Virtual element methods (VEMs) without extrinsic stabilization in arbitrary degree of polynomial are developed for second order elliptic problems, including a nonconforming VEM and a conforming VEM in arbitrary dimension. The key is to construct local $H(\textrm{div})$-conforming macro finite element spaces such that the associated $L^2$ projection of the gradient of virtual element functions is computable, and the $L^2$ projector has a uniform lower bound on the gradient of virtual element function spaces in $L^2$ norm. Optimal error estimates are derived for these VEMs. Numerical experiments are provided to test the VEMs without extrinsic stabilization.
In this paper, we introduce a new Virtual Element Method (VEM) not requiring any stabilization term based on the usual enhanced first-order VEM space. The new method relies on a modified formulation of the discrete diffusion operator that ensures stability preserving all the properties of the differential operator.
We present the construction and application of a first order stabilization-free virtual element method to problems in plane elasticity. Well-posedness and error estimates of the discrete problem are established. The method is assessed on a series of well-known benchmark problems from linear elasticity and numerical results are presented that affirm the optimal convergence rate of the virtual element method in the $L^2$ norm and the energy seminorm.
In this letter we compare the behaviour of standard Virtual Element Methods (VEM) and stabilization free Enlarged Enhancement Virtual Element Methods (E$^2$VEM) with the focus on some elliptic test problems whose solution and diffusivity tensor are characterized by anisotropies. Results show that the possibility to avoid an arbitrary stabilizing part, offered by E$^2$VEM methods, can reduce the magnitude of the error on general polygonal meshes and help convergence.

We present a higher order stabilization-free virtual element method applied to plane elasticity problems. We utilize a serendipity approach to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom from the corresponding high-order approximations. The well-posedness of the problem is numerically studied via an eigenanalysis. The method is then applied to several benchmark problems from linear elasticity and we show that the method delivers optimal convergence rates in $L^2$ norm and energy seminorm that match theoretical estimates as well as the convergence rates from higher order virtual element metho…
We address the issue of designing robust stabilization terms for the nonconforming virtual element method. To this end, we transfer the problem of defining the stabilizing bilinear form from the elemental nonconforming virtual element space, whose functions are not known in closed form, to the dual space spanned by the known functionals providing the degrees of freedom. By this approach, we manage to construct different bilinear forms yielding optimal or quasi-optimal stability bounds and error estimates, under weaker assumptions on the tessellation than the ones usually considered in this fra…

The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m>n$ and $k\geq m$ are constructed in a universal way. A generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product with $m>n$ is derived, which is essential to devise the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements. By means of the local $H^m$ projection and a stabilization term using only the boundary degrees of freedom, the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are proposed to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. The norm equivalence of the stabilization on the kerne…
We present a survey of the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method for the Laplace and Helmholtz equations. For the latter, we present a new abstract analysis, based on weaker assumptions on the stabilization, and numerical results on the dispersion analysis, including comparison with the plane wave discontinuous Galerkin method.
We propose a Discontinuous Galerkin method for the Poisson equation on polygonal tessellations in two dimensions, stabilized by penalizing, locally in each element $K$, a residual term involving the fluxes, measured in the norm of the dual of $H^1(K)$. The scalar product corresponding to such a norm is numerically realized via the introduction of a (minimal) auxiliary space inspired by the Virtual Element Method. Stability and optimal error estimates in the broken $H^1$ norm are proven under a weak shape regularity assumption allowing the presence of very small edges. The results of numerical …
In this paper we analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional elasticity spectral problem allowing small edges. Under this approach, and with the aid of the theory of compact operators, we prove convergence of the proposed VEM and error estimates, where the influence of the Lamé constants is presented. We present a series of numerical tests to assess the performance of the method where we analyze the effects of the Poisson ratio on the computation of the order of convergence, together with the effects of the stabilization term on the arising of spurious eigenvalues.
A unified construction of the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ is developed on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m\leq n$ and $k\geq m$. As a vital tool in the construction, a generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product is derived. The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are then used to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. After establishing a bound on the jump related to the weak continuity, the optimal error estimate of the canonical interpolation, and the norm equivalence of the stabilization term, the optimal erro…
Piecewise divergence-free nonconforming virtual elements are designed for Stokes problem in any dimensions. After introducing a local energy projector based on the Stokes problem and the stabilization, a divergence-free nonconforming virtual element method is proposed for Stokes problem. A detailed and rigorous error analysis is presented for the discrete method. An important property in the analysis is that the local energy projector commutes with the divergence operator. With the help of a divergence-free interpolation operator onto a generalized Raviart-Thomas element space, a pressure-robu…
We present a hybrid mimetic finite-difference and virtual element formulation for coupled single-phase poromechanics on unstructured meshes. The key advantage of the scheme is that it is convergent on complex meshes containing highly distorted cells with arbitrary shapes. We use a local pressure-jump stabilization method based on unstructured macro-elements to prevent the development of spurious pressure modes in incompressible problems approaching undrained conditions. A scalable linear solution strategy is obtained using a block-triangular preconditioner designed specifically for the saddle-…
This work provides an efficient virtual element scheme for the modeling of nonlinear elastodynamics undergoing large deformations. The virtual element method (VEM) has been applied to various engineering problems such as elasto-plasticity, multiphysics, damage and fracture mechanics. This work focuses on the extension of VEM towards dynamic applications. Within this framework, we employ low-order ansatz functions in one, two and three dimensions that having arbitrary convex or concave polygonal elements. The formulations considered in this contribution are based on minimization of potential fu…
In the present paper we initiate the challenging task of building a mathematically sound theory for Adaptive Virtual Element Methods (AVEMs). Among the realm of polygonal meshes, we restrict our analysis to triangular meshes with hanging nodes in 2d -- the simplest meshes with a systematic refinement procedure that preserves shape regularity and optimal complexity. A major challenge in the a posteriori error analysis of AVEMs is the presence of the stabilization term, which is of the same order as the residual-type error estimator but prevents the equivalence of the latter with the energy erro…

This work considers the application of the virtual element method to plane hyperelasticity problems with a novel approach to the selection of stabilization parameters. The method is applied to a range of numerical examples and well known strain energy functions, including neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden material models. For each of the strain energy functions the performance of the method under varying degrees of compressibility, including near-incompressibility, is investigated. Through these examples the convergence behaviour of the virtual element method is demonstrated. Furthermore, t…

We analyse the p- and hp-versions of the virtual element method (VEM) for the the Stokes problem on a polygonal domain. The key tool in the analysis is the existence of a bijection between Poisson-like and Stokes-like VE spaces for the velocities. This allows us to re-interpret the standard VEM for Stokes as a VEM, where the test and trial discrete velocities are sought in Poisson-like VE spaces. The upside of this fact is that we inherit from [7] an explicit analysis of best interpolation results in VE spaces, as well as stabilization estimates that are explicit in terms of the degree of accu…
The Virtual Element Method is well suited to the formulation of arbitrarily regular Galerkin approximations of elliptic partial differential equations of order $2p_1$, for any integer $p_1\geq 1$. In fact, the virtual element paradigm provides a very effective design framework for conforming, finite dimensional subspaces of $H^{p_2}(Ω)$, $Ω$ being the computational domain and $p_2\geq p_1$ another suitable integer number. In this study, we first present an abstract setting for such highly regular approximations and discuss the mathematical details of how we can build conforming approximation s…
We present an hp-adaptive virtual element method (VEM) based on the hypercircle method of Prager and Synge for the approximation of solutions to diffusion problems. We introduce a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator, which is computed by solving an auxiliary global mixed problem. We show that the mixed VEM satisfies a discrete inf-sup condition, with inf-sup constant independent of the discretization parameters. Furthermore, we construct a stabilization for the mixed VEM, with explicit bounds in terms of the local degree of accuracy of the method. The theoretical results are su…

We design an adaptive virtual element method (AVEM) of lowest order over triangular meshes with hanging nodes in 2d, which are treated as polygons. AVEM hinges on the stabilization-free a posteriori error estimators recently derived in [8]. The crucial property, that also plays a central role in this paper, is that the stabilization term can be made arbitrarily small relative to the a posteriori error estimators upon increasing the stabilization parameter. Our AVEM concatenates two modules, GALERKIN and DATA. The former deals with piecewise constant data and is shown in [8] to be a contraction…
