We introduce and analyse the first order Enlarged Enhancement Virtual Element Method (E$^2$VEM) for the Poisson problem. The method allows the definition of bilinear forms that do not require a stabilization term, thanks to the exploitation of higher order polynomial projections that are made computable by suitably enlarging the enhancement (from which comes the prefix of the name E$^2$) property of local virtual spaces. The polynomial degree of local projections is chosen based on the number of vertices of each polygon. We provide a proof of well-posedness and optimal order a priori error estimates. Numerical tests on convex and non-convex polygonal meshes confirm the criterium for well-posedness and the theoretical convergence rates.
We present a stabilized POD-Galerkin reduced order method (ROM) for a Leray model. For the implementation of the model, we combine a two-step algorithm called Evolve-Filter (EF) with a computationally efficient finite volume method. In both steps of the EF algorithm, velocity and pressure fields are approximated using different POD basis and coefficients. To achieve pressure stabilization, we consider and compare two strategies: the pressure Poisson equation and the supremizer enrichment of the velocity space. We show that the evolve and filtered velocity spaces have to be enriched with the su…
We introduce a new stabilization for discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Poisson problem on polygonal meshes, which induces optimal convergence rates in the polynomial approximation degree $p$. In the setting of [S. Bertoluzza and D. Prada, A polygonal discontinuous Galerkin method with minus one stabilization, ESAIM Math. Mod. Numer. Anal. (DOI: 10.1051/m2an/2020059)], the stabilization is obtained by penalizing, in each mesh element $K$, a residual in the norm of the dual of $H^1(K)$. This negative norm is algebraically realized via the introduction of new auxiliary spaces. We carry out a…
We propose a Discontinuous Galerkin method for the Poisson equation on polygonal tessellations in two dimensions, stabilized by penalizing, locally in each element $K$, a residual term involving the fluxes, measured in the norm of the dual of $H^1(K)$. The scalar product corresponding to such a norm is numerically realized via the introduction of a (minimal) auxiliary space inspired by the Virtual Element Method. Stability and optimal error estimates in the broken $H^1$ norm are proven under a weak shape regularity assumption allowing the presence of very small edges. The results of numerical …

In the present paper we initiate the challenging task of building a mathematically sound theory for Adaptive Virtual Element Methods (AVEMs). Among the realm of polygonal meshes, we restrict our analysis to triangular meshes with hanging nodes in 2d -- the simplest meshes with a systematic refinement procedure that preserves shape regularity and optimal complexity. A major challenge in the a posteriori error analysis of AVEMs is the presence of the stabilization term, which is of the same order as the residual-type error estimator but prevents the equivalence of the latter with the energy erro…
The nonconforming virtual element method (NCVEM) for the approximation of the weak solution to a general linear second-order non-selfadjoint indefinite elliptic PDE in a polygonal domain is analyzed under reduced elliptic regularity. The main tool in the a priori error analysis is the connection between the nonconforming virtual element space and the Sobolev space $H^1_0(Ω)$ by a right-inverse $J$ of the interpolation operator $I_h$. The stability of the discrete solution allows for the proof of existence of a unique discrete solution, of a discrete inf-sup estimate and, consequently, for opti…
We present a novel class of high-order space-time finite element schemes for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations. We prove that our schemes are mass conservative, positivity preserving, and unconditionally energy stable for any order of approximation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first class of (arbitrarily) high-order accurate schemes for the PNP equations that simultaneously achieve all these three properties. This is accomplished via (1) using finite elements to directly approximate the so-called entropy variable instead of the density variable, and (2) using a discontinu…
In this paper we consider a class of unfitted finite element methods for scalar elliptic problems. These so-called CutFEM methods use standard finite element spaces on a fixed unfitted triangulation combined with the Nitsche technique and a ghost penalty stabilization. As a model problem we consider the application of such a method to the Poisson interface problem. We introduce and analyze a new class of preconditioners that is based on a subspace decomposition approach. The unfitted finite element space is split into two subspaces, where one subspace is the standard finite element space assoc…
We analyse the p- and hp-versions of the virtual element method (VEM) for the the Stokes problem on a polygonal domain. The key tool in the analysis is the existence of a bijection between Poisson-like and Stokes-like VE spaces for the velocities. This allows us to re-interpret the standard VEM for Stokes as a VEM, where the test and trial discrete velocities are sought in Poisson-like VE spaces. The upside of this fact is that we inherit from [7] an explicit analysis of best interpolation results in VE spaces, as well as stabilization estimates that are explicit in terms of the degree of accu…
In this work, we introduce an inverse averaging finite element method (IAFEM) for solving the size-modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck (SMPNP) equations. Comparing with the classical Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations, the SMPNP equations add a nonlinear term to each of the Nernst-Planck (NP) fluxes to describe the steric repulsion which can treat multiple nonuniform particle sizes in simulations. Since the new terms include sums and gradients of ion concentrations, the nonlinear coupling of SMPNP equations is much stronger than that of PNP equations. By introducing a generalized Slotboom transf…

In this paper we analyze a virtual element method for the two dimensional elasticity spectral problem allowing small edges. Under this approach, and with the aid of the theory of compact operators, we prove convergence of the proposed VEM and error estimates, where the influence of the Lamé constants is presented. We present a series of numerical tests to assess the performance of the method where we analyze the effects of the Poisson ratio on the computation of the order of convergence, together with the effects of the stabilization term on the arising of spurious eigenvalues.
