In this paper, we analyze a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin(HDG) method with reduced stabilization for the Stokes equations. The reduced stabilization enables us to reduce the number of facet unknowns and improve the computational efficiency of the method. We provide optimal error estimates in an energy and $L^2$ norms. It is shown that the reduced method with the lowest-order approximation is closely related to the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart finite element method. We also prove that the solution of the reduced method converges to the nonconforming Gauss-Legendre finite element solution as a stabilization parameter $τ$ tends to infinity and that the convergence rate is $O(τ^{-1})$.
We propose a multigrid method to solve the linear system of equations arising from a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin (in particular, a single face hybridizable, a hybrid Raviart--Thomas, or a hybrid Brezzi--Douglas--Marini) discretization of a Stokes problem. Our analysis is centered around the augmented Lagrangian approach and we prove uniform convergence in this setting. Numerical experiments underline our analytical findings.
This paper proposes an interface/boundary-unfitted eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method for Darcy-Stokes-Brinkman interface problems in two and three dimensions. The method uses piecewise linear polynomials for the velocity approximation and piecewise constants for both the velocity gradient and pressure approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains separated by the interface, uses piecewise constants for the numerical traces of velocity on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains, and uses piecewise constants or linear polynomials for the nu…
This paper analyzes a class of globally divergence-free (and therefore pressure-robust) hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite element methods for stationary Navier-Stokes equations. The methods use the $\mathcal{P}_{k}/\mathcal{P}_{k-1}$ $(k\geq1)$ discontinuous finite element combination for the velocity and pressure approximations in the interior of elements, and piecewise $\mathcal{P}_k/\mathcal{P}_{k}$ for the trace approximations of the velocity and pressure on the inter-element boundaries. It is shown that the uniqueness condition for the discrete solution is guaranteed by tha…
We present the lowest-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin schemes with numerical integration (quadrature), denoted as HDG-P0, for the reaction-diffusion equation and the generalized Stokes equations on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. Here by lowest order, we mean that the (hybrid) finite element space for the global HDG facet degrees of freedom (DOFs) is the space of piecewise constants on the mesh skeleton. A discontinuous piecewise linear space is used for the approximation of the local primal unknowns. We give the optimal a priori error analysis of the propo…
We propose a uniform block-diagonal preconditioner for condensed $H$(div)-conforming HDG schemes for parameter-dependent saddle point problems, including the generalized Stokes equations and the linear elasticity equations. An optimal preconditioner is obtained for the stiffness matrix on the global velocity/displacement space via the auxiliary space preconditioning (ASP) technique \cite{Xu96}. A spectrally equivalent approximation to the Schur complement on the element-wise constant pressure space is also constructed, and an explicit computable exact inverse is obtained via the Woodbury matri…
In [ESAIM: M2AN, 54(2020), 2229-2264], we proposed an HDG method to approximate the solution of a tangential boundary control problem for the Stokes equations and obtained an optimal convergence rate for the optimal control {that reflects its global regularity}. However, the error estimates depend on the pressure, and the velocity is not divergence free. The importance of pressure-robust numerical methods for fluids was addressed by John et al. [SIAM Review, 59(2017), 492-544]. In this work, we devise a new HDG method to approximate the solution of the Stokes tangential boundary control proble…
In this study, we present an $hp$-multigrid preconditioner for a divergence-conforming HDG scheme for the generalized Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. Our method relies on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. The $hp$-multigrid algorithm is a multiplicative auxiliary space preconditioner that employs the lowest-order space as the auxiliary space, and we developed a geometric multigrid method as the auxiliary space solver. For the generalized Stokes problem, the crucial ingredient of the geometric multigrid method is the equ…
This work proposes a superconvergent hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for the approximation of the Cauchy formulation of the Stokes equation using same degree of polynomials for the primal and mixed variables. The novel formulation relies on the well-known Voigt notation to strongly enforce the symmetry of the stress tensor. The proposed strategy introduces several advantages with respect to the existing HDG formulations. First, it remedies the suboptimal behavior experienced by the classical HDG method for formulations involving the symmetric part of the gradient of the primal…
In this paper we present new stability and optimal error analyses of hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods which do not require elliptic regularity assumptions. To obtain error estimates without elliptic regularity assumptions, we use new inf-sup conditions based on stabilized saddle point structures of HDG methods. We show that this approach can be applied to obtain optimal error estimates of HDG methods for the Poisson equations, the convection-reaction-diffusion equations, the Stokes equations, and the Oseen equations.
A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation of the linearized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, known as Oseen equations, is presented. The Cauchy stress formulation is considered and the symmetry of the stress tensor and the mixed variable, namely the scaled strain-rate tensor, is enforced pointwise via Voigt notation. Using equal-order polynomial approximations of degree k for all variables, HDG provides a stable discretization. Moreover, owing to Voigt notation, optimal convergence of order k+1 is obtained for velocity, pressure and strain-rate tensor and a local postproce…
We present a novel (high-order) hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) scheme for the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem. The (moving domain) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are discretized using a divergence-free HDG scheme within the arbitrary Lagrangian-Euler (ALE) framework. The nonlinear elasticity equations are discretized using a novel HDG scheme with an H(curl)-conforming velocity/displacement approximation. We further use a combination of the Nitsche's method (for the tangential component) and the mortar method (for the normal component) to enforce the interface condi…

In this paper, we propose two arbitrary order eXtended hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) methods for second order elliptic interface problems in two and three dimensions. The first X-HDG method applies to any piecewise $C^2$ smooth interface. It uses piecewise polynomials of degrees $k$ $(k>= 1)$ and $k-1$ respectively for the potential and flux approximations in the interior of elements inside the subdomains, and piecewise polynomials of degree $ k$ for the numerical traces of potential on the inter-element boundaries inside the subdomains. Double value numerical traces on the parts…
We present a reduced order method (ROM) based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) for the viscous Burgers' equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized using an implicit-explicit hybrid discontinuous Galerkin/discoutinuous Galerkin (IMEX HDG/DG) scheme. A novel closure model, which can be easily computed offline, is introduced. Numerical results are presented to test the proposed POD model and the closure model.
We present a parallel computing strategy for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) nested geometric multigrid (GMG) solver. Parallel GMG solvers require a combination of coarse-grain and fine-grain parallelism to improve time to solution performance. In this work we focus on fine-grain parallelism. We use Intel's second generation Xeon Phi (Knights Landing) many-core processor. The GMG method achieves ideal convergence rates of $0.2$ or less, for high polynomial orders. A matrix free (assembly free) technique is exploited to save considerable memory usage and increase arithmetic intensit…

This paper addresses several aspects of the linear Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method (HDG) for the Helmholtz equation with impedance boundary condition at high frequency. First, error estimates with explicit dependence on the wave number $k$ for the HDG approximations to the exact solution $u$ and its negative gradient $\mathbf{q}=-\nabla u$ are derived. It is shown that $k\Vert u - u_h \Vert_{L^2(Ω)} + \Vert \mathbf{q} -\mathbf{q}_h \Vert_{L^2(Ω)} = O(k^2h^2+k^4h^3)$ under the conditions that $k^3h^2$ is sufficiently small and that the penalty parameter $τ\eqsim k$, where $h$ is the …
The need for accelerating the repeated solving of certain parametrized systems motivates the development of more efficient reduced order methods. The classical reduced basis method is popular due to an offline-online decomposition and a mathematically rigorous {\em a posterior} error estimator which guides a greedy algorithm offline. For nonlinear and nonaffine problems, hyper reduction techniques have been introduced to make this decomposition efficient. However, they may be tricky to implement and often degrade the online computation efficiency. To avoid this degradation, reduced residual re…
In this paper we propose a new reduced order model (ROM) to the imcompressible Stokes equations. Numerical experiments show that our ROM is accurate and efficient. Under some assumptions on the problem data, we prove that the convergence rates of the new ROM is the same with standard solvers.

We develop a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)-Galerkin based Reduced Order Model (ROM) for the efficient numerical simulation of the parametric Navier-Stokes equations in the stream function-vorticity formulation. Unlike previous works, we choose different reduced coefficients for the vorticity and stream function fields. In addition, for parametric studies we use a global POD basis space obtained from a database of time dependent full order snapshots related to sample points in the parameter space. We test the performance of our ROM strategy with the vortex merger benchmark. Accuracy and…
In this article, we develop a reduced basis method for efficiently solving the coupled Stokes/Darcy equations with parametric internal geometry. To accommodate possible changes in topology, we define the Stokes and Darcy domains implicitly via a phase-field indicator function. In our reduced order model, we approximate the parameter-dependent phase-field function with a discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) that enables affine decomposition of the associated linear and bilinear forms. In addition, we introduce a modification of DEIM that leads to non-negativity preserving approximatio…
We investigate a projection-based reduced-order model of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for moderate Reynolds numbers. In particular, we construct an "embedded" reduced basis space, by applying proper orthogonal decomposition to the Shifted Boundary Method, a high-fidelity embedded method recently developed. We focus on the geometrical parametrization through level-set geometries, using a fixed Cartesian background geometry and the associated mesh. This approach avoids both remeshing and the development of a reference domain formulation, as typically done in fitted mesh fini…
We propose, analyze, and investigate numerically a novel two-level Galerkin reduced order model (2L-ROM) for the efficient and accurate numerical simulation of the steady Navier-Stokes equations. In the first step of the 2L-ROM, a relatively low-dimensional nonlinear system is solved. In the second step, the Navier-Stokes equations are linearized around the solution found in the first step, and a higher-dimensional system for the linearized problem is solved. We prove an error bound for the new 2L-ROM and compare it to the standard one level ROM (1L-ROM) in the numerical simulation of the stea…

The Stokes-Brinkman equations model fluid flow in highly heterogeneous porous media. In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of the Stokes-Brinkman equations with stochastic permeabilities, where the permeabilities in subdomains are assumed to be independent and uniformly distributed within a known interval. We employ a truncated anchored ANOVA decomposition alongside stochastic collocation to estimate the moments of the velocity and pressure solutions. Through an adaptive procedure selecting only the most important ANOVA directions, we reduce the number of collocation points needed …
We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in a channel with a narrowing and walls of varying curvature. By applying the empirical interpolation method to generate an affine parameter dependency, the offline-online procedure can be used to compute reduced order solutions for parameter variations. The reduced order space is computed from the steady-state snapshot solutions by a standard POD procedure. The model is discretised with high-order spectral element ansatz functions, resulting in 4752 degrees of freedom. The proposed reduced order model produces accurate approximations of steady-state sol…
We present VPVnet, a deep neural network method for the Stokes' equations under reduced regularity. Different with recently proposed deep learning methods [40,51] which are based on the original form of PDEs, VPVnet uses the least square functional of the first-order velocity-pressure-vorticity (VPV) formulation ([30]) as loss functions. As such, only first-order derivative is required in the loss functions, hence the method is applicable to a much larger class of problems, e.g. problems with non-smooth solutions. Despite that several methods have been proposed recently to reduce the regularit…
This work proposes a novel finite volume paradigm, the face-centred finite volume (FCFV) method. Contrary to the popular vertex (VCFV) and cell (CCFV) centred finite volume methods, the novel FCFV defines the solution on the mesh faces (edges in 2D) to construct locally-conservative numerical schemes. The idea of the FCFV method stems from a hybridisable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) formulation with constant degree of approximation, thus inheriting the convergence properties of the classical HDG. The resulting FCFV features a global problem in terms of a piecewise constant function defined on …
The present work focuses on the geometric parametrization and the reduced order modeling of the Stokes equation. We discuss the concept of a parametrized geometry and its application within a reduced order modeling technique. The full order model is based on the discontinuous Galerkin method with an interior penalty formulation. We introduce the broken Sobolev spaces as well as the weak formulation required for an affine parameter dependency. The operators are transformed from a fixed domain to a parameter dependent domain using the affine parameter dependency. The proper orthogonal decomposit…
