity of the charge …
We study transport properties of a quantum dot coupled to a Majorana zero mode and two normal leads. We investigate the full counting statistics of charge tunneling events which allows one to extract complete information about current fluctuations. Using a Keldysh path-integral approach, we compute the cumulant generating function. We first consider a noninteracting spinless regime, and find that for the symmetric dot-lead couplings, the zero-frequency cumulants exhibit a universal pattern of Euler numbers, independent of the microscopic parameters. For a spinful case, the Coulomb interaction …
Developing a gate-tunable, scalable, and topologically-protectable supercurrent qubit and integrating it into a quantum circuit are crucial for applications in the fields of quantum information technology and topological phenomena. Here we propose that the nano-hybrid supercurrent transistors, a superconducting quantum analogue of a transistor, made of topological insulator nanowire would be a promising platform for unprecedented control of both the supercurrent magnitude and the current-phase relation by applying a voltage on a gate electrode. We believe that our experimental design will help…
We study the full counting statistics of interferometers for chiral Majorana fermions with two incoming and two outgoing Dirac fermion channels. In the absence of interactions, the FCS can be obtained from the $4\times4$ scattering matrix $S$ that relates the outgoing Dirac fermions to the incoming Dirac fermions. After presenting explicit expressions for the higher-order current correlations for a modified Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometer, we note that the cumulant-generating function can be interpreted such that unit-charge transfer processes correspond to two independent half-charge trans…
We demonstrate that it is possible to use atomic manipulation techniques to adiabatically tune between one-dimensional and two-dimensional topological superconductors in magnet--superconductor hybrid (MSH) structures. This allows one to change the nature of the associated Majorana fermions between localized bound states and chiral Majorana edge modes, and provides a new approach for counting the topological invariant of the system -- the Chern number -- in real space. Moreover, we show that the topological nature of finite-size MSH structures can be characterized using the Chern number density…
Quantum mechanical effects induced by the miniaturization of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology hamper the performance and scalability prospects of field-effect transistors. However, those quantum effects, such as tunnelling and coherence, can be harnessed to use existing CMOS technology for quantum information processing. Here, we report the observation of coherent charge oscillations in a double quantum dot formed in a silicon nanowire transistor detected via its dispersive interaction with a radio-frequency resonant circuit coupled via the gate. Differential capacitan…
The parity modulation of the ground state of a superconducting island is a direct consequence of the presence of the Cooper pair condensate preferring an even number of charge carriers. The addition energy of an odd, unpaired quasiparticle equals to the superconducting gap, $Δ$, suppressing single electron hopping in the low temperature limit. Controlling the quasiparticle occupation is of fundamental importance for superconducting qubits as single electron tunneling results in decoherence. In particular, topological quantum computation relies on the parity control and readout of Majorana boun…
We analyse the full counting statistics of charge transfer through a Majorana bound state coupled to an STM tip and show how they can be used for an unambiguous identification of the bound state at the end of the wire. Additionally, we show how to generate Majorana bound states in a simple setup involving a ferromagnetic wire on a superconducting substrate.
We discuss the counting statistics and current noise associated with the double Josephson quasiparticle resonance point in a superconducting single electron transistor. The counting statistics are in general phase-dependent, despite the fact that the average current has no dependence on phase. Focusing on parameter regimes where the counting statistics have no phase-dependence, we use a general relation first derived by MacDonald in 1948 to obtain the full frequency-dependent shot noise directly from the counting statistics, without any further approximations. We comment on problems posed by t…
We present a theory of full counting statistics for electron transport through interacting electron systems with non-Markovian dynamics. We illustrate our approach for transport through a single-level quantum dot and a metallic single-electron transistor to second order in the tunnel-coupling strength, and discuss under which circumstances non-Markovian effects appear in the transport properties.
Parity control of superconducting islands hosting Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is required to operate topological qubits made from proximitized semiconductor nanowires. We, therefore, study parity effects in hybrid InAs-Al single-Cooper-pair transistors (SCPTs) as a first step. In particular, we investigate the gate-charge supercurrent modulation and observe a consistent 2$e$-periodic pattern indicating a general lack of low-energy subgap states in these nanowires at zero magnetic field. In a parallel magnetic field, an even-odd pattern develops with a gate-charge spacing that oscillates as a fu…
In this article we analyze the efficiency of operations based on transferring charge from a quantum dot (QD) to two coupled topological superconductors, which can be used for performing nonabelian operations on Majorana bound states (MBSs). We develop a method which allows us to describe the full time-evolution of the system as the QD energy is manipulated. Using a full counting statistics analysis, we set bounds to the operation time scales. The lower bound depends on the superconducting phase difference due to a partial decoupling of the different MBSs parity sectors, while the upper bound i…
We study the full charge counting statistics of a charge pump based on a nearly open single electron transistor. The problem is mapped onto an exactly soluble problem of a g=1/2 non-equilibrium Luttinger liquid with an impurity. We obtain an analytic expression for the generating function of the transmitted charge for an arbitrary pumping strength. Even though this model contains fractionally charged excitations only integer transmitted charges can be observed during finite observation times.
A theoretical approach for the non-equilibrium transport properties of nanoscale systems coupled to metallic electrodes with strong electron-phonon interactions is presented. It consists in a resummation of the dominant Feynman diagrams from the perturbative expansion in the coupling to the leads. We show that this scheme eliminates the main pathologies found in previous simple analytical approaches for the polaronic regime. The results for the spectral and transport properties are compared with those from several other approaches for a wide range of parameters. The method can be formulated in…

We study charge transport in a single-electron transistor implemented as an interferometer such that the Coulomb blockaded middle island contains a circular chiral Majorana or Dirac edge mode. We concentrate on the regime of small conductance and provide an asymptotic solution in the limit of high transport voltage exceeding the charging energy. The solution is achieved using an instanton-like technique. The distinctions between Majorana and Dirac cases appears when the tunnel junctions are unequal. The main difference is in the offset current at high voltages which can be higher up to $50\%$ …
We investigate spin and charge dynamics of a quantum dot of phosphorus atoms coupled to a radio-frequency single-electron transistor (rf-SET) using full counting statistics. We show how the magnetic field plays a role in determining the bunching or anti-bunching tunnelling statistics of the donor dot and SET system. Using the counting statistics we show how to determine the lowest magnetic field where spin-readout is possible. We then show how such a measurement can be used to investigate and optimise single electron spin-readout fidelity.
We report electron counting experiments in a silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor quantum dot architecture which has been previously demonstrated to generate a quantized current in excess of 80 pA with uncertainty below 30 parts per million. Single-shot detection of electrons pumped into a reservoir dot is performed using a capacitively coupled single-electron transistor. We extract the full probability distribution of the transfer of n electrons per pumping cycle for n = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. We find that the probabilities extracted from the counting experiment are in agreement with direct current …
Feedback control of quantum mechanical systems is rapidly attracting attention not only due to fundamental questions about quantum measurements but also because of its novel applications in many fields in physics. Quantum control has been studied intensively in quantum optics but recently progress has been made in the control of solid-state qubits as well. In quantum transport only a few active and passive feedback experiments have been realized on the level of single-electrons, though theoretical proposals exist. Here we demonstrate the suppression of shot noise in a single-electron transisto…
Spin pumping consists in the injection of spin currents into a non-magnetic material due to the precession of an adjacent ferromagnet. In addition to the pumping of spin the precession always leads to pumping of heat, but in the presence of spin-orbital entanglement it also leads to a charge current. We investigate the pumping of charge, spin and heat in a device where a superconductor and a quantum spin Hall insulator are in proximity contact with a ferromagnetic insulator. We show that the device supports two robust operation regimes arising from topological effects. In one regime, the pumpe…
Radio-frequency (RF) reflectometry is implemented in hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowire systems designed to probe Majorana zero modes. Two approaches are presented. In the first, hybrid nanowire-based devices are part of a resonant circuit, allowing conductance to be measured as a function of several gate voltages ~40 times faster than using conventional low-frequency lock-in methods. In the second, nanowire devices are capacitively coupled to a nearby RF single-electron transistor made from a separate nanowire, allowing RF detection of charge, including charge-only measurement of th…
We investigate electron transport through multiterminal networks hosting Majorana bound states (MBS) in the framework of full counting statistics (FCS). In particular, we apply our general results to T-shaped junctions of two Majorana nanowires. When the wires are in the topologically nontrivial regime, three MBS are localized near the outer ends of the wires, while one MBS is localized near the crossing point, and when the lengths of the wires are finite adjacent MBS can overlap. We propose a combination of current and cross-correlation measurements to reveal the predicted coupling of four Ma…
Graphene is considered to be a promising material for future electronics. The envisaged transistor applications often rely on precision cutting of graphene sheets with nanometer accuracy. In this letter we demonstrate graphene-based quantum dots created by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) with tip-assisted electrochemical etching. This lithography technique provides resolution of about 20 nm, which can probably be further improved by employing sharper tips and better humidity control. The behavior of our smallest dots in magnetic field has allowed us to identify the charge neutrality point …
We consider a system of two solid state charge qubits, coupled to a single read-out device, consisting of a single-electron transistor (SET). The conductance of each tunnel junction is influenced by its neighboring qubit, and thus the current through the transistor is determined by the qubits' state. The full counting statistics of the electrons passing the transistor is calculated, and we discuss qubit dephasing, as well as the quantum efficiency of the readout. The current measurement is then compared to readout using real-time detection of the SET island's charge state. For the latter metho…
The electron number-parity of the ground state of a semiconductor narowire proximity-coupled to a bulk superconductor can alternate between the quantised values $\pm 1$ if parameters such as the wire length $L$, the chemical potential $μ$ or the magnetic field $B$ are varied inside the topological superconductor phase. % The parity jumps, which may be interpreted as changes in the occupancy of the fermion state formed from the pair of Majorana modes at opposite ends of the wire, are accompanied by jumps $δN$ in the charge of the nanowire, whose values decrease exponentially with the wire lengt…
In this paper, we investigate the transport properties of spinful electrons tunnel-coupled to a finite-length Majorana nanowire on one end which is further tunnel-coupled to a quantum dot (QD) at the other end. Using a full counting statistics approach, we show that Andreev reflection can happen in two separate channels that can be associated with the two spin states of the tunneling electrons. In a low-energy model for the nanowire that is represented by two overlapping Majorana bound states (MBSs) localized at the ends of the wire, analytical formulas for conductance and noise reveal their c…
We develop a scheme for the computation of the full-counting statistics of transport described by Markovian master equations with an arbitrary time dependence. It is based on a hierarchy of generalized density operators, where the trace of each operator yields one cumulant. This direct relation offers a better numerical efficiency than the equivalent number-resolved master equation. The proposed method is particularly useful for conductors with an elaborate time-dependence stemming, e.g., from pulses or combinations of slow and fast parameter switching. As a test bench for the evaluation of th…
The generating function for the cumulants of charge current distribution is calculated for two generalised Majorana resonant level models: the Kondo dot at the Toulouse point and the resonant level embedded in a Luttinger liquid with the interaction parameter $g=1/2$. We find that the low--temperature non-equilibrium transport in the Kondo case occurs via tunnelling of physical electrons as well as by coherent transmission of electron pairs. We calculate the third cumulant (`skewness') explicitly and analyse it for different couplings, temperatures, and magnetic fields. For the $g=1/2$ set-up …
We examine the heat and charge transport of a driven topological superconductor. Our particular system of interest consists of a Y-junction of topological superconducting wires, hosting non-Abelian Majorana zero modes at their edges. The system is contacted to two leads which act as continuous detectors of the system state. We calculate, via a scattering matrix approach, the full counting statistics of the driven heat transport, between two terminals contacted to the system, for small adiabatic driving and characterise the energy transport properties as a function of the system parameters (dri…
Motivated by recent real-time electron counting experiments, we evaluate the full counting statistics (FCS) for the probability distribution of the electron number inside a quantum dot which is weakly coupled to source and drain leads. A non-Gaussian exponential distribution appears when there is no dot state close to the lead chemical potentials. We propose the measurement of the joint probability distribution of current and electron number, which reveals correlations between the two observables. We also show that for increasing strength of tunneling, the quantum fluctuations qualitatively ch…
We study Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interferometry under the influence of projective readout using a charge qubit tunnel-coupled to a fermionic sea. This allows us to characterise the coherent charge qubit dynamics in the strong-driving regime. The device is realised within a silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) transistor. We first read out the charge state of the system in a continuous non-demolition manner by measuring the dispersive response of a high-frequency electrical resonator coupled to the quantum system via the gate. By performing multiple fast pass…
We use a Ge-Si core-shell nanowire to realise a Josephson field-effect transistor with highly transparent contacts to superconducting leads. By changing the electric field we gain access to two distinct regimes not combined before in a single device: In the accumulation mode the device is highly transparent and the supercurrent is carried by multiple subbands, while near depletion supercurrent is carried by single-particle levels of a strongly coupled quantum dot operating in the few-hole regime. These results establish Ge-Si nanowires as an important platform for hybrid superconductor-semicon…
The non-Abelian statistics of Majorana fermions, their role in topological quantum computation, and the possibility of realizing them in condensed matter systems, has attracted considerable attention. While there have been recent reports of zero energy modes in single particle tunneling density of states, their identity as Majorana modes has so far not been unequivocally established. We make predictions for the local compressibility $κ_{\rm{loc}}$, tuned by changing the chemical potential $μ$ in a semiconducting nanowire with strong spin-orbit coupling and in a Zeeman field in proximity to a s…
The analysis of single-mode photon fluctuations and their counting statistics at the superradiant phase transition is presented. The study concerns the equilibrium Dicke model in a regime where the Rabi frequency, related to a coupling of the photon mode with a finite-number qubit environment, plays a role of the transition's control parameter. We use the effective Matsubara action formalism based on the representation of Pauli operators as bilinear forms with complex and Majorana fermions. Then, we address fluctuations of superradiant order parameter and quasiparticles. The average photon num…
We report a direct detection of time correlated single-electron tunneling oscillations in a series array of small tunnel junctions. Here the current, I, is made up of a lattice of charge solitons moving throughout the array by time correlated tunneling with the frequency f=I/e, where e is the electron charge. To detect the single charges, we have integrated the array with a radio-frequency single-electron transistor (RF-SET) and employed two different methods to couple the array to the SET input: by direct injection through a tunnel junction, and by capacitive coupling. In this paper we report…
The Majorana fermions propagating along the edge of a topological superconductor with $p_x+ip_y$ pairing deliver a shot noise power of $\frac{1}{2}\times e^2/h$ per eV of voltage bias. We calculate the full counting statistics of the transferred charge and find that it becomes trinomial in the low-temperature limit, distinct from the binomial statistics of charge-$e$ transfer in a single-mode nanowire or charge-$2e$ transfer through a normal-superconductor interface. All even-order correlators of current fluctuations have a universal quantized value, insensitive to disorder and decoherence. Th…
The notion of fractional charges was up until now reserved for quasiparticle excitations emerging in strongly correlated quantum systems, such as Laughlin states in the fractional quantum Hall effect, Luttinger quasiparticles, or parafermions. Here, we consider topological transitions in the full counting statistics of standard sequential electron tunneling, and find that they lead to the same type of charge fractionalization - strikingly without requiring exotic quantum correlations. This conclusion relies on the realization that fundamental integer charge quantization fixes the global proper…
