In this letter we compare the behaviour of standard Virtual Element Methods (VEM) and stabilization free Enlarged Enhancement Virtual Element Methods (E$^2$VEM) with the focus on some elliptic test problems whose solution and diffusivity tensor are characterized by anisotropies. Results show that the possibility to avoid an arbitrary stabilizing part, offered by E$^2$VEM methods, can reduce the magnitude of the error on general polygonal meshes and help convergence.
In this paper, we introduce a new Virtual Element Method (VEM) not requiring any stabilization term based on the usual enhanced first-order VEM space. The new method relies on a modified formulation of the discrete diffusion operator that ensures stability preserving all the properties of the differential operator.
We present the construction and application of a first order stabilization-free virtual element method to problems in plane elasticity. Well-posedness and error estimates of the discrete problem are established. The method is assessed on a series of well-known benchmark problems from linear elasticity and numerical results are presented that affirm the optimal convergence rate of the virtual element method in the $L^2$ norm and the energy seminorm.

We present a higher order stabilization-free virtual element method applied to plane elasticity problems. We utilize a serendipity approach to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom from the corresponding high-order approximations. The well-posedness of the problem is numerically studied via an eigenanalysis. The method is then applied to several benchmark problems from linear elasticity and we show that the method delivers optimal convergence rates in $L^2$ norm and energy seminorm that match theoretical estimates as well as the convergence rates from higher order virtual element metho…
We address the issue of designing robust stabilization terms for the nonconforming virtual element method. To this end, we transfer the problem of defining the stabilizing bilinear form from the elemental nonconforming virtual element space, whose functions are not known in closed form, to the dual space spanned by the known functionals providing the degrees of freedom. By this approach, we manage to construct different bilinear forms yielding optimal or quasi-optimal stability bounds and error estimates, under weaker assumptions on the tessellation than the ones usually considered in this fra…

In this work we analyze a virtual element method on polyhedral meshes for solving the sixth-order elliptic problem with simply supported boundary conditions. We apply the Ciarlet-Raviart arguments to introduce an auxiliary unknown $σ:=-Δ^2 u$ and to search the main uknown $u$ in the $H^2\cap H_0^1$ Sobolev space. The virtual element discretization is well possed on a $C^1\times C^0$ virtual element spaces. We also provide the convergence and error estimates results. Finally, we report a series of numerical tests to verify the performance of numerical scheme.
The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m>n$ and $k\geq m$ are constructed in a universal way. A generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product with $m>n$ is derived, which is essential to devise the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements. By means of the local $H^m$ projection and a stabilization term using only the boundary degrees of freedom, the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are proposed to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. The norm equivalence of the stabilization on the kerne…
The Virtual Element Method (VEM) is a very effective framework to design numerical approximations with high global regularity to the solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. In this paper, we review the construction of such approximations for an elliptic problem of order $p_1$ using conforming, finite dimensional subspaces of $ H^{p_2}(Ω)$, where $p_1$ and $p_2$ are two integer numbers such that $p_2 \geq p_1 \geq 1$ and $Ω\in R^2$ is the computational domain. An abstract convergence result is presented in a suitably defined energy norm. The space formulation and major aspects suc…
We develop a geometrically intrinsic formulation of the arbitrary-order Virtual Element Method (VEM) on polygonal cells for the numerical solution of elliptic surface partial differential equations (PDEs). The PDE is first written in covariant form using an appropriate local reference system. The knowledge of the local parametrization allows us to consider the two-dimensional VEM scheme, without any explicit approximation of the surface geometry. The theoretical properties of the classical VEM are extended to our framework by taking into consideration the highly anisotropic character of the fi…
We present a survey of the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method for the Laplace and Helmholtz equations. For the latter, we present a new abstract analysis, based on weaker assumptions on the stabilization, and numerical results on the dispersion analysis, including comparison with the plane wave discontinuous Galerkin method.
We develop a class of mixed virtual volume methods for elliptic problems on polygonal/polyhedral grids. Unlike the mixed virtual element methods introduced in \cite{brezzi2014basic,da2016mixed}, our methods are reduced to symmetric, positive definite problems for the primary variable without using Lagrangian multipliers. We start from the usual way of changing the given equation into a mixed system using the Darcy's law, $\bu=-{\cal K} \nabla p$. By integrating the system of equations with some judiciously chosen test spaces on each element, we define new mixed virtual volume methods of all or…
The Virtual Element Method is well suited to the formulation of arbitrarily regular Galerkin approximations of elliptic partial differential equations of order $2p_1$, for any integer $p_1\geq 1$. In fact, the virtual element paradigm provides a very effective design framework for conforming, finite dimensional subspaces of $H^{p_2}(Ω)$, $Ω$ being the computational domain and $p_2\geq p_1$ another suitable integer number. In this study, we first present an abstract setting for such highly regular approximations and discuss the mathematical details of how we can build conforming approximation s…
This article presents an immersed virtual element method for solving a class of interface problems that combines the advantages of both body-fitted mesh methods and unfitted mesh methods. A background body-fitted mesh is generated initially. On those interface elements, virtual element spaces are constructed as solution spaces to local interface problems, and exact sequences can be established for these new spaces involving discontinuous coefficients. The discontinuous coefficients of interface problems are recast as Hodge star operators that are the key to project immersed virtual functions t…
In this study, we propose a virtual element scheme to solve the Darcy problem in three physical dimensions. The main novelty, here proposed, is that curved elements are naturally handled without any degradation of the solution accuracy. In fact, in presence of curved boundaries, or internal interfaces, the geometrical error introduced by planar approximations may dominate the convergence rate limiting the benefit of high-order approximations. We consider the Darcy problem in its mixed form to directly obtain, with our numerical scheme, accurate and mass conservative fluxes without any post-pro…
