We present and develop several nonlinear energy conditions suitable for use in the semiclassical regime. In particular, we consider the recently formulated "flux energy condition" (FEC), and the novel "trace-of-square" (TOSEC) and "determinant" (DETEC) energy conditions. As we shall show, these nonlinear energy conditions behave much better than the classical linear energy conditions in the presence of semiclassical quantum effects. Moreover, whereas the quantum extensions of these nonlinear energy conditions seem to be quite widely satisfied as one enters the quantum realm, analogous quantum extensions are generally not useful for the linear classical energy conditions.
We review a long-standing difficulty in some semiclassical models of vacuum and vacuum decay. Surprisingly enough these models, careless of their transparent formulation, are affected by, both, technical and conceptual issues. After proving some general results that are relevant for, both, the Euclidean and Lorentzian sectors of their dynamics, we briefly highlight their importance in connection with the issues discussed before, arguing that their solution might be interesting in our quest for quantum gravity.
We introduce a new picture of vacuum decay which, in contrast to existing semiclassical techniques, provides a real-time description and does not rely on classically-forbidden tunneling paths. Using lattice simulations, we observe vacuum decay via bubble formation by generating realizations of vacuum fluctuations and evolving with the classical equations of motion. The decay rate obtained from an ensemble of simulations is in excellent agreement with existing techniques. Future applications include bubble correlation functions, fast decay rates, and decay of non-vacuum states.
Recently, a novel phenomenon is observed for vacuum decay to proceed via classically allowed dynamical evolution from initial configurations of false vacuum fluctuations. With the help of some occasionally developed large fluctuations in time derivative of a homogeneous scalar field that is initially sitting at the false vacuum, the flyover vacuum decay is proposed if the initial Gaussian profile of field velocity contains a spatial region where the field velocity is large enough to flyover the potential barrier. In this paper, we point out that, even if the initial profile of field velocity i…
We investigate the effects of vacuum polarization on vacuum static spherically-symmetric spacetimes. We start from the Polyakov approximation to the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a minimally coupled massless scalar field. This RSET is not regular at $r=0$, so we define a regularized version of the Polyakov RSET. Using this Regularized RSET, and under the previous symmetry assumptions, we find all the solutions to the semiclassical field equations in vacuum. The resulting counterpart to the Schwarzschild classical geometry substitutes the presence of an event horizon by a wormhole…
In general, the Gibbons-Hawking temperature based on the Euclidean functional approach shows that de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum is globally thermal. In the exactly soluble semiclassical Jackiw-Teitelboim model, we investigate thermal property of de Sitter space by taking into account the quantum back reaction of the geometry. The proper temperature of de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum is found to vanish. In case of a certain quantum state breaking the de Sitter symmetry, de Sitter space can be made thermally exited; however, in this case the dilaton singularity cannot be …
The vacuum polarization of the quantized scalar field with non-conformal coupling $ξ$ on the long throat of a wormhole background is calculated. It is shown that the stress-energy tensor of vacuum fluctuations in considered spacetime is determined by the local geometry of spacetime only. The self-consistent solutions of the semiclassical Einstein field equations describing a long throat of a traversable wormhole are obtained.
We report the results concerning the influence of vacuum polarization due to quantum massive vector, scalar and spinor fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric charged black holes. The vacuum polarization from quantized fields produces a shift in the values of the quasinormal frequencies, and correspondingly the semiclassical system becomes a better oscillator with respect to the classical Reissner-Nordström black hole.
We present brief, to great extent pedagogical review on renormalization in curved space-time and of some recent results on the derivation and better understanding of quantum corrections to the action of gravity. The paper is mainly devoted to the semiclassical approach, but we also discuss its importance for quantum gravity and string theory.
In the context of the vacuum polarization effect, we consider the backreaction of the energy-momentum tensor of a charged scalar field on the background metric of a cosmic string carrying a magnetic flux $Φ$. Working within the semiclassical approach to the Einstein eqs. we find the first-order (in $\hbar$) metric associated to the magnetic flux cosmic string. We show that the contribution to the vacuum polarization effect coming from the Aharonov-Bohm interaction is larger than the one coming from the non-trivial gravitational interaction.
We have previously shown that the singularity in a Schwarzschild black hole of stellar or larger mass may be avoided in a semiclassical manner by using as a source of gravity the stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, with a minimum spherical radius a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length. In this note we estimate the nonlocal contribution to the total SET due to particle creation from vacuum. We show that this contribution is negligibly small as compared to vacuum polarization and does not affect the previously suggested scenario.
General relativity predicts its own demise at singularities, but also appears to conveniently shield itself from the catastrophic consequences of such singularities, making them safe. For instance, if strong cosmic censorship were ultimately satisfied, spacetime singularities, although present, would not pose any practical problems to predictability. Here we argue that under semiclassical effects the situation should be rather different: the potential singularities which could appear in the theory will generically affect predictability and so one will be forced to analyse whether there is a wa…
The classical energy conditions are known to not be fundamental physics -- they are typically violated by semiclassical quantum effects. Consequently, some effort has gone into finding possible semiclassical replacements for the classical energy conditions -- the most well developed being the Ford-Roman quantum inequalities. In the current article we shall instead develop classical and quantum versions of a "flux energy condition" (FEC and QFEC) based on the notion of constraining the possible fluxes measured by timelike observers. The naive classical FEC will be seen to be satisfied in some s…
Three different methods viz. i) a perturbative analysis of the Schrödinger equation ii) abstract differential geometric method and iii) a semiclassical reduction of the Wheeler-Dewitt equation, relating Pancharatnam phase to vacuum instability are discussed. An improved semiclassical reduction is also shown to yield the correct zeroth order semicalssical Einstein equations with backreaction. This constitutes an extension of our earlier discussions on the topic
We discuss the properties of the previously constructed model of a Schwarzschild black hole interior where the singularity is replaced by a regular bounce, ultimately leading to a white hole. The model is semiclassical in nature and uses as a source of gravity the effective stress-energy tensor (SET) corresponding to vacuum polarization of quantum fields, and a minimum spherical radius is a few orders of magnitude larger than the Planck length, so that the effects of quantum gravity should be still negligible. We estimate the other quantum contributions to the effective SET, caused by a nontri…
The semiclassical approximation takes into account the gravitational contribution of zero-point energies. We model this contribution via the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a massless scalar field, which we compute in a cutoff-regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. When the field is in the Boulware vacuum state (the natural vacuum for stellar geometries), the RSET works in favor of violating the Buchdahl compactness limit. We review the family of classical constant-density stellar solutions, paying particular attention to the notion of criticality -- the presence of off…
We present strong evidence that semiclassical gravity can give place to self-consistent ultracompact stars beyond the Buchdahl limit. We integrate the semiclassical equations of (spherically symmetric) stellar equilibrium for a constant-density classical fluid. The semiclassical contribution is modelled by a quantum massless scalar field in the only static vacuum state compatible with asymptotic flatness (Boulware vacuum). The Renormalized Stress-Energy Tensor (RSET) is firstly approximated by the analytic Polyakov approximation. This already reveals a crucial difference with respect to purely…
We provide an exhaustive analysis of the complete set of solutions of the equations of stellar equilibrium under semiclassical effects. As classical matter we use a perfect fluid of constant density; as the semiclassical source we use the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in the Boulware vacuum (the only vacuum consistent with asymptotic flatness and staticity). For the RSET we use a regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. We present a complete catalogue of the semiclassical self-consistent solutions which incorporates regular as w…
We study the magnitude of semiclassical gravity effects near the formation of a black-hole horizon in spherically-symmetric spacetimes. As a probe for these effects we use a quantised massless scalar field. Specifically, we calculate two quantities derived from it: the renormalised stress-energy tensor (a measure of how the field vacuum state affects the spacetime) and the effective temperature function (a generalisation of Hawking temperature related to the energy flux of the field vacuum). The subject of our study are spacetimes which contain a spherical distribution of matter and an empty e…
The energy-momentum vacuum average of a conformally coupled massless scalar field vibrating around a cosmic dislocation (a cosmic string with a dislocation along its axis) is taken as source of the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations. The solution up to first order in the Planck constant is derived. Motion of a test particle is then discussed, showing that under certain circumstances a helical-like dragging effect, with no classical analogue around the cosmic dislocation, is induced by back reaction.
In the first part of this paper, we show that the semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equation, introduced in the framework of a stochastic generalization of semiclassical gravity to describe the back reaction of matter stress-energy fluctuations, can be formally derived from a functional method based on the influence functional of Feynman and Vernon. In the second part, we derive a number of results for background solutions of semiclassical gravity consisting of stationary and conformally stationary spacetimes and scalar fields in thermal equilibrium states. For these cases, fluctuation-dissipati…
The phenomenon of quantum vacuum polarization in the presence of a gravitational field is well understood and is expected to have a physical reality, but studies of its back-reaction on the dynamics of spacetime are practically non-existent outside the specific context of homogeneous cosmologies. Building on previous results of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, in this letter we first derive the semiclassical equations of stellar equilibrium in the s-wave Polyakov approximation. It is highlighted that incorporating the polarization of the quantum vacuum leads to a generalization of th…
We analyse the quantum corrected geometry and radiation in the scattering of extremal black holes by low-energy neutral matter. We point out the fact that the correlators of local observables inside the horizon are the same as those of the vacuum. Outside the horizon the correlators at late times are much bigger than those of the (thermal) case obtained neglecting the backreaction. This suggests that the corrected Hawking radiation could be compatible with unitarity.
The stress-energy tensor of a free quantized scalar field is calculated in the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime in the zero temperature vacuum state. The stress-energy appears to be regular on the event horizon, contrary to the suggestion provided by two-dimensional calculations. An analytic calculation on the event horizon for a thermal state shows that if the temperature is nonzero then the stress-energy diverges strongly there.
Quantum fields in compact stars can be amplified due to a semiclassical instability. This generic feature of scalar fields coupled to curvature may affect the birth and the equilibrium structure of relativistic stars. We point out that the semiclassical instability has a classical counterpart, which occurs exactly in the same region of the parameter space. For negative values of the coupling parameter the instability is equivalent to the well-known "spontaneous scalarization" effect: the plausible end-state of the instability is a static, asymptotically flat equilibrium configuration with nonz…
Using coherent and squeezed state formalisms of quantum optics for a minimally coupled non-classical inflaton in the FRW mertic is studied, in semiclassical theory of gravity. The leading order solution for the semiclassical Einstein equations in the coherent, squeezed and squeezed vacuum states are obtained perturbatively and are exhibit powerlaw expansion behaviour. The validity of the semiclassical theory is examined in the squeezed vacuum state in the oscillatory phase of the inflaton. The semiclassical theory in the oscillatory phase of the non-classical inflaton holds only if the associa…
We apply the open systems concept and the influence functional formalism introduced in Paper I to establish a stochastic theory of relativistic moving spinless particles in a quantum scalar field. The stochastic regime resting between the quantum and semi-classical captures the statistical mechanical attributes of the full theory. Applying the particle-centric world-line quantization formulation to the quantum field theory of scalar QED we derive a time-dependent (scalar) Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac (ALD) equation and show that it is the correct semiclassical limit for nonlinear particle-field syste…
A black hole, surrounded by a reflecting shell, acts as an effective star-like object with respect to the outer region that leads to vacuum polarization outside, where the quantum fields are in the Boulware state. We find the quantum correction to the Hawking temperature, taking into account this circumstance. It is proportional to the integral of the trace of the total quantum stress-energy tensor over the whole space from the horizon to infinity. For the shell, sufficiently close to the horizon, the leading term comes from the boundary contribution of the Boulware state.
We employ the semiclassical approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the spatially flat de Sitter Universe to investigate the dynamics of a minimally coupled scalar field near the Planck scale. We find that, contrary to naive intuition, the effects of quantum gravitational fluctuations become negligible and the scalar field states asymptotically approach plane-waves at very early times. These states can then be used as initial conditions for the quantum states of matter to show that each mode essentially originated in the minimum energy vacuum. Although the full quantum dynamics cannot …
The energy conditions of classical Einstein gravity fail once quantum effects are introduced. These quantum violations of the energy conditions are not subtle high-energy Planck scale effects. Rather the quantum violations of the energy conditions already occur in semiclassical quantum gravity and are first-order O(\hbar) effects. Quantum violations of the energy conditions are widespread, albeit small.
The possibility of the cosmic string creation by the vacuum fluctuations of quantum fields in the self-consistent semiclassical theory of gravity is discussed. We use the approximate method for obtaining vacuum expectation value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of conformally invariant quantum fields in static cylindrically symmetric spacetimes. We have obtained the particular solutions of Einstein equations for the different boundary conditions at the cylinder symmetry axis.
This dissertation presents a semiclassical analysis of conical topology change in $1+1$ spacetime dimensions wherein, to lowest order, the ambient spacetime is classical and fixed while the scalar field coupled to it is quantized. The vacuum expectation value of the scalar field stress-energy tensor is calculated via two different approaches. The first of these involves the explicit determination of the so called Sorkin-Johnston state on the cone and an original regularization scheme, while the latter employs the conformal vacuum and the more conventional point-splitting renormalization. It is…
We find a self-consistent pp-gravitational shock wave solution to the semiclassical Einstein equations resulting from the $1/N$ approach to the effective action. We model the renormalized matter stress-energy-momentum tensor by $N$ massless scalar fields in the Minkowski vacuum plus a classical particle. We show that quantum effects generate a milder singularity at the position of the particle than the classical solution, but the singularity does not disappear. At large distances from the particle, the quantum correction decreases slowly, as $1/ρ^2$ ($ρ$ being the distance to the particle in t…
The necessary and sufficient conditions for the exactness of the semiclassical approximation for the solution of the Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon equations are obtained. It is shown that the existence of an exact semiclassical solution of the Schrödinger equation determines both the semiclassical wave function and the interaction potential uniquely up to the choice of the boundary conditions. This result also holds for the Klein-Gordon equation. Its implications for the solution of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the FRW scalar field minisuperspace models are discussed. In particular, exact se…
de Sitter spacetime and Bunch-Davies vacuum are a solution to the semiclassical Einstein-Schroedinger equations describing the evolution of spacetime geometry and a massive scalar quantum field with arbitrary coupling to curvature. The stability of this solution is proven by calculating the renormalized energy momentum tensor expectation value for small spatially homogeneous deviations from the de Sitter - Bunch-Davies system and solving the linearized backreaction problem. A renormalization scheme is developed. All momentum integrations are carried out analytically. The general solution is gi…
A spatially flat Robertson-Walker spacetime driven by a cosmological constant is non-conformally coupled to a massless scalar field. The equations of semiclassical gravity are explicitly solved for this case, and a self-consistent de Sitter solution associated with the Bunch-Davies vacuum state is found (the effect of the quantum field is to shift slightly the effective cosmological constant). Furthermore, it is shown that the corrected de Sitter spacetime is stable under spatially-isotropic perturbations of the metric and the quantum state. These results are independent of the free renormaliz…
It is well-known that some physical effects may arise in the spacetime of a straigth cosmic string due to its global conic properties. Among these effects, the vacuum polarization effect has been extensively studied in the litterature. In papers of reference [4] a more general situation has been considered in which the cosmic string carries a magnetic flux $Φ$ and interacts with a charged scalar field. In this case, the vacuum polarization arises both via non-trivial gravitational interaction (i.e, the conical structure) and via Aharonov-Bohm interaction. In papers [4] the non vanishing VEV of…
The expected stress-energy tensor <T_{ab}> of quantum fields generically violates the local positive energy conditions of general relativity. However, <T_{ab}> may satisfy some nonlocal conditions such as the averaged null energy condition (ANEC), which would rule out traversable wormholes. Although ANEC holds in Minkowski spacetime, it can be violated in curved spacetimes if one is allowed to choose the spacetime and quantum state arbitrarily, without imposition of the semiclassical Einstein equation G_{ab} = 8 π<T_{ab}>. In this paper we investigate whether ANEC holds for solutions to this e…
In recent past, W.A.Hiscock [ Class.Quan.Grav. (1990) 7,6235 ] studied the semi classical gravitational effects around global monopole. He obtained the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of an arbitrary collection of conformal mass less free quantum fields (scalar, spinor and vectors) in the space time of a global monopole. With this stress-energy tensor, we study the semi classical gravitational effects of a global monopole in the context of Brans-Dicke theory of gravity.
Loop quantization of diagonalized Bianchi class A models, leads to a partial difference equation as the Hamiltonian constraint at the quantum level. A criterion for testing a viable semiclassical limit has been formulated in terms of existence of the so-called pre-classical solutions. We demonstrate the existence of pre-classical solutions of the quantum equation for the vacuum Bianchi I model. All these solutions avoid the classical singularity at vanishing volume.
We discuss the limits of validity of the semiclassical theory of gravity in which a classical metric is coupled to the expectation value of the stress tensor. It is argued that this theory is a good approximation only when the fluctuations in the stress tensor are small. We calculate a dimensionless measure of these fluctuations for a scalar field on a flat background in particular cases, including squeezed states and the Casimir vacuum state. It is found that the fluctuations are small for states which are close to a coherent state, which describes classical behavior, but tend to be large oth…
Motivated by the quest for black holes in AdS braneworlds, and in particular by the holographic conjecture relating 5D classical bulk solutions with 4D quantum corrected ones, we numerically solve the semiclassical Einstein equations (backreaction equations) with matter fields in the (zero temperature) Boulware vacuum state. In the absence of an exact analytical expression for <T_(mu nu)> in four dimensions we work within the s-wave approximation. Our results show that the quantum corrected solution is very similar to Schwarzschild till very close to the horizon, but then a bouncing surface fo…
The classic singularity theorems of General Relativity rely on energy conditions that can be violated in semiclassical gravity. Here, we provide motivation for an energy condition obeyed by semiclassical gravity: the smeared null energy condition (SNEC), a proposed bound on the weighted average of the null energy along a finite portion of a null geodesic. We then prove a semiclassical singularity theorem using SNEC as an assumption. This theorem extends the Penrose theorem to semiclassical gravity. We also apply our bound to evaporating black holes and the traversable wormhole of Maldacena-Mil…
We calculate, using our recently proposed semiclassical framework, the quantum state of the Hawking pairs that are produced during the evaporation of a black hole (BH). Our framework adheres to the standard rules of quantum mechanics and incorporates the quantum fluctuations of the collapsing shell spacetime in Hawking's original calculation, while accounting for back-reaction effects. We argue that the negative-energy Hawking modes need to be regularly integrated out; and so these are effectively subsumed by the BH and, as a result, the number of coherent negative-energy modes $N_{coh}$ at an…
Transition from quantum to semiclassical behaviour and loss of quantum coherence for inhomogeneous perturbations generated from a non-vacuum initial state in the early Universe is considered in the Heisenberg and the Schrödinger representations, as well as using the Wigner function. We show explicitly that these three approaches lead to the same prediction in the limit of large squeezing (i.e. when the squeezing parameter $|r_k|\to \infty$): each two-modes quantum state (k, -k) of these perturbations is equivalent to a classical perturbation that has a stochastic amplitude, obeying a non-gauss…
The in-in effective action formalism is used to derive the semiclassical correction to Einstein's equations due to a massless scalar quantum field conformally coupled to small gravitational perturbations in spatially flat cosmological models. The vacuum expectation value of the stress tensor of the quantum field is directly derived from the renormalized in-in effective action. The usual in-out effective action is also discussed and it is used to compute the probability of particle creation. As one application, the stress tensor of a scalar field around a static cosmic string is derived and the…
From calculations of the variance of fluctuations and of the mean of the energy density of a massless scalar field in the Minkowski vacuum as a function of an intrinsic scale defined by the world function between two nearby points (as used in point separation regularization) we show that, contrary to prior claims, the ratio of variance to mean-squared being of the order unity does not imply a failure of semiclassical gravity. It is more a consequence of the quantum nature of the state of matter field than any inadequacy of the theory of spacetime with quantum matter as source.
