We deal with a discrete-time two-dimensional quasi-birth-and-death process (2d-QBD process for short) on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2\times S_0$, where $S_0$ is a finite set, and give a complete expression for the asymptotic decay function of the stationary tail probabilities in an arbitrary direction. The 2d-QBD process is a kind of random walk in the quarter plane with a background process. In our previous paper (Queueing Systems, vol. 102, pp. 227-267, 2022), we have obtained the asymptotic decay rate of the stationary tail probabilities in an arbitrary direction and clarified that if the asymptotic decay rate $ξ_{\boldsymbol{c}}$, where $\boldsymbol{c}$ is a direction vector in $\mathbb{N}^2$, is less than a certain value $θ_{\boldsymbol{c}}^{max}$, the sequence of the stationary tail probabilities in the direction $\boldsymbol{c}$ geometrically decays without power terms, asymptotically. In this paper, we give the function according to which the sequence asymptotically decays, including the case where $ξ_{\boldsymbol{c}}=θ_{\boldsymbol{c}}^{max}$. When $ξ_{\boldsymbol{c}}=θ_{\boldsymbol{c}}^{max}$, the function is given by an exponential function with power term $k^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ except for two boundary cases, where it is given by just an exponential function without power terms. This result coincides with the existing result for a random walk in the quarter plane without background processes, obtained by Malyshev (Siberian Math. J., vol. 12, ,pp. 109-118, 1973).
We consider a discrete-time two-dimensional quasi-birth-and-death process (2d-QBD process for short) $\{(\boldsymbol{X}_n,J_n)\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2\times S_0$, where $\boldsymbol{X}_n=(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})$ is the level state, $J_n$ the phase state (background state) and $S_0$ a finite set, and study asymptotic properties of the stationary tail distribution. The 2d-QBD process is an extension of usual one-dimensional QBD process. By using the matrix analytic method of the queueing theory and the complex analytic method, we obtain the asymptotic decay rate of the stationary tail distribution in an…
We consider a two dimensional skip-free reflecting random walk on a nonnegative integer quadrant. We are interested in the tail asymptotics of its stationary distribution, provided its existence is assumed. We derive exact tail asymptotics for the stationary probabilities on the coordinate axis. This refines the asymptotic results in the literature, and completely solves the tail asymptotic problem on the stationary marginal distributions in the coordinate and diagonal directions. For this, we use the so-called analytic function method in such a way that either generating functions or moment g…
Markov modulation is versatile in generalization for making a simple stochastic model which is often analytically tractable to be more flexible in application. In this spirit, we modulate a two dimensional reflecting skip-free random walk in such a way that its state transitions in the boundary faces and interior of a nonnegative integer quadrant are controlled by Markov chains. This Markov modulated model is referred to as a 2d-QBD process according to Ozaw (2013). We are interested in the tail asymptotics of its stationary distribution, which has been well studied when there is no Markov mod…
A discrete-time two-dimensional quasi-birth-and-death process (2d-QBD process), $\{\boldsymbol{Y}_n\}=\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n},J_n)\}$, is a two-dimensional skip-free random walk $\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2$ with a supplemental process $\{J_n\}$ on a finite set $S_0$. The supplemental process $\{J_n\}$ is called a phase process. The 2d-QBD process $\{\boldsymbol{Y}_n\}$ is a Markov chain in which the transition probabilities of the two-dimensional process $\{(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})\}$ vary according to the state of the phase process $\{J_n\}$. This modulation is assumed to be space homogene…
We consider a discrete-time two-dimensional process $\{(L_{1,n},L_{2,n})\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2$ with a supplemental process $\{J_n\}$ on a finite set, where individual processes $\{L_{1,n}\}$ and $\{L_{2,n}\}$ are both skip free. We assume that the joint process $\{Y_n\}=\{(L_{1,n},L_{2,n},J_n)\}$ is Markovian and that the transition probabilities of the two-dimensional process $\{(L_{1,n},L_{2,n})\}$ are modulated depending on the state of the background process $\{J_n\}$. This modulation is space homogeneous except for the boundaries of $\mathbb{Z}_+^2$. We call this process a discrete-time …
We are concerned with an $M/M$-type join the shortest queue ($M/M$-JSQ for short) with $k$ parallel queues for an arbitrary positive integer $k$, where the servers may be heterogeneous. We are interested in the tail asymptotic of the stationary distribution of this queueing model, provided the system is stable. We prove that this asymptotic for the minimum queue length is exactly geometric, and its decay rate is the $k$-th power of the traffic intensity of the corresponding $k$ server queues with a single waiting line. For this, we use two formulations, a quasi-birth-and-death (QBD for short) …
We consider a neighbourhood random walk on a quadrant, $\{(X_1(t),X_2(t),φ(t)):t\geq 0\}$, with state space \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{S}&=&\{(n,m,i):n,m=0,1,2,\ldots;i=1,2,\ldots,k(n,m)\}. \end{eqnarray*} Assuming start in state $(n,m,i)$, the process spends exponentially distributed amount of time in $(n,m,i)$ according to some parameter $λ_i^{(n,m)}$. Upon leaving state $(n,m,i)$ the process moves to some state $(n^{'},m^{'},j)$ with $j\in\{1,\ldots,k(n^{'},m^{'})\}$ and $n^{'}\in\{n-1,n,n+1\}$, $m^{'}\in\{m-1,m,m+1\}$, according to some probabilities $(p_{n;a}^{m;b})_{i,j}$ with $a,b\in\{+…
Many problems in computing, service, and manufacturing systems can be modeled via infinite repeating Markov chains with an infinite number of levels and a finite number of phases. Many such chains are quasi-birth-death processes (QBDs) with transitions that are skip-free in level, in that one can only transition between consecutive levels, and unidirectional in phase, in that one can only transition from lower-numbered phases to higher-numbered phases. We present a procedure, which we call Clearing Analysis on Phases (CAP), for determining the limiting probabilities of such Markov chains exact…
We obtain new upper tail probabilities of $m$-times integrated Brownian motions under the uniform norm and the $L^p$ norm. For the uniform norm, Talagrand's approach is used, while for the $L^p$ norm, Zolotare's approach together with suitable metric entropy and the associated small ball probabilities are used. This proposed method leads to an interesting and concrete connection between small ball probabilities and upper tail probabilities (large ball probabilities) for general Gaussian random variable in Banach spaces. As applications, explicit bounds are given for the largest eigenvalue of t…
In this paper, we study estimates on tail probabilities $\mathbb{P}(S_r \ge t)$ of several classes of subordinators under mild assumptions on the tail of its Lévy measure. As an application of that result, we obtain two-sided estimates for fundamental solutions of general homogeneous time fraction equations including those with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
This article studies asymptotic approximations of ruin probabilities of multivariate random walks with heavy-tailed increments. Under our assumptions, the distributions of the increments are closely connected to multivariate subexponentiality and admit dependence between components. Keywords: subexponential distribution, ruin probability, multivariate random walk
We show bounds on tail probabilities for quadratic forms in sub-gaussian non-necessarily independent random variables. Our main tool will be estimates of the Luxemburg norms of such forms. This will allow us to formulate the above-mentioned bounds. As an example we give estimates of the excess loss in fixed design linear regression in dependent observations.
We provide exact asymptotics for the tail probabilities $\mathbb{P} \{S_{n,r} > x\}$ as $x \to \infty$, for fix $n$, where $S_{n,r}$ is the $r$-trimmed partial sum of i.i.d. St. Petersburg random variables. In particular, we prove that although the St. Petersburg distribution is only O-subexponential, the subexponential property almost holds. We also determine the exact tail behavior of the $r$-trimmed limits.
Let $\{X_1, X_2, ... \}$ be a sequence of dependent heavy-tailed random variables with distributions $F_1, F_2,...$ on $(-\infty,\infty)$, and let $τ$ be a nonnegative integer-valued random variable independent of the sequence $\{X_k, k \ge 1\}$. In this framework, we study the asymptotic behavior of the tail probabilities of the quantities $X_{(n)} = \max_{1\le k \le n} X_k$, $S_n =\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$ and $S_{(n)}=\max_{1\le k\le n} S_k$ for $n>1$, and for those of their randomized versions $X_{(τ)}$, $S_τ$ and $S_{(τ)}$. We also consider applications of the results obtained to some commonly-us…
Let $\{ξ_n\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. In this paper we study the comparison for two upper tail probabilities $\mathbb{P}\{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a_n|ξ_n|^p\geq r\}$ and $\mathbb{P}\{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}b_n|ξ_n|^p\geq r\}$ as $r\rightarrow\infty$ with two different real series $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}.$ The first result is for Gaussian random variables $\{ξ_n\},$ and in this case these two probabilities are equivalent after suitable scaling. The second result is for more general random variables, thus a weaker form of equivalence (namely, logarithmic …
We consider Markovian multiserver retrial queues where a blocked customer has two opportunities for abandonment: at the moment of blocking or at the departure epoch from the orbit. In this queueing system, the number of customers in the system (servers and buffer) and that in the orbit form a level-dependent quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) process whose stationary distribution is expressed in terms of a sequence of rate matrices. Using a simple perturbation technique and a matrix analytic method, we derive Taylor series expansion for nonzero elements of the rate matrices with respect to the number…
In this paper, we provide a review on the kernel method, which is one of the options for characterizing so-called exact tail asymptotic properties in stationary probabilities of two-dimensional random walks, discrete or continuous (or mixed), in the quarter plane. Many two-dimensional queueing systems can be modelled via these types of random walks. Stationary probabilities are one of the most sought statistical quantities in queueing analysis. However, explicit expressions are available only for a very limited number of models. Therefore, tail asymptotic properties become more important, sinc…
Sequential Monte Carlo methods which involve sequential importance sampling and resampling are shown to provide a versatile approach to computing probabilities of rare events. By making use of martingale representations of the sequential Monte Carlo estimators, we show how resampling weights can be chosen to yield logarithmically efficient Monte Carlo estimates of large deviation probabilities for multidimensional Markov random walks.
In the study of large scale stochastic networks with resource management, differential equations and mean-field limits are two key techniques. Recent research shows that the expected fraction vector (that is, the tailed probability vector) plays a key role in setting up mean-field differential equations. To further apply the technique of tailed probability vector to deal with resource management of large scale stochastic networks, this paper discusses tailed probabilities in some basic queueing processes including QBD processes, Markov chains of GI/M/1 type and of M/G/1 type, and also provides…
Let $ξ_1, ξ_2, \dots$ be i.i.d. non-negative random variables whose tail varies regularly with index $-1$, let $S_n$ be the sum and $M_n$ the largest of the first $n$ values. We clarify for which sequences $x_n\to\infty$ we have $\mathbb P(S_n \ge x_n) \sim \mathbb P(M_n \ge x_n)$ as $n\to\infty$. Outside this regime, the typical size of $S_n$ conditioned on exceeding $x_n$ is not completely determined by the largest summand and we provide an appropriate correction term which involves the integrated tail of $ξ_1$.
Given a branching random walk $(Z_n)_{n\geq0}$ on $\mathbb{R}$, let $Z_n(A)$ be the number of particles located in interval $A$ at generation $n$. It is well known (e.g., \cite{biggins}) that under some mild conditions, $Z_n(\sqrt nA)/Z_n(\mathbb{R})$ converges a.s. to $ν(A)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, where $ν$ is the standard Gaussian measure. In this work, we investigate its large deviation probabilities under the condition that the step size or offspring law has heavy tail, i.e. the decay rate of $$\mathbb{P}(Z_n(\sqrt nA)/Z_n(\mathbb{R})>p)$$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, where $p\in(ν(A),1)$. O…
We obtain some optimal inequalities on tail probabilities for sums of independent bounded random variables. Our main result completes an upper bound on tail probabilities due to Talagrand by giving a one-term asymptotic expansion for large deviations. This result can also be regarded as sharp large deviations of types of Cramér and Bahadur-Ranga Rao.
In this paper we present various new inequalities for tail proabilities for distributions that are elements of the most improtant exponential families. These families include the Poisson distributions, the Gamma distributions, the binomial distributions, the negative binomial distributions and the inverse Gaussian distributions. All these exponential families have simple variance functions and the variance functions play an important role in the exposition. All the inequalities presented in this paper are formulated in terms of the signed log-likelihood. The inequalities are of a qualitative n…
We investigate the probability that an insurance portfolio gets ruined within a finite time period under the assumption that the r largest claims are (partly) reinsured. We show that for regularly varying claim sizes the probability of ruin after reinsurance is also regularly varying in terms of the initial capital, and derive an explicit asymptotic expression for the latter. We establish this result by leveraging recent developments on sample-path large deviations for heavy tails. Our results allow, on the asymptotic level, for an explicit comparison between two well-known large-claim reinsur…
Let $S_n$ be the sum of independent random variables with distribution $F$. Under the assumption that $-\log(1-F(x))$ is slowly varying, conditions for $$ \lim_{n\to\infty}\sup_{s\ge t_n}\left|{P[S_n>s]\over n(1-F(s))}-1\right| =0 $$ are given. These conditions extend and strengthen a series of previous results. Additionally, a connection with subexponential distributions is demonstrated. That is, $F$ is subexponential if and only if the condition above holds for some $t_n$ and $$ \lim_{t\to\infty}{1-F(t+x)\over 1-F(t)} = 1 \quad\text{for each real $x$.}$$
The task for a general and useful classification of the tail behaviors of probability distributions still has no satisfactory solution. Due to lack of information outside the range of the data the tails of the distribution should be described via many characteristics. Index of regular variation is a good characteristic, but it puts too many distributions with very different tail behavior in one and the same class. One can consider for example Pareto($α$), Fr$\acute{e}$chet($α$) and Hill-horror($α$) with one and the same fixed parameter $α> 0$. The main disadvantage of VaR, expectiles, and haza…
We consider the classical Cramér-Lundberg risk model with claim sizes that are mixtures of phase-type and subexponential variables. Exploiting a specific geometric compound representation, we propose control variate techniques to efficiently simulate the ruin probability in this situation. The resulting estimators perform well for both small and large initial capital. We quantify the variance reduction as well as the efficiency gain of our method over another fast standard technique based on the classical Pollaczek-Khinchine formula. We provide a numerical example to illustrate the performance…
For independent $X$ and $Y$ in the inequality $P(X\leq Y+μ)$, we give sharp lower bounds for unimodal distributions having finite variance, and sharp upper bounds assuming symmetric densities bounded by a finite constant. The lower bounds depend on a result of Dubins about extreme points and the upper bounds depend on a symmetric rearrangement theorem of F. Riesz. The inequality was motivated by medical imaging: find bounds on the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (ROC).
Two old conjectures from problem sections, one of which from SIAM Review, concern the question of finding distributions that maximize P(Sn <= t), where Sn is the sum of i.i.d. random variables X1, ..., Xn on the interval [0,1], satisfying E[X1]=m. In this paper a Lagrange multiplier technique is applied to this problem, yielding necessary conditions for distributions to be extremal, for arbitrary n. For n=2, a complete solution is derived from them: extremal distributions are discrete and have one of the following supports, depending on m and t: {0,t}, {t-1,1}, {t/2,1}, or {0,t,1}. These resul…
A random vector $X$ with representation $X=\sum_{j\geq0}A_jZ_j$ is considered. Here, $(Z_j)$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random vectors and $(A_j)$ is a sequence of random matrices, `predictable' with respect to the sequence $(Z_j)$. The distribution of $Z_1$ is assumed to be multivariate regular varying. Moment conditions on the matrices $(A_j)$ are determined under which the distribution of $X$ is regularly varying and, in fact, `inherits' its regular variation from that of the $(Z_j)$'s. We compute the associated limiting measure. Examples include linear process…
Let X_1,X_2,... be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, and put S_n=X_1+...+X_n. Under some conditions on the positive sequence tau_n and the positive increasing sequence a_n, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of sum_{n=1}^infty tau_n P(|S_n|>t a_n) for all t>0, generalizing Baum and Katz's (1965) generalization of the Hsu-Robbins-Erdos (1947, 1949) law of large numbers, also allowing us to characterize the convergence of the above series in the case where tau_n=1/n and a_n=(n log n)^{1/2} for n>1, thereby answering a question of…
Let $X_1,X_2,...$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, and put $S_n=X_1+...+X_n$. Under some conditions on the positive sequence $τ_n$ and the positive increasing sequence $a_n$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of $\sum_{n=1}^\infty τ_n P(|S_n|\ge εa_n)$ for all $ε>0$, generalizing Baum and Katz's (1965) generalization of the Hsu-Robbins-Erdos (1947, 1949) law of large numbers, also allowing us to characterize the convergence of the above series in the case where $τ_n=n^{-1}$ and $a_n=(n\log n)^{1/2}$ for $n\ge 2$, thereby a…
In this paper we study the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities for an insurance company that faces heavy-tailed claims, uses predictable investment strategies and makes investments in risky assets whose prices evolve according to quite general semimartingales. We show that the ruin problem corresponds to determining hitting probabilities for the solution to a randomly perturbed stochastic integral equation. We derive a large deviation result for the hitting probabilities that holds uniformly over a family of semimartingales and show that this result gives the asymptotic decay of…
The approach of Kleitman (1970) and Kanter (1976) to multivariate concentration function inequalities is generalized in order to obtain for deviation probabilities of sums of independent symmetric random variables a lower bound depending only on deviation probabilities of the terms of the sum. This bound is optimal up to discretization effects, improves on a result of Nagaev (2001), and complements the comparison theorems of Birnbaum (1948) and Pruss (1997). Birnbaum's theorem for unimodal random variables is extended to the lattice case.
We revisit a single-server retrial queue with two independent Poisson streams (corresponding to two types of customers) and two orbits. The size of each orbit is infinite. The exponential server (with a rate independent of the type of customers) can hold at most one customer at a time and there is no waiting room. Upon arrival, if a type $i$ customer $(i=1,2)$ finds a busy server, it will join the type $i$ orbit. After an exponential time with a constant (retrial) rate $μ_i$, an type $i$ customer attempts to get service. This model has been recently studied by Avrachenkov, Nain and Yechiali~\c…
We provide a new extension of Breiman's Theorem on computing tail probabilities of a product of random variables to a multivariate setting. In particular, we give a complete characterization of regular variation on cones in $[0,\infty)^d$ under random linear transformations. This allows us to compute probabilities of a variety of tail events, which classical multivariate regularly varying models would report to be asymptotically negligible. We illustrate our findings with applications to risk assessment in financial systems and reinsurance markets under a bipartite network structure.
We study tail behaviour of the distribution of the area under the positive excursion of a random walk which has negative drift and heavy-tailed increments. We determine the asymptotics for tail probabilities for the area.
Our work aims to study the tail behaviour of weighted sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} X_{i} \prod_{j=1}^{i}Y_{j}$, where $(X_{i}, Y_{i})$ are independent and identically distributed, with common joint distribution bivariate Sarmanov. Such quantities naturally arise in financial risk models. Each $X_{i}$ has a regularly varying tail. With sufficient conditions similar to those used by Denisov and Zwart (2007) imposed on these two sequences, and with certain suitably summable bounds similar to those proposed by Hazra and Maulik (2012), we explore the tail distribution of the random variabl…
In this paper we consider the extreme behavior of the extremal eigenvalues of white Wishart matrices, which plays an important role in multivariate analysis. In particular, we focus on the case when the dimension of the feature p is much larger than or comparable to the number of observations n, a common situation in modern data analysis. We provide asymptotic approximations and bounds for the tail probabilities of the extremal eigenvalues. Moreover, we construct efficient Monte Carlo simulation algorithms to compute the tail probabilities. Simulation results show that our method has the best …
We obtain decay rates of probabilities of tails of polynomials in several independent random variables with heavy tails and derive stable limit theorems for nonconventional sums of such polynomials
Let $M_n= \fsu X1n$ be a sum of independent random variables such that $ X_k\leq 1$, $\E X_k =0$ and $\E X_k^2=\s_k^2$ for all $k$. Hoeffding 1963, Theorem 3, proved that $$¶{M_n \geq nt}\leq H^n(t,p),\quad H(t,p)= \bgl(1+qt/p\bgr)^{p +qt} \bgl({1-t}\bgr)^{q -qt}$$ with $$q=\ffrac 1{1+\s^2},\quad p=1-q, \quad \s^2 =\ffrac {\s_1^2+...+\s_n^2}n,\quad 0<t<1.$$ Bentkus 2004 improved Hoeffding's inequalities using binomial tails as upper bounds. Let $\ga_k =\E X_k^3/\s_k^3$ and $ \vk_k= \E X_k^4/\s_k^4$ stand for the skewness and kurtosis of $X_k$. In this paper we prove (improved) counterparts of …
We study the behavior of the tail probabilities $P(V^2<r)$ as $r\to 0$, where $V^2$ is defined by the following double sum $$ V^2 =π^{-4}\,\sum\limits_{i,j\ge 1} \Big((i+b)\,(j + δ)\Big)^{-2}\,ξ_{ij}^2,$$ where $ \{ξ_{ij}\} $ are independent standard normal random variables, and $b$ and $δ$ are constants: $b>-1,\ δ>-1$.
We investigate the application of the Adaptive Multilevel Splitting algorithm for the estimation of tail probabilities of solutions of Stochastic Differential Equations evaluated at a given time, and of associated temporal averages. We introduce a new, very general and effective family of score functions which is designed for these problems. We illustrate its behavior on a series of numerical experiments. In particular, we demonstrate how it can be used to estimate large deviation rate functionals for the longtime limit of temporal averages.
We develop an efficient simulation algorithm for computing the tail probabilities of the infinite series $S = \sum_{n \geq 1} a_n X_n$ when random variables $X_n$ are heavy-tailed. As $S$ is the sum of infinitely many random variables, any simulation algorithm that stops after simulating only fixed, finitely many random variables is likely to introduce a bias. We overcome this challenge by rewriting the tail probability of interest as a sum of a random number of telescoping terms, and subsequently developing conditional Monte Carlo based low variance simulation estimators for each telescoping …
Let F be a distribution function with negative mean and regularly varying right tail. Under a mild smoothness condition we derive higher order asymptotic expansions for the tail distribution of the maxima of the random walk generated by F. An application to ruin probabilities is developed.
We investigate the upper tail probabilities of the all-time maximum of a stable Lévy process with a power negative drift. The asymptotic behaviour is shown to be exponential in the spectrally negative case and polynomial otherwise, with explicit exponents and constants. Analogous results are obtained, at a less precise level, for the fractionally integrated stable Lévy process. We also study the lower tail probabilities of the integrated stable Lévy process in the presence of a power positive drift.
While small ball, or lower tail, asymptotic for Gaussian measures generated by solutions of stochastic ordinary differential equations is relatively well understood, a lot less is known in the case of stochastic partial differential equations. The paper presents exact logarithmic asymptotics of the small ball probabilities in a scale of Sobolev spaces when the Gaussian measure is generated by the solution of a diagonalizable stochastic parabolic equation. Compared to the finite-dimensional case, new effects appear in a certain range of the Sobolev exponents.
Pickands' constants $H_α$ appear in various classical limit results about tail probabilities of suprema of Gaussian processes. It is an often quoted conjecture that perhaps $H_α = 1/Γ(1/α)$ for all $0 < α\leq 2$, but it is also frequently observed that this doesn't seem compatible with evidence coming from simulations. We prove the conjecture is false for small $α$, and in fact that $H_α \geq (1.1527)^{1/α}/Γ(1/α)$ for all sufficiently small $α$. The proof is a refinement of the "conditioning and comparison" approach to lower bounds for upper tail probabilities, developed in a previous paper o…
