We show that if F is the rational numbers or a multiquadratic number field, p is 2,3, or 5, and K/F is a Galois extension of degree a power of p, then for elliptic curves E/Q ordered by height, the average dimension of the p-Selmer groups of E/K is bounded. In particular, this provides a bound for the average K-rank of elliptic curves E/Q for such K. Additionally, we give bounds for certain representation-theoretic invariants of Mordell--Weil groups over Galois extensions of such F.
The central result is: for each finite Galois extension K/F of number fields and prime number p, as E/Q varies, the difference in dimension between the Galois fixed space in the p-Selmer group of E/K and the p-Selmer group of E/F has bounded average.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field k and F a finite Galois extension of k. Let p be a prime number. Then under certain not-too-stringent conditions on A and F we investigate the explicit Galois structure of the p-primary Selmer group of A over F. We also use the results so obtained to derive new bounds on the growth of the Selmer rank of A over extensions of k.
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
In this paper, we study the fine Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We show that under appropriate congruence conditions, if the dual fine Selmer group of one is pseudo-null, so is the other. Our results also compare the $π$-primary submodules of the two dual fine Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the structure of Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension and the structure of the dual fine Selmer group over the said admissible $p$-adic Lie extension.
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
We compare the Pontryagin duals of fine Selmer groups of two congruent $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible pro-$p$, $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of number fields $K$. We prove that in several natural settings the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin duals are pseudo-isomorphic over the Iwasawa algebra; if the coranks of the fine Selmer groups are not equal, then we can still prove inequalities between the $μ$-invariants. In the special case of a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty/K$, we also compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups, even in situations …
We study the growth of the Galois invariants of the $p$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve in a degree $p$ Galois extension. We show that this growth is determined by certain local cohomology groups and determine necessary and sufficient conditions for these groups to be trivial. Under certain hypotheses this allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be growth in the full $p$-Selmer group in a degree $p$ Galois extension.
In this article, we study the pseudo-isomorphism class of the dual fine Selmer group $X$ attached to a $p$-adic Galois deformation whose deformation ring $Λ$ is isomorphic to the ring of formal power series. By using the "Kolyvagin system" arising from a given Euler system $c$, we shall construct ideals $C_i(c)$ of $Λ$, and prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ approximate the higher Fitting ideals of $X$ under suitable hypothesis. In particular, we shall prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ arising from the Euler system of Beilinson-Kato elements determine the pseudo-isomorphism classes of the dual fine S…
In this paper, we study the graph of homothety classes of stable free lattices in a two-dimensional representation over a local UFD. This generalizes a classical result of the case where the base ring is a discrete valuation ring due to Serre. As applications, we consider the case when the representation comes from a residually reducible Hida family and we study the control theorem of Selmer groups. These results enable us to know the precise statement of the main conjecture in residually reducible case as we will remark in section 4 and section 5.
We study irreducible odd mod $p$ Galois representations $\barρ \colon \mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$, for $F$ a totally real number field and $G$ a general reductive group. For $p \gg_{G, F} 0$, we show that any $\barρ$ that lifts locally, and at places above $p$ to de Rham and Hodge-Tate regular representations, has a geometric $p$-adic lift. We also prove non-geometric lifting results without any oddness assumption.
In this paper, we compare the structure of Selmer groups of certain classes of Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. Namely, we show that the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations have the same elementary representations when the two Galois representations in question are either Tate dual to each other or are congruent to each other. In the first situation, our result gives a partial answer to the question of Greenberg on whether the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations that are…
In this paper, we will study the pseudo-nullity of the fine Selmer group and its related question. Namely, we investigate certain situations, where one can deduce the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a general Galois module over a admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $F_{\infty}$ from the knowledge that pseudo-nullity of the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of $F_{\infty}$ at which every prime of $F_{\infty}$ above $p$ splits completely. In particular, this gives us a way to construct examples of the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a …
In this paper, we compare the Akashi series of the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations over a strongly admissible p-adic Lie extension. Namely, we show that whenever the two Galois representations in question are congruent to each other, the Akashi series of one is a unit if and only if the Akashi series of the other is also a unit. We will also obtain similar results for the Euler characteristics of the Selmer groups and the characteristic elements attached to the Selmer groups.
In this paper, we study the Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We will show that under appropriate congruence condition, if the dual Selmer group of one satisfies the $\M_H(G)$-property, so will the other. In the event that the $\M_H(G)$-property holds, and assuming certain further hypothesis on the decomposition of primes in the $p$-adic Lie extension, we compare the ranks of the $π$-free quotient of the two dual Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the characteristic elements attached to the Selmer groups. We also s…
The first part of the paper gives a new proof of self-duality for Selmer groups: if A is an abelian variety over a number field K, and F/K is a Galois extension with Galois group G, then the Q_pG-representation naturally associated to the p-infinity Selmer group of A/F is self-dual. The second part describes a method for obtaining information about parities of Selmer ranks from the local Tamagawa numbers of A in intermediate extensions of F/K.
In this paper we study when two congruent $l$-adic Galois representations have congruent Selmer groups. We obtain results for representations from cyclotomic characters, Hecke characters and adjoints of modular forms.
We prove the vanishing of the geometric Bloch-Kato Selmer group for the adjoint representation of a Galois representation associated to regular algebraic polarized cuspidal automorphic representations under an assumption on the residual image. Using this, we deduce that the localization and completion of a certain universal deformation ring for the residual representation at the characteristic zero point induced from the automorphic representation is formally smooth of the correct dimension. We do this by employing the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method together with Kisin's technique of analy…
We prove the finiteness of Selmer groups attached to lifts of certain 2-dimensional mod p representations of the absolute Galois group of Q. The mod p representation can be either even or odd. The lifts considered are the ones that were proven to exist by the seond named author.
We study the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer groups attached to a classical point in the cuspidal eigenvariety associated with $\mathrm{GSp}_{2g}$. Our strategy is based on the study of families of Galois representations on the eigenvariety, which is inspired by the book of J. Bellaiche and G. Chenevier.
The main conjecture of Iwasawa theory is a conjecture on the relation between a Selmer group and a conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function. This conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function is expected to satisfy a conjectural functional equation in a certain sense. In view of the main conjecture and this conjectural functional equation, one would expect to have certain algebraic relationship between the Selmer group attached to a Galois representation and the Selmer group attached to the Tate twist of the dual of the Galois representation. It is precisely a component of this algebraic relationship that this p…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $K/K_0$ be a quadratic extension of number fields. Denote by $K_\pm$ the maximal $\mathbb{Z}_p$-power extensions of $K$ that are Galois over $K_0$, with $K_+$ abelian over $K_0$ and $K_-$ dihedral over $K_0$. In this paper we show that for a Galois representation over $K_0$ satisfying certain hypotheses, if it has odd Selmer rank over $K$ then for one of $K_\pm$ its Selmer rank over $L$ is bounded below by $[L:K]$ for $L$ ranging over the finite subextensions of $K$ in $K_\pm$. Our method or proof generalizes a method of Mazur--Rubin, building upon results of N…
We obtain lower bounds for Selmer ranks of elliptic curves over dihedral extensions of number fields. Suppose $K/k$ is a quadratic extension of number fields, $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $k$, and $p$ is an odd prime. Let $F$ denote the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $K$ that is unramified at all primes where $E$ has bad reduction and that is Galois over $k$ with dihedral Galois group (i.e., the generator $c$ of $Gal(K/k)$ acts on $Gal(F/K)$ by -1). We prove (under mild hypotheses on $p$) that if the rank of the pro-$p$ Selmer group $S_p(E/K)$ is odd, then the rank of $S_p(E/L)$ is …
We study the Galois action on paths in the $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$-pro-unipotent étale fundamental groupoid of a hyperbolic curve $X$ over a $p$-adic field with $\ell\neq p$. We prove an Oda--Tamagawa-type criterion for the existence of a Galois-invariant path in terms of the reduction of $X$, as well as an anabelian reconstruction result determining the stable reduction type of $X$ in terms of its fundamental groupoid. We give an explicit combinatorial description of the non-abelian Kummer map of $X$ in arbitrary depth, and deduce consequences for the non-abelian Chabauty method for affine hyperbol…
We investigate fine Selmer groups for elliptic curves and for Galois representations over a number field. More specifically, we discuss Conjecture A, which states that the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve over the cyclotomic extension is a finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}_p$-module. The relationship between this conjecture and Iwasawa's classical $μ=0$ conjecture is clarified. We also present some partial results towards the question whether Conjecture A is invariant under isogenies.
Let $p$ be an odd prime, $N$ a square-free odd positive integer prime to $p$, $π$ a $p$-ordinary cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GSp}_4(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ of principal level $N$ and Iwahori level at $p$. Using a $p$-integral version of Rallis inner product formula and modularity theorems for $\mathrm{GSp}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{U}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$, we establish an identity between the $p$-part of the critical value at $1$ of the degree $5$ $L$-function of $π$ twisted by the non-trivial quadratic Dirichlet character $ξ$ associated to the exten…
We prove a level raising mod $\ell=2$ theorem for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. It generalizes theorems of Ribet and Diamond-Taylor and also explains different sign phenomena compared to odd $\ell$. We use it to study the 2-Selmer groups of modular abelian varieties with common mod 2 Galois representation. As an application, we show that the 2-Selmer rank can be arbitrary in level raising families.
We develop a theory of `non-abelian higher special elements' in the non-commutative exterior powers of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We explore their relation to the theory of organising matrices and thus to the Galois module structure of Selmer modules. In concrete applications, we relate our general theory to the formulation of refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type and to the Galois structure of Tate-Shafarevich and Selmer groups of abelian varieties.
We continue the investigation of the distribution of $\ell^{\infty}$-Selmer groups in degree $\ell$ twist families of Galois modules over number fields begun in the previous paper. Building off the work on higher Selmer groups in that part, we find conditions under which we can compute the distribution of the $\ell^{\infty}$-Selmer groups for a given degree $\ell$ twist family. Along the way, we show that the average rank in the quadratic twist family of any given abelian variety over a number field is bounded.
Let $K/F$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields and $σ$ be an absolutely irreducible, self-dual representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(K/F)$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and consider two elliptic curves $E_1, E_2$ with good, ordinary reduction at primes above $p$ and equivalent mod-$p$ Galois representations. In this article, we study the variation of the parity of the multiplicities of $σ$ in the representation space associated to the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E_i$ over $K$. We also compare the root numbers for the twist of $E_i/F$ by $σ$ and show that the $p$-parity conjecture holds for the t…
We study the variation of the dimension of the Bloch-Kato Selmer group of a p-adic Galois representation of a number field that varies in a refined family. We show that, if one restricts ourselves to representations that are, at every place dividing $p$, crystalline, non-critically refined, and with a fixed number of non-negative Hodge-Tate weights, then the dimension of the Selmer group varies essentially lower-semi-continuously. This allows to prove lower bounds for Selmer groups "by continuity", in particular to prove some predictions of the conjecture of Bloch-Kato for modular forms.
In this paper, we study the fine Selmer groups attached to a Galois module defined over a commutative complete Noetherian ring with finite residue field of characteristic p. Namely, we are interested in its properties upon taking residual representation and within field extensions. In particular, we will show that the variation of the fine Selmer group in a cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension is intimately related to the variation of the class groups in the cyclotomic tower. We also discuss some examples of pseudo-nullity of fine Selmer groups.
For a totally real field $F$, a finite extension $\mathbf{F}$ of $\mathbf{F}_p$ and a Galois character $χ: G_F \to \mathbf{F}^{\times}$ unramified away from a finite set of places $Σ\supset \{\mathfrak{p} \mid p\}$ consider the Bloch-Kato Selmer group $H:=H^1_Σ(F, χ^{-1})$. In an earlier paper of the authors it was proved that the number $d$ of isomorphism classes of (non-semisimple, reducible) residual representations $\overlineρ$ giving rise to lines in $H$ which are modular by some $ρ_f$ (also unramified outside $Σ$) satisfies $d \geq n:= \dim_{\mathbf{F}} H$. This was proved under the assu…
This article deals with the history of certain aspects of the Pell equation X$^2$ - D y$^2$ = 4. We briefly discuss explicit units, and then study the history of Legendre's equations ax$^2$ - b y$^2$ = 4 with ab=D.
We explain a method for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 3-isogeny Selmer groups of an elliptic curve. This improves the upper bound on the rank of the elliptic curve coming from a descent by 3-isogeny, to that coming from a full 3-descent. One ingredient of our work is a new algorithm for solving cubic norm equations, that avoids the need for any S-unit computations. As an application, we show that the elliptic curves with torsion subgroup of order 3 and rank at least 13, found by Eroshkin, have rank exactly 13.
Let p be a prime number and M a quadratic number field, M not equal to Q(\sqrt{p}) if p is congruent to 1 modulo 4. We will prove that for any positive integer d there exists a Galois extension F/Q with Galois group D_{2p} and an elliptic curve E/Q such that F contains M and the p-Selmer group of E/F has size at least p^d.
Let $p$ be a prime number, and let $K$ be a $p$-adic local field. We study a class of semistable $p$-adic Galois representations of $K$, which we call {\it triangulordinary} because it includes the ordinary ones yet allows non-étale behavior in the associated $(ϕ,Γ_K)$-modules over the Robba ring. Our main result provides a description of the Bloch--Kato local condition of such representations. We also propose a program, using variational techniques, that would give a definition of the Selmer group along the eigencurve of Coleman--Mazur, including notably its nonordinary locus.

In this article, we set up a strategy to prove one divisibility towards the main Iwasawa conjecture for the Selmer groups attached to the twisted adjoint modular Galois representations associated to Hida families. This conjecture asserts the equality of the p-adic L-function interpoling the critical values of the symmetric square of the modular forms in these families and the characteristic ideal of the associated Selmer group. The idea is to introduce a third characteristic ideal containing informations on the congruences between cuspidal Siegel modular forms of genus 2 and the Klingen type E…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global function field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$ and let $K/F$ be a $p$-adic Lie extension with Galois group $G$. We provide a formula for the Euler characteristic $χ(G,Sel_A(K)_p)$ of the $p$-part of the Selmer group of $A$ over $K$. In the special case $G=\mathbb{Z}_p^d$ and $A$ a constant ordinary variety, using Akashi series, we show how the Euler characteristic of the dual of $Sel_A(K)_p$ is related to special values of a $p$-adic $\mathcal{L}$-function.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $K$ above $p$. If $K_{\infty}/K$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension such that $E(K_{\infty})[p^{\infty}]$ is finite and $H^2(G_S(K_{\infty}), E[p^{\infty}])=0$, then we prove that the $Λ$-torsion subgroup of the Pontryagin dual of $\text{Sel}_{p^{\infty}}(E/K_{\infty})$ is pseudo-isomorphic to the Pontryagin dual of the fine Selmer group of $E$ over $K_{\infty}$. This is the Galois-cohomological analog of a flat-cohomological result of Wingberg.
