A generalization of the congruent number problem is to find positive integers $n$ that appear as the areas of Heron triangles. Selmer group of a congruent number elliptic curve has been studied quite extensively. Here, we look into the $2$-Selmer group structure for Heronian elliptic curves associated with Heron triangles of area $n$ and one of the angle $θ$ such that $\tan \fracθ{2} = n^{-1}$ and $n^{2}+1=2q$ for some prime $q$.
Given any positive integer n, it is well known that there always exist triangles with rational sides a, b and c such that the area of the triangle is n. Assuming finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group, we first construct a family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves of rank exactly 1 from Heron triangles of a certain type. We also explicitly produce a separate family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves with 2-Selmer rank lying between 1 and 3.
We explicitly compute the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve using the Albanese-Albanese definition of the pairing given by Poonen and Stoll. This leads to a new proof that a pairing defined by Cassels on the 2-Selmer groups of elliptic curves agrees with the Cassels-Tate pairing.
We prove that when all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ are ordered by height, the average size of their 4-Selmer groups is equal to 7. As a consequence, we show that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one fifth) of all 2-Selmer elements of elliptic curves, when ordered by height, do not lift to 4-Selmer elements, and thus correspond to nontrivial 2-torsion elements in the associated Tate--Shafarevich groups.
Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves over noncommutative extensions has been a fruitful area of research. The central object of this paper is to use Iwasawa theory over the $GL(2)$ extension to study the dual Selmer group over the $PGL(2)$ extension.
In this paper, we prove that when elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ are ordered by height, the second moment of the size of the $2$-Selmer group is at most $15$. This confirms a conjecture of Poonen and Rains.
Let $f$ be an elliptic modular form and $p$ an odd prime that is coprime to the level of $f$. We study the link between divisors of the characteristic ideal of the $p$-primary fine Selmer group of $f$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ and the greatest common divisor of signed Selmer groups attached to $f$ defined using the theory of Wach modules. One of the key ingredients of our proof is a generalization of a result of Wingberg on the structure of fine Selmer groups of abelian varieties with supersingular reduction at $p$ to the context of modular forms.
We extend the method of Cassels for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, to the case of 3-Selmer groups. This requires significant modifications to both the local and global parts of the calculation. Our method is practical in sufficiently small examples, and can be used to improve the upper bound for the rank of an elliptic curve obtained by 3-descent.
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having…

We study the growth of the Galois invariants of the $p$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve in a degree $p$ Galois extension. We show that this growth is determined by certain local cohomology groups and determine necessary and sufficient conditions for these groups to be trivial. Under certain hypotheses this allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be growth in the full $p$-Selmer group in a degree $p$ Galois extension.
We generalize a result of Frey [Fre88] on the Selmer group of twists of elliptic curves over Q with Q-rational torsion points to elliptic curves defined over number fields of small degree K with a K-rational point. We also provide examples of elliptic curves coming from [Zyw15] that satisfy the conditions of our Theorem B.
We study the $2$-Selmer ranks of elliptic curves. We prove that for an arbitrary elliptic curve $E$ over an arbitrary number field $K$, if the set $A_E$ of 2-Selmer ranks of quadratic twists of $E$ contains an integer $c$, it contains all integers larger than $c$ and having the same parity as $c$. We also find sufficient conditions on $A_E$ such that $A_E$ is equal to $\Z_{\ge t_E}$ for some number $t_E$. When all points in $E[2]$ are rational, we give an upper bound for $t_E$.
Given an elliptic curve E over the rational with no rational 2-torsion points, we prove the existence of a quadratic twist of E for which the 2-Selmer rank is less than or equal to 1. By the author's earlier result, we establish a lower bound on the number of D's for which the twists E(D) have 2-Selmer rank <= 1. We include in the introduction our (brief) opinion about why it is supposed to be hard to push our technique to make the Selmer group trivial.
Let $K$ be a number field and $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with no $2$-torsion points. In the present article we give lower and upper bounds for the $2$-Selmer rank of $E$ in terms of the $2$-torsion of a narrow class group of a certain cubic extension of $K$ attached to $E$. As an application, we prove (under mild hypotheses) that a positive proportion of prime conductor quadratic twists of $E$ have the same $2$-Selmer group.
It is known, that for every elliptic curve over Q there exists a quadratic extension in which the rank does not go up. For a large class of elliptic curves, the same is known with the rank replaced by the 2-Selmer group. We show, however, that there exists a large supply of semistable elliptic curves E/Q whose 2-Selmer group goes up in every bi-quadratic extension and for any odd prime p, the p-Selmer group goes up in every D_{2p}-extension and every elementary abelian p-extension of rank at least 2. We provide a simple criterion for an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field to exhibit …
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $F_\infty$ be a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a number field $F$. Given an elliptic curve $E$ over $F$, we study the structure of the fine Selmer group over $F_\infty$. It is shown that under certain conditions, the fine Selmer group is a cofinitely generated module over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ and furthermore, we obtain an upper bound for its corank (i.e., the $λ$-invariant), in terms of various local and global invariants.
We consider elliptic curves over global fields of positive characteristic with two distinct marked non-trivial rational points. Restricting to a certain subfamily of the universal one, we show that the average size of the 2-Selmer groups of these curves exists, in a natural sense, and equals 12. Along the way, we consider a map from these 2-Selmer groups to the moduli space of $G$-torsors over an algebraic curve, where $G$ is isogenous to $\mathrm{SL}_2^4$, and show that the images of 2-Selmer elements under this map become equidistributed in the limit.
Let $E$ be a modular elliptic curve over a totally real cubic field. We have a cubic-triple product motive over $\mathbb{Q}$ constructed from $E$ through multiplicative induction; it is of rank $8$. We show that, under certain assumptions on $E$, the non-vanishing of the central critical value of the $L$-function attached to the motive implies that the dimension of the associated Bloch-Kato Selmer group is $0$.
We bound Selmer groups attached to Grossencharacters of CM elliptic curves by the appropriate $L$-value. Our method is to use Kato's explicit reciprocity law and the Main Conjecture as proved by Rubin. These results are then used together with work of Han and fundamental results of Nekovar to bound the torsion in the image of the $p$-adic cycle class map for self products of CM elliptic curves. Our results are valid for Chow groups of arbitrary codimension for almost all $p$.
Let $ p $ and $ q $ be odd prime numbers with $ q - p = 2, $ the $φ-$Selmer groups, Shafarevich-Tate groups ($ φ- $ and $ 2-$part) and their dual ones as well the Mordell-Weil groups of elliptic curves $ y^{2} = x (x \pm p) (x \pm q) $ over imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one are determined explicitly in many cases.
The elliptic curve $E_k \colon y^2 = x^3 + k$ admits a natural 3-isogeny $ϕ_k \colon E_k \to E_{-27k}$. We compute the average size of the $ϕ_k$-Selmer group as $k$ varies over the integers. Unlike previous results of Bhargava and Shankar on $n$-Selmer groups of elliptic curves, we show that this average can be very sensitive to congruence conditions on $k$; this sensitivity can be precisely controlled by the Tamagawa numbers of $E_k$ and $E_{-27k}$. As consequences, we prove that the average rank of the curves $E_k$, $k\in\mathbb Z$, is less than 1.21 and over $23\%$ (resp. $41\%$) of the cur…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We attach appropriate signed Selmer groups to an elliptic curve $E$, where $E$ is assumed to have semistable reduction at all primes above $p$. We then compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of these signed Selmer groups for two congruent elliptic curves over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension in the spirit of Greenberg-Vatsal and B. D. Kim. As an application of our comparsion formula, we show that if the $p$-parity conjecture is true for one of the congruent elliptic curves, then it is also true for the other elliptic curve. In the midst of proving this latter result…
For an elliptic curve over the rational number field and a prime number $p$, we study the structure of the classical Selmer group of $p$-power torsion points. In our previous paper \cite{Ku6}, assuming the main conjecture and the non-degeneracy of the $p$-adic height pairing, we proved that the structure of the Selmer group with respect to $p$-power torsion points is determined by some analytic elements $\tildeδ_{m}$ defined from modular symbols. In this paper, we do not assume the main conjecture nor the non-degeneracy of the $p$-adic height pairing, and study the structure of Selmer groups, …
The aim of this article is to give some numerical data related to the order of the Selmer groups in twist families of elliptic curves. To do this we assume the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is true and we use a celebrated theorem of Waldspurger to get a fast algorithm to compute $% L_{E}(1)$. Having an extensive amount of data we compare the distribution of the order of the Selmer groups by functions of type $α\frac{(\log \log (X))^{1+\varepsilon}}{\log (X)}$ with $\varepsilon $ small. We discuss how the "best choice" of $α$ is depending on the conductor of the chosen elliptic curves an…
In this paper, we study completely faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules with applications to the study of Selmer groups. Namely, if $G$ is a nonabelian group belonging to certain classes of polycyclic pro-$p$ group, we establish the abundance of faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules, i.e., non-trivial torsion modules whose global annihilator ideal is zero. We then show that such $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules occur naturally in arithmetic, namely in the form of Selmer groups of elliptic curves and Selmer groups of Hida deformations. It is interesting to note that faithful Selmer gr…
The class number divisibility problem for number fields is one of the classical problems in algebraic number theory, which originated from Gauss' class number conjectures. The relation between the points on an elliptic curve and class number divisibility of a number field has been explored through the works of various mathematicians. Here, we explicitly construct an unramified abelian extension of a bi-quadratic field generated from points of a certain type of elliptic curve. Moreover, showing the $2$-Selmer rank of the said elliptic curve as $1$, we also construct an infinite family of bi-qua…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, $E$ an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Suppose that $E$ has good reduction at any prime lying above $p$, and has supersingular reduction at some prime lying above $p$. In this paper, we construct the plus and the minus Selmer groups of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extension in a more general setting than that of B.D. Kim, and give a generalization of a result of B.D. Kim on the triviality of finite $Λ$-submodules of the Pontryagin duals of the plus and the minus Selmer groups, where $Λ$ is the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group of the $\mat…
We study the parity of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of an arbitrary elliptic curve E over an arbitrary number field K. We prove that the fraction of twists (of a given elliptic curve over a fixed number field) having even 2-Selmer rank exists as a stable limit over the family of twists, and we compute this fraction as an explicit product of local factors. We give an example of an elliptic curve E such that as K varies, these fractions are dense in [0, 1]. More generally, our results also apply to p-Selmer ranks of twists of 2-dimensional self-dual F_p-representations of the…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F'$ such that $E$ has semistable reduction at every prime of $F'$ above $p$ and is supersingular at at least one prime above $p$. Under appropriate hypotheses, we compute the Akashi series of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over a $\mathbb{Z}_p^d$-extension over a finite extension $F$ of $F'$. As a by-product, we also compute the Euler characteristics of these Selmer groups.
This paper investigates which integers can appear as 2-Selmer ranks within the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve E defined over a number field K with E(K)[2] = Z/2Z. We show that if E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]), then subject only to constant 2-Selmer parity, each non-negative integer appears infinitely often as the 2-Selmer rank of a quadratic twist of E. If E has a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]) but not over K, then we prove the same result for 2-Selmer ranks greater than or equal to r_2, the number of complex places of K. We also obtain results abo…
The study of $n$-Selmer group of elliptic curve over number field in recent past has led to the discovery of some deep results in the arithmetic of elliptic curves. Given two elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over a number field $K$, Mazur-Rubin\cite{mr} have defined them to be {\it $n$-Selmer companion} if for every quadratic twist $χ$ of $K$, the $n$-Selmer groups of $E_1^χ$ and $E_2^χ$ over $K$ are isomorphic. Given a prime $p$, they have given sufficient conditions for two elliptic curves to be $p^r$-Selmer companion in terms of mod-$p^r$ congruences between the curves. We discuss an analogu…
A weaker form of a 1979 conjecture of Goldfeld states that for every elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, a positive proportion of its quadratic twists $E^{(d)}$ have rank 1. Using tools from Galois cohomology, we give criteria on E and d which force a positive proportion of the quadratic twists of E to have 3-Selmer rank 1 and global root number -1. We then give four nonisomorphic infinite families of elliptic curves $E_{m, n}$ which satisfy these criteria. Conditional on the rank part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this verifies the aforementioned conjecture for infinitely many ellip…
Let $F$ be a function field of characteristic $p>0$, $\F/F$ a Galois extension with $Gal(\F/F)\simeq \Z_l^d$ (for some prime $l\neq p$) and $E/F$ a non-isotrivial elliptic curve. We study the behaviour of Selmer groups $Sel_E(L)_r$ ($r$ any prime) as $L$ varies through the subextensions of $\F$ via appropriate versions of Mazur's Control Theorem. As a consequence we prove that $Sel_E(\F)_r$ is a cofinitely generated (in some cases cotorsion) $\Z_r[[Gal(\F/F)]]$-module.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field which has good reduction at every prime above $p$. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that the $η$-eigenspace and the $\barη$-eigenspace of mixed signed Selmer group of the elliptic curve are pseudo-isomorphic. As a corollary, we show that the $η$-eigenspace is trivial if and only if the $\barη$-eigenspace is trivial. Our results can be thought as a reflection principle which relate an Iwasawa module in a given eigenspace with another Iwasawa module in a "reflected" eigenspace.
In 2016, Balakrishnan-Ho-Kaplan-Spicer-Stein-Weigandt produced a database of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which they computed the rank, the size of the $2$-Selmer group, and other arithmetic invariants. They observed that after a certain point, the average rank seemed to decrease as the height increased. Here we consider the family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose rational torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$. Conditional on GRH and BSD, we compute the rank of $92\%$ of the $202461$ curves with parameter he…
In this paper, we study the Fitting ideals of Selmer groups over finite subextensions in the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Especially, we present a proof of the "weak main conjecture" à la Mazur and Tate for elliptic curves with good (supersingular) reduction at an odd prime $p$. We also prove the "strong main conjecture" suggested by the second named author under the validity of the $\pm$-main conjecture and the vanishing of a certain error term. The key idea is the explicit comparison among "finite layer objects", "$\pm$-objects",…
We extend many results on Selmer groups for elliptic curves and modular forms to the non-ordinary setting. More precisely, we study the signed Selmer groups defined using the machinery of Wach modules over $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extensions. First, we provide a definition of residual and non-primitive Selmer groups at non-ordinary primes. This allows us to extend techniques developed by Greenberg (for $p$-ordinary elliptic curves) and Kim ($p$-supersingular elliptic curves) to show that if two $p$-non-ordinary modular forms are congruent to each other, then the Iwasawa invariants of their si…
For any number field K with a complex place, we present an infinite family of elliptic curves defined over K such that $dim \mathbb{F}_2 Sel_2(E^F/K) \ge dim \mathbb{F}_2 E^F(K)[2] + r_2$ for every quadratic twist E^F of every curve E in this family, where r_2 is the number of complex places of K. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture appearing in work of Mazur and Rubin.
In this article, we prove that the average rank of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, when ordered by height, is less than $1$ (in fact, less than $.885$). As a consequence of our methods, we also prove that at least four fifths of all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ have rank either 0 or 1; furthermore, at least one fifth of all elliptic curves in fact have rank 0. The primary ingredient in the proofs of these theorems is a determination of the average size of the $5$-Selmer group of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$; we prove that this average size is $6$. Another key ingredient is a new l…
We say that two elliptic curves E_1, E_2 over a number field K are n-Selmer companions for a positive integer n if for every quadratic character χof K, there is an isomorphism between the n-Selmer groups Sel_n(E_1^χ/K) and Sel_n(E_2^χ/K) of the quadratic twists E_1^χ, E_2^χ. We give sufficient conditions for two elliptic curves to be n-Selmer companions, and give a number of examples of non-isogenous pairs of companions.
We investigate fine Selmer groups for elliptic curves and for Galois representations over a number field. More specifically, we discuss Conjecture A, which states that the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve over the cyclotomic extension is a finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}_p$-module. The relationship between this conjecture and Iwasawa's classical $μ=0$ conjecture is clarified. We also present some partial results towards the question whether Conjecture A is invariant under isogenies.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $A$ be another elliptic curve over a real quadratic number field. We construct a $\mathbb{Q}$-motive of rank $8$, together with a distinguished class in the associated Bloch-Kato Selmer group, using Hirzebruch-Zagier cycles, that is, graphs of Hirzebruch-Zagier morphisms. We show that, under certain assumptions on $E$ and $A$, the non-vanishing of the central critical value of the (twisted) triple product $L$-function attached to $(E,A)$ implies that the dimension of the associated Bloch-Kato Selmer group of the motive is $0$; and the non-vani…
We explain a method for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 3-isogeny Selmer groups of an elliptic curve. This improves the upper bound on the rank of the elliptic curve coming from a descent by 3-isogeny, to that coming from a full 3-descent. One ingredient of our work is a new algorithm for solving cubic norm equations, that avoids the need for any S-unit computations. As an application, we show that the elliptic curves with torsion subgroup of order 3 and rank at least 13, found by Eroshkin, have rank exactly 13.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and $E$ an elliptic curve defined over a number field with good reduction at every prime of $F$ above $p$. In this short note, we compute the Euler characteristics of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension. The novelty of our result is that we allow the elliptic curve to have mixed reduction types for primes above $p$ and that we allow mixed signs in the definition of the signed Selmer groups.
