We investigate the effects of quantum backreaction on the Schwarzschild geometry in the semiclassical approximation. The renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a scalar field is modelled via an order reduction of the analytical approximation derived by Anderson, Hiscock and Samuel (AHS). As the resulting AHS semiclassical Einstein equations are of fourth-derivative order in the metric, we follow a reduction of order prescription to shrink the space of solutions. Motivated by this prescription, we develop a method that allows to obtain a novel analytic approximation for the RSET that exhibits all the desired properties for a well-posed RSET: conservation, regularity, and correct estimation of vacuum-state contributions. We derive a set of semiclassical equations sourced by the order-reduced AHS-RSET in the Boulware state. We classify the self-consistent solutions to this set of field equations, discuss their main features and address how well they resemble the solutions of the higher-order semiclassical theory. Finally, we establish a comparison with previous results in the literature obtained through the Polyakov approximation for minimally coupled scalar fields.
We review a long-standing difficulty in some semiclassical models of vacuum and vacuum decay. Surprisingly enough these models, careless of their transparent formulation, are affected by, both, technical and conceptual issues. After proving some general results that are relevant for, both, the Euclidean and Lorentzian sectors of their dynamics, we briefly highlight their importance in connection with the issues discussed before, arguing that their solution might be interesting in our quest for quantum gravity.
We introduce a new picture of vacuum decay which, in contrast to existing semiclassical techniques, provides a real-time description and does not rely on classically-forbidden tunneling paths. Using lattice simulations, we observe vacuum decay via bubble formation by generating realizations of vacuum fluctuations and evolving with the classical equations of motion. The decay rate obtained from an ensemble of simulations is in excellent agreement with existing techniques. Future applications include bubble correlation functions, fast decay rates, and decay of non-vacuum states.
We investigate the effects of vacuum polarization on vacuum static spherically-symmetric spacetimes. We start from the Polyakov approximation to the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a minimally coupled massless scalar field. This RSET is not regular at $r=0$, so we define a regularized version of the Polyakov RSET. Using this Regularized RSET, and under the previous symmetry assumptions, we find all the solutions to the semiclassical field equations in vacuum. The resulting counterpart to the Schwarzschild classical geometry substitutes the presence of an event horizon by a wormhole…
In general, the Gibbons-Hawking temperature based on the Euclidean functional approach shows that de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum is globally thermal. In the exactly soluble semiclassical Jackiw-Teitelboim model, we investigate thermal property of de Sitter space by taking into account the quantum back reaction of the geometry. The proper temperature of de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum is found to vanish. In case of a certain quantum state breaking the de Sitter symmetry, de Sitter space can be made thermally exited; however, in this case the dilaton singularity cannot be …
Recently, a novel phenomenon is observed for vacuum decay to proceed via classically allowed dynamical evolution from initial configurations of false vacuum fluctuations. With the help of some occasionally developed large fluctuations in time derivative of a homogeneous scalar field that is initially sitting at the false vacuum, the flyover vacuum decay is proposed if the initial Gaussian profile of field velocity contains a spatial region where the field velocity is large enough to flyover the potential barrier. In this paper, we point out that, even if the initial profile of field velocity i…
The vacuum polarization of the quantized scalar field with non-conformal coupling $ξ$ on the long throat of a wormhole background is calculated. It is shown that the stress-energy tensor of vacuum fluctuations in considered spacetime is determined by the local geometry of spacetime only. The self-consistent solutions of the semiclassical Einstein field equations describing a long throat of a traversable wormhole are obtained.
We report the results concerning the influence of vacuum polarization due to quantum massive vector, scalar and spinor fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric charged black holes. The vacuum polarization from quantized fields produces a shift in the values of the quasinormal frequencies, and correspondingly the semiclassical system becomes a better oscillator with respect to the classical Reissner-Nordström black hole.
We present and develop several nonlinear energy conditions suitable for use in the semiclassical regime. In particular, we consider the recently formulated "flux energy condition" (FEC), and the novel "trace-of-square" (TOSEC) and "determinant" (DETEC) energy conditions. As we shall show, these nonlinear energy conditions behave much better than the classical linear energy conditions in the presence of semiclassical quantum effects. Moreover, whereas the quantum extensions of these nonlinear energy conditions seem to be quite widely satisfied as one enters the quantum realm, analogous quantum …
We compute the vacuum energy of three-dimensional asymptotically flat space based on a Chern-Simons formulation for the Poincare group. The equivalent action is nothing but the Einstein-Hilbert term in the bulk plus half of the Gibbons-Hawking term at the boundary. The derivation is based on the evaluation of the Noether charges in the vacuum. We obtain that the vacuum energy of this space has the same value as the one of the asymptotically flat limit of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space.
We discuss both classical and semiclassical properties of extremal black holes in theories where the dilaton and a modulus field are present. We find that the corresponding 2-dim geometry is asymptotically anti-de Sitter rather then asymptotically flat as in the purely dilatonic case. This fact has many important consequences, which we analyze at length, both for the classical behaviour and for the thermodynamical properties of the black hole. We also study the Hawking evaporation process in the semiclassical approximation. The calculations strongly indicates the emergence of a stable ground s…
In the context of the vacuum polarization effect, we consider the backreaction of the energy-momentum tensor of a charged scalar field on the background metric of a cosmic string carrying a magnetic flux $Φ$. Working within the semiclassical approach to the Einstein eqs. we find the first-order (in $\hbar$) metric associated to the magnetic flux cosmic string. We show that the contribution to the vacuum polarization effect coming from the Aharonov-Bohm interaction is larger than the one coming from the non-trivial gravitational interaction.
We present brief, to great extent pedagogical review on renormalization in curved space-time and of some recent results on the derivation and better understanding of quantum corrections to the action of gravity. The paper is mainly devoted to the semiclassical approach, but we also discuss its importance for quantum gravity and string theory.
In the present article we solve the Dirac-Pauli and Klein Gordon equations in an asymptotically uniformly accelerated frame when a constant magnetic field is present. We compute, via the Bogoliubov coefficients, the density of scalar and spin 1/2 particles created. We discuss the role played by the magnetic field and the thermal character of the spectrum.
We have previously shown that the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole of stellar or larger mass may be avoided in a semiclassical manner by using as a source of gravity the stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, with a minimum spherical radius a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length. In this note we estimate the nonlocal contribution to the total SET due to particle creation from vacuum. We show that this contribution is negligibly small as compared to vacuum polarization and does not affect the previously suggested scenario.
It has been proposed recently to consider in the framework of cosmology an extension of the semiclassical Einstein's equations in which the Einstein tensor is considered as a random function. This paradigm yields a hierarchy of equations between the $n$-point functions of the quantum, normal ordered, stress energy-tensor and those associated to the stochastic Einstein tensor. Assuming that the matter content is a conformally coupled massive scalar field on de Sitter spacetime, this framework has been applied to compute the power spectrum of the quantum fluctuations and to show that it is almos…
The semiclassical approximation takes into account the gravitational contribution of zero-point energies. We model this contribution via the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a massless scalar field, which we compute in a cutoff-regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. When the field is in the Boulware vacuum state (the natural vacuum for stellar geometries), the RSET works in favor of violating the Buchdahl compactness limit. We review the family of classical constant-density stellar solutions, paying particular attention to the notion of criticality -- the presence of off…
We present strong evidence that semiclassical gravity can give place to self-consistent ultracompact stars beyond the Buchdahl limit. We integrate the semiclassical equations of (spherically symmetric) stellar equilibrium for a constant-density classical fluid. The semiclassical contribution is modelled by a quantum massless scalar field in the only static vacuum state compatible with asymptotic flatness (Boulware vacuum). The Renormalized Stress-Energy Tensor (RSET) is firstly approximated by the analytic Polyakov approximation. This already reveals a crucial difference with respect to purely…
Static asymptotically Lifshitz wormholes and black holes in vacuum are shown to exist for a class of Lovelock theories in d=2n+1>7 dimensions, selected by requiring that all but one of their n maximally symmetric vacua are AdS of radius l and degenerate. The wormhole geometry is regular everywhere and connects two Lifshitz spacetimes with a nontrivial geometry at the boundary. The dynamical exponent z is determined by the quotient of the curvature radii of the maximally symmetric vacua according to n(z^2-1)+1=(l/L)^2, where L corresponds to the curvature radius of the nondegenerate vacuum. Lig…
We study the action of Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) area operators on the covariant phase space of classical solutions. It has been previously proposed that this action generates a transformation which, roughly speaking, boosts the entanglement wedge on one side of the HRT surface relative to the entanglement wedge on the other side. We give a sharp argument for a precise result of this form in a general theory of Einstein-Hilbert gravity minimally coupled to matter, taking appropriate care with asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) boundary conditions. The result agrees with direct computa…
We provide an exhaustive analysis of the complete set of solutions of the equations of stellar equilibrium under semiclassical effects. As classical matter we use a perfect fluid of constant density; as the semiclassical source we use the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in the Boulware vacuum (the only vacuum consistent with asymptotic flatness and staticity). For the RSET we use a regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. We present a complete catalogue of the semiclassical self-consistent solutions which incorporates regular as w…
In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.
General relativity predicts its own demise at singularities, but also appears to conveniently shield itself from the catastrophic consequences of such singularities, making them safe. For instance, if strong cosmic censorship were ultimately satisfied, spacetime singularities, although present, would not pose any practical problems to predictability. Here we argue that under semiclassical effects the situation should be rather different: the potential singularities which could appear in the theory will generically affect predictability and so one will be forced to analyse whether there is a wa…
We study the magnitude of semiclassical gravity effects near the formation of a black-hole horizon in spherically-symmetric spacetimes. As a probe for these effects we use a quantised massless scalar field. Specifically, we calculate two quantities derived from it: the renormalised stress-energy tensor (a measure of how the field vacuum state affects the spacetime) and the effective temperature function (a generalisation of Hawking temperature related to the energy flux of the field vacuum). The subject of our study are spacetimes which contain a spherical distribution of matter and an empty e…
Three different methods viz. i) a perturbative analysis of the Schrödinger equation ii) abstract differential geometric method and iii) a semiclassical reduction of the Wheeler-Dewitt equation, relating Pancharatnam phase to vacuum instability are discussed. An improved semiclassical reduction is also shown to yield the correct zeroth order semicalssical Einstein equations with backreaction. This constitutes an extension of our earlier discussions on the topic
We discuss the properties of the previously constructed model of a Schwarzschild black hole interior where the singularity is replaced by a regular bounce, ultimately leading to a white hole. The model is semiclassical in nature and uses as a source of gravity the effective stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, and a minimum spherical radius is a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length, so that the effects of quantum gravity should be still negligible. We estimate the other quantum contributions to the effective SET, caused by a nontri…
We introduce a semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equation as a consistent dynamical equation for a first order perturbative correction to semiclassical gravity. This equation includes the lowest order quantum stress-energy fluctuations of matter fields as a source of classical stochastic fluctuations of the gravitational field. The Einstein-Langevin equation is explicitly solved around one of the simplest solutions of semiclassical gravity: Minkowski spacetime with a conformal scalar field in its vacuum state. We compute the two-point correlation function of the linearized Einstein tensor. This …
We show that time-reflection symmetric, asymptotically flat, static vacuum data which admit a non-trivial conformal rescaling which leads again to such data must be axi-symmetric and admit a conformal Killing field. Moreover, it is shown that there exists a 3-parameter family of such data.
The energy-momentum vacuum average of a conformally coupled massless scalar field vibrating around a cosmic dislocation (a cosmic string with a dislocation along its axis) is taken as source of the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations. The solution up to first order in the Planck constant is derived. Motion of a test particle is then discussed, showing that under certain circumstances a helical-like dragging effect, with no classical analogue around the cosmic dislocation, is induced by back reaction.
Extending the results of an earlier article we give a complete description of the asymptotically flat, conformally non-flat, static vacuum data which admit non-trivial, asymptotically smooth conformal mappings onto other such data. These data form a 3-parameter family which decomposes into 1-parameter families of data which are conformal to each other. The data and the associated static vacuum solutions are given explicitly in terms of elliptic and, in a special case, elementary functions.
By an argument similar to that of Gibbons and Stewart (1984), we show that there are no weakly-asymptotically-simple, analytic vacuum or electrovac solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic in time.
We prove the uniqueness theorem for asymptotically flat static vacuum black hole solutions in higher dimensional space-times. We also construct infinitely many non-asymptotically flat regular static black holes on the same spacetime manifold with the same spherical topology.
In the first part of this paper, we show that the semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equation, introduced in the framework of a stochastic generalization of semiclassical gravity to describe the back reaction of matter stress-energy fluctuations, can be formally derived from a functional method based on the influence functional of Feynman and Vernon. In the second part, we derive a number of results for background solutions of semiclassical gravity consisting of stationary and conformally stationary spacetimes and scalar fields in thermal equilibrium states. For these cases, fluctuation-dissipati…
We elaborate the recently introduced asymptotically exact semiclassical quantum gravity derived from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation by finding a particular coherent state representation of a quantum scalar field in which the back-reaction of the scalar field Hamiltonian exactly gives rise to the classical one. In this coherent state representation classical spacetime emerges naturally from semiclassical quantum gravity.
The semiclassical Einstein equations are solved to first order in $ε= \hbar/M^2$ for the case of an extreme or nearly extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole perturbed by the vacuum stress-energy of quantized free fields. It is shown that, for realistic fields of spin 0, 1/2, or 1, any zero temperature black hole solution to the equations must have an event horizon at $r_h < |Q|$, with $Q$ the charge of the black hole. It is further shown that no black hole solutions with $r_h < |Q|$ can be obtained by solving the semiclassical Einstein equations perturbatively.
By an argument similar to that of Gibbons and Stewart, but in a different coordinate system and less restrictive gauge, we show that any weakly-asymptotically-simple, analytic vacuum or electrovacuum solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic in time are necessarily stationary.
The semiclassical Einstein equations are solved to first order in $ε= \hbar/M^2$ for the case of a Reissner-Nordström black hole perturbed by the vacuum stress-energy of quantized free fields. Massless and massive fields of spin 0, 1/2, and 1 are considered. We show that in all physically realistic cases, macroscopic zero temperature black hole solutions do not exist. Any static zero temperature semiclassical black hole solutions must then be microscopic and isolated in the space of solutions; they do not join smoothly onto the classical extreme Reissner-Nordstöm solution as $ε\to 0$.
We prove uniqueness theorems for asymptotically flat, stationary, extremal, vacuum black hole solutions, in four and five dimensions with one and two commuting rotational Killing fields respectively. As in the non-extremal case, these problems may be cast as boundary value problems on the two dimensional orbit space. We show that the orbit space for solutions with one extremal horizon is homeomorphic to an infinite strip, where the two boundaries correspond to the rotational axes, and the two asymptotic regions correspond to spatial infinity and the near-horizon geometry. In four dimensions th…
We show that static electro--vacuum black hole space--times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non--degenerate components of the event horizon do not exist. This is done by a careful study of the near-horizon geometry of degenerate horizons, which allows us to eliminate the last restriction of the static electro-vacuum no-hair theory.
We propose a definition of asymptotically plane wave spacetimes in vacuum gravity in terms of the asymptotic falloff of the metric, and discuss the relation to previously constructed exact solutions. We construct a well-behaved action principle for such spacetimes, using the formalism developed by Mann and Marolf. We show that this action is finite on-shell and that the variational principle is well-defined for solutions of vacuum gravity satisfying our asymptotically plane wave falloff conditions.
We employ the semiclassical approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the spatially flat de Sitter Universe to investigate the dynamics of a minimally coupled scalar field near the Planck scale. We find that, contrary to naive intuition, the effects of quantum gravitational fluctuations become negligible and the scalar field states asymptotically approach plane-waves at very early times. These states can then be used as initial conditions for the quantum states of matter to show that each mode essentially originated in the minimum energy vacuum. Although the full quantum dynamics cannot …
Semiclassical gravity is investigated in a large class of asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetimes including those containing static stars, black holes, and wormholes. Specifically the stress-energy tensors of massless free spin 0 and spin 1/2 fields are computed to leading order in the asymptotic regions of these spacetimes. This is done for spin 0 fields in Schwarzschild spacetime using a WKB approximation. It is done numerically for the spin 1/2 field in Schwarzschild, extreme Reissner-Nordstrom, and various wormhole spacetimes. And it is done by finding analytic soluti…
The semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equations which describe the dynamics of stochastic perturbations of the metric induced by quantum stress-energy fluctuations of matter fields in a given state are considered on the background of the ground state of semiclassical gravity, namely, Minkowski spacetime and a scalar field in its vacuum state. The relevant equations are explicitly derived for massless and massive fields arbitrarily coupled to the curvature. In doing so, some semiclassical results, such as the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor to linear order in the metric perturbation…
We consider the semiclassical Einstein equations (SEE) in the presence of a quantum scalar field with self-interaction $λϕ^4$. Working in the Hartree truncation of the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action, we compute the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field, which act as a source of the SEE. We obtain the renormalized SEE by implementing a consistent renormalization procedure. We apply our results to find self-consistent de Sitter solutions to the SEE in situations with or without spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$-symmetry.
Adapting Israel's proof of static black hole uniqueness, we show that the Schwarzschild spacetime is the only static vacuum asymptotically flat spacetime that possesses a suitably defined photon sphere.
In this paper, we continue our investigations of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein vacuum constraints. Our previous studies of the asymptotically flat setting provided strong evidence for unstable asymptotics which we were able to resolve by introducing a certain modification of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation. The primary focus of the present paper here is the asymptotically hyperboloidal setting. We provide evidence through a mixture of numerical and analytical methods that the asymptotics of the solutions of Rácz's parabolic-hyperbolic formulation is stable, an…
The phenomenon of quantum vacuum polarization in the presence of a gravitational field is well understood and is expected to have a physical reality, but studies of its back-reaction on the dynamics of spacetime are practically non-existent outside the specific context of homogeneous cosmologies. Building on previous results of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, in this letter we first derive the semiclassical equations of stellar equilibrium in the s-wave Polyakov approximation. It is highlighted that incorporating the polarization of the quantum vacuum leads to a generalization of th…
We present an axially symmetric, asymptotically flat empty space solution of the Einstein field equations containing a naked singularity. The spacetime is regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possess a true curvature singularity. The spacetime is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme and is locally isometric to the metrics of case IV in the Kinnersley classification of type D vacuum metrics. Additionally, the spacetime also shows the evolution of closed timelike curves (CTCs) from an initial hypersurface free from CTCs.
We construct non-trivial vacuum space-times with a global Scri. The construction proceeds by proving extension results across compact boundaries for initial data sets, adapting the gluing arguments of Corvino and Schoen. Another application of the extension results is existence of initial data which are exactly Schwarzschild both near infinity and near each of the connected component of the apparent horizon.
The stability of certain class of asymptotically AdS wormholes in vacuum against scalar field perturbations is analyzed. For a free massive scalar field, the stability of the perturbation is guaranteed provided the squared mass is bounded from below by a negative quantity. Depending on the base manifold of the AdS asymptotics, this lower bound could be more stringent than the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. An exact expression for the spectrum is found analytically. For a scalar field perturbation with a nonminimal coupling, slow fall-off asymptotic behavior is also allowed, provided the squared…
Recently, Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli obtained spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a particular class of Einstein--Lovelock gravity. We derive the propagator in an exact form for a conformal scalar field in the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime so as to study the quantum effects of the scalar fields. We treat the cases in odd dimensions in this paper. We calculate the vacuum expectation value of $\langleφ^2\rangle$ and show its dependence on the radial coordinate for the five-dimensional case as an example.
We prove non-existence of static, vacuum, appropriately regular, asymptotically flat black hole space-times with degenerate (not necessarily connected) components of the event horizon. This finishes the classification of static, vacuum, asymptotically flat domains of outer communication in an appropriate class of space-times, showing that the domains of outer communication of the Schwarzschild black holes exhaust the space of appropriately regular black hole exteriors.
The condition for the unitarity of a quantum field is investigated in semiclassical gravity from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. It is found that the quantum field preserves unitarity asymptotically in the Lorentzian universe, but does not preserve unitarity completely in the Euclidean universe. In particular we obtain a very simple matter field equation in the basis of the generalized invariant of the matter field Hamiltonian whose asymptotic solution is found explicitly.
We study the geometry of a general class of vacuum asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes near the conformal boundary. In particular, the spacetime is only assumed to have finite regularity, and it is allowed to have arbitrary boundary topology and geometry. For the main results, we derive limits at the conformal boundary of various geometric quantities, and we use these limits to construct partial Fefferman--Graham expansions from the boundary. The results of this article will be applied, in upcoming papers, toward proving symmetry extension and gravity--boundary correspondence theorems for…
